Chapter 7: Nightmare
Nessie's POV
I was riding one of my horses out in the field when I got the sense that something was very wrong. An eerie feeling settled over me. My gut instinct told me to run home. I rushed into the barn and quickly locked up my horse in his stall.
My heart was pounding out of my chest as I sprinted toward the house. I skidded to a halt right outside of my room. I screamed when I looked inside and saw blood gushing out of Tyler fast. I ran over to the crib and picked up the lifeless body of my baby boy. I pulled a knife out of his body. I screamed as it occurred to me that my son was dead. He'd been brutally murdered.
Then I saw a note in the crib. I dropped the bloodied knife which hit the floor with a loud clatter. I picked up the note which read "You're next my darling niece," then I heard a noise behind me. I looked back and saw my aunt and uncle smiling at me as they approached me with butcher knifes in their hands.
I sat upright in my bed. My heart speeding faster than a bullet train. Unable to get my breathing under control. I looked at the crib beside me and was relieved to see Tyler right there fast asleep. Alive and well. It was just a nightmare. That was it. It was just a nightmare. Tyler was safe. I was safe. But were we? What if my aunt and uncle somehow found us? I knew my aunt and uncle well. When they wanted something there was nothing that could stop them. Nothing that could get in their way.
I was scared that at any moment I would be discovered. Tyler woke up just then and started crying. I was relieved by the sound of his crying. It meant that at least for now he was okay. He was safe. I picked him up and just held him for a minute. I just wanted to hold him forever and keep him safe from all harm.
After a few moments of him crying and me holding him I placed him on the bed. I undid his diaper and cleaned him as best and quickly as I could. I learned right away that if I didn't want to get peed on I'd better cover him up and do everything fast. My first attempt at a diaper change had been a disaster. My grandparents laughed for a good five minutes afterwards. I remember being very annoyed by them but now I would do anything to hear their laughter once again.
"All done Tyler," I said as I tossed the dirty diaper in the diaper pail the Cullens had been kind enough to buy for me. Now it was feeding time. I walked down to the kitchen where Esme was already cooking breakfast for me and maybe Jacob. I never saw the Cullens eating for some reason.
"Oh good morning Nessie. You're just in time breakfast is almost ready,"
"Thanks Esme. But I actually need to make Tyler's breakfast first,"
"Actually I already did that for you. The water is simmering on the stove here,"
"Wow. Thanks. That's really kind of you," I said as I poured some of the warm water into a bottle and mixed in the formula. I poured some on my skin to make sure it wasn't too hot before I gave it to my son.
"Esme can I ask you something personal?"
"Sure sweetie what is it?"
"Well it's just that you seem to really love kids. I was just wondering why you and Carlisle didn't have any of your own?" I instantly felt bad for asking. I could see that I touched a sensitive nerve. "I'm sorry. That was incredibly insensitive of me to ask. You don't have to answer that if you don't want to,"
"No its okay Nessie. I don't mind. I just can't have children of my own,"
"I'm sorry," I could not even begin to imagine that kind of pain. I'd known since I was a little girl that I wanted to be a mother one day. When Tyler was born that was the happiest day of my life. I couldn't imagine not being able to have a child.
"Anyway breakfast is ready. Here you go," she placed a plate full of eggs, sausage, and pancakes in front of me.
"Is that pancakes I smell?" Jacob asked right as he entered the kitchen.
"Yes and I already have a plate for you as well,"
"Good morning Nessie," he said excitedly.
"Good morning Jacob," I smiled. Our first date last night had been perfect. He took me out to a nice Italian restaurant and then we went to the movies afterward. Then after the movie we'd gone for ice cream. It was perfect.
"So Nessie what do you want to do today?"
"Nothing much really. Well there is the really big race later that I want to see,"
"Is it a horse race?" I'd told Jacob how much I loved horses and racing. Of course I'd just led him to believe that I was a big fan of the sport. Not that I actually owned any horses.
"Yes its the Breeders Cup Classic. Actually there's a lot of other races that come on before that. It's the richest day in horse racing they say,"
"I didn't know that you liked horses Nessie," Esme remarked.
"Oh I love them. I kind of grew up in a family of people who loved horses and horse racing so it really rubbed off on me," I laughed.
I felt a lot calmer now. The nightmare had been pushed to the back of my mind. It wasn't completely forgotten but it wasn't the forefront of my attention anymore. I finished my breakfast and before Esme could say anything I washed my dishes.
When the time came I turned on the TV in the living room and ran through the channels until I found the right one. I started feeling extremely emotional as they loaded the horses into the starting gate. Every year I went to see these races live with my grandparents. There was nothing better than actually being there and watching our horses run their hearts out. Even when our horses lost it was still an amazing feeling just to be there with the ones you love.
I was surprised when the rest of the family joined me. I think they were even more surprised to learn that I loved horse racing. Just like Esme and Jacob had been. It was a lot of fun though. Especially once I taught them about online betting. For some reason they kept asking Alice which horse to bet on. What was even more strange was that she was always right.
It was all going well until the final race. The Breeder's Cup Classic. One of my horses, a red horse with a white blaze down his face by the name of Brooding Vampire, was set to run in this race. He was a strong horse and a fast runner. He won the race and was taken to the winner's circle.
The blood left my face when I saw my aunt and uncle there smiling as they accepted the trophy. Then the reporter asked them a question "I know that this is a tough time for you having recently lost your parents and now with your niece having gone missing. Has this affected your enjoyment of Brooding Vampire's win today?"
"Well I've been thinking of them a lot today. It was hard attending this event today but I knew that my parents would have wanted us to still come and enjoy life. I'm also fully confident that my niece will be found alive and well. Every law enforcement agency throughout the country has been alerted and are looking for her. I'm sure we will find her soon,"
I was sure I was more pale than a Cullen at that point. My mind flashed back to the night I'd overheard my aunt and uncle talking.
"I can't believe they did not leave a single penny to me," she seethed. Was she talking about my grandparents will? I hadn't even thought about the possibility that my grandparents may have left a will behind.
"I don't understand it either," my uncle agreed. "They should have left everything to you. You are their daughter. Their blood relative after all,"
"It wasn't enough that we had to kill them. No. They just had to go and leave everything to her. All of their assets! The horses, the horse breeding operation, their stocks, their bonds, all their property, the one billion dollars they had in the bank. Why the hell should she get anything at all? She's just some random baby my sister discovered in a dumpster outside of Seattle. She is not a member of this family,"
My blood ran cold. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. They killed my grandparents. They were the reason I no longer had grandparents. My grandparents had died in a car accident after the brakes failed. But now it was clear to me that the brakes didn't just fail. They were tampered with.
"You know what this means don't you?" my uncle said.
"That I'm going to have to kill my darling niece next? Yes I already know that," she said. My heart was pounding in my ears. The world began to spin around me.
"Not just that. Remember what the lawyer said? The will clearly stipulates that only Renesmee and her descendants can inherit their fortune. If we kill Renesmee then-"
"That stupid bastard child of hers will inherit my parents fortune!? First they leave it to a girl who isn't even their biological granddaughter and now that little spawn of hers is in line to inherit before I do!"
"Shh be quiet before she hears us,"
"It's sickening," she said. "Tomorrow we get rid of the girl and that baby,"
"Agreed,"
I was on the verge of having a full blown panic attack. I felt like I was going to be sick. They couldn't find me. They could'n't find us. They were going to kill us if they found us.. Edward looked scared. Jasper gave me an odd look. Then out of nowhere a wave of calm came over me like a tsunami. I felt more relaxed than I had been in a long time.
