Chapter 18: Prison
Nessie's POV
Mom I'm in jail because I just committed a double homicide.
I closed eyes and could hear nothing but pure silence on the other end of the line. Even with a mind that could work ten times faster than my own I was sure it was difficult for the words to sink into my mom's brain.
"Nessie. Baby. I don't understand," she said after a long silence. Suddenly I felt like I was going to vomit.
"Nessie what happened?" mom asked me.
I took a deep breath to calm my nerves and hopefully ease the nausea. "Mom I killed my aunt and uncle," it was the first time that I'd spoken the words out loud. "I went to look for them and confront them. My plan was to get them to confess what they'd done. My plan was to secretly record them confessing to my grandparents murders and their intentions to kill Tyler and I. I was going to bring the recording to the police. But things went really bad. They pulled out a gun on me and they were going to shot. but I disarmed them and shot them instead. Now I'm in jail and I don't-"
"Renesmee try to calm down okay? We're going to get you out of there. Just stay calm baby,"
"But mom I killed people. I might get a life sentence or worse the death penalty! I might-"
"Renesmee Carlie Cullen you need to calm down right now!" my mom shouted. "Panicking isn't going to help the situation. Stay calm and I promise you that we will figure this out. Nothing is going to happen to you,"
"Okay mom. I trust you,"
"Try not to worry Nessie,"
"An impossible task for me right now. You should know that mom,"
"I know," she admitted. "But at least try,"
"Okay," I said and we hung up.
The guards escorted me back to my cell after the call was over. As much as I tried not to worry I couldn't help myself. What was going to happen to me? Would I ever see the light of day again? What about Tyler? I knew my son was safe with the Cullens. But what if I never saw my son again?
I shook my head. I had to try to stay positive. Panicking wasn't going to help my situation. My mom was right about that. When the lights were turned off I laid down and tried to go to sleep. But all I ended up doing was tossing and turning for hours on end.
I must've fallen asleep at some point though because the next thing I know I'm being awakened by a loud noise and daylight is streaming through the windows.
I lifted my head up and saw another girl around my age being forced into this hellhole with me. She looked like a nice enough girl. She was probably around the same age as I was. I wondered what she'd done to end up in this place.
Then a draft of air blew her scent in my direction and I automatically grew very tense. She wasn't human. But she wasn't a vampire, or a hybrid, or shifter like Jacob either. This girl was something else entirely. I didn't know if she was a friend or foe so instead of a warm greeting I just hissed "What are you?"
I didn't know if I'd offended the girl and I didn't really care. All I knew is that I wanted answers. I wanted answers now. She looked away from me. So I asked again "What are you?"
"Not now," she simply said. She pointed at the guard that wasn't too far away from where we were standing. "I'll tell you in five minutes,"
I was getting highly irritated with her. Why was she being so cryptic? I decided that it was better to keep my mouth shut until she decided to talk.
Five minutes passed and the guard had to leave. Which meant that we were finally alone.
"Okay what are you?"
"Don't worry Nessie. I'm not a threat. I swear. I know that's what you're thinking,"
"You just called me Nessie. Why?" I was starting to get seriously freaked out by this girl.
"Do you prefer being called Renesmee? I was under the impression that you preferred being called Nessie,"
This was getting extremely freaky. "I mean how is it that you know my name?"
"Oh. That. I've known your name ever since I saw you in a vision. When fate decided that we were destined to meet,"
"What are you talking about? Who are you? What are you?"
"I'm so sorry. Sometimes I get so lost in my visions of the future that I forget some things haven't happened yet. Like me introducing myself to you. My name is Sophia and I'm a witch,"
"You're a what?"
"I'm a witch,"
I didn't know why I was shocked. I shouldn't be shocked. After learning that shapeshifters, vampires, and hybrids were real was it really such a shock that other supernatural creatures existed?
"You're a witch? Like potions and spells and that sort of stuff?"
"Yes although my potion making skills lack something to be desired. I'm not very good at that. My grandmother has been teaching me but I'm still bad at it,"
"But how'd you know who I was?"
"Some witches have other special talents. My visions are very random but they're also precise,"
"I know someone who could see the future," I said as I thought of my aunt Alice. I missed her. I hoped she and my father were okay.
"That's not surprising. I'm not the only seer out there after all. We're rare but we're out there,"
"Sophia why are you here?" I asked her.
"Because our fates became entertwined with one another. Somewhere along the line we became destined to meet one another. I'm supposed to help you and I'll gain something in return. Something valuable. I know you don't see it now but this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship,"
"You're talking in riddles now,"
She laughed. "I suppose I am,"
"So can you tell me about my future?" I asked curiously.
"Are you sure that you want to know? I find that often times people want to know their future until they actually learn what it is,"
I was scared but curious.
"Will I get out of having a prison sentence?"
"Prison is the least of your worries right now," she muttered.
"What do you mean?"
"In the very near future vampires that currently reside in Italy will attempt to destroy your family. Fate hasn't decided whether or not they will succeed. But hear this. One out of the two men currently fighting for your affections is going to die while saving your life,"
