Unexpected

Just one of my own again. I know lots of people have done stuff like this, but I haven't yet and thought I'd give it a go :).

Melissa/Jessica: pretty sure you're the same person.

Mary Margaret tapped her foot nervously against the stone step. She was having to fight the urge to run away and pretend this wasn't happening. But it was, and she had made the decision to keep her baby so she had to do this. David had a right to know. She hadn't even told her dad yet. She knew it would make her stepmother's day. Not because she was having a baby and babies brought joy, but because it gave her an excuse to finally have the seventeen year old chucked out of the family home. No, she wanted David to know first. He was the father, after all. Mary Margaret felt like he had the right to know. Oh, but what was he going to think of her? They'd hardly been an item for a month. They could barely call themselves a couple. It was more like a one-night stand. Except that it wasn't, because Mary Margaret just knew that she and David were meant to be. She hoped this pregnancy didn't throw a spanner in the works for them, but even if it did, she wasn't giving up her child. Never mind David, the rest of the town would find out soon enough. What were they all going to say? David had been courting Kathryn. Her dad was like royalty in the small town. He owned a large chunk of land, and gold had been found in the bit of the river he owned. David had ended things with Kathryn to be with her, but Mary Margaret wasn't sure most of the town even knew they had split yet. She was going to be called all kind of names. But she couldn't think about any of that now, someone was opening the door.

Mary Margaret suddenly felt her mouth go dust dry. She knew David was the only one home right now. His twin James would be at football practice, and his dad would be at work. She didn't relax even when she saw that it was him (although he and James were identical to most, Mary Margaret could easily tell them apart).

"Mary Margaret." David greeted her warmly. "I would have tidied up if I knew you were coming. Come on in…"

"Wait." Mary Margaret said nervously. She was better saying this here. That way, if it all went south, it would be less awkward for her to leave. David frowned.

"Something wrong?" He asked her. Mary Margaret bit her lip.

"Not wrong, not exactly." She said quietly. David stayed quiet, waiting for her to explain. Mary Margaret sighed and counted to three. It was now or never.

"I'm-pregnant-and-it's-yours." She said so quickly David could hardly make her out. His eyes widened in shock. But…they had used a condom. "I'm not expecting anything from you." She added. "We'll be fine. I just thought you had a right to know…"

"I'll quit school tomorrow." He told her. Mary Margaret looked back at him, hurt. Was this such bad news that he felt being in the same school as her would be too awkward? "You'll have the baby before graduation. You'll at least get that. Sheriff Graham said when I finished school he would be happy to have me join the force after I did some filing work for them last summer. I guess I'll be taking up his offer a little earlier than either of us expected. That way, we'll have a little nest egg before the baby's born. We can get some basics for them. Maybe even a flat together. Then, when you're ready, I can help get you through teacher training. I know how much you want to be a teacher…"

"Wait, slow down." Mary Margaret said, now completely confused. "You're not quitting school so you don't have to be around me? You still want to be with me? Even when I'm keeping the baby?" David looked back, almost a little hurt.

"Mary Margaret, I think we both knew from the moment you transferred to Storybrooke High from being home-schooled that was it. We were going to end up together." Tentatively, he reached out and placed a hand on her still flat stomach. He smiled warmly. "You carrying my child doesn't change the fact that I'm crazy about you. If anything, it makes me love you even more. Mare, we're having a baby!" He announced before unexpectedly picking her up, twirling her round, and kissing her. Mary Margaret smiled happily into the kiss. This wasn't going to be easy, they both knew that. They would still have to deal with ruthless parents. Mary Margaret's dad was easily manipulated by her stepmom and David's adopted father only took him because the orphanage wouldn't let him separate twins. He had always favoured James. The town, and their families, could think what they wanted though. They knew they loved each other. They knew they would love their baby. That was enough for them.
