This is a one-shot but the story is related to my other fic "Until everything's whole again". You don't have to read that one to understand this one because it's kind of a stand-alone chapter. So, just keep in mind that Harvey has had Mike since he was 12 when something happened to his grandma. In this fic, Mike is around 14 and their relationship is strong and close.

WARNING: This chapter contains a little bit of disciplinarian spanking and shot being administered to a boy, also lots of fluff. If you don't like it, you don't have to read it. This is pure fiction and has no relation to my opinion on disciplinary methods for un-fictional children. Also, I don't know how doctors work in the United States, so if something is not correct, just go with it, it's for the sake of our small, fictional world.

I don't own any of the characters from the show nor am I making any kind of profit out of this.

"That's it! This fever is not coming down. We're going to the hospital" -Harvey said, turning off the thermometer he just got out of Mike's mouth.

"Harvey, I really don't need to go" –Mike begged for the hundredth time that evening, tears almost falling out of his eyes.

"Michael, you need to. The medicine is not working and I'm getting worried. It's not up for discussion, now go get in the car" –Harvey ordered.

Mike had been sick for a few days, it had just started with a cough now and then, but then it became more permanent, then there were the cold and stomachaches and finally, the fever came, so Harvey decided to listen to Donna and take the kid to the doctor, only, it turned out to be a more difficult task than he had imagined. Ray had been waiting outside for almost 20 minutes and Harvey still couldn't get Mike downstairs and into the car.

"I already told you no, I'm fine. I've had this before and it will go away"

"One thing is to have a little bit of cough, it's a whole other story to have a fever. I'm trying to do this the nice way, but if you don't like it I can change that.- You have until the count of three to get your ass out that door and d into the car….1….2..." -he said using his most no-nonsense voice trying to intimidate the boy into complying.

When Harvey reached three and Mike still had that defiant look on his face and didn't move, he approached him, picking him up over his shoulder, and carried him all the way to the awaiting car, all the while Mike struggled to get out of the firm grip Harvey had on him. Harvey couln't understand how much fight the kid still had in him while running a fever of 39C. "If you don't stop kicking, I will…ow! Michael! Stop that" -He said landing a very hard swat to the thighs of the kid who had just landed a strong kick to his leg.

"Ow! What are you going?" -Yelled Mike, "Let me down!"

"Do that again Mike, and I will let you down just to get you right back up on my knee for a very well deserved spanking, you got it? I don't care if we are in the hallway or outside on the street. You are going to the doctor and that's final."

Mike didn't need to be told twice, he knew that Harvey meant what he said so he just allowed him to take him to the car. He wouldn't admit it out loud but going to the doctor and getting rid of the fever didn't actually sound that bad, he had been feeling very miserable and couln't wait to recover his energy and freedom to go outside again. But still, he was being taken without his consent so the whole ride to the hospital was spent in complete, sulking silence only to be broken when they arrived at the office and Mike noted other kids with their parents in the waiting room.

"You brought me to the children's wing?" -he said, very much offended of such treason. He was fourteen, clearly, he could go to the adult's doctor now.

"Well, the children wing is where the pediatricians are and since you ARE a child, this is where you're supposed to be".

"I'm not a child! I thought we were going to your doctor".

"Mike, don't make a big deal out of this. You like Doctor McHale and I can't take you to my doctor because they will send you straight back here"

No more words were exchanged and Harvey knew that it was not because Mike didn't have an argument because he always did but because he wasn't feeling well, even if he didn't' want to admit it. Ten minutes after, a nurse came and called them in. Harvey was expecting another fight from the kid and it didn't come, the kid just walked straight into the room and sat down in one of the chairs in front of the doctor's desk.

"Hello there Mike" -Greeted the doctor, entering the office just a minute after Harvey ha himself sat down next to Mike. "I've heard you're not feeling great as of lately?. Harvey, how are you doing?"

"Nice to see you again" -said Harvey, shaking the doctor's hand, giving Mike a look that warned him to better not be rude. A "hello" was all that came out of the kid's mouth.

Not taking it personally, the doctor started to write things down and asking Mike or Harvey, whoever decided to answer, some questions. –"Very well,, can you tell me what you feel?"

"He's got a fever" Harvey answered. "Last time I checked it was 39c, that was like 40 minutes ago. An hour before that it was 38.5. It has been between that at 37c since 3 am. Everything started with light symptoms a few days ago, just cough and stomachache until last night when the fever went up. I gave him some Tylenol like last time but it didn't do much. He's been low on energy and he complained about being sore in the morning and a headache".

"I see. Okay Mike, why don't you take your shirt and pants off and sit at the bed so I can check you over?" – The doctor said, standing up and preparing his equipment. Mike complied and undressed down to his underwear before sitting on the bed. The doctor checked his temperature, breathing, stomach, ears, throat, etc, before going back to his desk to write some stuff on his computer. "There's been a nasty bug going around in schools lately. He's not the first kid to come here with those symptoms. It tends to get pretty ugly if it's not treated at an early stage. You should have come sooner but I understand that usually, the first symptoms seem light and most parents don't bring their kids to the hospital for just some soreness. It is still very treatable before it actually turns ugly so I will prescribe him something and give him some shots now so he can start feeling better". He said, handing a note to a nurse who magically appeared next to him to receive it.

"Wait, what? – shouted Mike from the bed –"Some? As in, more than one? Can't you give me some pills or something? I promise I will take them" – Harvey saw that he was on the verge of tears and stood up to stand next to him, placing a calming hand on his back –"Harvey, please" – he begged.

"I'm not the doctor here buddy". He said as calmly as he could.

"It's not a bad as it sounds Mike. It'll be over before you know it" -said the doctor.

"But surely there must be other treatments. I'm good at taking medicine, I swear I will do it. Please, just give me some pills"

"No, you're not Mike" – Harvey interrupted, "Every time you have to take something, I end up having to remind you to do it. This is better, you get it over with once and for all"

"Well, I refuse. It's my body and I'm deciding I don't want anything or anyone poking it!"

"Well Mike, as I said before, this is a very nasty bug and we are just on time to make it go away before you get seriously ill and this is the only way. Pills or another kind of medicine won't do it because you would need to take very strong doses and your stomach wouldn't be able to handle it".

The nurse came back, carrying a small tray containing what Mike was sure, was the weapons of his death. He couldn't see what was on it because as soon as it was handed to the doctor, he turned his back on Mike to prepare the medicine on a small table. "Just lay on the bed on your tummy and relax. I'll make it very fast, I promise. The fear is stronger than the actual discomfort of the injection itself. I just gave this same treatment to a 10-year-old and he said that it wasn't half as bad as he thought".

Mike wasn't going to give up that easily. While the doctor was preparing he was giving Harvey the biggest puppy eyes he could manage, begging him to convince the doctor to change his mind. "I swear I will remember, please Harvey, tell him to give me something else. I'll even put on an alarm to remind me".

"Mike, if the doctor says this is what you need, then this is what you need. I'm not going to tell him how to do his job. You're making a bigger deal out of this than what it actually is" God! The doctor hasn't even started and the kid is already crying. "Come on Mike, lay down and I promise we'll get whatever you want for dinner," He said trying to gently push down the kid on the bed.

"No! Just, please" Mike begged

"Okay Mike are you ready?" the doctor asked approaching the bed "this won't take more then a minute"

"No, no, no, no" Havery had already gotten Mike but as soon as the kid saw the doctor reached him he started getting back up again to which Havery grabbed his hands to keep him down. "No, no, no, please, please" Tears finally came to his eyes once the realization hit that he could not get out of the situation. He knew he was acting childish but at the moment, there were more important things to worry about, like the doctor trying to pull down his pants with one hand while holding a tray with needles on the other hand. At this, in a rush of adrenaline, Mike was able to get up enough to get off the bed, thinking that maybe he could make a run for it.

"Okay Mike, that's it" said Harvey, grabbing his arm and pulling him back only this time, not to the bed but towards himself. Within seconds, Mike found himself over his guardian's lap, Havery throwing his leg over Mike's to stop him from kicking. Mike didn't miss the thought that that was always a very bad position for him to be in. It always ended somehow with him having a sore backside. "You want to do this the hard way? You got it bud. Now, stop kicking or I'll call a nurse to come and help".

"LET ME GO!" Mike shouted. "You can't do this. I'm old enough to decide and I don't want this"

"Yes I can. You have until the count of three to calm yourself down"

"Mike," The doctor intervened "I swear this is not half as bad as what you think. Just relax a little bit and it'll be over" He said with the calmest voice he could manage but the kid couldn't hear a word he said through his own crying and shouting. "one…two…" Harvey started to count, having absolutely no effect on the child. "Three" he finally said "you brought this on yourself, Mike," he said landing some swats to the butt on his lap.

"oooww! No, no Harvey, STOP!" he cried but it worked, stopping him from kicking just long enough for Harvey to pull down his underpants. Mike tried to cover himself allowing Harvey to pin his hands on his back. Harvey nodded to the doctor then, letting him know that he should work fast before the kid was able to get loose again. It didn't escape Harvey's head that he was growing, who knew for how long he could keep doing this? Hopefully, the kid would grow out of his fear and this situation wouldn't have to be repeated.

Doctor McHale got his cue and immediately grabbed the first syringe and some alcohol, trying to work as fast as possible. "Let's do this Mike, at the count of three…one, two, three" he counted fast, not allowing the kid to react before injecting him with the medicine.

"ow ow ow ow, get it out! Get it out! Get it ooout!" He full-on sobbed but as the doctor had said, it was over before he knew it.

"Good Mike, you did food buddy. One done, just two more to go" he said, grabbing the second syringe.

"Nooo! Please, dad! Please make it stop" – Harvey's heart stopped. Dad? Did the kid just call him dad? It was the first time Mike had referred to him like that. Harvey knew that's how he felt but the kid had never actually said anything. His heart just melted, he couldn't believe his kid called out to him in distress and he was the one causing it. But he knew he had to be strong and he knew Mike would be very embarrassed after all of this so he hardened his heart again and held tighter onto the kid, nodding to the doctor once.

As they both told the kid before, everything was done in just a few moments. The doctor finished applying the medicine and turned his back on them to put everything away, allowing them some privacy.

Harvey let go of Mikes arms and legs, surprise when the kid didn't immediately jump up like he always did after a spanking, so he let him stay there, rubbing a comforting hand on his back until his sobs became just a little bit of crying and he was able to stand up.

"Are you okay buddy?" he asked. Mike didn't answer, but gave a tiny nod, wiping some tears off his face. Harvey stood up and handed him his clothes "get dressed so we can be going" He ordered.

Mike did and Harvey thanked the doctor and grabbed the prescription he was handed, making a mental note to ask Donna to order it and send it to his condo.

When they got to the car, the kid had still a few tears left but he was breathing normally again, so Harvey knew that it was more resentment than actual pain that was keeping him quiet. They got in the car and he started driving home. He kept stealing small glances and the kid whose face was glued to the window, face lost in thought. That's when he remembered what had happened.

Thinking that maybe that was the moment to address it, not wanting to get the kid all emotional later one he took some minutes to think his next words. Preparing himself for an answer he might not like, he took a big breath and said " It's okay, you know? What you called me earlier" he said, which actually made Mike turn his face and look at him. When he didn't say anything, he decided to continue " I mean, that's technically what I am, it doesn't mean you have to call me that if you don't want to. But if you do, I'm okay with that. More than okay," he said as if in an afterthought. He didn't know what he expected but when the kid smiled at him through his teary face, he didn't need to say anything, he got the answer he needed.
