A clearing in the Meuse Battlefield Memorial on the outskirts of Château-sur-Meuse, 4th of March 2012…
One of the most notable sites of the town yet also one of its less popular tourist attractions would be the Meuse Battlefield Memorial. Originally a verdant hill that was devastated during one of the more decisive battles of World War I against the Germans, the landscape was forever scarred by the traces of the war, the hill reduced to a lump of mud, ash and destroyed weaponry. It was quarantined after the war to be cleaned and cleared of any mines and explosives before the Municipality of Château-sur-Meuse decided to turn it into a memorial in honor of the brave Frenchmen who died to protect their homes. Nature was nothing if not resolute, however, as the formerly destroyed territory grew back into a dense forest that became home to several kinds of small and large critters. While not a tourist hotspot, the forest became a popular hiking spot for the young men and women of Château-sur-Meuse to destress and immerse themselves in mother nature's embrace amongst the soothing sounds of rustles and chirps of the surrounding flora and fauna.
It would thus be a surprising development to hear the distinct sounds of grunts and cries of effort…
"RAFU!"
"URK" a raven-haired young man clad in a shimmering green armor grunted as he rolled to the left to avoid a sword stab from Raphtalia's stand. The sword-wielding being did not let up on Naofumi, not even allowing him to stand properly before it threw a series of attacks his way. The armored stand user was caught off guard and fell on his bum before crawling back frantically to escape his offender. Unfortunately, his efforts were proven to be futile against his enemy's momentum who used his opponent's disadvantageous position to attempt a Coup de Grace. Naofumi had to resort to cross his hands over his head in a very crude guard to block the two-handed overhead slash that came thundering down on him.
The impact of the sword on the young man's armored forearms caused a small shockwave to blow the surrounding grass away and lightly shake the tree leaves at the edge of the clearing that both fighters were using for a spar. Naofumi, seeing as the sword had his arms pinned without actually damaging them, tried to push back against the weapon, grunting from the effort it took to even so much as move it a little.
When that endeavor proved to be a failure, the armored young man opted to push himself to the side by exerting all of his strength to tip the blade to his left while attempting to move to the right. His quick thinking was rewarded with a little breathing room to get back to his feet and square himself up.
Seeing as Raphtalia's previous attacks did him no harm, Naofumi had figured his stand would allow him to tank a lot of blows, especially if what he remembered happening two nights ago was real. Thus, he decided on his next logical course of action…
Silence his self-preservation instincts and attempt to rush Raphtalia, who stood to the side, while her stand seemed to be collecting its bearings…
His feet dug into the ground as he launched himself in the young lady's direction, screaming all the while like a desperate man. The pretty brunette's response was, quite cheekily, to bend one of her knees, cock the opposite hip out and embrace herself while looking at her opponent with a half-lidded gaze.
'Is she posing?' Naofumi managed to think incredulously as he used the opening given to throw himself at Raphtalia in a very basic football tackle. The young man flew through the air, carried by an impressive leap…
Only to pass right through a smirking image of the young nurse…
His moment of victory was snatched aways as his face met the ground, once again not doing any damage to him.
'Damn magic ghosts!' He internally screamed, feeling some frustration well up in him, he dug his fingers into the ground and grabbed some of the grass and dirt. Turning around, his eyes met the sight of a fading mirage of Raphtalia as the young nurse-in-training shimmered into existence a few feet away from where he had thrown himself.
Naofumi gritted his teeth and just looked down at the ground, his armor disappearing as its user gave up on the fight. Raphtalia for her part just gazed at the fuming young man calmly and recalled her stand into herself. She waited for Naofumi to get up and dust himself a little, all the while shaking from the adrenaline rush he was still feeling.
After a few minutes of silence, both stand users stewing in their thoughts, Raphtalia decided to speak out.
"That was... actually pretty good" She admitted, as Naofumi shot his head up to look at her incredulously.
"What? But I couldn't land a single hit on you! And we've been at this for hours!" He almost screamed in anger, a result of what amounted to a multitude of consecutive failures at even touching his fellow stand user. His thoughts were turning darker, memories of his helplessness, both in the face of that bitch's accusations, and the resulting backlash from it, the fact he almost turned on his best friend and even made her take care of him.
'All because I'm weak…' he thought in shame and frustration, looking down and clenching his fists.
His dark musings were interrupted by his friend softly bopping his head with her right hand. He looked at her in surprise only to see a soft smile drawn on her face, her eyes showing nothing but kindness.
"Nope!" She said.
"Huh? Bu-" He tried to object but was interrupted with another bop, making him glare at her.
"Nope!" She grinned at him, "None of that nonsense now Naofumi! You haven't been a stand user for more than two days! You couldn't hit me because I have years of experience on you..." She smiled softly and then looked away from him with a frown.
…
"I'm...I'm so sorry Maman! What happened was my fault! I...I was too weak!" she remembered herself crying out these words years ago, while holding her hysterical mother as they kneeled on the ground of her bedroom.
…
"So don't think so badly of yourself… it's… it's not healthy..." She turned to him as she said these words, a soft smile gracing her pretty face once again.
Naofumi's eyes widened at her words and his lip trembled as he fought back tears.
'Raphtalia… You're an angel' he thought in astonishment how much patience she was offering him. Even after he acted like such a brat, and almost threw away their friendship, Raphtalia still proved to be the kind and beautiful soul he knew by sticking with him through his troubles and even helping him stand back on his own two feet.
"I...Raphtalia…" His mouth tried to formulate something, anything, to express his gratitude but his tongue turned to lead as he once again gazed at his friend.
His best friend.
"...thank you" He finally whispered the words and his friend's smile widened.
Raphtalia grinned at Naofumi and threw an encouraging thumbs up in his direction.
"Don't worry mon chère Naofumi, we'll get you strong enough to protect yourself!" She exclaimed but raised an eyebrow when the ravenette raised a hand to calm her down.
"...and you as well…" He said, this time surprising the brunette as he continued "Raphtalia, what you've done for me… saving me… taking care of me… I can never repay you for this debt I owe you…" She opened her mouth to interject but he spoke over her "But I hope that I can use my strength to keep us both safe…" He finished with a rare smile of his own, something that had Raphtalia's cheeks coloring slightly before she mirrored him.
They both plopped down under one of the trees, sitting in its shade as they relaxed.
"Whatever comes next..." Raphtalia began, turning to Naofumi.
"...We'll weather through it together" he continued as she nodded.
"Ensemble!" She confirmed happily by clapping her hands together, earning a genuine smile from her friend.
Sometime later…
Naofumi and Raphtalia walked on the cobblestone path that stretched from the memorial's main entrance, both sweaty yet Naofumi considerably more so than Raphtalia. The ravenette had dismissed his stand earlier, leaving him in just a green tracksuit with a white undershirt, the latter of which retained its clean state despite the many tumbles Naofumi took that morning.
They found a small bench at the side and decided to take some well-deserved rest and hydrate themselves with some pristine mineral water from a brand that Naofumi preferred.
The two stand users leaned back into the aging wood to properly relax, only for Naofumi to wince a little, thus worrying his friend. Naofumi had insisted on today's training despite Raphtalia's very reasonable concerns, both as his friend and a future professional in her chosen field. Despite what she had said, Naofumi's stand seemed to lessen the pain he felt. It honestly felt like his stand was telling him to stick his neck out and risk anything. But now that it was dismissed, the bruises coupled with his now sore muscles from a lack of exercise made his previous pain resurface tenfold,, even with all the ointment he put on his back and the analgesic Raphtalia gave him.
Ignoring the pain and closing his eyes, he let the sounds of nature calm his troubled mind, not aware of the worried looks Raphtalia kept sending him.
After a few minutes of silence, the young cook opened his eyes and looked sideways, gazing thoughtfully at his friend. The young man had to strain lest his eyes fall upon his friend's heaving bosom, restrained by a grey tank top that did nothing but accentuate how blessed she was. His eyes briefly roamed over her toned legs, covered in a black pair of shorts that thankfully reached to her knees.
As if sensing his eyes on her, the brunette looked at him from the side and threw him a gentle smile, her cheeks unknowingly gaining a light dusting of pink. She adjusted the russet-colored jacket she had tied around her waist and crossed one of her legs over the other, humming quietly all the while and idly wiggling one of her sneaker-clad feet.
He flushed.
'Oh no! she's hot~' he briefly thought in embarrassment before mentally karate-chopping himself.
'Now's not the time for this… stupid brain...' he reprimanded himself.
While Naofumi had mellowed down over the last few days, the incident seemed to have lit a still-raging fire in his heart; one that still, and likely will always stay burning because of what happened.
While Raphtalia had done her best to be his rock, just as he had been for her months ago, his anger had continued to simmer, never fully being tamed.
Raphtalia…
She really was the best, he didn't care how many times he reiterated that simple fact, he would always stand by his opinion and carry nothing but adoration for his best friend, a girl so unique that calling her a Painite was not out of the question. Meeting her was a blessing and he honestly did not know, nor did he want to imagine, where he would have ended up if she wasn't by his side in the last few days. So while the negativity infecting a part of his soul would likely never fully disappear, the young nurse had done a phenomenal job fighting it and healing him. This was one of the many reasons he would forever abide by what he had told the young woman yesterday.
Come Hell or high water he will protect her.
He had come to realize upon Raphtalia's earlier explanation that there would naturally be other Stand Users out there. He still did not know how he got his power, but the simple fact that there could be other individuals out there with similar if not deadlier skills that could be encountered in the future made mastering his new abilities a necessity.
The fact he had no significant offensive abilities did not discourage him as much as he thought he would. From what he gathered, his Stand acted like an armored suit and prevented most if not all damage from reaching him. He wouldn't dare call himself indestructible and become a reckless fool but it was nice to know that he wouldn't be completely useless in a fight.
He'd be the Shield to Raphtalia's Sword.
"So…" began Naofumi, making his companion perk up in attention.
"Hmm?" Raphtalia's tea-red eyes looked at him inquisitively.
"I wanted to ask this really weird question, but are these things - the stands I mean - like… alive or something?" Naofumi finished somewhat lamely as if thinking the question itself was stupid.
'Idiot! Mine's a piece of armor of course it's not alive… is it?' he scratched his head in thought.
"Hmmm...pas vraiment, some do talk-" the brunette started.
"RAFU!" the stand cried out excitedly as if answering a roll call. He'd call it cute was it not for its somewhat unsettling robotic appearance.
"...Yeah like that, and others even have a distinct personality that would usually be the user's own subconscious coming to the surface…" She continued.
Naofumi nodded but was inwardly disappointed. How come Raphtalia gets a cool ghost and all he has is a stupid outfit? He could imagine Raphtalia's stand as something that would make anyone's life easier. Not only did it provide a second set of hands to do anything the user wished but it also came with an awesome ability like an illusion?
It's a wonder Raphtalia didn't become a Magician! She'd probably make a fortune!
"Don't look so glum, your stand is a unique one" the brunette said softly while once again holding onto one of Naofumi's hands.
"It's literally just armor though…" the ravenette intoned glumly.
"Very strong armor" she insisted "Naofumi, you have to understand something, even though my stand has an illusionary ability, it still classifies as a close-range power type, meaning that its strength is well within the realm of the superhuman" she explained in an attempt to cheer him up. She wasn't even lying, she'd seen her stand to punch through thick concrete and bend steel with relative ease, the fact that it didn't leave so much as a scratch on Naofumi's stand only spoke of the young man's powerful ability.
'It reminds me of Tonton's stand in a way…'
"I...fine I guess, I'll just have to experiment a bit more with it to figure out the limits of that durability" Naofumi finally relented and slumped back on the bench, wincing once again as another wave of pain washed over his back.
After a while, he spoke again.
"Soooo does it have a name?" He figured he might as well distract himself and sate his curiosity at the same time.
Raphtalia perked up and smirked, briefly summoning her stand once again as the humanoid seemed to take on a more 'edgy' pose.
"Mon chère Naofumi Iwatani, meet [Pretenders]" She finished coolly.
Silence came over the area.
…
…
"I think 'Raph-Chan' is better"
"Naofumi!"
They spoke a little more, mostly Naofumi asking additional questions about stands and such. Raphtalia, to her credit, did her best to answer all of her friend's inquiries but seemed to go silent whenever the subject of the origin of these things was brought up. The ravenette saw how the question itself was making her fidgety and nervous, he would have pried into it but convinced himself not to. He owed Raphtalia a lot, her even telling him about his stand was already enough.
He still had to name it but he'll think about it some other time.
As the sun started to reach its zenith, both young adults stretched before deciding to call it a day and return to the Shiragaki household.
Naofumi opted to stop on the way to buy some groceries. He planned to make the Shiragakis a quiche to at least show some appreciation for their help and despite Raphtalia's protests, he could tell from the particular gleam in her eye that she was pretty excited to eat his food.
He would have usually shared that excitement, today however was not the case. He had noticed it after the incident, but food had lost its taste to him and become nothing more than bland slop.
'Until now that is'
Maybe it was Raphtalia and her mother's unconditional support for him or maybe it was the shock of the incident but Naofumi did notice his breakfast that morning had started to taste a little less like cardboard.
'Add 'Curing Depression' to the list of things that girl can do...heh'
As the two reached the steps leading to the Shiragaki household, a faint melodic voice reached them, complemented by a piano accompaniment. As they made for the door, the voice became more recognizable, having a gorgeous timbre to it despite its distinct childish and innocent tone.
The person singing was clearly a small girl, one that both college students knew and cherished very dearly.
~~ "Alouette, gentille alouette" ~~
.
~~ "Alouette, je te plumerai" ~~
.
~~ "Je te plumerai le bec"
.
Even though the lyrics were in French, Naofumi understood them and recognized the particular song being performed. It was a classic children's song that most kids in France were taught in school and one that his little friend loved to sing for some reason.
~~ "Je te plumerai le bec" ~~
.
~~ "Et le bec, et le bec" ~~
.
~~ "Et la tête, et la tête" ~~
.
Raphtalia started to fiddle with the lock, trying to open the door as quietly as possible so as to not interrupt their little friend's performance.
~~ "Alouette, Alouette" ~~
.
~~ "Oh, oh, oh, oh" ~~
.
Just as both young adults came through the entrance and the brunette turned to close the door, the latter chose that moment to creak rather audibly, therefore halting the music in its tracks. The rapid pitter-patter of feet resounded in the hallway as a young blonde girl clad in a pair of light blue PJs came barreling out of the living room with a squeal.
"Mast-ah Naofumi! Grande sœur Raphie!" the ten-year-old girl screamed at the top of her lungs as she ran as fast as her tiny legs could carry her, an expression of absolute delight on her heart-shaped face.
"Wait! Filo! Wait! Let me put down my groceries! ATTENDS!" Naofumi screamed in panic as he scrambled to put the food down.
The young blonde child did not wait, she did the exact opposite of waiting, she leaped in a (quite impressive) tackle, aiming to glomp the ravenette's chest.
Just as Naofumi raised his arms to catch the girl, grocery bags still in hand, he felt Raphtalia press against his back and pry the bags out of his grip.
Had it been any other situation, the man would've been embarrassed from his companion's assets briefly pressing into his back. But as it stood, most of his attention was diverted to catching the golden-haired missile trying to ram into him.
"Weeeeeeeeeeeeee" squealed Filo, nothing but excitement shining in her crystal blue eyes, as Naofumi's bigger hands caught her by the armpits, and moved with the momentum into a small twirl.
"I missed you! Did you get me candy?!" the young girl exclaimed, much to Naofumi and Raphtalia's amusement.
It amazed him how Filo could sound so much like a tiny puppy sometimes, always happy to see either of them and to greet them energetically, before asking for sweets and treats. Her nickname for him only added to the comparison.
Filo was the Shiragakis' neighbor but ironically spent more time in Raphtalia's home than she did her own. While her parents were nothing if not loving, their jobs tended to pull them into long journeys across Europe, forcing them to leave their child with their neighbors. Filo had practically grown up with the Shiragakis and came to see Raphtalia as her big sister, a role that the kind brunette was only delighted to take on.
Naofumi smiled down at the girl, "I'm sorry Filo, I didn't think to, BUT!" He exclaimed when the child threw him an adorable pout "I have something better! How does a Quiche Lorraine (1) sound for lunch sound?"
Seeing Filo's pout lessen slightly, he grinned and decided to take out the big guns.
"Aaaaandd how would the little lady like some homemade Macarons (2) for dessert?"
The reaction was immediate, Filo threw her arms in the air before hugging Naofumi's neck.
"YAY! Merci Mast-ah! You're the best!" Squealed the happy child, now anticipating the feast of flavors she would be treated to.
"Ahem?" a voice inquired from behind them. Naofumi turned around to face Raphtalia, letting go of Filo as he did so and letting her hold on to his neck and sway in content.
The said brunette stood with her hands on her hips, a pout of her own adorning her face.
"I thought I was the best Filo hmmm?" the young nurse inquired, her tone filled with mirth.
Filo did not miss a beat "Well Mast-ah Naofumi is the best Mast-ah! Raphie is still the best Grande soeur in the whole wide world" she simply said as if stating a common fact.
At that answer, Raphtalia's pout turned into a grin, the young woman practically launched herself at the two, enveloping them in a hug and sandwiching Filo in the middle.
Following the trio's laughter and giggles, a middle-aged woman emerged from the living room and walked towards them with a smile.
"Welcome back you two, I hope you've had fun, are you still hurting Naofumi?" the widowed Shiragaki Matriarch greeted them with a happy yet somewhat worried tone. The mother looked like an older Raphtalia, although with darker shoulder-length brown hair and thicker eyebrows. Her face bore the traces left by a year of mourning, grief, and stress, and yet she tried her best to remain strong for her family.
"Hello Shiragaki-san, I'm doing well. The ointment is a miracle worker." Naofumi lied quickly as to not worry the woman any further than she already was.
"Bonjour Maman! Filo didn't cause any trouble I hope?" Raphtalia asked as she disengaged from the group hug and went to embrace her mother.
"Oh no, she was such a sweetheart. I just wish you'd have come earlier to listen to the little concert we put up" Mrs. Shiragaki complimented the little girl, making her beam and jump from Naofumi's hold and grin up at her surrogate aunt.
"Merci Tatieee!" She exclaimed, bouncing in place.
"We heard Filo's singing and your piano from outside, it was beautiful" Raphtalia complimented the little girl who grinned and her mother who threw her a small smile.
"Mast-ah come on! I'm hungryyyyy!" Filo then remembered Naofumi's words and started whining and jumping from impatience.
"Alright, Filo, just a minute okay?" Naofumi replied before looking at Mrs. Shiragaki and bowing deeply towards the other three, startling them.
"Naofumi? Wha-" the mother tried to say in surprise but the ravenette cut her off, eyes glued to the ground and his face scrunched in a determined and fierce expression. Raphtalia seemed to know where this was going and looked at her friend fondly while Filo was confused at her Master's sudden action.
"Shiragaki-san, Raphtalia-chan, Filo-chan. I want to thank you all for everything you've done for me. You've offered me a second home, a second family, and made my life here better. I swear to do all I can to protect and support you" The young man finished, and remained in his position. He was never one for honorifics but he felt that this was the least he could do. He needed to reaffirm to the family and to himself that their bond of trust had remained strong despite the events of that day. He had come to cherish the Shiragakis and Filo as his second family, the only other person who ever came close to being so important to him was his younger brother. His parents had long since given up on him and only agreed to send him here as a 'payback' for helping what they saw as their prized horse back on the right track. It was part of the reason he chose to travel so far across the globe.
The two Shiragakis were speechless and even if she had expected this, Raphtalia still felt her face slightly color. Filo looked at her big sister with a grin, as if knowing the effect Naofumi's words had on her. Finally, the mother broke the silence and went into a bow of her own.
"Naofumi, thank you for your words of kindness, and rest assured that you've already done more than enough". Upon seeing the young lift his head to interject, she continued "You've been a dear friend to Raphtalia and practically Filo's older brother in the short time you knew us, you've stood by us even when my husband…" the woman trailed off as a few tears garnered in her eyes. Raphtalia cast a worried look to her mother as the latter recollected herself and continued "I guess… what I mean to say is that you're already a member of this family, and the family looks out for one another...always" she finished.
"Always" Raphtalia confirmed while Filo nodded happily and ran up to hug Naofumi's waist.
"Heheheee Mast-ah!" the child giggle happily as Naofumi ruffled her golden hair.
…
"Can we eat now?" Filo asked.
The house would be filled with laughter for the rest of the day, and Naofumi felt relieved, knowing he had people he could always count on.
If only this serenity could last forever...
Captain Idol Rabier's office, that evening…
The rotund policeman sat behind his desk, going through a case that had him twirling his mustache in contemplation. Spread out before him were the many reports he received from Mr. Henri DuFour and his accomplices' interrogations, even the two injured ones at the hospital whom he had sent one of his subordinates to question.
What puzzled him about the case was a couple of factors.
Naofumi Iwatani, the victim of this assault, was not seen at the scene by the police. A strange fact considering he was reportedly beaten for around twenty to thirty minutes before the squad intercepted the aggressors. The alley was a dead end with the only possible exit other than the roof, which wasn't an option for an injured man, had been surrounded by cops from all sides, thus allowing a swift arrest of all the suspects. There was simply no rational way for the victim to have disappeared into thin air.
Most of the suspects with the exception of Henri and the man whose wrist was shot gave the same testimony. That Henri had shot the two injured young men with a clear intent to harm them. However, even under the influence of [Big Boss Man], Henri had given an opposing testimony, that he had aimed the gun at Naofumi Iwatani's head initially and then had aimed to shoot Naofumi in the stomach. The injured young man had helpfully supplied that he felt a crushing grip and tug on his arm before it was shot.
To add to the mystery, three of the suspects had reported that their blunt weapons had broken off at the same time against the young man's back.
All in all the situation seemed utterly Bizarre.
Idol twirled his mustache.
"Could it be?" he pondered out loud.
Any event that went against common sense usually had few explanations in this world.
Either it was false testimony, something Idol hurriedly considered impossible given the effect of his stand; or it was a miracle, the work of the supernatural.
The work of a stand!
Idol narrowed his eyes and hurriedly dialed the number of the front desk.
"Monsieur Ake! Bring me any documentation we may have on a 'Naofumi Iwatani'!" He barked into the phone, barely hearing the intern's stuttered reply before he hung up.
He crossed his fingers and waited for the needed files to be delivered. While he doubted it would offer much to solve this mystery, he needed any lead to work on. If Iwatani truly was a stand user, then that made him an unknown variable.
Idol Rabier abhorred unknown variables.
He would get to the bottom of this, if the young man turned out to be a stand user, well…
'He'd get the same treatment as dear Henri'

I'll just say that this is the figurative 'calm before the storm'.
Some might be wondering why this Naofumi is far less bitter or 'edgy' (God I hate using that adjective) than in canon.
The reason is simple: He had Raphtalia as a close friend prior to the incident.
Canon Naofumi had no one to stand up for him when the accusations were made. He had come to the new world expecting a classic Isekai adventure only to be brutally backstabbed by an admittedly beautiful girl who claimed to be his companion, someone he was supposed to trust.
His canon behavior is actually pretty mellow compared to what other people would've done, at least he stuck to his values unlike some other piece of shit MC from recent controversial anime hentai.
Fuck Redo of Healer, fuck its MC, and fuck every idiot that thinks that garbage can ever be compared to Shield Hero.
