Footsteps echoed through the corridor, shattering the frail silence as they paced back and forth. Now and again the silence would descend as the pacer paused but it would soon be pushed aside as they resumed walking. They kept stopping outside a certain door however, one that they'd been behind many times.
Infirmary
What had happened that morning? They had been hiding in their room but then people had been running around and shouting and they didn't know what had happened. Did it have something to do with the new girl Maka? She appeared slightly unhinged to them. She'd probably lost it.
"Crona?" A weary and bemused voice pulled them from their thoughts. They immediately cringed, shrinking into themselves as the white haired boy Soul approached. He look tired, the bags under his eyes almost resembling bruises.
"G-g-g-gotta go," Crona stammered, spinning on their feet and dashing away as fast as they could. Soul just stared after them, making no move to follow.
Just as Crona was about to round the corner and disappear, Soul called out for them to wait.
"They say Maka's going to be ok," The boy said simply. "I heard from them."
"R-r-right," Was all Crona could say before they finally moved around the corner and vanished from Soul's view point. Their breath coming out in short pants, they ran, rushing through the corridor back to their room.
Once there, they shoved a doorstopper under the door, lunged for the bed and buried themselves under the blanket.
They wouldn't move until the next afternoon.
Soul watched Crona run away, feet hitting the ground loudly. Crona wasn't one to wander the halls at night, they must have been really curious as to what had happened in the afternoon. Everyone had been.
Right now, Soul was just as confused. Azusa had refused to let anyone in to see Maka. When asked if they could see Kid, they had been refused on the account of Maka being in the room anyway and then they would be seeing her anyway. Liz had stormed off, snapping about Maka not being sick and wanting to see her friends. This had led to everyone leaving.
Soul scratched at his rather fluffy white hair and peered blearily at the infirmary door. Even though he couldn't sleep, he was still tired (he just couldn't sleep) meaning it was hard for him to see things properly. At least he was looking at something big. Was it locked? Could he sneak in and see Maka? Kid would probably be awake. He might have even snuck out of the room already. Maybe Maka had left too! What if the room was empty?
Then again…infirmary patients were under strict instructions to stay in there under the threat of being stuck in there for another day. And whilst the infirmary was nicer than most places, it was not very private and you were almost always being watched by nurses and therapists.
Soul crept over to the door and pushed the handle down, hoping it wouldn't be locked. He was delighted when it kept moving down without any physical objections. With a muttered whisper for someone unseen to shut up, he slipped inside the room.
Kid blinked as he peered around the room. It was very dark, almost too dark to see anything. Maka was sleeping peacefully (lucky) but as usual, he was awake. He'd fallen asleep last night and he'd woken up screaming due to nightmares of…unpleasant memories. He was determined not to fall asleep tonight.
Then again, he wished that Maka was awake so that he'd have someone to talk to. Usually he and Soul met up but he'd been told by the nurse that he could leave tomorrow if he stayed in bed tonight. Another night in the infirmary would drive him insane.
"Do you know why I'm here Maka?" Kid asked into the darkness, oblivious to the fact that Crona was currently right outside the door. "I'm just like you, too afraid to admit anything."
"Better not let anyone hear you say that." A familiar and welcomed voice said dryly as the door creaked open before being shut silently. "You'll be integrated to next year."
"You don't know that," Kid whispered, sitting up and sliding out of bed. "We're meant to be nice and respect each other's privacy in here."
"Since when did that stop anyone?" Soul remarked, moving over to stand next to Kid. "Every day I get pestered." Kid laughed.
"Yeah but not by us,"
"Ah, shut up," Soul shot back, nudging Kid good naturedly.
"Shh," Kid held a finger to his lips. "Remember I'm not alone this time." Even though it was too dark for Soul to see, Kid gestured over to the sleeping Maka.
"Bloody hell it's dark in here," Soul grumbled. "Can we just go out into the corridor? You won't get in trouble…I think."
"Ahh!" A short, sharp cry startled both the boys and they heard the sounds of sheets ruffling and feet hitting the floor. Then there came the sound of footsteps and suddenly someone was crashing into Kid sending him toppling to the floor with the someone on top of them.
"What the?" The person yelped.
"Oof," was all Kid said as the breath was knocked from him. There was a small crashing sound before a bedside lamp flickered on. Kid blinked at the sudden bombardment of light and saw that it was Maka sitting on his chest. Well that was rather obvious, who else would be in the room apart from Soul.
Said boy was standing next to the lamp he'd switched on.
"Be quiet," the teen hissed. "Or we'll really be in trouble."
"Didn't stop you from coming in." Kid couldn't help but hiss, staring up at Maka who stared back down at him blankly. "Um Maka, would you mind getting off my chest?"
"Oh right, sorry." the depressed teen scrambled off, hugging her chest and shivering in the cold air. She was dressed only in a grey tank top and knee length track pants. Her hair was loose and hung around her shoulders in blonde curtains.
"Nice look," Soul smirked. Maka shot him a dirty look before blinking at him in surprise.
"Um, what the hell are you doing here?" She snapped, sounding indignant. "You were not in here when I went to sleep."
"Yep, because the whole world stands still when you're asleep." Soul said sarcastically.
"Shut up," Maka muttered, appearing somewhat shaken up over something. Her eyes flickered over to Kid who frowned back at her. She looked away quickly. "Listen if you guys are gonna stay awake, just keep quiet." She bit her lip before hastily climbing back into bed and burying herself under the covers.
"Come on Kid, let's just go outside." Soul pleaded. "It's like what…three in the morning. No one will be up."
"Except us," Kid pointed out.
"Yeah, except us." Soul sighed. "Just come on man, it's uncool to stay in here and keep Maka awake."
"Yes it is," the muffled snappish sounding voice came from under the covers.
"See there you have it." Soul exclaimed though quietly. He reached over, flicked off the lamp and all but dragged Kid out of the infirmary, shutting the door softly behind him. Any light coming from the corridor was sealed off by the shut door, the room plunged once again into darkness.
Maka sat up in bed, staring into the darkness where she was sure the door was situated. Despite telling the boys to shut up so she could sleep again, sleep was far from her mind. Much like the night before, a nightmare had roused her. She was lucky she hadn't screamed as much before or Soul and Kid would have heard her and pestered her about what was wrong. They would have done that right?
She couldn't hear anything from outside which either meant the two insomniacs were talking very quietly, weren't talking at all or had moved a distance away from the door. Probably the first option, Kid had said something about not leaving the infirmary unless permission was given by the nurse and therapist.
"Someone help me!"
Maka grabbed her head and squeezed her eyes shut as the tormented cry from her dream floated back to her. The moment she closed her eyes however she saw…
The body fell down the stairs till it came to a stop, motionless and bloody…
NO! Stop it! Stop showing it! I don't even understand what's going on. Leave me alone!
Maka…
No
Maka…
Just stop, go away
Poor little Maka, no one listens to her
Don't say it
Poor invisible Maka. She tries to speak and no one hears
I don't want to hear it
Would you get rid of your brain Maka?
No…
Heart?
No!
Well I'm just like them. You can't get rid of me. I slip and slide through your mind. I know everything about you. Deepest fears, biggest wishes…desires…hates…loves
No you don't!
Your memories…
You can't
Remember year three? No one would let you sit next to them on the bus so you stood the entire four hour bus ride to camp?
No…no…no
Yes…yes…yes
And no matter how many times Maka screamed no, the answer would always be yes. There was no escaping the truth. Even now, she was alone. It was just her in the darkness, cold with nothing but the voice inside her head to talk to.
And she hated 'talking' to the voice.
My dear child, why do you hate me? All I ever do, all I ever will do, is share with you the utter and utmost truth. My dear child, isn't it a sin to lie?
Kid was allowed to go back to his room in the morning. Maka however, was not allowed too. Even though she was physically fine, Marie refused to release her.
"Come on Marie," Maka pleaded. "The infirmary is for sick people. I'm fine!"
Marie sighed in affectionate exasperation and shook her head, tucking the bundle she held tighter under her arm.
"Trust me on this one, please Maka." Marie was being frustratingly secretive. "It'll be clear in a bit and you'll be let out tonight."
"But I wanna know now." Maka muttered childishly, too tired and crabby to bother about being kind. She'd barely slept for the past two nights.
"Just get some rest Maka and in about two hours, you'll understand." Marie suggested, handing Maka the bundle she held, a couple of books and a folded piece of paper. She then left the room to go do magic therapist things like reading minds and being super secretive.
Maka set the books on her lap, not bothering to check what they were and opened the folded paper, hoping for an explanation as to what was going on or Doctor Stein saying she could leave.
You said you liked the Cat and Kid series and when I went to your room to bring you some books, I noticed you didn't have any of the series. I hope you enjoy
Azusa
Maka stared at the spidery writing before setting the note aside and staring down at the two books, the cover of the first one showing a small boy with cat ears completely shrouded in the shadowy figure of a girl. The second cover showed the shadow of two figures up against a wall, the floor splattered with paint that made the title.
"The first two books," Maka breathed, flipping open the brand new book (the first one) and scanning the first few pages. "Why…how?"
'Don't bother with the how' the books seemed to be begging her. 'Just read us.'
And for once, Maka was happy to oblige the strange imaginary voice in her head's wishes. She was soon immersed in the thrilling plot that she remembered from year seven about evil scientists, strange boys and troubled girls. She was so caught up that she forgot about being tired, forgot the cryptic nightmares and she even forgot about her anger over whatever Marie had kept her in bed for.
Professor Mouse reached out for my hand, the slime from the rotten carcass of the cow he'd been hiding behind congealing as we stood in the walk in freezer. Fear shot through me, mingling with the permanent determination I felt. He would not take me back. But as my eyes scanned the icy blue room, I couldn't see…
"Maka! Surpise!"
She soon remembered though because standing in her room were all the kids, waving and shouting and beaming. Liz was holding a cake, Patty a pile of presents and Tsubaki, a large clump of tinsel.
"We had to use the tinsel from Christmas." BlackStar burst out. "Because I set fire to the streamers last week when we celebrated Ellen leaving. You don't know her because she left before you came obviously since you weren't here last week. She was dealing with an inferiority complex but then she did something and…" he trailed off due to loss of breath.
"Uh…" Maka set the book down, slightly annoyed at having to do so because she was in the middle of a thrilling part. But then again, what the hell was going on? Why were all the kids, even Crona in the infirmary with party items?
"It's a welcoming party!" Marie popped up from nowhere and applied her magical therapist mind reading powers. "It's a tradition. We haven't held one in ages!"
"But why keep me in here because of a party?" Maka watched as Patty dumped the presents on her bed.
"Stupid right," Kim remarked from the back of the group. "Some ridiculous reason of you being easier to find."
"That's enough Kim," Marie chided gently. "We're here to have a good time. It's a special day for Maka and we want to have fun." Kim snorted but fell silent.
Maka turned a present over in her hands as one of the cooks brought in party food and BlackStar cleared (threw everything off) a table to put it on. They were crazy. What a stupid reason to have a party.
But still…it was nice. She'd never really had a party and here she was having one for a really stupid reason and well, she liked it. Maka felt important and less alone, more than she'd felt in a long time.
"Open it!" Patty chanted and for once, Liz didn't silence her. The teen just seemed so happy so carefree. She even seemed less paranoid.
"Well," Maka said quietly to herself, sliding a finger under a strip of sticky tape. "I might as well enjoy it. It'll never last."
Ughhhh I hate this chapter and it took forever…it's a bridge I guess…not a filler…a bridge!
Please review and don't hate…I've had kind of a bad week…*sighs*
