The Fifty Third Annual Hunger Games
Introduction
With so many years of successful arenas and Games, Cyndala Clargy managed to remain the Head Gamemaker once more, although she had several young competitors for the position that would soon give her tough competition for the spot. Cyndala continued to create natural arenas, but this year she tied in a civilized element in order to entertain people who were bored by entirely natural arenas. The singular clip she released was a weathervane on top of a rotting red barn spinning crazily from the gusts of a storm. This made people believe they were in for some sort of tornado-inspired arena, and they were excited to see the chaos that this would cause. Coriolanus Snow remained the President of Panem, and he would not leave his position anytime soon. After the deposing of Jolyon Ericson the year prior, no major movements started in the Capitol as everyone was too afraid of the vast authority Snow held over the nation. Small rebellions broke out in District 3 and District 6 after the caring nature of Stacy Otero in the previous Games had shown to Arabelly Smoulders; these Districts were punished heavily, and Snow rigged their Reapings so that weaker or younger tributes would be reaped for sure. Claudius Templesmith and Caesar Flickerman also maintained their positions as the Head Commentators of the Games, as their year-round show had now been on so long that people barely remembered a time before the two men were everywhere. The Careers this year were slightly lackluster compared to previous years, although they could hold their own. The girl from District 1 was a heavy disappointment; the intended volunteer fainted at the Reaping, and a less qualified girl volunteered without the Academy's approval; she was easily the weakest Career of the year, although she was still decent with throwing knives. Her counterpart was standard District 1 fare; a brilliantly handsome blonde boy who excelled with a spear. The pair from District 2 was the most promising; they were both stoicly attractive, with musculed bodies and strong abilities with swords. They were both very levelheaded and focused on Victory. The girl from District 4 was standard fair; a slim, dark haired one who preferred tridents. However, the boy was a party lover, and was more focused on festivities at the Capitol than training. Despite his unfocused attitude, he was great with daggers and was incredibly attractive. This year held the most promising crop of Outliers in years. The standout was Smokey Matthews of District 9; the six-foot-five boy rippled with muscle and had trained himself in combat, managing to earn himself a 9, a feat no Outlier had accomplished since the Canterbury twins in the 42nd Games over a decade prior. He also had created the first Anti-Career alliance in many years; it consisted of his District partner, the pretty ginger Brandy who scored an 8, as well as the pair from 11, Orchard and DeShaun, who earned a 7 and an 8 respectively, and Alpine from 7 who scored a 7. This formidable alliance of 5 was the first rival alliance to the Careers in quite some time. The rest of the tributes scored between 6 and 2, and there were no volunteers besides the Careers. Here are the tributes:
District 1: Alinah Kingham, 17 (8) 12-1 and Bling Miranti, 18 (10) 6-1
District 2: Claudia Stitt, 18 (10) 5-1 and Roman Cosentino, 18 (10) 5-1
District 3: Vivian Connell, 13 (4) 46-1 and Karsten Crest, 14 (5) 30-1
District 4: Sarina Mudas, 18 (10) 7-1 and Tang Tefflen, 18 (9) 9-1
District 5: Keren Patel, 15 (5) 36-1 and Dam Trautman, 17 (6) 24-1
District 6: Reese Skalia, 17 (2) 64-1 and Branden Rickles, 15 (4) 45-1
District 7: Gielle Forrist, 14 (5) 33-1 and Alpine Hiles, 17 (7) 18-1
District 8: Pylene Barrett, 16 (6) 22-1 and Travis Keiding, 12 (3) 59-1
District 9: Brandy Hooper, 18 (8) 13-1 and Smokey Matthews, 18 (9) 9-1
District 10: Darienn Blaus, 16 (4) 48-1 and Sheppard Nowles, 15 (5) 31-1
District 11: Orchard Cannes, 16 (7) 16-1 and DeShaun Braxton, 18 (8) 13-1
District 12: Teena Kimpley, 12 (3) 57-1 and Antony Davreau, 16 (5) 39-1
HGBA Odds: 18% on Roman, 16% on Claudia, 15% on Bling, 12% on Sarina, 10% on Smokey, 9% on Tang, 5% on Alinah, 4% on Brandy and DeShaun, 2% on Orchard, 1.5% on Alpine, 1% or less on Vivian, Karsten, Keren, Dam, Reese, Branden, Gielle, Pylene, Travis, Darienn, Sheppard, Teena, and Antony.
The Games
The 24 tributes rose up into the center of a large corn field. The part where the Cornucopia sat had been cleared out into a barren dirt patch, but around them tall cornstalks grew. The entire arena was a giant abandoned farm. The Cornucopia sat in a central cornfield, and fields of corn, wheat, and barely, as well as various fruits and vegetables, surrounded this central cornfield and stretched out to the ends of the arena. To the north was the farmhouse, a large, sprawling whitewashed ranch with plenty of places to hide and rest. To the west and to the east were two large red and white barns; the western barn contained horses and other farm animals, with animal pens surrounding it. The eastern one contained farming equipment like tractors and plows. To the south, a large lake teeming with fish could be found. For now, the skies were clear blue, and the air was warm and dry. However, thunderstorm clouds could be seen gathering on the horizon, and everyone knew that they would soon pose a threat to the tributes. However, the current threat for all of them was surviving the impending Bloodbath. Within the Cornucopia, swords, spears, sickles, and scythes could be found. Due to the two strong alliances in this Games, an astounding 12 kills would occur within the opening minutes.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
The boys from 6 and 12 ran away into the cornfields when the gong rang, while the other 22 tributes sprinted into the fray. Both the Careers and the Outlying alliance attempted to gather as many supplies as they could and make as many kills as possible. Sarina was the fastest from both alliances, and she swept up a spear and jabbed it into the nearest girl, killing her swiftly.
Darienn Blaus, District 10 Female; 24th, Killed by Sarina, Bloodbath
Smokey grabbed a scythe for himself, while Brandy, DeShaun, and Orchard all grabbed sickles, and Alpine went to the back of the Horn to grab a sword. Meanwhile, the Careers besides the 2s all grabbed spears, while the 2s grabbed swords. Alpine had run deep into the Horn to grab a sword, and Roman cornered him, slicing deep into the boy's neck and quickly felling one of the Outlying alliance's members.
Alpine Hiles, District 7 Male; 23rd, Killed by Roman, Bloodbath
The Outlying alliance quickly tried to make their escape, while the Careers began to spread out to make kills and secure the Cornucopia. Bling managed to spear a boy in the chest as he ran past, making the boy fall to his knees and bleed out quickly.
Dam Trautman, District 5 Male; 22nd, Killed by Bling, Bloodbath
Tang and Alinah worked together with their spears to attack a younger girl attempting to flee with a neon yellow pack stuffed with food. She screamed as they both stabbed into her back with their spears, working together to kill her quickly.
Vivian Connell, District 3 Female; 21st, Killed by Alinah and Tang, Bloodbath
Alinah and Tang split up to go hunt down other tributes. Alinah made the foolish decision of rushing the Outlying alliance on her own; Smokey quickly spotted her, and whirled around with his scythe. He managed to disarm the shocked Alinah and shove her to the ground before digging her scythe into her neck. The 1 girl swiftly bled out as Smokey whacked his scythe's blade deep into her ribcage. Then, he instructed his alliance to run, knowing that the murder of one of the Careers would intesify the attacks against them.
Alinah Kingham, District 1 Female; 20th, Killed by Smokey, Bloodbath
As the Outlying alliance was trying to make their escape, the girl from 7 attempted to run beside them and join their group. However, DeShaun pushed her to the ground and sliced into her neck with his sickle, making her gurgle up blood and die quickly.
Gielle Forrist, District 7 Female; 19th, Killed by DeShaun, Bloodbath
DeShaun had fallen behind his allies when he stopped to kill Gielle, and they had not slowed to wait for him. Roman and Claudia were intent on killing more of the Outlying alliance and sprinted towards him while DeShaun tried to escape. Meanwhile, Sarina attacked another girl near the Horn with her spear, stabbing it into her chest as she wailed painfully. The little brown skinned girl crumpled and swiftly bled out on the dirt.
Keren Patel, District 5 Female; 18th, Killed by Sarina, Bloodbath
DeShaun tried to outrun Roman and Claudia, but they closed in on him. Working together, Roman was able to tackle the running boy and disarm him. He screamed for help, but Smokey, Brandy, and Orchard knew trying to help him would just get themselves killed. They disappeared into the cornfield as Claudia brought her blade down on the 11 boy's neck, killing him and lessening the power of the Outlying alliance.
DeShaun Braxton, District 11 Male; 17th, Killed by Claudia, Bloodbath
While the Outlying alliance had made a swift exit, many other tributes were still in the Cornucopia clearing, attempting to flee. Tang cornered the 3 boy on the side of the Cornucopia, and shoved him hard against the metal structure before slamming his spear into the boy's gut, killing him.
Karsten Crest, District 3 Male; 16th, Killed by Tang, Bloodbath
Claudia and Roman were both hungry for more kills, and they sprinted after two tiny tributes; the two 12 year olds, Travis of 8 and Teena of 12, were trying to escape with packs of food and water. Travis was able to run faster than Teena, and shrugged off his pack and sprinted away as Roman attacked Teena and decapitated her.
Teena Kimpley, District 12 Female; 15th, Killed by Roman, Bloodbath
Claudia sped up to intercept Travis, and her much longer stride and athleticism allowed her to catch up to the boy. He wailed as she slammed her sword into his side, cutting deep into his flesh. The 8 boy staggered from the grievous wound, and Claudia polished him off with a stab to the back of the neck.
Travis Keiding, District 8 Male; 14th, Killed by Claudia, Bloodbath
The clearing was almost entirely clear of tributes, except for the tall, sandy haired Reese. A morphling addict from District 6, she was too frail, and the opening sprint had burned through her energy reserves. Trying to crawl blurredly into the corn, Bling found her and stabbed her in the back until she flopped over soundlessly, officially ending the Bloodbath.
Reese Skalia, District 6 Female; 13th, Killed by Bling, Bloodbath
The five remaining Careers began to clear the bodies of the dead to the edge of the field for the hovercraft to retrieve before they began to organize the supplies inside the Horn. They were thirsty to go hunting and explore the arena, knowing far more lay beyond than cornfields, but they also knew it would be smart to rest up for the day. They were annoyed to see Alinah taken out by the Outlying alliance, but she had been more of a nuisance than anything to the rest of the Careers with her subpar skills. No one was too broken up over her death, not even her District partner Bling. They prepared to go hunting the next morning, intent on thinning the herd even more than they already had. Branden had run right away from the Bloodbath with nothing, and he had sprinted south as fast as his malnourished body could carry him. He managed to make it to the large southern lake by nightfall, and he curled up in the reeds on the shore of the lake and fell asleep quickly. Pylene had made it away from the Bloodbath with a maroon pack; when she settled down in the eastern barn, she opened it and found four sleeves of crackers, iodine capsules, a spool of twine, and night vision goggles inside. She ate some of her crackers and fell asleep under a tarp in a corner of the barn. Smokey, Brandy, and Orchard headed north after their escape from the Bloodbath, and they eventually found the white farmhouse waiting for them. They decided it was the best place to set up camp, and once they set up camp in the farmhouse's kitchen, they surveyed their supplies. The girls had sickles and had each also grabbed packs with food and water inside, while Smokey had his scythe as well as an empty pack. Feeling like they were in a decent position, the alliance ate some of their rations before falling asleep and taking turns standing guard. Sheppard went west after getting a loaf of bread and a sickle from the Bloodbath. He found the animal barn, and felt at home since he was from District 10. He settled inside the barn and played with some of the animals to calm himself down. Antony was the other tribute who had run straight away from the Bloodbath, and he had also headed north like the Outlying alliance. He had been planning to hide within the farmhouse, but when he spotted the Outlying alliance coming near it to settle down, he had fled to a shed in the backyard of the farmhouse. It was dangerously close to the force field, but Antony knew if he stayed inside the farmhouse, the alliance would find him and kill him. He huddled without any supplies inside the shed, hoping to remain undiscovered.
On the morning of Day 2, the skies were still clear blue with few clouds, although the storm clouds gathering on the horizon were getting larger and darker, more ominous. The Careers went hunting immediately, deciding to scour the central fields of the arena for any wounded tributes that had been unable to make it far from the Cornucopia. Sarina stayed back to guard the Horn, while the other four split into pairs; the 2s hunted together, while Tang and Bling worked together on the other side of the fields. They found nothing throughout the day, as the tributes had all spread into the farthest reaches of the arena.
The rest of the tributes were rather inert on Day 2. The Outlying alliance wanted to rest for a day and collect themselves, and they were also nervous about hunting and meeting the Careers so early on in the Games. They agreed it might be best to fortify the farmhouse and use it as their own personal stronghold. Brandy brought up the idea of boarding up the windows and destroying the stairs, and they spent much of the day doing this, making it hard for anyone to enter the farmhouse unless they knocked down the front or back doors. They used tools they discovered in the back shed; Antony was hiding inside, but he managed to hide underneath a table and go undetected, although Smokey almost found him. Terrified, Antony fled the shed once the trio returned to the farmhouse to continue fortifying it, and found himself winding through the outermost vegetable fields, eating some of the vegetables he recognized. He settled down in the center of a barley field, hoping he would remain undiscovered.
By the lake, Branden was able to catch a couple of frogs, and he gagged as he forced himself to eat them raw, as he had no idea how to start a fire, and didn't want to draw attention to himself. The raw frogs gave him quite the stomach ache, and the 6 boy laid in the reeds on the edge of the lake, hoping no one would find him while he was trying to regain his composure. In the barn with the tractors and other mechanical equipment, Pylene explored. She found a pitchfork in the hayloft of the barn, and brought it down with her in case she needed to defend herself. However, she really had no idea how to correctly use the weapon. She then tried to see if any of the tractors would turn on, but she had little mechanical knowledge and was unable to start any of them. Sheppard found himself playing with the piglets and the chickens in the barn; none of them were mutts, and were just normal farm animals. After exploring the first barn, he discovered a smaller one behind it. He opened it, and found a beautiful, dark brown horse inside. Sheppard fed the horse some apples piled in a corner of the stable, and named him Luckey, realizing Luckey could be his key to Victory.
On the morning of Day 3, the skies were slowly turning light gray as the first clouds began to move in on the arena. It began to softly drizzle as the Careers picked themselves up and went hunting once more, this time leaving Bling to guard the Cornucopia. The pack split into two duos again, with the 2s and the 4s heading in opposite directions. The 4s headed north to see what they would discover, while the 2s once again decided to sweep the fields surrounding the central Cornucopia cornfield, feeling that they had missed a tribute on their earlier search.
Roman and Claudia's instincts were correct, as around noon they spotted Antony in his barley field, chewing slowly on a cucumber he had discovered the day prior and had not finished eating. The two prowled through the barley quietly, and got about twenty feet from the boy before he noticed them. He wailed and tried to run away, dashing through the barley, but the 2s were taller and stronger, and they caught him quickly. Roman was closer, and he stabbed the boy in the back with his sword. Antony flopped to the ground, gasping for air as Roman stabbed him again, his time slicing through his spinal cord and finishing the 12 boy.
Antony Davreau, District 12 Male; 12th, Killed by Roman, Day 3
Soon after the 2s polished off Antony, Tang and Sarina found themselves at the edge of fields, and they could see the white farmhouse where the Outlying alliance was camped out. They had finished destroying the staircase up to the doors, but they were finishing boarding some of the windows, and the 4s caught glimpses of the three strongest Outliers working together inside to fortify the farmhouse. The 4s quickly sped back to the Cornucopia, where the 2s had come back to rest after killing Antony. They told the other Careers about what they'd discovered, and the pack planned to assault the farmhouse the following day.
Back at the farmhouse, none of the Outlying alliance had noticed Tang or Sarina in the far off vegetable fields, too focused on boarding up the windows to keep the Careers out. The farmhouse was only one story, so they made sure to board up every window in the expansive house, leaving only small cracks for them to peer through to see if any of the other tributes were approaching. Satisfied with their makeshift fortress, the Outlying alliance celebrated by eating a bit more of their rations than they probably should've, and they were sent a sponsor gift of ice cream along with a cryptic sponsor note from Enzo warning them to be careful. Brandy picked up on the clue, and the three prepared for an onslaught from the Careers to be coming soon as they enjoyed their dessert.
The rest of the Outliers were largely uneventful; Branden was beginning to recover from his stomach pains from eating the frogs he had captured raw. He spotted fish in the lake, and began trying to assemble a makeshift fishing pole in order to catch one to eat as well. Pylene remained in her equipment barn, practicing with the pitchfork to get used to it, and then trying once more to start up one of the tractors with little success. Sheppard, however, made great progress on his plan. He was able to coax Luckey out of his stable and he rode him without a saddle slowly around the animal barn. Sheppard had experience riding horses back in his home District of District 10, and while Luckey was not very well trained, Sheppard was able to keep on his back and build trust with him throughout Day 3.
On the morning of Day 4, the Careers assembled their supplies and went to siege the farmhouse. The drizzling rain from the day prior had stopped, although dull gray clouds still hung in the sky. They left behind Tang to guard the Cornucopia, who was extremely excited about the attack. The rest of the pack worried he'd mess up their plan, so they left him to guard. Tang was annoyed, and became bitter towards Roman, who had been the one to suggest that the Fish boy stay back at the Horn. However, Tang obliged, and the other four Careers approached the farmhouse with a special weapon on hand. Claudia had found a small bottle of sherry in the back of the Cornucopia the night prior, and she had formulated a plan about how to take out the Outlying alliance.
The Careers arrived at the farmhouse at around 10 in the morning. Smokey, Brandy, and Orchard were already awake, anticipating action, and they weren't surprised that the Careers were trying to attack in the morning and catch them off guard. The Outlying alliance expected them to try to storm the front door of the farmhouse and force their way in, but the alliance hung back, not approaching the house at first. They could see Claudia fidgeting with something in her hands, and then they saw her strike a match and light a small cloth on fire.
The cloth was attached to the bottle of sherry discovered the day prior; Claudia had fashioned a makeshift bomb. She handed it to Roman quickly, who had the best aim and the strongest arm. He sprinted forward and chucked the burning bottle at the farmhouse, while the Outlying alliance paled in horror and attempted to run out the backdoor. Brandy was at the door first, and she feverishly tried to unlock it when the bomb exploded as it hit the roof of the farmhouse.
Flames rippled across the farmhouse quickly, the dry wood picking up the fire quickly. Brandy managed to unlock the back door and tumble out as the farmhouse began to collapse as fire ravaged and razed the old structure. Smokey pushed his way through the open door after Brandy; all they had managed to grab were their weapons. They looked to see Orchard, who had returned to the kitchen to try and grab their packs. The two 9s realized that Orchard probably would not make it out, and they abandoned her, sprinting into the shed and locking themselves inside in an effort to hide from the Careers, knowing they wouldn't be able to run and escape them.
Meanwhile, Orchard had made the foolish decision of not exiting the burning building, not wanting to leave behind their large supply of food and water. As she slung one of the bags over her shoulder, the roof collapsed over the kitchen, and Orchard was crushed underneath a pile of burning wood and ash. She quickly suffocated, several of her bones broken from the cave-in, and her cannon fired as the Careers began to pick their way towards the farmhouse to look for survivors, intent on wiping out the Outlying alliance in one fell swoop.
Orchard Cannes, District 11 Female; 11th, Killed by burning farmhouse, Day 4
The Careers picked their way around the burning farmhouse, finding no one outside of it. They couldn't search the ruins of the house, but as it collapsed further and began to smolder, they realized that at least two members of the alliance had escaped since only a single cannon had fired. They began to comb through the sides of the farmhouse and the backyard, careful to stay distant from the burning farmhouse since they didn't want to get hurt by any debris.
As the Careers searched the backyard of the burning farmhouse, they noticed the fire was beginning to spread past the house, as the wind carried flaming particles into the nearby vegetable fields and the grass of the backyard. The plants picked up the flames quickly, and soon the fire began to rage across the grass and the vegetable fields. The Careers agreed to come back and search for survivors after the fires settled down, as they didn't want to get trapped by the flames and risk their lives.
As the alliance started to jog back to the Cornucopia, Sarina spotted the small shed wreathed in the shadows. The rest of her alliance was already out of earshot, but Sarina decided to investigate, believing the tributes might be inside, and if she could kill them, she felt that she would be able to differentiate herself from the rest of the pack. Picking around the burning sections of the backyard, she pulled hard on the door of the shed, only to find it locked. She cracked off the lock with the butt of her spear, and wrenched open the door, looking around inside for any victims.
Smokey was standing closer to the door, and he immediately swung his scythe out, digging deep into Sarina's throat. The girl gurgled as she backpedaled off of the weapon, blood drizzling down her chest from her slashed throat. Smokey and Brandy both emerged from the shed carefully, and made a break for it as Sarina bled out and the fires started to rage harder in the northern section of the arena. Her cannon sounded as they escaped towards the west.
Sarina Mudas, District 4 Female; 10th, Killed by Smokey, Day 4
Bling, Roman, and Claudia noticed Sarina was not close to them as they were returning to the Cornucopia, and they realized she may have gotten entangled in a fight and gotten killed when they heard the cannon. Annoyed, they returned to the Horn, and Tang was immediately upset when he saw that Sarina was not with them. He quickly accused the other Careers of killing her on their hunt, and he and Roman began to bicker loudly, with Roman telling Tang to leave the alliance. Claudia and Bling were able to calm the two boys down, but Tang and Roman refused to talk to each other, their relationship almost at the point of splitting the pack.
Meanwhile, the Gamemakers didn't want the fires to destroy much of the arena, and they soon sent heavy rainstorms down on the arena, putting out the fire quickly. However, it had already ravaged most of the northern fields and completely destroyed the farmhouse. The farmhouse and its surroundings were just a charred mess, while there was a lot of clear land in the north with little place to hide. When the rains slowed and the fires had died down, the Careers searched the cleared area for any wounded tributes. They left Claudia to guard the Cornucopia so Tang could hunt and wouldn't get more upset. The Career boys found no wounded tributes and returned to the Cornucopia with no kills to their name for the day.
In the western part of the arena, Smokey and Brandy had found their way to the equipment barn where Pylene had been hiding since the beginning of the Games. She heard them approaching her hiding spot, and she lugged her pitchfork and her pack up into the hayloft. She buried herself beneath the hay and tried to be as quiet as possible before the 9s entered the equipment barn, knowing they would kill her if they discovered her.
Smokey and Brandy were amazed once they discovered the tractors within the barn. Both of them had worked hard, long lives in the grain fields of District 9, and they had ample experience with tractors and other equipment that they found inside of the barn. Excited, the two 9s quickly began working on getting one of the tractors to start, knowing having a vehicle in these Games would be a great advantage to them. Brandy's father had taught her some mechanics, as he was the manager of a farm and knew how to fix many of the farming machines. She was able to make significant headway on getting one of the tractors to start. Pylene stayed hidden in the hayloft of the same barn, with the 9s not noticing her. She was extremely fearful, but believed she could survive if she continued to hide.
The other two tributes left were rather inactive on Day 4. Branden managed to make a makeshift fishing pole with some reeds and a couple fishing hooks that his Mentor Greason managed to send him as a sponsor gift. He used some of the raw frog he had left over as bait, but he was unable to catch any of the fish in the lake. They were too strong, and kept snapping his weak reed poles. Sheppard was continuing to train Luckey the horse, and although he bucked him off once, Sheppard was able to continue building trust with the horse, and was getting better and better at riding him.
On the morning of Day 5, the Careers woke up early and decided to head east to check out what features of the arena could be found there. As they were getting ready to leave, Tang was the last to wake up, and he saw Roman, Bling, and Claudia all geared up and ready to hunt. He angrily asked if he was being left behind to play guard at the Cornucopia once again, and Roman snapped back that he was because he was the weakest and he was unreliable in a chaotic, stressful situation. Tang snapped, telling Roman he should shut up about Tang's abilities or he would show him what he was really made of. Roman laughed and challenged Tang to a one on one duel, right there, right then. Claudia and Bling were both apprehensive, wanting to de-escalate the situation and go hunting again. Bling offered to guard the Cornucopia, but Tang refused, saying he wanted to end this feud between himself and Roman. Realizing that the situation was not recoverable, Claudia and Bling both backed up, hanging back on the edge of the field as Roman and Tang began to circle each other, hashing out their differences violently.
Roman had his sword on hand, while Tang brandished his spear threateningly at Roman. Tang began taunting the 2 boy, trying to distract him and make him lose his focus. However, Roman wouldn't be thrown off, and instead he lunged at Tang suddenly, slicing his sword through the left calf of the 4 boy. Tang howled in pain and darted forward towards Roman, attempting to spear him in the throat. However, his injured leg buckled, and he fell to his knees, his spear falling from his hands. Roman chuckled, not even wounded a bit as he stabbed the blade of his sword into the back of Tang's neck, killing the brash 4 boy.
Tang Tefflen, District 4 Male; 9th, Killed by Roman, Day 5
That left the Top 8: Bling Miranti from District 1, Claudia Stitt from District 2, Roman Cosentino from District 2, Branden Rickles from District 6, Pylene Barrett from District 8, Brandy Hooper from District 9, Smokey Matthews from District 9, and Sheppard Nowles from District 10.
Bling and Claudia were both wary of Roman after he had killed Tang, but Roman put down his blood soaked sword and promised them that he was still loyal to them. He said that the 9s were still out there, and they needed to work together to take them out before they split for good. Claudia and Bling agreed with this, and after Tang's body was removed by the hovercraft, the three suited up to go hunting. Bling remained at the Cornucopia to keep guard, while the 2s headed east to go search the arena. Soon after the 2s disappeared, Bling began packing away some supplies and hiding it in one of the nearby fields. He knew the 2s would team up on him before fighting each other in the soon future, and he wanted to be prepared to run away. However, he didn't want to face the 9s alone, so he remained at the Horn and diligently kept guard while Roman and Claudia crept east.
While the 2s advanced towards the animal barns in the eastern quadrant of the arena, the other tributes were at work. Branden had gotten bored of hanging out by the lake, and was becoming hungry since he had not eaten anything besides the raw frogs on Day 2 while had made him sick. He crept into the nearby cornfields, and wandered until he found a tomato patch. He hungrily ate the vegetables and dozed out in the open, too tired and full to care. However, Branden was lucky and he would go undiscovered for the day. The three tributes in the equipment barn continued their existence, the 9s unaware of Pylene hiding in the hayloft. Brandy nearly started one of the tractors, but realized it was missing a few key parts. She began to deconstruct one of the other tractors for the parts while Smokey kept guard. Pylene was still panicked to be hiding just out of reach of the 9s, and she was very worried they would discover her. However, they did not investigate the hayloft, and Pylene was able to remain in hiding for another day, safe and sound for the time being.
The 2s continued to trek out east, and soon they spotted the animal barns. At the moment, Sheppard was inside the main barn, eating the last of the apples he had found in Luckey's stable. However, he peered outside one of the windows of the barn, and spotted Claudia and Roman advancing on his barn. Freaking out, he sprinted out of the barn and towards the stable where Luckey was waiting. The 2s spotted Sheppard sprinting into the next building, and they gave chase, intent on taking out another tribute and thinning the herd further.
Sheppard was able to make it into the stable quickly, and he roused Luckey and clambered onto the horse's back. The horse was panicked as Sheppard slapped his haunches and tugged on his mane, trying to get him to run out of the stable. Meanwhile, the 2s were just outside of the stable, swords raised. Luckey bolted in fear, sprinting through the open door, and plowing into the 2s.
Claudia screamed as the horse slammed into her, and she flew to the ground, her left arm snapping sickeningly underneath the beast's hooves. As Claudia cursed and staggered to her feet, Roman gave chase, swinging his sword at Luckey. The horse freaked out, neighing loudly, and he bucked a frightened Sheppard off of his back before sprinting away to the north. As Luckey disappeared over the horizon, Sheppard tried to stumble to his feet, the wind knocked out of him. Before he could scramble away however, Roman shoved him back to the ground, and he gasped for air uselessly. Claudia staggered over, and Roman let her do the honors. Using her good right arm, Claudia brought down her blade as Sheppard screamed, cutting deep into his gut. The boy tried to crawl away, blood and guts dripping from the large gash in his stomach, but Claudia brought her blade down again, finishing him off.
Sheppard Nowles, District 10 Male; 8th, Killed by Claudia, Day 5
After Sheppard's cannon rang, Claudia groaned and staggered to the ground, gripping her dangling left arm in pain. Roman inspected it, and told her what she feared most; the bone was fractured in several places, even peeking out from beneath the skin in one place. Claudia began to cry quietly, wiping the tears from her face as she tried to maintain her stoic composure. She knew that this injury probably meant she would not be leaving the arena. However, she would not give up, and Roman helped her walk back to the Cornucopia.
When they returned, Bling was shocked to see Claudia's grievous injury, and gaped as the 2s told him about the 10 boy riding a horse right into them. Bling and Roman worked together to use the medical supplies in the Horn to bandage up Claudia's broken arm the best they could, and created a makeshift splint to hold her arm together. Claudia thanked them profusely, and promised she would stick on guard duty for the rest of the Games, making all three of them chuckle quietly. As Roman finishing bandaging up her wounds, he noticed that there was less gauze than before, but he didn't really think much of it. He didn't put together the pieces that Bling was smuggling some of it away from camp. After Claudia was all bandaged up, they went to sleep.
On the morning of Day 6, the storm clouds blanketed the arena sky in various shades of dark gray and black. They rumbled with thunder as rain began to pour heavily down from the heavens on the arena. The Careers woke up early, and Roman and Bling suited up to go hunting, leaving the healing Claudia to defend the Cornucopia. Pylene, Smokey, and Brandy were all safe in their barn, and the 9s had still yet to discover the hiding 8 girl. All three remained dry. Branden was the only one to face the brunt of the heavy storms on his own; shivering and cold, he hid in a cornfield, trying his best yet failing to keep dry.
Roman and Bling got bright yellow raincoats as sponsor gifts, and they slid them on before heading out of the Cornucopia and trekking off to the west. Within the hour, they arrived at the equipment barn where almost half of the tributes left in the Games were hiding. Inside, Smokey was helping Brandy finish the repairs on their chosen tractor, but they weren't quite there yet. Pylene spotted the Careers from a little window in the hayloft, and she immediately panicked. Taking a deep breath, she leaned over the edge of the hayloft and whispered quietly to the 9s that the Careers were coming.
The 9s both jumped, startled to see Pylene. Smokey drew out his scythe, but she begged him to leave her alone, repeating again that two Careers were about to come to the barn. Pylene then buried herself underneath the hay in the hayloft, quivering and trying to hold in tears. Smokey started to go to the ladder up to the hayloft to polish Pylene off, but Brandy punched him in the shoulder. She told him the 8 girl wouldn't have come out of hiding unless there was a real threat. Groaning, Smokey grabbed his scythe while Brandy picked up her sickle, and the two 9s braced themselves on either side of the front doors of the barn. Bling and Roman approached the barn quickly, weapons drawn, ready to take on whoever they discovered inside the building.
Bling kicked open the wide swinging doors, and they slammed into Brandy, who hadn't been far enough from the doors to not get hit. She cursed as her nose started to bleed, and she fell back as Smokey leaped into the entrance as planned. Bling wasn't expecting the attack, and Smokey was able to bury his scythe in the boy's abdomen. Bling screamed as Smokey stabbed him, and he jabbed his spear into the hulking 9 boy's shoulder.
Roman shoved his way into the barn, and almost decapitated Smokey with his sword while Bling staggered, trying to hold in his guts. Smokey looked for Brandy for backup, but his ally had fled out the back doors, realizing that the fight against both Careers would only end in her death as the weakest fighter. Brandy could be seen sprinting through the pounding rain, heading southward and disappearing into the cornfields.
Smokey howled in anger at being abandoned, but he wouldn't give up. He brought up his scythe to block Roman's next stab with his sword. Meanwhile, Bling was leaning against the door of the barn, trying to get to his feet. However, Smokey had dealt him a grievous wound to his abdomen, and his internal organs began to shut down. As Smokey and Roman sparred heartily, the 1 boy slipped away. His cannon shattered the silence and made Pylene squeak in the hayloft, but Roman and Smokey did not hear her as they were too focused on their fight.
Bling Miranti, District 1 Male; 7th, Killed by Smokey, Day 6
Smokey was doing admirably, blocking Roman's parries and stabs with his scythe as he backed up into the barn. However, as he was backing up, he tripped over a spare part from the tractor that he and Brandy had been trying to affix. He scrambled to his feet, but Roman was able to knock his scythe from his hands when he fell. Smokey picked up a metal pipe and tried to bring it down on Roman's head, but Roman knocked that out of his hands too. Realizing he couldn't beat the 2 boy, Smokey turned to escape, sprinting towards the open back doors like Brandy had minutes earlier. Roman wouldn't let him escape, however, and he ripped Bling's bloodied spear from his cold, still hands. While the spear wasn't Roman's primary weapon, he still knew how to throw one, and with one throw, the spearhead embedded itself in Smokey's back, making him collapse to the ground in the mud right outside of the barn.
Smokey tried to pull himself to his feet, unwilling to relent, but Roman would not let him escape after he had murdered his last healthy ally. He ripped the spear from Smokey's back, making the boy howl, and stabbed it into him again. Smokey squirmed, unable to escape Roman's blow as he brought out the spear once more and stabbed it harder this time. Soon the mud was slick with Smokey's blood, but the hulking District 9 boy would not slip away without leaving his mark on the 2 boy. With one last grand show of effort, Smokey picked up a stone and slammed it into Roman's knee. The boy yelled, staggering away, as Smokey gasped out his last few breaths and bled out in the pounding rain.
Smokey Matthews, District 9 Male; 6th, Killed by Roman, Day 6
Roman groaned painfully as Smokey's cannon fired, clutching his cracked kneecap. He could still walk, but barely. He gathered his sword and spear, and limped out of the barn, not inspecting the rest of it as he was too injured. Pylene was crying up in her hayloft, but she breathed a sigh of relief as she saw Roman stagger away and return towards the Cornucopia. She stayed huddled amidst the hay, eating the last of her crackers. She quietly willed away the gruesome scenes she had just witnessed as Bling and Smokey's bodies were removed from the barn by hovercraft.
Roman limped back to the Cornucopia, and when Claudia spotted him staggering back alone and with blood all over him, she sighed in relief that he had survived. She hugged him, showing a surprising amount of affection for a Career, but Roman understood; they were the last two Careers now, and if he wasn't still alive, Claudia probably would've been able to be overpowered by the 9s due to her broken arm. Claudia helped Roman with his injuries the best she could, and the two received a sponsor gift of hot tomato soup for the night, helping warm them during the cold, unrelenting rain.
Brandy kept heading south after abandoning Smokey. She felt guilty, knowing one of the two cannons was most likely Smokey's, and if they hadn't been, that he would not hesitate to kill her the next time they met. However, she knew it would've been too risky for her to stay there as she was the weakest fighter of the Careers and Smokey, and would've been taken out. She ran all the way to the southern lake, and she settled there, huddling among the reeds and steeling herself. She drank freely from the lake, replenishing her thirst, and ate some edible roots she recognized on the lake's shore. She planned to return to the equipment barn in the morning after she did some thinking, with a plan beginning to formulate itself in her mind.
Branden had gotten lucky to entirely avoid the conflict thus far in the Games; when he had woken up in the morning, sleeping in the open of the tomato patch, he had scurried into a nearby wheat field and had hunkered down for the rest of the day. Hearing two cannons however, Branden realized he was closer than ever to returning home to District 6, and he became excited, believing he had a chance to make it home if he kept hiding. He dreamed of winning the Games like Deana Mitchellson had in a similar arena four decades prior as he fell asleep in a soggy wheat field.
The next morning was a day of reckoning in the Games; not their final, but it was still a momentous occasion. Cyndala had been slowly building up the rain and clouds in the arena, turning it from a beautiful, summery farm to a dark, drenched one. And now, she unveiled the arena force that had been featured in her spoiler clip at the beginning of the Games, the twist all of the tributes still in the Games were deathly in fear of: the tornado.
It started in the northern corner of the arena, tearing through the wreckage of the burnt farmhouse. The rain was even worse than before, and Brandy was the first awake. She spotted the tornado far, far on the horizon, and began dashing desperately for the equipment barn, knowing it was the only place in the arena she knew of where she would stand a chance of surviving the arena event. She had been intending to head back there anyway, but the tornado gave her even more reason to do so. Pylene spotted it too and climbed down to the floor level of the barn, hunkering down on the dirt floor. She shook in tornado position with her hands cradling her head as the storm slowly approached. Meanwhile, the 2s also spotted the approaching tornado when they woke up, and they huddled all of their supplies in the back of the Cornucopia and then hunkered down within it, hoping to outlast the tornado there. Branden was still asleep as the tornado ravaged the northern stretches of the arena, blissfully unaware of the chaos approaching him.
Brandy reached the equipment barn in time, although the tornado was dangerously close to her area as it began to swing west a bit. She ripped open the doors, and found a cowering Pylene weakly holding her pitchfork out at her. Brandy immediately made peace, telling Pylene she didn't want to kill her and only needed a place to hide. She promised that she wanted to work together to take down the 2s and get to the end together. Pylene was worried and paranoid, but she just nodded soundlessly, and Brandy slammed and bolted the barn doors shut behind her. She then hunkered down next to Pylene in tornado position, and the two girls waited for the tornado to reach them, knowing that the Gamemakers would not spare them from hell.
The tornado did indeed come to the equipment barn first, and Pylene screamed as the winds battered the barn. The glass windows shattered, and the roof above them began to warp. Both girls shrieked as portions of the roof rippled and then popped, being pulled into the tornado. Rain began to pour into the barn in sheets through the rifts in the roof, and Pylene and Brandy clung to each other in fear. Debris from the storm, like leaves and sticks and stones, whirled through the open holes in the roof, and the building quivered and shook around them. However, the Gamemakers decided they had scared the two most promising Outliers enough, and let the tornado swirl away towards the Cornucopia. Pylene wept in relief, while Brandy kissed the ground, and then quickly began explaining a plan to Pylene for how to take down the 2s.
While Brandy and Pylene plotted, the tornado ripped across the vegetable and grain fields, heading towards the Cornucopia. Claudia and Roman braced against one another as they saw the twister eating across the fields from their hiding spot in the depths of the golden Horn. It swiftly passed through the central dirt patch where the Cornucopia sat; debris littered the clearing, and the Cornucopia shook as the strong winds whirled around it. Several clumps of wheat and sticks flew into the open mouth of the Horn, alongside half of a beam from the burnt farmhouse. The beam came out of nowhere, and it slammed into Claudia's right foot, further injuring the girl. She screamed as she pushed the beam off; her ankle was only bruised, but she would have trouble walking just like Roman. However, the two of them were relatively unscathed from the tornado with no serious injuries; it seemed so far that every tribute had escaped without major injuries.
This was because the tornado was heading right towards its ultimate destination. The Capitol and the Gamemakers were both extremely bored with the weak boy from 6, his lack of action, and his foolishly long naps. The boy groggily awoke in one of the southern wheat fields, rubbing his eyes as he felt the strong winds on his face. He began to scream as he saw the tornado tearing apart the nearby barley field, pulling clumps of barley and dirt into the air and flinging them down. One clump of dirt smacked into his face, making him stumble as he tried to stand. The weeping boy tried to run away, but the tornado quickly twisted towards him, and picked him up in its swirling embrace. Branden screamed over and over as the strong winds tossed him every which way, and suddenly he found himself tumbling towards the ground for dozens of feet up in the air as the twister spit him out. The boy pinwheeled in the air and hit the ground with a sickening crunch, his neck and several other bones breaking upon impact. His cannon fired moments later as the tornado twisted south and dissipated as it reached the end of the arena.
Branden Rickles, District 6 Male; 5th, Killed by tornado, Day 7
With only four tributes left in the arena, and the tornado having done its job, the dark, dreary clouds dissipated and the rain disappeared. Claudia and Roman set to work clearing the debris around the Cornucopia, limping about as they did their work. The two discussed their worries and their need to not be surprised by whichever two Outliers were left, as they knew they were not in their best shape due to their injuries. They both agreed they heavily hoped that Brandy had been the one to die in the tornado, as they both knew they could take Branden and Pylene in combat. They finished clearing the area around the Cornucopia of debris as dusk began to set in, and they agreed to set out to hunt in the morning and not attack one another until they were the last two left.
In the equipment barn, Brandy set to work with Pylene as her new assistant, hellbent on finishing repairs on the tractor she and Smokey had been working on before the Careers had attacked them. Pylene was amazed with the knowledge Brandy had about fixing the tractor, while Brandy was extremely focused on her work. As night fell over the arena, Brandy was able to wiggle the last piece of the mechanism into place. Grinning, Brandy high fived an impressed Pylene. As they were getting ready to sleep, Brandy noticed something in a corner of the barn underneath a tarp that she had neglected to notice earlier. Smiling, she whipped away the tarp to reveal an attachment for the tractors. The attachment was used to plow soil, but Brandy realized the blades could have another purpose. Excitement glittering in her eyes, she hauled the attachment over to her tractor, and began to dance as it connected to the front perfectly. She blessed the Gamemakers and the Capitol profusely before settling down to bed with a similarly excited Pylene; the two Outlier girls felt as if they stood a real chance now.
The next morning, Brandy awoke Pylene early, and she opened the doors of the barn. It was barely morning, with the sun barely peeking over the horizon and the arena stilled plunged in black. Pylene handed her night vision goggles from the Bloodbath to Brandy, who snapped them onto her head. The two girls climbed onto the tractor, with Brandy sitting at the front driving and Pylene hugging her around the middle and sitting behind her. Their sickle and pitchfork were tied to the back of the tractor with the rope Pylene had. The two girls smiled at each other as Brandy revved the engine and began to drive the tractors forward. The blades of the attachment ripped through the soil as they drove forward, straight towards the Cornucopia.
Claudia was drowsily on duty, watching the sun slowly glimmer over the horizon. She heard noises approaching the Cornucopia, however, and she roused Roman before limping out to the edge of the dirt circle, waiting for whatever was coming her way to appear. She squinted in the half-light of dawn, and immediately screamed as she saw Brandy's tractor ripping through the cornfield and tumbling towards her at its top speed.
Claudia turned and began to run away, smart enough to know that she could not fight the girls on the tractor with just her sword. However, her brusied ankle slowed her down, and the tractor steadily advanced on her. Roman was barely awake, but when he heard Claudia's screams, he perked up. He began to hobble off into the cornfield, not even trying to defend himself either. Brandy and Pylene couldn't help but smile as the once mighty Careers limped their way into the cornfield, rabidly trying to escape as the tractors closed in on them.
The machine quickly caught up to Claudia, while Roman still had a bit of a head start on the tractor. Claudia screamed as her right foot was caught in the whirring blades of the tractor, and it was over after that. She fell to the ground as her right foot was tenderized to a pulp, and soon the rest of her right leg and her left leg as well were pulled into the attachment's dull blades along with the dirt she was laying on. She screamed and screamed as the machine ate her up; Brandy grimaced and Pylene began to cry as the 2 girl's body was pulverized. By the time it was up to her chest, Claudia stopped struggling, and her cannon fired moments later. Brandy reversed the tractor and backed up, refusing to completely destroy Claudia's body, and sent the tractor at full speed towards Roman as Claudia's mangled, bloody corpse steamed.
Claudia Stitt, District 2 Female; 4th, Killed by Brandy, Day 8
Roman was deep in the cornfields by now, but Brandy would not give up her chase, and within minutes she was closing in on the 2 boy as well. Roman began to yell, trying to get himself to run faster, but his broken kneecap would not allow him to move faster. Soon, the tractor was closing in on the 2 boy, and as hard as Roman tried, soon his foot also got caught in the machine. He screeched as it was twisted and popped off of his ankle, and he prepared to be slaughtered just like Claudia.
Suddenly, the tractor stopped moving, and the attachment stopped whirring. Brandy, frustrated, pushed hard on the gas pedal, but the tractor would not move. She looked at the gauges, and realized the tractor was out of gas. Cursing, Brandy futilely attempted to start up the tractor again, but was once more unsuccessful. Roman realized this was his chance, and screaming, he hacked off his entangled right foot with his sword, and then began to crawl away into the corn as Brandy gave up trying to restart the tractor.
Pylene asked Brandy what was wrong, but instead of giving the 8 girl a response, Brandy shoved her hard off of the tractor. Pylene screamed as she hit the ground hard, and before she could pick herself up, Brandy was off the tractor too, having pulled her sickle free from where Pylene had tied it up alongside her pitchfork. Pylene tried to scramble away, but Brandy kicked her in the ribs, and told her she was sorry and she'd make it quick. Pylene just wept as Brandy buried her sickle in Pylene's neck twice, severing her spinal cord and killing her as quickly as she could.
Pylene Barrett, District 8 Female; 3rd, Killed by Brandy, Day 8
Biting her lip, Brandy backed up from Pylene's body after her cannon rang. She knew Roman was severely injured, and she didn't want to risk Pylene surprising her and killing her after they hunted him down. The hunter now became the hunted as Roman drew in ragged breaths and crawled through the cornfield, a trail of blood in his wake. Brandy stalked after him slowly, making sure he was not going to jump out and surprise him, intent on making sure she would exit the arena as the Victor.
The sun fully began to cross the horizon, the day beginning in earnest, and Brandy ripped her night vision goggles off as she spotted Roman about fifteen feet away in the corn. The 2 boy panicked upon seeing Brandy, and tried to pull himself to his feet, but his profusely bleeding right stump of a leg would not allow him to stand. Crying soundlessly, the boy managed to pull himself into a kneeling position, and attempted to face the healthy 9 girl with his sword while she towered over him, her bloody sickle gleaming in the morning light.
Roman put up an admirable fight, barely managing to block Brandy's first stabs. However, he was quickly weakening and losing focus due to the amount of blood pumping out of his right leg. He swayed and dropped his sword as he suddenly became dizzy from the blood loss. He weakly held his hands over his head in an attempt to stop Brandy, but it was useless. The 9 girl gritted her teeth as she kicked away his sword and then slashed open his stomach with her sickle. The boy moaned and screamed as she stabbed and stabbed, knowing he had killed Smokey. She drew out his death for a couple of minutes until the 2 boy's body was a bloody mess, and then she polished him off, jabbing her sickle into his throat and finishing him with one flick of her wrist.
Roman Cosentino, District 2 Male; 2nd, Killed by Brandy, Day 8
"Brandy Hooper, you are the Victor of the Fifty Third Hunger Games!" Claudius and Caesar cheered into the arena as the trumpets played victoriously throughout the arena. Brandy just dropped her bloody sickle and bit her lip as she looked up into the sky for the hovercraft, trying to ignore Roman's tattered corpse only paces from her.
Aftermath
District 9 was shocked to have a 4th Victor so soon after Enzo's Victory only 5 years prior, but they were overjoyed to have two young Victors to help out their tributes. They were proud of Brandy for her strength and ingenuity, and the way she polished off the other 3 tributes in the Final 4 was quite a way to exit the Games. Brandy was a fun, rough-and-tumble type of Victor. She had a boisterous, no-bullshit personality, and after her Games her filter was removed even more. She was haunted heavily by her Games, especially by her three finale kills and abandoning Smokey to the Careers. She would become an alcoholic, joining the alcoholic ring of Victors from the middle of the first century, and she would become especially close with Chaff and Haymitch, and bragged that she could outdrink them both. While she was popular with many of her friends, many of the Careers and more meek Outer District Victors were not big fans of her despite respecting her victory. Brandy tried admirably with her tributes, but she often was not given very good tributes and struggled to be a responsible Mentor due to her alcoholism.
Brandy would die at age 68, dying from unspecified causes around the 103rd Hunger Games. She would marry a rich merchant from District 9, and they would have a single daughter together. Her husband would pass away before she did.
The payouts on her Victory were decent, as 4% bet on her.
Her Victory Tour was above average, although nothing phenomenal. She had a fiery, talkative personality and was able to sell her Capitol-approved message to the Districts, who loved how she had finished the Games.

A/N: Wow that turned out way longer than I expected! I thought it would be a quicker and shorter chapter after the 12 death Bloodbath, but I just really vibed with this arena and this Victor so I went all out with the detail and it ended up being almost 11k lol.
What did y'all think? I love Brandy as a Victor and I hope you liked how she won. She's the 9F from Catching Fire, so I hope I did her justice.
I just am in love with this story again so I churned out this chapter, but I'm going to take a break to focus on BMO before I return to this story again. However, the 50s are a very exciting era so I hope the next chapters are going to be exciting :) Let me know if there's anything I should change! I love to hear your criticisms and compliments
Until Next Time,
Tracee
