Chapter 3.
Minutes earlier…
" Ok-ok-deep breaths." Amity said to herself, pacing back and forth in the woods before the Owl House. " You've got this. It's just Luz, you know her. Just remember Willow's advice and don't overthink it." Amity walked up to the house and took in one last deep breath.
" Someone looks niiiccceee. Hoot!" Hooty commented.
" Open the door before I kill you," Amity commanded.
Hooty complied and opened the door, Amity quickly did a last check of her outfit before crossing her hands and waiting for her date to walk outside. She had been wondering what Luz would choose to wear but never could have imagined something so oddly beautiful. Then again it was Luz she was talking about.
" You look nice," Amity said, flustered.
" So do you." Luz replied. " I got you something."
Luz handed Amity a dark purple flower hair clip.
" I know it's not much but-"
" -I love it!" Amity interjected. " Thank you."
" So, you ready to go?" Luz asked.
" Only if you are human." She smirked.
The two took each other's hands and walked towards the town, Eda and King looked on as they left.
" So, where should we go first?" Luz asked.
" I thought we'd start in town." Amity responded. " There's a few places that I know you'll love, book shops, places that sell human things. I can show you where I get my Azura books from."
" I've been meaning to ask, how did you get those here?"
" We have these explorers called Vale Piercers." She elaborated. " They have secret portals to the human world and use them to bring back stuff. You can even put in a special order for a specific item, but you can never go with them into the portal."
" Why not?"
" It's not exactly…legal. And to purchase an item from such a vendor is…also illegal."
" Amity Blight breaking the law, who would have thought." Luz joked.
" Be quiet." She smirked.
" Hay where are we going?" Luz asked. " This isn't the way to town that I know of."
" I thought we could do in style. Tell me, have you ever ridden a broom before?"
" Yes and I love it!" Luz exclaimed.
" Well in that case." Amity used her magic to summon her broomstick and showed it off to her date.
Luz stared in awe at the simple yet amazing sight.
" I didn't know you could fly one of these." Said Luz.
" Of course I can!" Amity interjected, trying not to panic. " it's simple, yep, easy, no problem for a witch of my ability."
What Luz didn't yet know was that Amity has never ridden a broomstick before last night and was just trying to impress her.
" Ok just stay calm." Amity thought to herself. " Remember what your brother and sister said to you." She remembered that they told her to not be afraid to "give it all she had." " You ready back there?" She asked Luz.
" Yep." Luz responded, wrapping her arms around Amity's stomach.
As if she wasn't stressed enough already, the feel of Luz hugging her pushed Amity further into panic mode, causing her to ride off on the broomstick at full power. The two hung on the deer life as they rocketed straight up into the air screaming as they went.
" I thought You said you could fly one of these!" Luz yelled, still hanging onto Amity.
" I lied!" Amity confessed.
" What?! Why?!"
" I wanted to impress you!"
" Well it worked up until this part!"
They two kept climbing into the sky, moving in all directions until they headed sleight to the ground like a falling star.
" Amity you've got to take control of this thing!" Luz cried out.
" I'm tyring!" Amity responded. " Going to kill those two!" She thought to herself.
As they neared the ground, Amity pulled up as hard as she could leveling out the broom. She then willed it to stop, turning to its side and riding the skid mark like performance till it halted altogether. Having finally stopped, Amity let out a sigh of relief as Luz comedically went limp and collapsed onto the ground.
" You ok?" Asked Amity.
Luz gave her a thumbs up.
" I still don't know what that means."
" It means I'm fine." Luz smiled as she got up off the ground.
" Sorry about that." Amity apologized. " I just wanted to impress you."
" Amity, you don't need to impress me." She explained, taking Amity's hand in hers. " Now exactly where are we?"
" I think we're close to town." Amity reckoned. " So at least it wasn't a total loss."
" Definitely one of the more heart-pounding near-death experiences I've had so far." Luz joked as they went on their way.
As they walked further into the forest towards the town, the two began to speak to one another about their lives, in an effort to get to know one another better. Luz came up with a game to try and help with certain topics.
" Ok your turn." She said. " What is your best childhood memory?"
" Easy." Said Amity. " The day my Father taught me my first spell."
" What was it? Fire, abomination, ice?"
" It was actually plant magic."
" Really?!"
" Yeah. I watched him use his power to move some roots out of our way and I tried to do the same thing. It didn't work at first though. I remember concentrating so hard I got a headache. He said my face turned bright red."
" Hehe."
" Later on he taught me told about the covens and asked me which one I'd like to join. At first, I considered plant, even illusion…But then my mother got involved." Luz could hear the change of tone in Amity's voice as she continued. " When she learned that from my father that I had taken an interest in magic she signed me up for private lessons, started to push me harder, then she told me I had to stop hanging out with Willow."
" That must have been hard." Luz sympathized.
" It was. I lost myself for a long time. I had this mindset of, if I just do what they say for long enough I'll eventually get to choose my own path again. But I was an idiot think that."
" You weren't."
" No, I was! I wasted my life trying to be better than everyone else. All because my parents-my mother wanted me to be the best. To uphold my family's name, but…"
" But what good is a name compared to the people it belongs to?"
Amity turned to Luz and smiled softly at her. She was glad she was here. In a moment of confidence, she made another move on Luz, interlocking her arm with hers and leaning on her shoulder as they walked along. Luz blushed and said.
" Wow. I didn't know my advice was that good."
Amity laughed softly as they entered the town. As they walked along, Luz noticed the people around her, they were just going about their day to day lives like she and Amity didn't exist. This however was not the reaction she was expecting.
" Is something wrong?" Asked Amity, noticing Luz's wandering eyes.
" It's just…I wasn't expecting this."
" What?"
" People to be ok with us-being like this."
" I don't follow." Amity said confused.
" In my world. Two people of the same gender being in love can be…controversial in certain places. You can be subjected to a lot of hate for it."
Amity was surprised by this. She knew that Luz's world had different rules and customs but never thought about relationships.
" Have you ever been…subjected to hate?" She asked.
Luz hesitated to answer at first but finally spoke. "…Yes. I've been called things, all of them insults, all of them not nice."
Amity noticed that Luz was glitching her fist against her outfit like she did some time ago.
" In my world, I am what's known as Bisexual. A name for someone who loves more than one gender. I told some people I thought were my friends and they just teased me for it…some of them even…went further than name-calling."
" Did she get beat up for something so trivial?" Amity thought to herself.
" I eventually got so scared about it I didn't tell anyone else…it just didn't seem worth it."
" But your so…open about your other interests. Why not about this?"
" Because being a nerd is common in one sense. But being queer is common in a completely different sense. It's complicated."
Amity saw how much this was bothering Luz. She didn't know what to say about it, the people here didn't care about something like this. Her parents maybe, but only because Luz was a human, not because she was a girl.
" Luz." She said, holding onto her arm even tighter. " I'm sorry you were picked on like that. But on the isles, things are different. You can be who you want here, you can love who you want, people don't care." Amity stopped and faced Luz, taking bot her hands in hers as she didn't so. " I don't care."
Luz looked Amity in the eyes as she smiled at her. She felt safe with her like she could be herself to a different extent. Luz just smiled ad kissed her there and then. The moment felt like it would last forever…but it didn't.
" Wow. I knew you went soft Amity, but I never expected this would be the reason why."
Amity broke off her kiss with Luz and rolled her eyes as she recognised the voice who taunted her.
" Ugh. Get lost Bosha. I'm in the middle of something here."
" I can see that." She condescended. " I always knew you'd that human had an effect on you, but I never thought this would be the extent of it."
" The human has a name," Luz said annoyingly.
" I don't care. And if Amity had any common sense left she wouldn't be hanging out with someone like you. A magicless freak of a girl." Bosha taunted.
Luz didn't pay any mind to her comments, she had heard worse than that before. " Amity let's go…Amity?" Luz looked on in confusion as Amity walked over to Bosha, her fists clenched shut as tight as they would go. Luz couldn't see it, but Amity's face was red with anger. As she came inches from the smirking face of her rival, Amity spoke.
" Apologize." She demanded.
" What?" Asked Bosha, breaking her smirk.
" I want you to apologize to Luz."
" Amity it's ok." Luz tried to reason.
" No, it's not! Now say you're sorry Bosha.
" Or what?" Bosha taunted. " You forget Amity. I know you. And you're all talk."
"…Is that right?" She smirked.
Before Bosha could say anything else, Amity punched her right on the nose! Sending her back several steps and causing her to fall onto the floor. Everyone was shocked by what Amity had just done, Bosha most of all.
" Oh, that is it!" Bosha said, wiping the blood from her nose.
Knowing what was about to unfold, Amity quickly summoned her abomination, while Bosha ignited her fists with her fire magic. The two girls were ready for a witch's duel!
" This can not end well," Luz said to herself.
