The Sixty First Annual Hunger Games

Introduction

After a successful first Games as Head Gamemaker, Rufana Halispell claimed the position yet again, determined to run another stunning Games to further her forty-three year legacy as a gifted Gamemaker. Although the woman was elderly and not like other Capitolites of the time, as she did not enjoy the parties and excesses of her countrymen, she was still well-liked on a professional basis for her arenas. Many people were enamored with her tough exterior and her preoccupation with dystopian, rotted arenas. She also had no interest in politics and kept largely to herself, which made her a non-threat. This was what allowed President Coriolanus Snow to favor Rufana highly and keep her in her post. He was pleased with her work, and he saw her as a talented Head Gamemaker who would not get in his way while he was running the country. He remained in control of Panem yet again; there were some minor shortages of food in some of the urban Districts due to missed quotas from the agrarian Districts. However, the small rebellions were easily put down, and President Snow had no worries about a major uprising occuring anytime soon. Caesar Flickerman and Claudius Templesmith returned as the announcers for the Hunger Games, and they spent much of their Pre-Games show wondering how Rufana would implement her dystopian leanings into the next arena. The Careers this year were a pretty strong group, half scoring 10s and the other half 9s. The female from 1 was wildly popular; Gleam was the younger sister of Glisten Raybould from the 57th Game, part of the notable Raybould dynasty. While Glisten had been extremely flirty, Gleam was even flirtier and even more talented with a bow, exciting much of the audience. Her District partner, Burberry, was less impressive, but he appealed to the Capitol with his keen fashion sense. He longed to be a fashion designer, and he was going into the Games so he would have the exposure to become a famous designer. He also had a good enough talent with a spear to qualify him for volunteering beyond his career goals. The pair from 2 were strong as always. The girl, Ambrosia, was the front-runner. She was beautiful with honey-blonde hair and a muscular yet curvy physique. She was naturally charming while also being a gifted leader and sword fighter. Her District partner, Rex, was also impressive; he was extremely muscular, and he was gifted with a mace. He was not very talkative, speaking in short sentences but intriguing the Capitol with his handsomeness. District 4 managed to produce two volunteers this year as well. The girl, Ibiza, had midnight-black hair and the slim, muscular build of a gifted swimmer. She was very attractive and graceful, although a bit shy to the audience, and she had a great talent with a trident like many people from her District. Her District partner, Angelo, was younger than the other Careers at 17, but he still was dashing and extremely comedic, entrancing much of the audience with his bad boy attitude and silly jokes. He preferred to fight with a machete or daggers. The Outliers this year were a sorely disappointing bunch, with only one tribute scoring above a 6. This tribute was Piston from District 6; raised in the street gangs that dominated the District's bulging black market for morphling and other drugs, he became extremely muscular and talented in hand-to-hand combat. Thus, he was able to score an 8, which was often a score reserved for Careers, making him by far the front-runner to win out of the Outliers. There was also another volunteer besides the Careers: Spinetta from 8 volunteered to save her younger sister from going into the Games. However, she was not very remarkable before the Games, only scoring a 5 and seeming very nervous before the Games began. Another notable tribute was Ines from 11; despite scoring a 6, Ines was extremely comedic, and she also had the distinction of missing her entire right arm, making her a memorable tribute. Besides these three Outliers, none of the others seemed to make much of an impression, and there were no other volunteers besides the Careers and Spinetta. Here are the tributes:

District 1: Gleam Raybould, 18 (10) 5-1 and Burberry Hamlin, 18 (9) 8-1

District 2: Ambrosia Heath, 18 (10) 4-1 and Rex Darien, 18 (10) 5-1

District 3: Pixie Jallou, 16 (6) 25-1 and Udwin Keniye, 15 (6) 23-1

District 4: Ibiza Tran, 18 (9) 7-1 and Angelo Reyes, 17 (9) 9-1

District 5: Dinah Grae, 15 (4) 46-1 and Kenney Phillips, 17 (6) 22-1

District 6: Eileen Morris, 18 (4) 43-1 and Piston Schwann, 18 (8) 12-1

District 7: Perrie Vincel, 13 (4) 48-1 and Abraham Collier, 16 (5) 34-1

District 8: Spinetta Creve, 18 (5) 34-1 and Thessi DeBleu, 17 (3) 54-1

District 9: Lola Devens, 17 (5) 38-1 and Quincey Weiss, 15 (4) 40-1

District 10: Ines Hidalgo, 18 (6) 21-1 and Poultry Secourt, 16 (5) 31-1

District 11: Lorraina Kempt, 17 (5) 32-1 and Squash Waller, 13 (4) 45-1

District 12: Patty Reinerger, 15 (4) 49-1 and Keene Duston, 18 (5) 30-1

HGBA Odds: 18% on Ambrosia, 17% on Gleam, 15% on Rex, 13% on Ibiza, 11% on Angelo, 10% on Burberry, 4% on Piston, 1% or less on Pixie, Udwin, Dinah, Kenney, Eileen, Perry, Abraham, Spinetta, Thessi, Lola, Quincey, Ines, Poultry, Lorraina, Squash, Patty, and Keene.

The Games

The 24 tributes rose up on their pedestals, all dressed in war uniforms from the Dark Days. Half of the tributes, all Outliers, were dressed in the scraggly light blue uniforms that many of the rebels had worn, while the Careers and six more Outliers wore the white Peacekeeping suits without the helmet or gun that the Capitol's defenders had donned to protect their city. The arena around them was the remnants of the battle on the border of District Nine, best described as an old war-zone. The entire area was extremely bombed out, made of hard packed dirt where nothing could grow. The land was just smooth, packed dirt with some piles of rubble from bombed out buildings or destroyed warcraft dotting the area. Ringing the arena on the northern and southern sides, a system of trenches could be found. They had been built to replicate the trenches where Peacekeepers and rebels had fought against each other on the outskirts of District Nine for years till the very end of the Dark Days, and they were a complicated maze of trenches that stored many supplies and also horrors. Zombified soldier mutts roamed these corridors in the dirt, but they also presented places to hide that the rest of the wide open arena did not house. To the west, a giant polluted lake sat, the water too foul to drink or for anything to live in, while to the east there was the rubble of an abandoned farming village that provided some cover. Most of the center of the arena was made of wide open dirt, though, and the Cornucopia sat at the very center here. The Cornucopia was burgeoning with all types of supplies, filled to the brim with food, water, weaponry, and all matters of other things. Rufana had known her previous Bloodbath had been a bit of a letdown, and she knew with this desolate seeming arena she could lure more tributes in and cause a bigger Bloodbath. Because of the fact that the tributes only saw packed dirt around them and because the pack was stronger this year, half of the tributes would perish in the opening minutes of the Games, 11 of them being killed after the gong.

As the tributes were waiting on their platforms, the tiny girl from 7 could be seen shaking in fright. Perrie was only thirteen, and she was terrified, knowing she would most likely be dead within the next half hour. As she shook, suddenly her sweaty palms let her token slip out of them. The small wooden ball had been a gift from her father that had died when she was young, and she had been bringing it into the arena to remind herself of him. However, the smooth wooden ball accidentally slipped right from Perrie's hands as she shook in fear, and it hit the ground and activated the mines about halfway through the countdown. The 7 girl did not even have time to scream as her pedestal suddenly blew up, turning her instantly into a shower of blood and guts that rained down on the other tributes as the countdown continued to tick away.

Perrie Vincel, District 7 Female; 24th, Blown up by pedestal, Bloodbath

Many of the tributes were terrified after Perrie was blown up, screaming or crying. Angelo from 4 and Abraham from 7 were on her sides; Angelo seemed disgusted but unbothered by the blood coating him, while Abraham started to cry a little bit in terror. Nearby, Dinah from 5 got incredibly dizzy at the sight of Perrie blowing up and almost fell off of her pedestal. Thankfully, she was able to keep upright long enough for the countdown to finish. Thus, as the final numbers ticked away, several tributes were still screaming over Perrie's explosion as the Games neared their beginning.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Once the gong rang, only 2 tributes immediately ran away since the arena seemed so desolate; these were Udwin, the boy from 3, and Patty, the girl from 12. As these two rushed away from the Bloodbath, the other twenty-one remaining tributes ran in for the supplies ravenously. The Careers were the fastest runners this year, none of the Outliers being able to keep pace with them, and they were able to reach the Cornucopia that was bursting at the seams with weaponry before everyone else. They were able to find their weapons of choice easily. Gleam picked up her bow and arrows at the back of the Horn. Meanwhile, Burberry found a brace of spears, Ambrosia found a broadsword, Rex found a mace, Ibiza found a trident, and Angelo found a machete. As the Careers scooped up their weapons, the Outliers scrambled for supplies desperately as well, and soon the slaughter began in earnest.

Angelo's machete had been propped up against a crate full of water bottles closer to the pedestals than the other weapons, so he was able to pick it up before the rest of the Careers got to their weapons of choice. Angelo quickly darted towards a boy that had been near his own pedestal. The little boy from 11, Squash, was screeching wildly as he ran quickly through the Cornucopia field. He was overtaken by panic and terror, his mind blank from the fear that had been put into him by seeing Perrie blown up moments earlier. He ran right by Angelo in his mindless terror, and the 4 boy easily cut him down with two strokes of his machete. The 11 boy could barely gurgle before the life left his eyes as he collapsed to the ground in a bloody heap.

Squash Waller, District 11 Male; 23rd, Killed by Angelo, Bloodbath

Rex was eager to go to town on the tributes around him with his mace; while he was not a man of many words, he had an inclination towards violence, and he was excited to finally test his hand at murdering now that he was in the arena. He rushed towards where a girl was rifling through one of the crates stacked in the Cornucopia desperately. She did not even see him coming, and she did not even have time to look up before Rex's mace was burying itself in her skull. Rex smashed his weapon into Lola's skull three times in a row until it was such a pulpy, bloody mess that he was sure the job was done.

Lola Devens, District 9 Female; 22nd, Killed by Rex, Bloodbath

Ambrosia was also eager to hunt down tributes, knowing as the pack leader that she had to make a formidable showing in the opening minutes to reaffirm her control over the alliance. Thus, she made towards one of the stronger Outliers, the lanky yet clever boy from 5, Kenney. Ambrosia knew Kenney had the possibility to have a knack for traps like the other 5 tributes before him, and she was hellbent on not seeing him escape the Bloodbath. As Kenney was running towards the Horn towards where a pack bursting with wires and twine was sitting, Ambrosia loped towards him and intercepted him. Kenney tried to dodge her blows, but he had no weapon, and Ambrosia had superior fighting skills. The 2 girl was easily able to bury her blade in Kenney's chest after several moments, taking out the smart 5 boy and ensuring that another tribute from 5 would not devastate the Career pack.

Kenney Phillips, District 5 Male; 21st, Killed by Ambrosia, Bloodbath

On the other side of the Cornucopia field, Ibiza could be seen sprinting out of the Horn with her trident in her grasp. Despite seeming a bit quieter and shier during the Pre-Games, Ibiza showed more rage and malice than expected from her as she rushed towards where a nearby boy was stuffing packets of jerky and dried fruit into an empty pack. Keene from 12 shouted and tried to hit Ibiza with his half-full pack, but Ibiza dodged the blow and jabbed her trident upwards into the boy's chest. Keene was shocked to see the prongs of her weapon buried so easily in his chest, and he just made a weak sound as the 4 girl pulled her weapon free and he staggered to the ground. Another blow to the chest from Ibiza's trident, and the 12 boy was still.

Keene Duston, District 12 Male; 20th, Killed by Ibiza, Bloodbath

Burberry had found his brace of spears, and he was looking to prove himself as an admirable fighter, as he knew he had a softer image back in the Capitol due to his fashionista persona. He did not want to be seen as a weaker fighter just because he had an interest in fashion design, and thus he rushed towards the strongest Outlier target in the Games: Piston from 6. The boy had two packs over his bulging shoulders and was stooping to pick up a dagger when Burberry attacked him, jabbing one of his spears across the 6 boy's back. Piston roared in anger, quickly turning to Burberry and shoving him hard. Piston had a half foot in height and much more muscle mass than the slim Burberry. The 1 boy desperately tried to get to his feet, but Piston would not let him go, landing on top of the struggling 1 boy before slamming his dagger into Burberry's throat and slicing down with it so that his entire throat was slit open. Burberry couldn't make a sound with the grievous neck wound leaking blood at a rapid pace. He swiftly bled out as Piston stumbled to his feet and kicked the 1 boy in the head for extra measure to make sure he was dead.

Burberry Hamlin, District 1 Male; 19th, Killed by Piston, Bloodbath

As Piston stood up from murdering Burberry, nearer to the Horn, Rex could be seen attacking his next target with vigor, unaware that one of his allies had been felled. Spinetta, the girl from District 8 who had volunteered to save her younger sister, screamed in agony as Rex shoved her up against the side of the Cornucopia forcefully before planting his mace's spiked head in her chest. Spinetta screamed weakly, clawing and kicking at Rex, but it did nothing but make the 2 boy chuckle darkly. He slammed his mace into her chest again, and the martyr sister from 8 was dead.

Spinetta Creve, District 8 Female; 18th, Killed by Rex, Bloodbath

As Piston from 6 was beginning to lope away from Burberry's body with the supplies he had pillaged, he heard a wickedly pained scream from behind him and then felt the sharp pain of an arrow driving itself into the back of his skull. Piston stumbled to the ground, his eyes wide open at the sudden wound, as Gleam rushed towards him. While she and Burberry had not been best friends or lovers, they had still grown close after being chosen as volunteers for the Games, and Gleam was furious to see her District desecrated by being killed by a gang member from District 6. She loosed another arrow into the bleeding back of Piston's skull, right below the other one she had shot, and the 6 boy heaved his last breaths as Gleam gave another pained scream before looking for more victims.

Piston Schwann, District 6 Male; 17th, Killed by Gleam, Bloodbath

At the tail end of the Horn, Pixie from District 3 could be seen running desperately away from the Bloodbath with a backpack brimming with wires, the exact one Kenney from 5 had been going for when he had been killed by Ambrosia. Angelo spotted her trying to make away with the bounty of supplies, and he recognized the cunning girl from 3 as a threat with such tools to make traps in the arena. He sprinted after her, easily overtaking her due to her short stature and the malnutrition she had suffered from her whole life in the slums of 3. Pixie begged as Angelo pushed her to the ground, but the 4 boy did not listen to her pleas as he used his machete to chop roughly into her neck twice until she was fully beheaded and surely dead.

Pixie Jallou, District 3 Female; 16th, Killed by Angelo, Bloodbath

At the mouth of the Horn, Ambrosia could be seen standing over Eileen from 6 with a wicked grin on her face, slicing again and again into the squirming girl with her sword. Eileen was not a morphling addict like many from her District, but she was severely overworked from the factories and was rail thin. She could do nothing as Ambrosia sliced into her again and again with her sword besides cry and squirm around on the dusty dirt ground. After about a minute of such torture, the various gashes Ambrosia had inflicted on the girl were enough to make her pass away with one last scream of pain.

Eileen Morris, District 6 Female; 15th, Killed by Ambrosia, Bloodbath

After avenging Burberry's death by killing Piston, Gleam had spotted Dinah from 5 still huddled on her pedestal, completely in shellshock and extremely nauseous after seeing Perrie get blown up after dropping her token during the countdown. The terrified 5 girl had completely shut down in her fear, forgetting that she was in the middle of a death match, and it was much too easy for Gleam to lope towards her and release an arrow at her. This arrow smacked into Dinah's right shoulder, awakening her from her terrified trance. Dinah tried to confusedly scurry away, but Gleam fired two more arrows at her, both of these burying themselves in her gut. Dinah gurgled as blood began to flow out of her mouth, and a fourth arrow to the chest officially killed her as she slumped against the pedestal where she had been huddling in horror during the entire Bloodbath.

Dinah Grae, District 5 Female; 14th, Killed by Gleam, Bloodbath

The Cornucopia field seemed to be still after that, and all of the Careers began to search the area for any stragglers as the Outliers that had escaped with supplies rushed off in the distance. As the Careers were searching the open field, Rex heard muffled weeping inside one of the crates near the mouth of the Horn. He kicked it open, watching as the top of the crate popped off and the boy from 8, Thessi, tumbled out onto the hard packed dirt ground. Thessi was a merchant's son in 8, and he was corpulent and very pitiful. He was weeping, the tears flowing hard down his ruddy cheeks as he begged Rex to spare him and let him run away. Rex just chuckled at the boy's pleas before slamming his mace into Thessi's skull, watching as it burst like a ripened watermelon. Thessi's corpse collapsed to the ground with a thud as Rex pulled his mace free, the single powerful blow enough to make the final kill of the Bloodbath.

Thessi DeBleu, District 8 Male; 13th, Killed by Rex, Bloodbath

Once Thessi had been polished off, the Careers continued to search the area around the Cornucopia. They discovered nothing but still, bloodied corpses as they concluded their search. The pack was in high spirits after the Bloodbath. Gleam was still grieving the loss of her friend Burberry, and the entire pack was irritated to have lost a member in the opening minutes as they had been hoping to remain intact throughout the first day. However, the tributes had been polished down to half their number, and the Careers already seemed to make up almost half of the remaining tributes on the very first afternoon. Excited about this, the Careers began to clean up the Cornucopia field, dragging the corpses beyond the ring of pedestals so that they could be retrieved easily. Then they began to organize their supplies, eager to discover that they had a bounty of supplies, many more than in most years. As they organized, even Ibiza shook off her shyness and Gleam got over her grief for Burberry, the five Careers all joining in on joking as they worked. They speculated about what the arena was going to be like, knowing that it could not just be dirt as far as the eye could see. They decided to see if the arena transformed overnight and decided not to go hunting on the first night, knowing they had made an impressive enough Bloodbath to warrant a night of rest and observation before beginning their hunting.

As the Careers joked around and settled around the fire they built at the Cornucopia to keep themselves warm, the rest of the tributes spread throughout the war-zone arena in search of places to hide from them. Udwin from 3 had fled the Bloodbath immediately without any supplies, running northward the moment that gong had rang. He discovered the network of trenches soon after the twelve cannons signaling the end of the Bloodbath rang throughout the arena, and he eagerly lowered himself into them. The northern trenches were those of the rebels, and they were much shabbier. He spent much of the evening walking through them before finding a small offshoot of the trenches where some cots were stacked. Udwin settled here, planning to search for food and water in the morning. Abraham from 7 had made it away from the Bloodbath with a pack stuffed with water bottles as well as a dagger to defend himself with. Abraham was shaken by how his District partner Perrie had been blown up by her dropped token, and he cried much of the day about it. He hiked south, finding the southern trenches within a couple hours. He was pleased with how clean and orderly they seemed, sliding into them and wandering for a while before he found a pile of barrels piled in one of the corridors. He ended up sleeping curled up inside one of the barrels, putting the one he slept in behind the pile of others in hopes it would disguise him. Quincey from 9 had managed to get a sickle as well as several packs of beef jerky from the Bloodbath, and he hiked westwards after escaping from the Bloodbath. He reached the edges of the polluted lake as the sun began to set, and he quickly realized that it was not a safe place to rest as the water gained a greenish hue and he saw no life in or around it. Thus, he trekked back about a half mile to where a small stone shack had been blown to bits. Still, two of the walls stood that were between Quincey and the center of the arena. Feeling that these walls would hide him from the Careers' gaze, he curled up between them to sleep for the night. Ines from 10 and her ally Lorraina from 11 had both escaped from the Bloodbath with supplies; Ines had grabbed two spears, one for each of them, while Lorraina had gotten a pack of water and a pack of food. The two girls hiked northward, entering the more complex yet less stable series of trenches that had belonged to the rebels. The two girls crawled into them and wandered all night. They soon heard frightening noises, the dry croaking sounds of the zombified soldier mutts, and they quickly sped the other way. Ines kept her humor up in the gloomy arena, while Lorraina seemed to be a sweet optimist. Their sunny personalities helped them feel safe in the murky, frightening trenches. They ultimately settled at the very end of one of the trenches near the very edge of the arena to sleep. Poultry from 10 had gotten a pack full of food, water, and twine from the Bloodbath, and he had fled south after grabbing it. He was confused about the twine until he reached the trenches, realizing it could be a way to retrace his steps like from the old tale of the Minotaur and Labyrinth. Thus, Poultry found a sleeping space and a room full of rations before nightfall, and he laid his twine between the two rooms so he knew how to get between them. Patty from 12 had fled the Bloodbath without grabbing any supplies, and she had run to the east after the Games began. The girl was rather level-headed, having avoided the Bloodbath out of belief she would be able to sustain herself off of the arena. She found the remains of the bombed-out farming village by dusk, and she settled into one of the stone huts that was still in pretty good shape with only one of the walls caved in. Inside, she found some woolly blankets as well as some jugs of spiced wine. She drank the wine to keep herself warm and give herself entertainment, deciding to explore the village for more supplies once the sun came back up the next morning.

When the sun rose over the arena to mark Day 2, the Careers woke up and debated which way they should go hunting. They ultimately decided to go hunting in the western quadrant of the arena, as they had no idea what laid over the horizon, and thus picking any direction to hunt in would be a wild guess. Ibiza volunteered to guard the Cornucopia, and no one objected, as the other Careers all saw her as meeker and less energetic than them. Only Angelo felt close to her out of District loyalty, but he wanted to do his best to fit in with the pack. Thus, the other four Careers suited up with their armor and weaponry, leaving Ibiza to guard the Cornucopia. Ibiza did not seem bothered that her allies found her to be quieter or weaker however, talking to herself about strategy and about how being underestimated and avoiding the dangers of hunting every day would benefit her in the long run. Once they reached the end-game once more tributes were dead, she reasoned she would be in better shape. The Capitol was a little surprised to see such reasoning from the quieter girl, but most of their focus was elsewhere for the day.

Udwin explored the northern trenches all day, wandering from the part of the trench packed with creaking old cots. He was unable to find any food besides a hunk of moldy cheese he picked the mold off of, but he did find a full drum of fresh water that he drank from periodically throughout the day. The drum of water was in a secluded corner of the trenches, and Udwin carried one of the cots over to the drum so that he would not have to travel between his resting place and his water source. Abraham was too scared to explore the arena much, fearing what would happen to him if he left his barrels, Perrie's explosion never leaving his mind. He only got out to relieve himself and stretch his sore limbs, spending most of his time curled up in the tight wooden barrel so that no one would discover him. Ines and Lorraina spent much of the day exploring the northern trenches like Udwin, although they never crossed paths with the boy from 3. They were well supplied, so they only searched through the trenches to see what their surroundings were like. They were shocked when they turned a corner and found a singular zombified rebel soldier mutt. The man-mutt shambled towards them, his rotted face contorting in a croaking rasp of hunger as his torn uniform hung limply on his rotting form. Horrified, Lorraina began to scream while Ines attacked the beast with her spear, jabbing it into its soft skull. The zombified mutt stumbled backwards but still kept coming towards them. However, it moved slowly, and Ines and Lorraina were able to run away and avoid further confrontation with it after losing it in the maze of trenches. Poultry did not do much throughout this day, spending much of his day in the small area of the trenches where he had discovered piles of rations and jugs of water before going back to the sleeping area for the night. Patty spent most of her day exploring the ruins of the farming village where she was hiding out in the eastern stretches of the arena. Besides the jugs of wine in her own shack, she was able to find some old cans of food she pried open with her fingers. A lot of the food was spoiled, but she found enough to keep her from being absolutely starved. She also found a shepherd's crook in one of the ruined houses, probably used to herd the abandoned village's long-gone animals. Patty took it to use as a potential weapon before returning to her shack to rest for the night.

While the other Outliers had calmer days outside of Ines and Lorraina's confrontation with the zombified rebel soldier mutt, Quincey was not so lucky. The boy from 9 slumbered till about noon, extremely tired out from the stressful events of the day prior. When he woke up, he walked back towards the polluted lake, searching its banks for any supplies but turning up empty. He began to feel light headed from thirst and the fumes from the polluted lake, and he decided to go back to his hiding spot to rest some more. As he was walking back, he spotted the Careers on the horizon, surveying the nearby rubble. Quincey attempted to hide, shaking in fear, but Angelo spotted him and immediately gave chase, the other Careers following closely behind. Quincey desperately darted out from the rubble he was hiding in and sprinted towards the lake, hoping to find something there to help him. However, the shores only offered oily water, and Angelo was soon close to the 9 boy as he screamed for help. There was no one to answer his calls, however, and soon Angelo's machete was being stabbed over and over into his back until he stopped struggling in the polluted mud of the lake's bank. Angelo gave one final stab into Quincey's ruined back before the boy's cannon fired, meaning only eleven tributes remained in the arena.

Quincey Weiss, District 9 Male; 12th, Killed by Angelo, Day 2

After Angelo polished off Quincey, the Careers combed the rest of the shoreline of the massive polluted lake before deciding that there was no other tributes to discover in this part of the arena. They returned to the Cornucopia by dusk, rejoining Ibiza and having a joyous meal with her. The pack were all in high spirits so far, as they were proud of how they seemed to be succeeding in the Games and how none of the Outliers seemed to be of big threat level to them. They went to bed early while the Outliers settled down as well, nothing further occuring that night as the tributes all slumbered fitfully.

In the morning, the Careers decided to head south to hunt for tributes. They all agreed that there hadn't been much to the arena beyond the polluted lake to the west, and they guessed the more interesting parts of the arena would lay to the north and south. Thus, they suited up to go hunting in the southern quadrant of the arena. Ibiza ended up going hunting today, as the group agreed no one should stay behind to play guard too often, and Angelo begrudgingly agreed to stay behind since he'd gotten to kill Quincey the day prior. Thus, Gleam, the 2s, and Ibiza trooped south to go hunting, and after a couple of hours they arrived at the maze of Capitol trenches that lay there. They all suddenly understood the quirk to this arena, and they guessed that a similar maze of trenches laid to the north. While the pack usually split up to hunt, they agreed to stick together since no one knew what traps would be there, and it would be very easy for them to get split up and lost in such a complicated series of earthen corridors. Thus, the pack slid into the trenches and began to walk forward in a tight cluster, slowly beginning to search the trenches to the best of their ability.

There was not much action in the arena outside of the southern trenches. Angelo was unbothered guarding the Horn. In the northern corner of the arena, Udwin refused to move from where he had set up his cot next to the water drum, feeling too safe to venture elsewhere. Meanwhile, Ines and Lorraina were similarly inactive, as they were terrified after their encounter with the zombified rebel mutt the day earlier. They did not want to run into one again, and they debated leaving the trenches to find somewhere else to hide. However, the young women agreed that the trenches offered more safety than the sparse rubble they'd passed above while fleeing the Bloodbath despite the mutts, and they ultimately stayed. Patty also remained in her ruined village, finding more cans of food to eat as well as more jugs of spiced wine that kept her warm and jolly as she sang and danced around all day by herself unmolested by anything in the arena.

The Careers spent the whole day searching the southern trenches where Abraham and Poultry were camped out. Abraham was lucky to avoid their searches; his pile of barrels was not far from the beginning of the trenches, but they were still a complex system, and the Careers did not travel down the corridor where he was concealed. However, Poultry was not as fortunate. Rex was the first to spot the piece of twine on the ground in one of the corridors that Poultry used to navigate between his eating and sleeping areas. They arrived at the room where his cot was placed, but it was empty, so the Careers followed the twine to the other side where they found Poultry napping with a half eaten packet of jerky in his lap. The 10 boy jerked awake as the Careers loomed over him, and he began to scream desperately. There was nothing he could do, however; Rex had spotted him first and thus was allowed the kill, and the 2 boy relished smashing his mace into Poultry's skull over and over until his cannon boomed throughout the arena.

Poultry Secourt, District 10 Male; 11th, Killed by Rex, Day 3

The Careers continued to hunt through the southern trenches after killing Poultry until nightfall, when they exited so they would not get lost in the dark. They knew they had yet to explore even half of the southern trench maze so far, knowing that there were most likely other tributes still hiding down there. Thus, they agreed to return the next day and explore the areas they had neglected to search that day. When they returned, Angelo had stoked the fire to a roar, and the pack was rewarded with a meal of raw steaks from sponsors to enjoy for their great efforts thus far. They now made up half of the tributes left on only the third day, and many in the Capitol were enamored with the good-natured group of trained killers who most were sure would come out on top this year.

Day 4 was largely uneventful. Gleam stayed back to guard the Cornucopia while the Careers returned to the southern trenches. They trekked past where Abraham was hiding, but they disregarded the jumble of barrels and did not think anyone would be hiding inside them. Abraham was terrified when he heard them coming, and he was relieved to have survived when they kept walking on by. The Careers ended up searching most of the southern trenches by nightfall but decided they needed to search the last corners again in the morning. Meanwhile, not much else happened throughout the rest of the arena; Udwin, Ines, and Lorraina moved around a bit more in the northern trenches but nothing remarkable happened, while Patty continued to enjoy getting drunk on the spiced wine in the bombed-out farming village.

On the morning of Day 5, the Careers left Ibiza to guard the Cornucopia as she said she was exhausted from two days of hunting. The other Careers did not question it; there was little animosity between any of them despite there being so few Outliers left, and Ibiza was left in peace to guard the Horn while the other four trekked south to finish exploring the southern trenches. The arena had become eeriely peaceful, the fast pace of the Games having slowed to a crawl with little conflict among any of the tributes left in the arena. The Capitol was beginning to grow bored with these Games, and Rufana Halispell knew she had to intervene to spice things up and add some drama as the Careers searched the southern trenches for the third day in a row, double-checking their previous hunts.

A couple hours after noon, as the Careers were stopping to eat lunch in the middle of one of the corridors, they suddenly heard the loud croaking sounds of the zombified soldier mutts. They had spotted a couple of the creatures in the distance the prior day and had avoided them, knowing their shuffling gait and inhuman noises meant they were not tributes. However, the Careers all quickly stood as two dozen zombified Peacekeeper mutts shambled out of the darkness towards where they were resting. The creatures moved faster than they had all Games, propelled by the Gamemakers to attack the Careers and create some drama. The Careers were horrified, recognizing the creatures as humanoid mutts that had not been employed in years but were notoriously more difficult to kill than other mutts. The four Careers arced up to fight the zombified mutts as they rushed towards them.

The Careers were widely successful for a long time as they fought the zombified mutts, working together to chop them into bits so they could not fight back. While the mutts were creepy and faster than they had been, they had no intellect and just dumbly clawed at the Careers without strategy. Thus, it was pretty easy for the Careers to fend them off. However, when most of the mutts were dead, once lurched towards Ambrosia and suddenly locked its unhinged jaw around her right shoulder. The 2 girl screamed, cutting it to bits and wrenching its rotted head off of her shoulder, but the damage was already done. Her wound was dripping red blood and already turning a ghastly gray color, and Ambrosia began to groan and croak strangely. Gleam, Rex, and Angelo were all terrified, and Gleam murmured that it seemed like Ambrosia had been bitten by one of the zombie creatures and was turning into one. There was a silent consensus among the remaining Careers, and as they backed away from where Ambrosia was twitching on the ground, slowly turning into a zombie, Gleam pulled out her bow. She easily nocked an arrow and shot it into Ambrosia's temple, putting the unlucky Career girl out of her misery before she could complete her transformation. Then the remaining three Careers out hunting sped away to avoid more zombified creatures that were appearing as Ambrosia's cannon rang ominously.

Ambrosia Heath, District 2 Female; 10th, Killed by Gleam, Day 5

As the last three Careers were sprinting through the trenches towards the ones where they could escape, they ran past Abraham's barrels, once again neglecting to see him. The 7 boy was relieved once the Careers were gone, crawling out of his barrel to stretch his sore arms and legs. However, he soon spotted what they had been terrified of. The 7 boy screamed in terror as several of the zombified mutts lurched towards him, their ragged antique Peacekeeper uniforms hanging on their rotted bodies limply. Abraham began to sprint as quickly as he could in the similar direction the Careers had gone as the zombies pursued him.

Angelo was the last Career to crawl out of the trenches, and as he looked back he spotted Abraham speeding down the trench below. He called Rex and Gleam over, and the 1 girl nocked an arrow to take out the boy as he rushed below in terror, so consumed with his flight from the zombies that he did not notice the Careers above. Before Gleam could release an arrow, however, the zombie mutts were on top of Abraham, clawing at him and tearing him limb for limb. The Careers were horrified by the sight, and they ran away while the zombie mutts were distracted dismembering Abraham so that they could not be caught. Thus, the 7 boy was left alone to die as he screeched for almost an hour while the zombie mutts tore viciously into him until he fell still.

Abraham Collier, District 7 Male; 9th, Killed by zombie mutts, Day 5

That left the Top 8: Gleam Raybould from District 1, Rex Darien from District 2, Udwin Keniye from District 3, Ibiza Tran from District 4, Angelo Reyes from District 4, Ines Hidalgo from District 10, Lorraina Kempt from District 11, and Patty Reinerger from District 12.

Gleam, Rex, and Angelo quickly sprinted back to the Cornucopia where Ibiza was waiting. She was shocked to see Ambrosia gone, and the pack was much more tense without their charismatic leader there to unite them and smooth over any small conflicts between them. Rex was very broken up over the death of his District partner, but he tried to cover it up by making raucous jokes all night. He also began to joke about Ibiza's cowardice about refusing to come hunt with the others. Ibiza bristled at this comment, saying someone needed to play guard, especially in a desolate arena like this one, but Rex brushed off her comments and told her she was being too sensitive. Ibiza remained quiet, not wanting to start conflict, but she glared at Rex whenever his back was turned to her. Angelo was conflicted about the fight, as he had District loyalty to Ibiza but got along great with Rex, while Gleam was doing her best to hold down the campsite and assume the mantle of leadership as the strongest fighter left. However, she felt that the guys were overlooking her because of the airhead blonde stereotype many of her fellow District 1 females played into, and this led her to feel a bit agitated as well with the others in the pack.

The next morning, the Careers agreed to go hunting in the eastern sector of the arena, as they were all a bit nervous to go investigate the northern area of the arena as they expected more zombie-infested trenches to lay there. Thus, Angelo stayed back to guard the Cornucopia while Gleam, Rex, and Ibiza marched out to the eastern part of the arena to go hunting. They spent much of the day checking the several piles of rubble between the Cornucopia and the ruined farming village before arriving there a couple of hours before dusk.

Patty was already half-drunk when she spotted the Careers on the horizon, and she quickly rushed into the small shack she had been hiding in for most of the Games, scrambling to grab her shepherd's crook to defend herself with. She swayed slightly as she waited in the shadows for the Careers as they began investigating the village. Ibiza was the first to open the rotting wooden door into the dilapidated hut where Patty had been staying. She instantly spotted the broken wine jugs and the half-eaten cans of food and called her allies over before entering further. Patty immediately rushed Ibiza desperately, swinging her shepherd's crook around crazily in an attempt to scare her off. Ibiza gracefully dodged Patty's heavy blows before using her trident to spear the 12 girl in the abdomen. Patty croaked, the shepherd's crook dropping from her hands as Ibiza drew the prongs of her trident out of her bloodied gut. Ibiza left the girl to bleed out, knowing the Capitol would enjoy the long death as she, Gleam, and Rex trekked back to the Cornucopia. As the sun began to set over the arena, Patty gave her last twitches and bled out from the horrid wounds she had sustained from her fight with Ibiza.

Patty Reinerger, District 12 Female; 8th, Killed by Ibiza, Day 6

As the Careers returned to the Cornucopia, the other three tributes were all still in the northern reaches of the arena. Ines and Lorraina had not done much for several days, exploring the trenches bit by bit but refusing to walk much after their encounter with the zombie mutt on the second day. However, their wealth of supplies from the Bloodbath as well as their likable personalities meant that the Capitol liked them best of the remaining Outliers. Meanwhile, Udwin was seen as a sneak who had done little throughout the Games, but as the numbers had dwindled he had begun to explore the trenches in more depth. That evening, he discovered a corridor packed with rebel zombie mutts that had been locked behind iron bars to separate them from the rest of the trenches. Udwin slowly formed an idea in his mind, knowing that there was bound to be other tributes in the area as he observed the dozens of zombies trapped in the cage snapping their jaws at him viciously.

The next morning, the four remaining Careers awoke and began debating what to do for the day. Gleam and Ibiza both wanted to head north and search what they presumed would be trenches up there, knowing it had to be where the rest of the tributes were hiding. However, Rex was very cautious, trying to pretend he just wanted a day for them to rest when in actuality he seemed to be fearful of facing more of the zombified mutts that had killed Ambrosia. Angelo hesitantly agreed with Rex that they should stay, causing an argument between the Careers. Ultimately, the girls relented and agreed to rest for a day after Rex got incredibly emotional towards them, as they did not want the group to split yet. However, they both seemed extremely irritated with Rex's refusal to go hunting with so few tributes left.

In the northern trenches, Udwin could be seen sprinting around and searching for anyone else. He knew he needed to do something if he wanted to go home to his family in District 3, and thus he was searching best he could for the other remaining Outliers he had a feeling were also hiding in the northern trenches with him. As he was running, he heard far off voices and recognized them as the voices of Ines and Lorraina. The two girls were only a trench over, where they were resting and eating the last of their rations from the Bloodbath. Memorizing where they were, Udwin began to rush back towards the cage of zombified mutts he had discovered earlier, and he began blocking off the exits into other trenches with crates, barrels, and whatever else he could find until he had formed a path towards where the girls were resting.

As the sun began to set over the arena, Lorraina and Ines had not moved much at all, and Udwin had successfully created a path for the zombies straight to where the two young women were resting without knowing the imminent danger they were facing. Udwin climbed up one of the dirt walls of the trench until he was standing on top of the dirt wall that separated the trench that held the zombies and the one nearby. Once it was deep into the night, the beginning of Day 8, Udwin undid the latch on the top of the fence and watched as the zombie mutts poured forth. Several clawed at the wall where the 3 boy was crouched, eagerly trying to scrabble him up, but most rushed forwards to where they could smell Ines and Lorraina resting.

The girls from 10 and 11 were starting to doze off when they heard the chorus of desperate croaking that they knew meant the zombie mutts were coming. They quickly snatched up their spears and began to run away, but they soon found they were at the end of the trenches. They turned and saw the two dozen zombie mutts Udwin had released barreling towards them, and the two girls did their best to defend themselves. Ines leapt forward as the better fighter, screaming at Lorraina to run so she would have time to escape. However, Lorraina refused, saying that if she was going to die, she was going to go down fighting with her best friend. Both girls began to cry in fear, sadness, and at the beauty of their loyalty as they faced the mutts. They tried their best, but there was nothing two untrained Outlier girls could do when they were cornered against these vicious mutts. Within ten minutes, they were near death as the mutts tore them to shreds, with Lorraina dying moments before Ines as the girls died right next to one another.

Lorraina Kempt, District 11 Female; 7th, Killed by Udwin and zombie mutts, Day 8

Ines Hidalgo, District 10 Female; 6th, Killed by Udwin and zombie mutts, Day 8

Upon hearing the two cannons, Udwin knew his attack had been successful, and he climbed down into another trench that was not infested by zombies. The Capitolites were intrigued with the slight, dark skinned boy from 3 that they had all written off, wondering what he would be able to do up against the four remaining Careers. They showered him with gifts, sending him an armored breastplate to protect himself from weapons as well as copious amounts of food and water to refresh him as the Games neared their end.

Meanwhile, back at the Cornucopia, Gleam was on guard once the first cannon fired. The other Careers began to stir at this, and they were all awake by the time the second cannon fired. There was a sudden awareness that there was only one Outlier left in the Games, and the tense, crackling air between the alliance suddenly raised to a fever pitch. They all tried to play it off, and Rex offered to take over for Gleam on guard after they discussed awkwardly who they thought might have died. Gleam acquiesced to this, laying down and sleeping while the 4s also seemed to drift off to sleep.

As Rex guarded the Cornucopia, he suddenly turned towards the girls and stood over Ibiza, murmuring to himself about how she had been weak and shy throughout the Games and was a useless threat. He then turned to where Gleam was slumbering and decided that it was time to make a move and take out the strongest tribute while she was defenseless and asleep. He picked up his mace and raised it above Gleam's skull, ready to kill her. Suddenly, though, he felt a sharp pain in the back of his head. Stumbling to the ground, Rex gasped as he felt the prongs of Ibiza's trident be ripped from his skull. The 4 girl kicked him in the face, telling him he was foolish for being so cocky and talking about her weakness while he thought she was asleep. She then slammed her trident into his skull again, killing off the 2 boy.

Rex Darien, District 2 Male; 5th, Killed by Ibiza, Day 8

Gleam and Angelo both awoke again, as they had all been barely asleep due to the stress of the Games. Ibiza explained that Rex had been attempting to kill Gleam in her sleep, and that she was not going to allow the pack to break up like that. Gleam was thankful to Ibiza for saving her life, but Angelo felt very uncomfortable, as he knew the girls were close. Feeling like an outsider, he pretended to be alright with what was going on, but as the girls went back to sleep and he was left on guard, Angelo began stuffing supplies into a backpack before abandoning the alliance in hopes of not having to face the girls on his own.

As he ran away, however, he suddenly felt the sharp pricks of an arrow driving its way into the back of his skull. Angelo didn't even have time to scream, collapsing heavily on the dirt as his brain quickly shut down from the arrowhead that had pierced it. Gleam shook her head as she strode over to the dying 4 boy and pulled her arrow free, Ibiza walking with her as well and telling Angelo he should've been smarter than that. The 4 boy could do nothing but lay there as he swiftly bled out, making muffled pained sounds as Ibiza held his hand and Gleam watched with bemusement.

Angelo Reyes, District 4 Male; 4th, Killed by Gleam, Day 8

After Angelo was dead, the two remaining Career girls agreed to stick together to hunt down the last Outlier before having a final showdown between the two of them. Gleam was confident she was a stronger fighter than Ibiza, while Ibiza thought she would be able to hold her own in hand to hand combat against the 1 girl. Thus, the two rested up a bit until the sun rose before hiking off northwards where they were certain the last tribute in the Games besides them must be hiding.

Hearing the other two cannons after releasing the zombies that had killed Ines and Lorraina, Udwin had realized that the Career pack had split. He was joyous that he only had to face two of them and not four, but he also knew it was still going to be difficult to outwit them. Deciding to go straight for the punch, Udwin was waiting on the edge of one of the trenches when Gleam and Ibiza approached. The girls from 1 and 4 were shocked to see the little boy left, as they had been expecting Ines, and they were even more surprised to see him waiting openly for them. In fact, one of the trenches that Udwin had trapped the zombies inside of when killing Lorraina and Ines was right behind him, and he hoped to lure the girls inside. He quickly jumped into the trench, dodging one of the zombies that attacked him before scrambling up one of the walls and into a safe trench.

Gleam and Ibiza ran to the edge of the trench before seeing the zombies milling about below. They realized Udwin was trying to get them to enter it and get attacked, but neither Career was willing to take that risk. Instead, they entered the trenches from an area that was not infested with zombies and began hunting around eagerly for Udwin, calling out his name. The 3 boy realized the Career girls had not been foolish enough to take his bait, and his only idea was to run towards the cage where he had released the zombies from. He reached it, climbing in and locking the metal doors. Zombies scrabbled at the bars, but the caged area was wide and Udwin was able to hide inside without their arms reaching him.

The girls from 1 and 4 jogged through the trench next to the one they knew was infested with zombies, and they began to wonder if Udwin was hiding inside of that one. Together they climbed up one of the walls and spotted Udwin curled up in the back of the cage. He had thought it would protect him from the Career girls, but he had forgotten Gleam was a talented archer. The 1 girl steadied herself before nocking an arrow and firing at Udwin from above. The 3 boy tried to dodge the shot, and the arrow clanged against his breastplate. However, the next one dug into his temple, killing the last Outlier in the arena swiftly.

Udwin Keniye, District 3 Male; 3rd, Killed by Gleam, Day 8

Now that Udwin was dead, Ibiza and Gleam climbed down from the wall where Gleam had shot him from to have their fair final fight, as honorable Careers preferred to do. They agreed to walk back to the Horn together, refresh themselves on food and water, and then fight to the death. The Capitol was excited by the two girls who had become good friends and their respect for one another as they exited the trenches and made it back to the Cornucopia without turning on one another. Once they had taken their fill of food and water at the Horn, they began their final duel.

Gleam only had two arrows left, and she quickly emptied them at Ibiza in close range. The 4 girl was able to dodge the first one, but the other one dug into her right thigh. Gritting her teeth, Ibiza lunged at Gleam as the 1 girl pulled out a long, serrated dagger she kept in her boot. The two began to duel fiercely, trident against dagger, as they danced around the packed dirt of the Cornucopia field in their all-important final battle. The fight lasted for well over an hour, with the two talented fighters getting dozens of small cuts across one another until they were both smattered with blood but still kicking.

Suddenly, Ibiza was able to use her trident to finally disarm Gleam and send the 1 girl's dagger flying through the air. Gleam quickly retaliated, however, rolling across the ground and using her legs to kick Ibiza's trident from her grasp. She then leaped on top of the 4 girl and began to throttle her, wrapping her slender hands around Ibiza's windpipe and pressing down hard. The 4 girl thrashed, barely able to breathe, but suddenly one of her hands closed around a rock that was on the ground above her head. She eagerly grabbed onto it and slammed it into Gleam's temple, making a bloody dent in the 1 girl's skull and forcing her to release her hands from Ibiza's throat.

Ibiza struggled to suck in breath, choking and coughing on her ruined throat, while Gleam staggered backwards, grasping onto her profusely bleeding head. Once Ibiza could breathe again, she tackled Gleam and began slamming the stone into her head again and again, not pausing to pick up another, easier weapon to finish her off with. Gleam scratched Ibiza's face and chest open with her sharp nails and writhed as Ibiza bashed her head in, but within two minutes Ibiza was able to crush Gleam's skull enough that the glittering girl from 1 was an ugly, bloody mess beneath her.

Gleam Raybould, District 1 Female; 2nd, Killed by Ibiza, Day 8

"Ibiza Tran of District 4, you are the Victor of the Sixty First Hunger Games!" Caesar and Claudius shouted with joy in their voices at the thrilling final day of these Games as the trumpets trilled Victoriously behind them. Ibiza crawled off of Gleam's still corpse with another hard cough from her bruised throat as she staggered to her feet. She managed to get a beaming smile on her face and start whooping in Victory as the hovercraft descended to pick her up, basking in the glory of finally getting to go home and having broken her District's drought of Victors.

Aftermath

District 4 was absolutely ecstatic to receive their first Victor since Syren Calanthe eighteen years prior. While the District often produced stronger tributes and was a Career District, they had been suffering from an infamous drought of Victors, being unable to bring anyone home for many years. However, Ibiza broke this curse on the District, bringing Victory back to District 4 and revitalizing her home District with energy and hope. While District 4's Careers had begun to get weaker, and some years there weren't even volunteers for both slots, Ibiza's Victory brought new life to its tributes. They began to train harder, and there was no longer the common chance that 4 might not produce two volunteers, as many teenagers in 4 began to clamor to enter the Games for the District. Ibiza was a pretty popular Victor at first, as she was sweet and likable while still being a strong fighter and survivor. However, she suffered from depression over her Games for a very long time, turning to risky sex and drugs like morphling to help her cope. These things, as well as a scandalous tryst with a hated Outlier Victor, turned many Capitolites off of her. These scandals plus her quieter nature led her to fade from the limelight as the public viewed her poorly and more popular Careers won after her. She was often prostituted by President Snow like many of her fellow Victors, and she seemed to view it unfavorably. While she was a Career and got along with the other Career Victors, Ibiza seemed to have a soft spot for many of the Outliers and got along well with them, which was rare for a Career of her time. She was by all senses of the word an unconventional Career. As she began to mature, she started acting in TV shows and movies in the Capitol, as dramatic acting was her talent, and she began to regain popularity. By the time she was fully grown, she had gotten over her mental health and addiction issues, and she matured into a strong leader. After Mags suffered from her stroke, Ibiza helped take over the Academy in District 4 and would help lead it in some capacity until her death, as her kind yet strict nature allowed her to be a great Headmistress.

Ibiza would live to age 96, dying around the 140th Hunger Games from old age. Ibiza had her scandalous relationship with Dirk Tautson of District 6 for several years after her Victory, but their relationship deteriorated due to the bad publicity and their respective issues with depression and addiction. Once her mental health improved, she would get married in her 40s and have a child of her own that did not enter the Hunger Games.

The payouts on her Victory weren't great, as 13% bet on her.

Her Victory Tour was pretty strong; Ibiza had a love for acting, and she was able to deliver her speeches very well to the crowds. There were no conflicts with people of the Districts as she was kind and likable, and she also was not well liked by any of the Districts either. However, her return to District 4 was met by one of the biggest Victory celebrations ever seen, as they were so relieved to finally have another Victor.

A/N: There we have Ibiza's Games! These chapters have been coming quick because I've been really interested in this story, so I hope you've been enjoying the quick updates! It's been a long time since we've had a District 4 Victor, and I thought it would be unrealistic for District 4 to go almost a quarter of a century between Syren and Finnick before getting a Victor, so I thought Ibiza would be a great Victor to break the dry spell. I hope you enjoyed this chapter, it was a fun arena and I liked Ibiza as a Victor, especially due to her up and down post-Games lifestyle. Now that Ibiza is done, however, we're heading into a string of canon Victors you're all going to recognize! Enobaria, Gloss, Cashmere, Finnick, Annie, and Johanna are all within the next ten Games so I hope you guys are ready to see their Games, and I hope I do them justice! Let me know what you thought in a review :)

Until Next Time,
