Hey guys! This fanfic has been stuck in my head for a long time and I finally had the time to write it down. I hope you enjoy it!

The Beauty Of It All

They are coming. Hundreds of Morgana´s soldiers march in Camelots direction. In maybe less than an hour they will reach the castle walls. Inside chaos is everywhere. The people of Camelot are running through the streets hoping to find some place safe. King Arthur gathers his knights around him trying to figure out what exactly is going on and how they can protect their home. Only a few hours ago some of the knights came back from their patrol completely out of breath mumbling about an army that is coming with Morgana as their leader. Since then everything became messy.

Merlin never had dressed Arthur in his armour so fast before in his whole life. Arthur runs to the great gate with the knights at his heels, Merlin following in some distance. Right in front of the gate they stop and watch the scenery ahead of them. There are still people running through the fields trying to get behind the walls in time. Morgana and her soldiers already are very close and the Kings eyes widen when he sees what all the soldiers are carrying.

"Catapults!...Where the hell did she get catapults from!?" he exclaims and takes a closer look at the half dozen catapults, each over 10 meters high and probably with such a power that Camelots walls will fall in minutes in a serious attack. Suddenly the mass stops and Morgana´s voice is carried over to them by the wind.
"Hello dear brother. Finally I get to see you again after all this time. I would come over to you but I am not in the mood for a pyre at the moment, I am a sorceress after all! No matter what my choices could have been I would always have ended up where I am now. Knowing that I would burn if I ever came back to Camelot. So I came to return the favour" she says and lifts one hand mumbling some words of the old religion. Suddenly her hands are on fire and she lights up the ammunition for the catapults.

"Now you will finally find out what you have done to my kind all these years" she says turning around and lifting her hand once again. The gate rattles dangerously and starts coming down. Arthur reacts quickly.

"Hold it! Hold the gate! There are still people outside!" he shouts helping the gatekeepers to hold the mechanism. There are only a few people left outside who are trying to run even faster even though they are completely exhausted already. Some of the brutal soldiers of Morgana leave the group and start running after some of the women who are screaming in fear.

"Run! We cant only hold it for a short time!" Arthur screams knowing that any minute the gate will be rushing down. In a split second he focuses on the field instead of the mechanism and is relieved to see that everybody came in...damn it not everybody! A woman has been caught by the brutes and Arthur can see them hitting her in the face before he has to concentrate on his task again. Percival and Gwaine are standing under the gate now, holding it up with their shoulders as best as they can but Morgana´s magic is too powerful.

"We...cant..hold it...any longer" Percival mutters through gritted teeth feeling his knees slowly giving away under the force. In this moment something happens...it happens really fast. Nobody had really noticed than Merlin was there. He stood by the side as the knights could clearly do more than a simple servant. But as he heard the scream of the woman outside he lifted his eyes and took a better look at her since she sounded familiar somehow. Merlin does not move a muscle and everything around him disappears in a fuzz. The only thing he can see is the woman getting hit by the brutes and something snaps in him. Arthur can feel that something is wrong and looks up to see his servant standing there eyes widened in shock whispering "mother" and suddenly breaking into a full sprint. Merlin reaches the gate in the second everything gives in. With one leap he rolls under the falling gate whilst managing to grab Gwaine´s sword from his belt.

"Merlin!" Arthur shouts in fear for his manservant but he feels relieved to see that Merlin did get through without getting hurt. But Arthur has no time to wonder about Merlin´s agility...and his stupidity. Without even turning around Merlin runs in his mother´s direction with the sword in his hand. He sees one of the brutes standing over her shivering body with his sword lifted over his head ready to kill her with one hit. The sword starts falling down but before ever hitting the woman there is a loud clang. Merlin had reached her in time and blocked the hit with his sword whilst kneeling next to his mother.

Angrily the man starts hitting Merlin over and over again, finally disarming him and then starting to kick the boy who is now lying on the ground curling away from the pain.

Arthur can´t even scream any more. In shock he stands there looking through the gate and not able to do anything at all. With a gruesome laugh the brute turns to the woman again and Arthur fears that his manservant will never stand up again. But upon seeing that man turning back to his mother Merlin gathers all his strength and miraculously manages to stand up and walk a few steps before falling down next to her. The man lifts his sword again and lets it fly down on Hunith with a last deadly blow.

"NO!" Merlin and Arthur scream simultaneously but to the kings surprise the sword never meets its target. Merlin had thrown himself over his mother and lifted one arm as if to catch the sword with his bare hands...the sword miraculously stopped in mid-air.
