Severide leant on the side of the coffee machine, waiting for it to finish making his drink. He checked his phone, finding a few messages from Boden and the rest of 51, who had been constantly checking up on Casey since the accident. It had been a week since the fire where Casey was injured and Severide had visited him as often as he could, having been kicked out several times when he tried to stay after visiting hours. Severide grabbed his coffee and began to head towards Casey's room. As he walked past reception, he saw Herrmann walk through the main entrance.
'Hey, Severide! Wait up!'
Severide stopped and smiled as Herrmann jogged towards him.
'Hey Herrmann, I'm guessing you're here to see Casey.'
Herrmann nodded as they both started to make their way towards Casey's room.
'Yup, thought I'd come and check in on him. How's he doing?'
Severide grinned, holding the door to the corridor open for a nurse before answering.
'He's doing much better; you can tell by how much he has been complaining about being stuck in the hospital! He can go home tomorrow actually, as long as he is staying with someone else. It has taken me and Shay days to convince him to come stay with us, he says he doesn't want to be a burden to anyone!'
Herrmann chuckled, that definitely sounded like his Lieutenant. They both stopped just around the corner from Casey's room, and Herrmann's face straightened as he asked the question that had been on the back of his mind.
'So… how long will it be before Casey can come back to work?'
Severide's smile faded, and he sighed as he ran a hand through his hair.
'The docs said recovery time is 6-8 weeks… maybe longer. He's gonna go crazy with all the sitting around and waiting.'
Herrmann frowned slightly, and placed a reassuring hand on Severide's shoulder.
'Ah, he's one of the strongest guys I know. It won't be long before he's back at 51 ordering us all around!'
Severide nodded slowly, before smiling at Herrmann as they walked around the corner and towards Casey's room.
Severide grinned at the scene unfolding in front of him. He had arrived that morning at around 10, with a change of clothes for Casey to change into. Casey was being discharged, and had filled out all of the paperwork, but he was now arguing with a nurse, who was standing next to a wheelchair with her arms crossed and was looking at him sternly.
'It's hospital policy. Wheelchair to the entrance of the hospital.'
'I'm fine. I can walk by myself. I do not need a wheelchair.'
The nurse sighed, and turned around to look at Severide. He chuckled to himself, before stepping forward to give her a hand.
'Hey Case, we could have been out of this hospital 5 minutes ago if you weren't arguing over a chair, so sit your ass down and let's go.'
Casey scowled, as he grabbed his bag, put it in his lap and sat down in the wheelchair. The nurse smirked at Severide, before turning the wheelchair around and pushing it through the door. As soon as they got to the entrance, Casey got out of the seat and grabbed his bag, still huffing about not needing a wheelchair. Severide rolled his eyes at Casey and thanked the nurse, who smiled before turning around and heading back into the hospital. Severide made his way over to where Casey was standing, trying to find his car keys which he had stuffed in one of his jacket pockets.
'So, you wait here and I'll get the car and bring it round.'
Casey shook his head at Severide before beginning to walk towards the car park.
'No way, you made me get in that damn wheelchair. I am walking to the car.'
Severide sighed, before jogging to catch up with Casey. He wasn't moving particularly quickly and after a couple minutes of walking, Severide glanced over and saw the look of frustration on Casey's face as he realised maybe walking was a bad idea. Severide shook his head slightly, before running ahead, getting his car and driving back to Casey. He got out and took Casey's bag, chucking it into the back before getting back into the drivers seat and pulling out of the car park.
As soon as the apartment door opened, Shay spun around and ran towards the two guys walking into the room. Severide was carrying Casey's bag and turned around to close the door, as Casey struggled to take off his jacket.
'Casey! It's so good to see you!'
Casey turned around and grinned at Shay as she pulled him into a hug, being gentle as she knew he was still in pain.
'You're acting like you haven't seen me in ages. You literally came to visit every-day with Severide.'
Shay grinned up at him, as she helped him take off his jacket and hang it up by the door.
'Well, I would have come to get you but I knew about a certain policy involving a wheelchair and I thought I would let Kelly deal with that! Anyway, I had to have something good ready for you to eat after a week of hospital food! Although I have to admit, this food does come in the form of pizza… and let's just say it's not homemade!'
Casey smiled gratefully at Shay, as they made their way over to the couch.
'Pizza sounds great, thanks Shay.'
Severide went over to the spare room, and threw Casey's bag onto the bed, before making his way back into the living room. Casey was sat down, looking uncomfortable as he tried to find the best position to sit. Shay walked back into the living room with the pizza in her hands, and looked on in amusement as Severide fussed over whether Casey was comfortable enough, and watched as he tried to get Casey to use another cushion.
