You know, the muse strikes at the worst times. I'm supposed to be doing a creative writing assignment, but I'm going to do some creative writing of my own.
Deeks watched Kensi from across the street, unable to contain a little bark of laughter as he watched her flop spread-eagle on the side walk, closing her eyes. Medics rushed to her side, bus she waved a tired hand in their direction. She wasn't hurt, just exhausted. 4 days undercover with no sleep had worn her out. The both of them, actually. Deeks just wasn't as dramatic. Deeks crossed over to her, kneeling down at her shoulder.
"Hey, baby," he said, tugging on the strap of her Kevlar vest. "Whatcha doing?"
"Mmmm," Kensi replied, curling her face up in a scowl, eyes still closed.
"You hurt?" Deeks asked, tugging on her vest again. Kensi shook her head, letting her whole body go limp. "You wanna go home?"
"T'rd," Kensi murmured, burying her face in her arms.
"Yeah, me too, baby. We'll go home, okay? Stand up, come on." Deeks let go of her vest and stood up. Kensi shook her head.
"I'll jus' stay h're," she mumbled. Deeks rolled his eyes.
"Okay, I'll just leave you here, on the sidewalk," Deeks said, walking away, shoving his hands in his jean pockets.
"W't, Deeeeks," Kensi whined and lifted her head, outstretching her arms, opening and closing her hands like a small kid asking for something.
"What, beautiful?" Deeks turned around. Kensi didn't say anything, just closed her eyes again. Deeks sighed, but laughed an exasperated laugh, tugging his phone from his front pocket before going and flopping on his belly beside her, crossing his arms under his head. Kensi smiled. "Nice place you got here, Kens. Soft bed, aroma of gasoline and gunpowder in the air, nice relaxing sounds of traffic and horns a few streets over..." Deeks trailed off when Kensi glared at him.
Kensi's phone buzzed in her back pocket and she reached to retrieve it.
"If that's another case I'm going to hurt someone," Deeks muttered as Kensi peered at the screen.
"Oh, it's jus' m' mom," Kensi remarked, closing her eyes once more.
"Oh yeah? How's your mom doing?" Deeks asked, just to annoy her.
"Sh't up," Kensi muttered.
"Yep, okay, shutting up." Deeks said quickly, rolling his head to the side to glance at her.
"What are you guys doing?" Deeks glanced up, seeing Sam standing above them, hands on hips.
"What's it look like? Napping," Deeks replied as if it were obvious. Sam laughed.
"Well, I'm going home. See you guys tomorrow." Sam stepped over the two, heading to his car.
"See ya, Sam!" Deeks yelled. He glanced over at Kensi. "Baby?"
"Mmmm," she mumbled.
"Can we go home now? I'm getting tired of laying on the sidewalk," Deeks complained, rolling over, sitting up and rubbing his shoulders. No response from Kensi. A glance over at her confirmed his suspicions. Mouth open slightly, chest rising and falling in slow, even breaths. Fast asleep. Deeks got to his knees, grabbing the straps of Kensi's vest and gently rolled her over onto her back, then pulling her up into a sitting position. Kensi snorted and her eyes fluttered open for a fleeting moment.
"Come on, baby, up you get," Deeks said, shifting his hands from her vest to underneath her arms, heaving her up on her feet.
"Mmmmm," Kensi murmured. "Deeeeeks, c'ry m'?" Kensi asked leaning her head on his shoulder.
"You're a big girl, Kensilina. You can walk, baby girl." Deeks stepped away, but Kensi made no attempt to move. Deeks sighed, turned, and scooped her up, one arm wrapped around her shoulders, pressing their chests together. The other arm looped over her legs, his hand landing beneath the backs of her knees. Her lower legs faced behind him, swinging slowly as Deeks headed towards the car. Kensi wrapped an arm around his neck, nuzzling her face into his ear. She snuffled into his ear. Deeks rolled his eyes.
"You want me to take you home?" a voice behind him asked. Deeks turned around to see Callen.
"You know what? That would be great. Not so easy to drive when you have a clingy girlfriend sleeping on you," Deeks said, turning and following Callen tp his black Mercedes.
"Your place or hers?" Callen asked as Deeks slid into the backseat, Kensi on his lap.
"Let's go mine," Deeks said, reaching up and moving Kensi's face away from his ear as she snuffled into it for the umpteenth time.
"You got it," Callen said, pulling away from the curb. Deeks gently began the task of unbuckling Kensi's Kevlar and tugging it over her head, before shifting her weight to get his off too. He tossed them on the seat beside him.
"Mission must've really worn her out, eh?" Callen asked, glancing at Deeks in the rearview mirror.
"I guess so. But I guess 4 days with no sleep will do that to you," Deeks replied, moving to card a gentle hand through Kensi's tangled locks. Callen nodded in agreement, and the rest of the ride was in silence. When the black Mercedes rolled upon to Deeks place, he scooted out in silence, nodded to Callen and carried his girlfriend inside.
Deeks heeled off his boots, then sat down on the edge of the couch, reaching down to untie and pull of Kensi's boots. He tossed them to the floor, then stood and moved to his recliner, voting to cuddle up there for a nap instead of the bed.
"Okay, baby girl, let's go to sleep." He sat down in it and wrapping his arms around Kensi. She curled into him, snuffling gratefully into his neck. He pulled a blanket from the basket on the floor near his chair, tucking it around them. Deeks kissed the top of her head, then leaned back and closed his eyes, falling into a blissful sleep.
