Chapter 5: Midlight

Remus broke from a trance. Had he watched Sirius walk completely out of sight? How long had he stood there? Remus ran up to his apartment. He struggled to unlock the door, so excited to tell Lily what just happened.

"Lily! I'm back!" Remus called walking into the apartment.

Lily responded. "Ok, give me just a minute."

Remus sat on the couch waiting for Lily.

She came out of her room moments later. "Alright, how was your date?"

"It was-" Remus looked at her. "Not a date, but Sirius really was cooler than he had been."

Lily plopped herself down next to him. "Is that so?"

"And he gave me this book." Remus grabbed the book titled midlight.

"That looks cool. Did he write anything inside?" she asked.

"I, I don't know." He opened the book to find a short message.

"Can I pretend to be Sirius and read this?"

Remus laughed. "Go for it."

Lily smirked. Then tried her hardest to find a male-sounding tone. "I find myself relating to the main character's best friend. When you're done reading I'd love to know who you felt like."

"Wonderful impression Lily." Remus chuckled, clapping.

"Why thank you." She smiled widely. "While you stay up all night reading be sure to find a character that's like me."

"Who says I'm staying up all night reading?"

"WHAT?" she gasped sarcastically. "No one would ever assume you'd stay up reading. For that has never been done."

"Whatever." Remus walked to his room and started reading

When Remus finished the book he had no idea what time it was. His eyes were tired, and he was sure Lily was asleep. He picked up his phone and checked the time. It was two in the morning, but he was still so glad he finished that book.

Midlight was a book about people who needed either the Sun or Moon to remain, unlike ordinary humans. The people had oddly decided to separate themselves. The main character is Ace. He's a Moon follower who was very curious about all the sources. Ace was never thought to be a face that stood out in the crowds. His best friend Liam was always kept secret because Liam took power from a star that wasn't the Sun.

Liam is a shapeshifter, and would often take dog form. Ace saw him and knew he was different. Ace recognized he was in love with Liam, but he couldn't be with someone who everyone thought didn't exist. Ace had to get both groups to accept different. He did this with the help of his Sun follower friend Angela.

Knowing Sirius relates to Liam helped Remus uncover a lot about Sirius. He could tell he'd been alone for some time but thrives with others. His biological family was something he'd never want to talk about. Maybe, just maybe he would date a guy.

Remus really felt a connection with Ace. Ace liked to be alone, but let a few people in. He's often overlooked. Ace knew how he felt but never really told anybody.

Of course, Remus' character had to fall in love with Sirius'. Remus was just going to leave that fact unspoken, and hopefully, Sirius would follow.

Remus sat for a minute, thinking about the next time he'd see Sirius. He closed his eyes and saw Sirius smiling at him. It was kind of a relaxed feeling, sitting there thinking about the guy he only met twice. Sure, yes, it was strange how this feeling developed quickly, but Remus knew how he felt and it was real.

"This character Angela reminds me of you." Remus said while Lily was making breakfast.

Lily looked at him. "What was she like?"

"She was a kind, brave person. Just like you." Explained Remus.

"Thanks, Remus." She smiled then turned back to the stovetop.

"Are you hanging out with James later?" Asked Remus.

"Yeah," Lily replied. Remus could hear her voice brighten.

Remus grinned. "Is it a date this time?"

She turned around. "Yes actually."

"Lily," Remus walked over to her and hugged her. "That's great."

"Yeah, it doesn't matter."
