Chapter 8: Lots to Read
"I think it's supposed to be a poem." Sirius showed James staring at the words puzzled.
"Let's see." James picked up his phone "How many syllables?"
"Seventeen, I think."
"Ok," James quickly typed something into his phone. "It's a haiku."
"I'm not going to ask, I'm just going to read." He looked down at the short note written inside.
Your leather jacket
That stupid, stupid jerk grin
Though, you draw me in.
"I'm kind of getting mixed messages." Sirius showed James the note.
"Heh, that's interesting."
"What does it mean?"
"He doesn't really like you, but at the same time, he's very deeply in love with you." James explained redirecting his attention to the timer he was setting.
"But what if?" Sirius started, about to stand up.
"You're reading."
"Oh, yeah." Sirius sat down and started reading the book.
Magic is a Gift by Remus Lupin, repeated on two pages. Thirteen chapters all with unique names. In the first chapter, no main character was yet introduced. It took a different approach to introduce the general characters.
After a few days of nothing but reading, Sirius finally finished the book. He enjoyed it for sure. He loved all of the characters as they reminded him of himself and his friends. The book was about two witches who had to overcome the magic world falling apart. Their bond grew to the point where they knew they were meant for each other.
Sirius felt like the main girl. She was definitely emo, though Sirius sees himself as more punk-rock. They both had mysterious pasts with families who hated them. This girl was really freaken good at magic. Her name was Risna. Both of them were raging homosexuals. Sirius truly vibed with Risna, she was a great character.
He could only imagine Remus relating to the awkward indiecore girl. In the book whenever she didn't know what to do she'd smile awkwardly and do finger guns, which is something Remus has started to do. She was often quiet but she was just as powerful as Risna. Her name was Sam. Sam was very smart, and often came up with homerun strategies.
It was pretty clear to Sirius that the main male, Austin was Lily. It almost seemed like Lily wrote the character, and Remus just wrote him in. He was kind and thoughtful of others to the extent of pushing them into what he knows would be best for them. He was bright and responsible. James made it in. He was Tara. Tara was enthusiastic, passionate, and a tad arrogant. Tara falls in love with Austin, but he pretty much ignores it.
Sirius was so happy reading the book. The dynamic characters Remus wrote were wonderful. Sirius also likes the plot. Risna meets Sam while both are trying to make the same change in the magic world. Many others were taking their magic for granted. Risna and Sam had to remind everyone how important it is not to abuse the power they had. While they are doing it all the two girls start to fall for each other. Sirius just thinks this is so cute.
"James, James, James, James!" Sirius called, walking into the kitchen.
"I know, I know, the book is a masterpiece and you're so in love with Remus." James said, putting his dish in the sink.
"I mean that's what I was thinking, but I was going to ask if we can get pizza tonight."
"No, just, I don't know, hang out with Remus or something." James responded looking up from the sink.
"What, why not?" Asked Sirius.
"No real reason, I, as the master of love I am, just think it'd be good for you and Remus to go to dinner."
"He's probably busy." Sirius looked at the clock on the microwave. "He just started working at the coffee shop."
"I'm sure his shift is almost over, go pay him a visit." James insisted.
"Fine, I'll go just give me a minute." Sirius walked to his room, then came out with Remus' book.
"See ya later!" James yelled.
"Yeah, bye James." Sirius replied, stepping out the door.
Sirius was there, at the coffee shop. He was anxious, what if Remus wasn't about to finish with work? Did his hair look ok? Sirius didn't check it before he left. He finally opened the door and stepped into the shop.
"Sirius?" Remus was at the counter about to take off his apron.
"Hey," Sirius smiled.
"What are you doing here?" Remus asked, approaching Sirius.
Sirius held out the book. "Just wondering if I could get an autograph, Mr. Author."
Remus laughed lightly. "Mhm, now the real reason you're here?"
"Would you want to go to the pizza place not too far from here?"
"I…"
