"I know someone in the lab who can process a DNA test for us right now. He said that he can run the test in about 20 minutes." Carly looked extremely proud of herself as she hung up the phone.

"How in the world did you manage that?" Jake asked, astonished at what his friend had been able to pull off.

"It really didn't take much, I just called in a favor. Plus, since records for Jason Morgan and Jake Doe are already in the database, he said that he should be able to just compare markers in the two.

"What is this favor going to cost me?" Jake asked suspiciously.

"It's not going to cost you anything. Dr. Shepard runs the GH lab and he just so happens to frequent the Metro Court. I told him that he can use the president's suite one weekend a month for the next year…as long as its not being used by a diplomat. He agreed to run the test personally."

"Is this even legal?" Jake said in a concerned tone.

"Does it matter? Look Jason…. Jake…." Carly paused for a moment. "I'm doing this as much for myself as I am for you. You deserve to know the truth about who you are, so do Sam and Danny. I don't want to wait any longer than we have to. You should go see Sam. I'll call you when I get news."

"No, Patrick is up there with her. We exchanged some words as I was leaving. I want to give them sometime and hopefully he'll be gone once I get back." Jason stared off in thought for a moment. What if he could prove that he is Jason Morgan? What would happen with Sam and Patrick? Would it even matter? He wasn't sure what his relationship with Sam would be if it were true.

"You know that he doesn't stand a chance right." Carly spoke softly as she put her hand on his shoulder, bringing him back to the present.

"What? Who?" Jake asked as he tried to remember what was said last.

"Patrick." She responded simply. "She cares for him, but she could never love him the way she loves you. I have no doubt that she will always choose you."

"Let's not get ahead of ourselves Carly. First, we have to find out if I am actually Jason Morgan. Then I can think about who chooses who. Besides, I don't have Jason Morgan's memories. Sam and I are friends, I can't just become her husband again because of a DNA test. The woman she is today loves Patrick, and the man I am today loves…" he trailed off.

"First off, no matter what the test shows you can't even think that you love that lying little…" Carly censored herself. "Even if you aren't Jason, and for the record I feel in my heart that you are. That little tramp knew who you were and lied to you for a year! You have to kick her out of your life. She's lucky I don't…"

"Look, Carly." Jake stopped his friend from threating violence against the nurse. "I am definitely upset with Elizabeth, but I have to give her a chance to explain. What Hayden said might not be the full story."

Carly let out a loud sigh. "I'm not even going to dignify that with a response. Whether your name is Jake or Jason, you are my friend, and so help me as long as I live and breath I will make sure that she is no longer a part of your life."

"Carly…" Jake said in a warning tone.

"Jason…" Carly mocked. "Anyway, back to Sam. I'm not blind and you're not stupid. We both know that you have been slowly gravitating towards Sam since you woke up in this hospital. You think I haven't noticed how you stare at her when you she talks, or how you go out of your way to speak to her and make sure she is okay whenever you see her?"

"What are you talking about?" Jake tried to sound like there was no truth to what Carly was saying, but there was. The past few weeks had been full of stolen glances and feelings that he couldn't quite explain. That's not even including the times that Sam and/or Danny had made an appearance in his dreams. There was definitely something there, he just couldn't quite name it.

Carly's phone rang and she quickly answered. "Dr. Shepard. Yes, thank you. I can't tell you how much we appreciate this. Yes, we're up on the sixth floor, we'll be right down." Carly motioned toward the elevator, and Jake quickly pushed the down button. His stomach was in knots.

Jason stopped with his hand on Sam's door and looked up at his best friend. Tears were streaming down her face and had been since they received the results nearly 10 minutes ago. His world was speeding and moving in slow motion at the same time. He needed time to process things, but he also needed to tell Sam the truth. He didn't have memories of their life together, but finally he could recognize that the feelings had been there all along. They were buried deep in his subconscious and dulled by time and distance, but they were there. Something in him had always known that Sam was important to him, even if he hadn't always known that she was once the love of his life.

"What are you waiting for?" Carly nodded toward the door. "You have to go tell her…. No expectations, don't worry about what happens next. You have to tell her the truth now. The two of you will figure out the rest together."

He knew that she was right. No matter what, Sam had to be a part of the next steps in this journey. He took a deep breath and opened the door. Sam was sitting up in the hospital bed. Their eyes met as he walked in.

"I'm glad you are awake. How are you feeling." He quickly made his way over to the bed and grabbed her hand. She looked up at him with the same brown eyes he had come to know, but there was something different behind them this time.

"I... I'm fine…. Carly what are you... What's wrong?" Sam paused as her heart monitor began to beep faster. She stared at his best friend who looked as if the very ground beneath her was shaking.

"Sam." He cut in. This news was burning a hole through him, and he didn't know how much longer he could wait before his nerve was lost.

" I know I shouldn't do this now, you are still recovering. But it can't wait. I just got some news, and we need to talk."

She stared back at him, and even though it was impossible he knew that she knew. He saw a flicker of love behind her eyes that was too familiar. They probably only sat there for about 10 seconds, but it felt as though minutes had passed.

"Sam." Jason spoke and caressed her hand gently, drawing her attention back to him.

Tears welled in her eyes as she blurted out, "Jason?"

He could hear Carly sobbing in the background and the tears began to run down's Sam's face. "It can't be you can it? Jason, is it you?"

He looked at her in awe at her revelation. "How did you …" His words were cut off by her kiss. His body involuntarily reacted as he leaned into her lips and placed his hand in her hair. The feeling of her tears on his face brought him back into the moment, and she quickly pulled back. Pain was clear on her face, but he couldn't tell if it was from of the injury or the moment that had just passed. They sat in silence, as if they were the only two people in the world.

"I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have done that." She mumbled.

Jason didn't know what to say. The part of him that felt like he was still Jake Doe knew that they were not the Jason and Sam Morgan that she remembered. The part of him that believed that he was in fact Jason Morgan knew that even without his memories this felt right.

"Am I right? Is that what you were going to say? Did you come to tell me that you are Jason?" the words came rambling out quickly.

"Uh, yeah." Jason responded, still at a loss for words. "Carly helped me get a DNA test." He slowly pulled the paper out from his pocket and handed it to her. His brain still trying to process the last few minutes. "How did you know that? You couldn't have known?"

"You've always known, haven't you?" Carly spoke reminding them that she was still there. She left the doorway and walked to Sam's side, opposite Jason. "I think we both knew all along. We couldn't see it from the outside, but we felt it on the inside." She grabbed Sam's hand and the two women shared a moment as the tears streamed down their faces.

Sam studied the paper and read the lines that showed the DNA of Jake Doe and Jason Morgan to be a 100% match. "How is this even possible?" she sniffed looking between Carly and Jason.

Carly spoke up first, while wiping the tears from her own face. "Why don't I leave you two to talk through all of the details? When you're ready, give me a call. I can go pick up your beautiful boy and bring him here to see you." She made her way out the door and closed it behind her.

"Danny…." Jake said softly as he realized that there was even more to think about. "Danny's my son." He looked up at Sam and smiled.

She smiled back with watery eyes. "He's the one that really knew this whole time. He's been drawn to you since the moment he saw you laying in that hospital bed." Her heart warmed with thoughts of her little boy…. their little boy.

"I need to know how this happened. How is it even possible? How did you find out? Where have you been? What happened to you? Did your memories come back? Do you remember us?" Sam asked frantically.

Jason heard the beeps on the heart monitor speed up again. "Relax." He smiled and lovingly stroked her arm. " I don't want you to get worked up, you just had surgery this morning." He them moved his hands to wrap around both of hers.

"I don't know any more about my life than I did this morning, except my name. I don't have any memories as Jason Morgan." He watched her chest deflate as she withdrew her hands from his and placed them in her lap. She was disappointed, maybe even a little hurt.

"But you kissed me back. You didn't remember anything?" she said weakly. Unshed tears began to pool in her eyes again. She suddenly looked down and stared at her clasped hands.

He gently reached for her face and turned it toward him. "I have to be honest with you. There is too much going on for us not to be honest with each other. I don't think it works like that. No, I don't have any memories of being Jason Morgan. It may take a long time for me to regain my memories, if I ever do. But I believe that I am Jason Morgan, and not just because of the test results. I am here with you and I will always be here for you and Danny, but I can't just walk back you're your life after so much time as passed and just act like I'm still your husband."

A fresh wave of tears rolled down Sam's face and Jason's heart broke. He wanted to wrap her in his arms and promise that everything would be alright, but he never wanted to make a promise to Sam that he couldn't keep. He had done that once before when he disappeared from her life as Jason, and that had led them here. He remembered the things she had said to Jake Doe, and Jason never wanted to be the cause of that kind of pain again.

He grabbed her hand again and brought it to his mouth for a gentle kiss. "Look Sam, I think we both know that our connection has been building for a while now. You have been kind to me from the moment I woke in this hospital. You've been a friend to me and never once asked for anything in even helped me get a job." He smiled.

"I also know that when those shots rang out in the garage yesterday, my first instinct was to protect you. When I saw that you had been shot…" His voice wavered as a vision of her limp body flashed in his mind. "I don't know where this news puts us Sam, but I know that you and Danny are meant to be a part of my life. The rest we can figure out together."

"You're right. So much time has passed. Even if you did remember being Jason, so much has changed. I'm not the same person I was four years ago and neither are you. I'm with Patrick now and you're with Elizabeth."

Jason couldn't stop his muscles from tensing at the mention of the nurse's name.

A look of concern washed over Sam's face. "What's wrong? Did something happen to Elizabeth?"

Jason slid back from Sam's bed and stood up. "I meant what I said earlier. You and Danny are an important part of my life from this day forward. Even if I never get my memories back I want to share my life with you, whatever that means."

"Thank you, that means a lot. I want you in our lives too, but what does that have to do with why you tensed up when I mentioned Elizabeth?" Sam replied with a fierce look in her eyes.

"Sam, I'm going to tell you how I found out who I am, but I need you to stay calm. Can you do that."

"Just tell me, Jason." She replied firmly, her eyes locked on to his.

He felt a sense of pride about her fierce focus, but he was also a bit nervous about what she would do next. "Sam." Jason sat back down and moved closer. "Seriously, I need you to stay calm and trust that I will handle Elizabeth. Can you do that?" Concern was clear on his face.

"This back and forth is not helping me stay calm. Why don't you start talking, then we'll go from there." The determination on her face let him know that she was preparing for a fight.

"Elizabeth knew who I was. She's known for a while now."

The room fell silent for a moment as Sam stared back at him. Jason watched as her usually warm brown eyes grew dark and cold. Before he realized it, she had thrown back her covers and was positioning her body to get off the bed.
