Sacrifice

Levi paced the kitchen, glancing back at his phone every few minutes. His black hair stuck up in odd places from running his fingers through it over and over again. He was really starting to worry. Eren was supposed to be home nearly a half an hour earlier. He was never late, at least not without letting Levi know first. To top it off, it had begun pouring rain about an hour earlier and didn't look like it would be letting up any time soon. Thunder rumbled and the power flickered occasionally with the lightning.

Biting his thumb nail, Levi walked to the front window to look out at the sheets of rain falling from the sky. The storm was getting worse, sending water cascading through the streets, overflowing from the gutters, the storm drains too small to keep up with a storm this big. Levi just thanked every god he could think of that the wind wasn't blowing on top of everything.

Levi went back to the kitchen to check his phone. Still nothing from Eren. He picked up the device and clicked on Eren's picture. He held it to his ear, but for the eighth time, Eren's phone went straight to voicemail. Levi huffed and went back to his pacing.

A few minutes later, Levi heard the front door open and he rushed around the corner to see Eren standing in the doorway, completely soaked and dripping rain water in the entry. "Eren. Thank goodness you're here. Where the hell have you been? Why are you so wet?" After a quick scan of Eren's body, he asked "where's your shoe?"

Eren looked down at his one foot that had only a sock on it. He looked back up at Levi. "The giant mud puddle down the road demanded a sacrifice."

"Okay, but why were you walking in the rain? Where's your car? And why didn't you call me?"

Eren held up his phone, the screen black and also soaking wet. "I dropped it in a puddle. My car broke down half way here, and I got out of the car to pop the hood and check the engine, determined I couldn't fix it enough to get it running, so I pulled out my phone to call you and AAA, but it slipped out of my hand and went into a big puddle. So, after I sat in my car for a few minutes and no one else drove by, I figured I should just start walking and hope someone would stop to give me a ride at some point. No one did, so I walked all the way here in the pouring rain. I accidentally stepped in a giant mud puddle, and like I said, it demanded a sacrifice, being my shoe. I couldn't get it out, so I just kept going."

Eren finished his story and Levi watched as he wrapped his arms around himself and shivered. "Okay, you goof. Strip. You can't walk through the house in those wet clothes. Then go take a shower and I'll make some hot cocoa for when you get out. We need to get you warmed up, or you'll catch a cold."

Eren nodded and started stripping down to his boxers, handing Levi his clothes as he did. Levi gestured for the boxers too, so Eren rolled his eyes, pulled them off, and handed them over. "You just wanted to see me naked." Eren said, his teeth chattering.

"No, I want to wash them. Now take that cute butt up to our room and get a shower going before you freeze to death." Eren walked past Levi and ran up the stairs, but not before Levi could get a slap in on Eren's naked butt.

Levi went the opposite direction, headed for the laundry room, smiling and sighing in relief. Eren was okay. An idiot, but he was okay, and that was the most important thing.
