The Gerudo desert was the same as always: dry, burning hot, and as lonely as a faraway island. Link stood near the tiny lake in Kara Kara Bazaar, his sad blue eyes studying his misty reflection in the water as the wind fiddled with his hair. The sky was dark and grey, the sands floating around in the breeze, matching the young knight's mood perfectly.
Merchants and salesmen marched around him hurriedly, shouts and laughs filling the air as they freely ignored the Hylian dressed in blue, his face a total mask of disappointment in himself. Ugh, he couldn't stop thinking of last night…
"What a letdown."
Link shuddered upon the memory. Why can't he stop making those mistakes?! He keeps hurting the princess no matter how hard he tries. Didn't the king assign him with this role? Is he not meant to protect her at all?
A soft sigh was heard from the knight. And now, yet again, the princess have decided to go on her own towards the West, seeking for travelers to interview more about the areas nearby. Link felt miserable, depressed even—just how many times will she ditch him, again and again?
As Link lifted his head to study the slowly falling sun in the distance, a blur or red and black caught his distinctive Hylian eyes. Immediately he felt his nerves tighten up: Red and black? Never a good color against the typical, intelligent blue of the Sheikah and the beautiful white of the Hylians. Link felt his hands reach for his sword instinctively and his feet start to move towards the direction of the thing — just what was that?
Another flash. This time, Link caught it right and clear: a Yiga assassin. Wait—And headed straight to the West…that's exactly where Zelda went to! Link felt all of his nervous system explode as he realized this fact, his mind dangerously close to having a panic attack. ZELDA! His brain was suddenly shouting in agony, screeching for his legs to move and his hands to function.
And then before he knew it, he was sprinting as fast as he could after the Yiga assassin, his footsteps quiet and soundless in the sand after so many years of practice. But the betrayer was fast - she was jumping, skipping, teleporting from place to place, making Link's soon to be overwhelmed blue eyes run all over the place, trying not to lose the sight of her.
The Yiga was soon hiding behind one of the rare trees in the desert, and Link could feel her lethal stare despite her masked face. He dived behind a dune and kept his eyes deadly glued on the assassin. The princess was just up ahead, her head bowed down as she studied the Sheikah Slate curiously. The sight of her being so unaware irritated Link: he almost didn't resist shouting out at her to run away or to take shelter immediately.
Step. At the sudden sound, a smirk sneaked up onto Link's face; She made a mistake. Zelda's sharp Hylian ears snapped up as she lifted her head in alert, those eyes automatically scanning the area around her. The Yiga's body tensed as she slid deeper into the shade of the palm tree - but its white-and-red body was still too obvious against the yellow sand.
"Who's there?!" Zelda's terrified voice almost broke Link's heart into gripped the tilt of his sword tightly as the Yiga froze, her body unmoving and silent in the heat of the Gerudo.
Then, in a flash of colors, the Yiga charged after Zelda at such a fast speed that Link didn't realize she was gone until a moment later. The princess let out a scared scream and charged off into the distance, her royal shoes carrying her much faster than Link anticipated. Coming back to his senses due to that air-reaping scream, Link's eyes widened as he studied the empty space next to the palm tree. Immediately he found his legs flying towards the direction of the West, all of his muscles screaming for him to catch up, to kill, and to save her.
A horrified gasp escaped Zelda as two more Yiga assassins jumped in front of her, blocking her way. Seeing this almost set Link in a hurried fire: he willed his legs to move, willed those feet to hit the sand harder and harder, no, he can't reach her fast enough, they are going to kill her, they are gonna murder her and tear her to shreds and Ganon will take over the world—
Zelda was now on her knees, her chest heaving heavily as her head snapped from side to side, her beautiful green eyes screaming in horror. All of a sudden, it was as if everything had disappeared: all Link knew, all he ever knew, was to get to Zelda, immediately. All he could hear were his footsteps: loud and clear, thumping and drumming against the hot sand. The Yiga was lifting her sickle as if in slow motion: slowly, slowly, rising it up, its razor sharp blade shining in the blazing hot sunlight. No…no…NO!
His sword almost moved on its own, slashing hard across the Yiga's body and sending her sickle flying up high into the air fiercely. With a subtle thud the betrayer fell onto the ground, suddenly as lifeless as the palm tree she had hid behind just a moment ago. Link felt himself sprinting in front of the princess, his sword drawn and his hand raised protectively before her. He had never felt so much determination burn through him before, like screaming fire and raging winds: If they even thinkabout touching her…
He shifted his weight, eyeing to two Yiga in front dangerously. The two backed off a bit, fear on their expressionless faces: well, I must have managed that glare perfectly. He felt himself thinking with joy, but it was immediately eliminated into pieces as he noticed the panicked gasps behind him - is he…scaring her?
He took a step forward, threatening the two to back off, not wanting to terrify the princess even more by killing in front of her. The two Yiga assassins took a few frightened steps away from him and vanished into the air with a red poof, leaving the atmosphere quiet and silent, as if nothing had happened.
Seeing no more danger around them, Link sheathed his sword and turned back at the princess, concern burning his insides. She seemed fine, no injuries, just a few pieces of dirt on her blue accessories.
Unaware of the hope showing on his face, Link leaned down slightly and offered Zelda a hand. The Princess was trembling, whether in fear or shock, he didn't know, but all he wanted to do, seeing her like this, was to wrap her in a tight hug and tell her that everything is going to be okay.
"I-" Zelda gasped, staring at the knight before her with large eyes, "I, th-thank you, Link."
He felt his cheeks heat up rapidly as those warm hands touched his, so soft, so familiar and so smooth. Hiding his face behind his hair, he gently pulled the princess up, trying to be as gentlemen-like as he could, backing off the minute Zelda gained her balance.
The princess studied him with beautiful green eyes, a cracked smile on her lips. "I—Sir Link, I—" She stumbled over her words, fiddling with her gloved hands awkwardly. Oh, great, I'm making her uncomfortable now. "Thank you, Link, that was—that was appreciated. Thank you for saving me." Her voice was warm, sending a gust of comfort down his body like a hot spring in the middle of the winter.
Feeling his eyes widen at those words, Link looked up to see Zelda grinning at him, her cheeks mysteriously red. His heart was suddenly beating out of his chest, pounding against his ribs rapidly, making him seriously doubt that Zelda couldn't hear it freaking out inside. Oh, goddesses, she's—she's so close! Link took a quick step back, his aqua eyes darting all over the place almost automatically.
"Link?" Zelda questioned. The concern in her voice…his heart could barely take it.
Unable to stop himself, Link looked up at the princess and felt his muscles moving on their own — he gave her a huge grin, flustering his insides and making his inner self scream in denial. However, much to his shock and pleasure, Zelda smiled back, igniting his heart and melting his emotions into pieces.
Her laughter, soon to be joined with his, lit up the entire Gerudo desert.

I finally got over this memory eeeeeee
I love the ending so much. I just. I can't. I love the ending so much. Self esteem 10000.
Seriously though. Zelda honestly blushed in this memory - and how could you say that she wasn't falling in love with a straight face at this point.
I hope you enjoyed the chapter!
Please have a great day, and stay safe!
Update: I'm sorry for not updating in time. It has been a very bizarre week for me (don't worry, it's just work, not anything that serious ;p), and I didn't finish the next chapter in time. Now I've fallen sick with a severe pain to my head, and I find no strength in finishing the story - in short, please just expect the next chapter by this Friday. I really apologize for this, and I hope for your patience and understanding. Thank you!
