The pouring rain raged the Hyrule fields wildly as the sound of raindrops pierced Link's ears. The sky was gloomy, dark, and gray, not a single sign of life visible on its skin, giving a sad and disappointing mood. Was the goddess unhappy again? Link found himself wondering with concern.
He swung the Master Sword around skillfully under a huge, sky-reaching tree, rainwater getting splashed onto his tunic from time to time, but he didn't really mind. Link thought this would be a proficient use of his time: after all, he did miss his morning training today due to the travels with the princess. Didn't the ancients say "practice makes perfect"? And why shouldn't he just take the chance and practice more for the upcoming fight with Ganon?
He tried to imagine monsters in front of him, getting sliced into monstrous pieces and exploding black dust with his sword. Those damned monsters—always—hurting them— with a shout he brought his sword down, hitting the grassy ground beneath him loudly. The rain was almost deafening to his ears, blocking out all the sounds around Link perfectly as he tried to get absorbed completely into his training. A spin attack…air attack..and why not try a lunge when he's at it? Someone—Zelda—was talking behind him, it seems, but the Master Sword was alive in his hands again, speaking to him, telling him how to swing it correctly, how to wield it correctly…
"…knight, as well." A few of Zelda's words managed to sneak into Link's ears. Well, it seems that he has changed his mind now. Her melodious voice immediately tore away all of his motivation to train; and now he just wanted to sit next to her, under the tree, and talk all about themselves. He brought the sword to his chest and exhaled deeply, ending his training at that.
"Your commitment to the training necessary to fulfill your goal is truly admirable. I see now why you would be the chosen one." Wait…was she…complimenting him? Link found his eyes trailing automatically to the princess sitting behind him, her tone somewhat soft and sugarcoated. He suddenly felt himself flush violently at this genuine compliment — how could he not? He let out a squeaky little cough and raised his sword in front of him for cover, making sure his face would be unseen by the princess at this angle.
Silence suddenly etched out between the two, Link still studying his sword in front of him. The blue edges, soft silky texture underneath his skin that is the tilt - everything about this seemed just so familiar, as if he had been using this for as long as he could remember. Every time he lands his eyes on this beautifully-crafted sword, familiarity and a sense of home would fill up every part of him, warming his insides and giving him an urge to fight. Such a magnificent relic…
"What if…" Zelda's words again made themselves into Link's elf ears, "One day…" Link turned towards the princess in respect, dropping his sword by his sides. The woe in her voice sounded uncomfortably painful, making him grimace at the seriousness of the situation.
"You realize that you just weren't meant to be a fighter." Zelda was looking down, her sparkling green eyes shining with sorrow and the rain falling through her words. "Yet the only thing people ever said…was that you were born into a family of the royal guard, and so no matter what you thought, you had to become a knight." Link felt his eyes trace to the ground at the statement. It's true, by all means: his father had started his training before he was even able to speak his first words in Hylian. Sometimes he did wonder how different his life would be if his father wasn't the leader of the guards; how much he would change if he wasn't chosen by this sword he now holds in his hands.
"I wonder, then…" Zelda's voice was barely any louder than a whisper, her eyes casted down and her hands clasped together tightly, "Would you have chosen different path?"
And so that silence was back again, eerie and comforting at the same time despite the rain raging loudly behind them. Link found himself studying the princes silently, his eyes unable to leave that gracefully-crafted face of hers. He knew, of course, that this conversation isn't about him at all; it was all about her, and he didn't really mind, if at all.
Link felt his jaw clench. The king is giving Zelda way too much pressure, too much for her to grasp, too much for her to take. She was just a child, just a simple girl who wants to dedicate her life doing research. And, honestly…what's wrong with that? Why does she have to be forced to do something she isn't meant to?
Well, not exactly that. Zelda was the princess, the reincarnation of the goddess, after all; it really would be her destiny to awaken her power against the Calamity. But still — if she doesn't like it, then how can she possibly awaken it? If the king could just stop pressuring her, she might actually have a chance of awakening it…
And even if Zelda fails to do so, Link would always be there. If it's to make her happy, if it's to save her and the ones she loves…Link would be willing to defeat the Calamity single-handedly.
Zelda's small chuckle cut off his line of thoughts. "My apologies, Link, that was unnecessary." She gave him a small smile, sadness still visible in her eyes. When she began her next sentence, her head was bowed low again. "Please, get back to your training if it's needed."
Giving her an understanding nod, Link slowly turned against her again, raising the Master Sword in front of him. A worried sigh was heard from the princess behind him, stabbing Link's insides with guilt that he didn't comfort her. Just when will I be able to give her happiness…He wondered to himself solemnly as he began the spin the sword around again, the sound of rain drowning out the princess's cries behind him.
NEXT UPDATE: December/13th
A/N: I thought it was incredibly cute how Link just turns around at the sound of Zelda complimenting him haha
Also I'm kinda disappointed in Age of Calamity but that's off topic (Nintendo: Look, I can split the timeline. Also Nintendo: WANT TO SEE ME DO IT AGAIN)
Well anyway, happy holiday season, dears!
I hope you stay safe and have enjoyed this chapter~
