Connors kept her eyes steady on the road and Reid looked out the window. The air was thick with tension. At the same moment "I'm sorry I-" echoed through the car. They both looked at each other and Charlotte gave a small nervous laugh. Reid took her expression in. She was always demure and quiet around the rest of the team, but with him she was so direct and intense she felt like fire. He wondered who the real Charlotte was and which one was her mask. "You first." He offered. She gave a faint smile and turned her eyes back to the road. "I'm sorry I gave you a hard time earlier. You're right. I don't know if I'm good enough to be here. You're so smart and you know what you're doing and I guess that just pisses me off." He looked at her up and down, apprising if she was genuine. He decided she was, but he didn't know how to respond. He still wasn't keen to accept her apology. She glanced back at him for a moment before turning back towards the road. "Ok then, your turn."br /He paused for a moment, recalling what he felt bad for. He wanted to apologize for what he had said to her, how he had snapped at her, how her told her to give it all up. But he didn't. Instead he looked back out the window and said "I'm sorry I went through your notebook." She paused for a moment, and then lightened her tone. "It's the result that counts right? I'm just glad you're going with me. I really think we can find something here. I've been in enough training classes and read enough books on interviews but I've never done a real one before." Spencer just kept looking out the window, watching the trees pass /Her smile faded away and a wrinkle began on her forehead. "So, when you were looking through my book, did you find anything else?" She ventured. He thought about lying, pretending he had never seen the picture and granting her privacy, but he knew she would see through /"Yeah. I found a picture of a little kid. Patrick right?" Her eyes grew soft. "Yeah." He thought back to how exuberantly she had enthused about her niece. Now she would barely acknowledge the little boy in the photo. He knew what that /They sat in silence for the rest of the drive, only the sound of tires on pavement and the humming of the engine to break the crushing quiet they /The tires ground to a halt as they pulled into the center of the small town. They were met by a young man wearing a deep frown. As the pair walked up to him they pulled out their badges. "I'm Doctor Reid and this is Agent Connors. We would like to speak to you about-" "we have no interest in speaking to you or any other officer. Unless you have a warrant please leave our land and don't come back." Spencer put his dark sunglasses on to shield his aching face from the hot sun. "All we want is to ask you a few questions and then we will go." He said. Keeping cool and professional. "You will go now. You are not welcome here. We do not know anything about the body that was placed on our land. It was not one of us. Our people are not capable of such an atrocity." Connors looked around, noticing a teenage boy, listening very closely. Reid continued. "We have two dead men and another man missing. Please help us find him before it's too late and give answers to the victims families."br /The man uncrossed his arms. "I sympathies with these families, but we have no answers for you here." The boy glanced away for a moment and then looked back at her. "Alo." He looked away again. "Someone else is missing now?" She nodded her head. "We were wondering if you or anyone else here could offer a reason as to why one of the victims was found on your land. It would really help us." He squinted in the sun and shook his head. "I really don't know. But the grown ups really don't tell me much." He glances over to the man arguing with Reid. "My dad says I need to focus on my studies, and leave the big issues to the council." Charlotte cocked her head to the side. "What are you studying?" He let out a small sigh. My grandfather is our tribes shaman. I'm his apprentice." Charlotte bit her lip. "Let me ask you Alo, have you learned anything about solanine?" "Yeah actually. We use it to help relax the lungs and help people breathe." Charlotte nodded. "Do you teach anyone outside of the village these medicines?" "No, my dad banned outsiders after someone tried to use our medicines to hurt others a long time ago. I was still a baby. My dad doesn't trust them anymore." Charlotte reached out her hand and shook the boys hand. "Thank you, you really helped." She noted, pulling out of the reservation. He scowled at her. "Am i the only one that wants to catch these unsubs?" She drummed her fingers on the steering wheel and quirked her lips. "Do you really think that's true? The rest of us are just here to kill time? Take in the sights?" He buckled his seatbelt and stared out the window. "No, I don't." He let out with a defeated sigh. "But I don't know why we drove out here just to turn around." She turned onto the highway as she spoke. "While you were busy puffing up your chest, I talked to the shamens apprentice. He told me outsiders have been banned for years because a local that was invited onto the property to study natural medicine used what he had learned to poison someone else. How much you want to bet it was Solanine?" Spencer turned his head to look at her. "Really? Who was it?" She let out a sigh. "That I don't know. He was just a baby when this happened. I wanted to ask his father, who had banned this person, but I diddnt get the chance." "Why not?" She glanced at him with a side eye. "You were already talking to him." Spencer looked down at his fidgeting hands. "Right... I'm sorry." Charlotte turned her eyes back to the road and sighed. "You want to help these victims and their families right?" He nodded solemnly. "I do. The most awful thing in the world just happened to these families. At the very least they deserve answers." Charlotte kept her eyes steady, and her voice grew firm. "The best way to do that is to work with your team. I need to work on that and so do you. Maybe we can try being better together. He looked up at her and gave her a smile. "I'll try."br /After they got back the headquarters, Spencer went back into the back room to look over the case files to see if he had missed anything. Charlotte glanced up to see Rossi walking in to talk to Reid while she heard the metallic ring of her cellphone. "Speak baby blue eyes!" Commanded the woman on the other end.
