Chapter 14: Beginning of Something More
She woke up later that night to Daryl tossing and turning in his bed. Sitting up as quietly as possible, and being mindful that Remy was laying down at the foot of the small twin bed. Kagome got out of the bed quietly and made her way to where Daryl was.
She must not of been as quiet as she thought because he had one midnight blue eye cracked open and looking at her. She gave him a small smile. "Sorry, you were tossing and turning a lot and I got worried. Are you alright?"
Opening his other eye. He sat up slowly. "Yeah, I'm fine. It's just hard getting comfortable with these bruises on my sides and my head wound." He wasn't about to tell her that he was having a bad dream about his brother. He moved over when she sat next to him.
"I'm still sorry about that..." Kagome said as she looked down at her feet.
Daryl shrugged. "It's alright. Besides, It was worth it since we found Sophia's doll."
Nodding slightly, Kagome looked from her feet to Daryl's gunshot wound. She noticed that the bandages needed to be changed.
She got an idea.
"Hey Daryl."
He raised an eyebrow at her. "Hmm?"
She raised her hands to start unwrapping his bandages. "Let me do something, ok?" She asked quietly. When he didn't pull away, she finished unwrapping the gauze, and moved some of his dirty blonde hair to look at his wound.
It wasn't that bad, it really was fortunate that Andrea was a terrible shot.
However, it wasn't pretty either. She could make out small sections along the four inch long wound where she could actually see his skull.
She would have to fix that.
"Do you trust me Daryl?"
Surprised by her serious question, he turned his midnight blue's to look at her better. She had a serious look on her face. One he knew too well, she was going to do something, and few things were going to stop her. Could he trust her though? There were very few people that he actually could say he trusted, and he used that term lightly.
However...
In the short time he knew her, she gave him no reason not to trust her, granted she did keep her past a secret, but everyone had their secrets and her's was a pretty big one. He doubted she would do anything to harm him intentionally anyway.
When she started fiddling with her fingers, he left out a breath and nodded. "Yes."
He really hoped he wasn't making a mistake by trusting her. Glancing at her out of the corner of his eye, he held back the urge to smile at the look on her face. Her eye's were sparkling like a kid in a candy store and she had a huge grin on her face.
Lifting her hands to his wound again, she looked at him in his eye's. "This might feel... weird, its normal though."
At his nod, she continued. Closing her eye's and concentrating, she slowly pulled the familiar feel of her miko ki from within her. When she felt it at her finger tips, she opened her eyes again to see them glowing a soft blue. She held them right above his wound and watched as it slowly mended itself closed.
The sudden burst of warmth that ran through him startled him. He wanted to move away from her touch, but he said he trusted her. Glancing out of the corner of his eye, he saw the look of concentration on her face, followed by the soft glow of her fingers. His eye's widened, he never thought something like this was even possible. He could feel his gunshot wound healing itself, the pain was nearly gone, his muscles were feeling better also.
He didn't even notice that he leaned into the feel of her warmth. Suddenly he felt like the weight of everything that had happened the last several months was just a dream. It was like a weight had been lifted off of his chest.
She made him feel safe, he couldn't even remember the last time he had such a feeling wash over him. He was sure he never had before. Not even his brother made him feel this safe.
When she pulled away and the warmth disappeared, he frowned. It didn't last nearly long enough. He didn't even know when he closed his eye's, when he was about to open them, he felt her fingers running through his hair.
He almost melted, almost.
She startled him when she started speaking as she daubed new ointment on what was left of the wound and then wrapped fresh gauze over his head. "I didn't heal the whole thing, most of it though, I made sure that you wouldn't get an infection and it won't really bleed anymore. I could of healed it the the whole way, but if I did, it would be too suspicious. I also lessened the bruising you had on your ribs and sides."
Slowly opening his eye, it took a moment for them to fully focus before he looked at her. "You didn't have to do... that."
The smile that she gave him dazzled him. "I know, however I felt like I owed you, after what I put you through yesterday." She explained.
Daryl nodded, he was going to say something when a thought struck him. He asked before he could stop himself. "Can you do that to yourself?"
Leaning back and putting most of her weight on her hands, Kagome blew out a breath that moved her bangs, she noticed how long they were getting. "I can, however I normally don't do that to myself because I heal faster than normal people do anyway. It would raise too much suspicion if I had a serious injury like a broken arm or something and it be completely healed in two days. Its bad enough if someone notices that my arrow wound will be healed by the end of the week."
"Makes sense. Are all priestesses able to do that?"
"No most can't, Souta might be able to heal small wounds with more practice. He started showing his powers about a year ago. He won't be as powerful as me though." She explained.
He nodded again, she really was one of a kind. "Who else knows?" He asked.
"Just Souta and Wade, and Wade only knows because of an ah, incident that happened a little over a month ago." She replied sheepishly.
He wasn't all that surprised that Wade knew, he seemed really close to Kagome and more level headed than Greg. "And that incident would be?"
She blushed and looked away from him, finding the wall very interesting. "Umm... Well, we stayed in this liquor store in Bowling Green, Kentucky for a few days and found a stash of Vodka, Moonshine, and Bourbon. I.. kind of got drunk and spilled the beans to him." She murmured, her blush intensified.
Daryl snorted trying to hold back a laugh. "You're a lightweight, huh?"
Glaring at him, Kagome nudged him with her shoulder. "I am not a lightweight, I'll let you know. I had about fifteen shots before that happened." She then grumbled something about how demon sake was more potent.
He laughed then. "Fifteen is not that much."
She huffed and stood up, her cheeks still dusted a light pink, she was glad the only light in the room was from the moonlight coming through the window. "It's a lot to me mister. Now I think it is time for us to get back to sleep, it's going to be a long day." She said as she made her way back to her bed.
She wanted to laugh at Remy, he was completely stretched out on the small bed, his massive body almost took up the whole bed. His head was hanging off the side, one golden eye was looking at her like there was nothing wrong. "Silly dog."
"You know, you could always lay in bed with me. Might be a little cramped though." He wasn't sure what compelled him to say it, but her reaction was totally worth it.
Whipping around, Kagome stared at Daryl in shocked, did he really just say that!?
His smug look said it all.
Oh... that little turd!
Crossing her arms over her chest, she continued to glare at him. "You wish, buddy. Go to sleep, alone." She hissed before she turned back around and walked to the window instead. Ignoring Daryl's soft chuckles.
A movement caught her attention and she looked down to see Glenn walking towards the barn with a blanket in his hands. His aura radiating anxiousness and excitement. Raising an eyebrow, she looked towards the barn.
She kept getting a weird feeling from it. She didn't really notice it before, but the longer she was here, the more the feeling intensified.
She was really hoping it wasn't anything serious and that she was just worrying over nothing.
Shrugging her shoulders, she turned back to her bed to see that Remy had moved back to the end and giving her a look like he was waiting on her to lay down with him. His massive tail did one lazy wag and flopped back on the bed.
Smiling, she pulled back the covers and laid down, glancing at Daryl, she saw that he was already laying down and seemed to be asleep.
"Night Daryl."
"Night Kagome."
