So, 10,000 words guys. Hopefully, this satisfies your needs until the next chapter. I am in loooove with this chapter and can't wait to write more. I would like to mention that I am writing this story as I go, pretty much trying to follow the events of canon and also throwing in my own scenes. So that is no grand master plan as to how this is going to end, yet.

Also-I won't promise that all future chapters will be this long or longer-it really just depends on where my writing takes me. And to think I thought 3000 words was a lot. Man, I've come a long way already.

Anywho, if yall have any questions or find any mistakes, please feel free to PM me :D

update: I have fixed a few minor spelling/grammar mistakes in this chapter.

Signing off, Cherry is typing...

"I'm here to talk."

Naruto stated, his yellow eyes with frog-like slits now stared up at the red-haired man. The man was sat on a throne of machinery, his body was merely skin and bones. Next to him stood the other Atkatsuki member that had attacked the village.

"So the man of peace has stumbled upon me." The red-haired man spoke, his voice low and almost inaudible.

Naruto's mind flashed back to all the people who had been killed or hurt by the man in front of him. Jiraiya-sensei...Kakashi-sensei...Sakura-chan.

"Do you hate me?" The man said calmly.

"Do you wish to seek revenge?" He spoke again.

Naruto held his fist clenched to his sides, his teeth grinding, his eyes unblinking.

'The selfish desire of wanting to maintain peace causes wars, and hatred is born to protect love.'

Naruto's fathers' words rang in his head.

"Nothing in this world will change if you kill Nagato and seek your revenge. It will all only be for your own selfish desire." The purple-haired girl now spoke up, a lot more clearly than the red-haired man named Nagato.

'To be a ninja is to confront hatred. Jiraiya-sama entrusted you to find a way to end this hatred, and so am I, Naruto.' He remembered his fathers' words once again.

Naruto's lip began to quiver, his body shook. The anger within him was fighting to erupt.

"If you could not find the answer to peace, then sacrifice yourself for my world of peace that I will create." The purple-rimmed eyes stared into his yellow slits.

Suddenly from Nagato's throne of machinery, a thick black rod shot out to attack Naruto. The rod impaled Naruto's bare stomach. A drop of blood dripped to the floor. Naruto raised his head, his eyes going from yellow to red, the slits in his eyes becoming a cross. His anger rose, and the belly of the beast erupted. Pungent red chakra leaked out again, this time a mere phantom of the fox's image roaring into existence. The terrifying image surrounded itself around Nagato, instilling fear into the red-haired man.

"What's wrong, Nagato?!" Konan asked, not being able to see what Nagato had.

Ignoring the concerned women, his thoughts sounded in his head. 'He purposely didn't move...'

Naruto was slightly bent over, the rod still impaled in his open stomach. Shakingly, he spoke.

"I came here to talk, but also to confirm something." Naruto growled, his canines expanding.

"Confirm...something?" Nagato asked, his own eyes wide in surprise of the young boy in front of him.

"I wanted to confirm my own feelings. If I stood before my enemy, what would I do?" Naruto's nails grew slightly larger, grabbing the rod he began to yank it out of his body, allowing the fox's chakra to heal the hole it made.

"And...?" Nagato pressured on.

"And even now, I still want to kill you so bad..." Naruto spoke through clenched teeth, his canines becoming even sharper.

Naruto dashed forward, his eyes a fiery mix of red as he lowered his body and went in for a punch to Nagato's gut. Konan jumped in front of Nagato, her arms spread wide in a protective manner.

As Naruto dashed forward, Jiraiya sensei's face flashed again in his head, and Naruto skidded to a stop in front of the Atkatsuki woman.

Naruto calmed down slightly as he stood in front of the pair.

"Ero-sennin believed that there would be a day where people could get along..." Naruto spoke, his voice shaky.

"He entrusted me to find the answer. Thinking back, I finally understand what Ero-sennin was talking about...that it's not so simple." Naruto finished, his hand relaxing into an open palm.

"That doesn't change the fact that you can't forgive me." Nagato's weak voice spoke.

"Jiraiya believed in something from an era long before shinobi. Didn't you say you would kill me and bring peace to the ninja world?" He finished.

Naruto shut his eyes tight. His head dropped down, and his sage mode vanished from his eyes along with the red hue. His eyes returned to their regular blue.

"You are not a God. After experiencing reality, do you really believe in Jiraiya-sensei's pretty words?" Nagato questioned the boy in front of him. Naruto now stood tall, his eyes sharp and in focus.

"...When I found out you were Jiraiya's student, I wanted to ask you one thing." Naruto spoke, his brows frowned.

"What is it?" Nagato replied.

"How could Ero-sennin's student turn out like this? I understand that you're not like the other Akatsuki members, that you don't kill for fun. But, I don't know a thing about you guys. That's why I want to hear your stories, then I will give my answer." Naruto finished looking at both the man and women in front of him.

"Very well." Nagato nodded. Opening his mouth just enough to speak, he began a long tail of a story starting during the third great shinobi war.

"Long ago during the great shinobi war, smaller nations like the Hidden Rain were left struggling to survive. Both my parents were killed by leaf shinobi in my own home, and that was my first pain. After they were gone, I had no choice but to leave my home in order to survive, and that's when I met Konan and Yahiko." Nagato explained slowly.

"The three of us were inseparable." Konan peached in, a sad smile on her face.

"Then one day we encountered the legendary sannin, and Jiraiya-sensei decided to stay with us. He raised us, feed us, and taught us many valuable skills on survival like hunting and fishing. But then, an incident happened..." Konan trailed off.

"A lingering shinobi attached Yahiko, and I, with my rinnegan, attacked him. My body moved on its own and before I knew it, the man was dead." Nagato continued.

"After the incident, Jiraiya sensei started to teach us the basics of taijutsu and ninjutsu." Konan popcorned off Nagato.

"I believe it was because Jiraiya had discovered my rinnegan was a special ability and wanted to help me learn to control it. I was devastated after killing that man, the guilt swallowed me whole. It was Jiraiya sensei that dug me out of that hole, saying I only did what I did to protect the ones I love. He taught me that knowing pain helps you to better understand kindness and that you must reflect on pain to come up with your own answer. But when I asked Jiraiya about peace, he never had an answer." Nagato looked straight into the big blue eyes below him.

"Just like you don't have an answer." Pain spoke to Naruto.

Naruto's eyes dropped. He said nothing.

"Jiraiya had told me a story about a monk called the sage of six paths, a monk who created what we now call ninjutsu. The sage, who also possessed the rinnegan, had created ninjutsu in hope of peace and order. Now I believe that Jiraiya thought I was the reincarnation of that monk. So he entrusted me with the quest for peace, then left us." Nagato finished.

Konan looked directly at Naruto.

"Yahiko became the leader of a group we created that saught out peace without violence. Our group had become so large that Hanzo, the leader of the Hidden Rain, could no longer ignore us. He asked us to negotiate terms with the great nations, and we took that offer of peace." Konan continued.

"But, we were naive. Because of that deal, Yahiko died." Nagato spoke, almost inaudible.

He continued, "Hanzo laid a trap with a man named Danzo from the Hidden Leaf. When we arrived at the negotiation grounds, we were ambushed by both sides, Hanzo and Danzo's men. Hanzo was afraid our group had gained too much power, and Danzo wanted to stirrup trouble for the seat of Hokage. Hanzo held Konan captive, then threw a Kunai towards me. Telling me that if I don't kill our leader, Yahiko, that he would kill Konan. So I was faced with an impossible choice. Kill Yahiko with my own hands, or let Konan be killed by Hanzo. I knew then that whatever choice I made, we all would not survive." Nagato coughed, his body was beginning to feel weaker.

"After Nagato picked up the Kunai, Yahiko threw himself on it without hesitation...he sacrificed himself, for us..." Konan spoke, now becoming teary-eyed.

"The pain enveloped me, and I used a powerful Jutsu called Gedo that attacked everyone persistent, instantly taking the lives of all the ninja before me." Nagato voiced.

"I realized then, that my longing for peace was useless. Yahiko's death was my second pain. Since that day, countless comrades continued to die, day after day. The hidden leaf preaches peace even though they contribute to war. The peace you great nations possess is only because of the pain we smaller nations endure. To us, your peace means our violence. Just by living, people hurt others without even realizing it. That's why true peace cannot exist in this cursed world. Jiraiya-sensei's words were just wishful thinking." Nagato paused, taking a breath.

"I have told you our story, so let me hear your answer." Nagato finished, looking almost desperately at the blonde boy, waiting for his answer.

...

The fifth Hokage had gathered around all the able-bodied leaf shinobi and prepared to make an announcement.

Tsunade announced that the deceased, which included Kakashi-sensei and her loyal friend and assistant Shizune, were all laid out on the far side of the village end. Far out in the distance laid a line of lifeless bodies. It took a lot of manpower to gather everyone from within the mountains of rubble but Tsundae took this as priority out of everything, out of respect for the fallen shinobi of the leaf.

Everyone's moods dropped at the announcement. Most tearing up at the thought of their friends and sensei's.

Gai in particular now stood still, the usual gleam in his eyes gone, the pain of losing his lifelong rival becoming unbearable. Sakura was simply looked down to her feet like everyone else, tears forming. There was a quiet moment of sniffs and hiccups as the shinobi took the time to mourn. A few moments later, Tenten broke the silence.

"Neji!" She exclaimed, waving her hand at her friend as he made his way with Shikamaru who lagged behind slightly.

Neji quickened his pass standing beside the girl. The brown-haired girl wiped away tears as she patted him down, checking if he was okay, causing a slight blush to adorn the usually stoic face.

Shikamaru watched the group and thought to himself.

'Aw man...why do I have to be the messenger telling everyone they need to sit still and wait.' Shikamaru stuffed his hands a little deeper in his pockets.

Shikamaru began to relay the news that Naruto was back to his senses and that he planned to take on the real Pain on his own.

"He cannot fight Pain alone! He is in no condition to do this by himself, we must give him our support!" Lee had exclaimed, his bandaged fist clenched tight and large eyes ablaze.

Hinata pinched in, "That's right. We need to go help Naruto-kun!" Hinata moved so she was standing beside Lee, her left leg bent in a limp from a prior injury.

Lee offered a supporting arm and she gracefully accepted the help, shooting Lee a small smile. He gulped slightly but quickly turned his attention back to Shikamaru who spoke.

"Trust me, I tried to tell him that. But he said this is something he needs to do alone and to believe in him." Shikamaru finished, looking towards the crowd that had gathered.

There was a few seconds of silence before Tenten again broke it.

"I believe in Naruto!" Tenten spoke up.

"I believe in Naruto, too!" Kiba now said, Akamaru barking in agreeance from the side of his owner's leg.

"Me too!" Ino added, who now was checking Shikamaru's body for injuries in the same manner Tenten did with Neji.

"And me!" Choji peached in.

Soon a crowd of people began joining in on the cheer.

"In that case, me t-" Shino was quickly interrupted.

"THE POWER OF YOUTH!" Gai sensei erupted in a powerful show of emotion and tears. Lee quickly following, but being careful not to move as Hinata leaned on him for support.

Tsunade smiled as she watched the crowd become lively. Naruto always had that effect on people.

Sakura stood alone, slightly away from the group. She donned a small smile as well as she watched them shout one after another that they believed in her teammate.

"Alright, enough! I want those who are able-bodied to start helping the villagers exit from the bunkers from behind my face." Tsunade spoke as she pointed towards the carvings of the Hokages in the cliffside.

"With this new development, I will inform our people of what has happened, and we will prepare to welcome Naruto back once he has finished with Pain." Tsunade spoke as if Pain's defeat was only a matter of time, also deciding to believe in Naruto.

"We also need to start setting up a base outside with tents, and gathering food and water, understood?!"

"YES, TSUNADE-SAMA!" Everyone said in unison. The ninja dispersed, getting to work on the reconstruction of society.

...

'My answer...' Naruto thought, a sad look on his face as nothing came to mind but his previous sensei's faces.

Naruto pulled out a small book for his waistband marked "Tales of a Gusty Ninja." Naruto held the book in his hand, bringing the attention of the room to him.

"I get where you're coming from now. But I still...can't forgive you. I still hate you." Naruto spoke in a low voice, his anger still showing as he held the book in front of him. His eyes closed shut.

"So, you want to settle this?" Nagato asked.

"However" Naruto quickly followed, "Ero-sennin believed in me, so I'm going to believe in his belief. That's why I won't kill you guys."

Both Nagato and Konan seemed taken aback by the young boys' decision.

"You'll believe in what Jiraiya-sensei believed? I see. So that's your answer." Nagato looked directly at the young boy as he spoke.

"So you expect us to wait whiles you turn the world around? Don't joke, it's far too late for me to believe Jiraiya's words! Peace cannot exist in this cursed world!" Nagato used what strength he had in his vocal cords to shout.

"Then...I will break that curse. If there is such a thing as peace, I will seize it, dattebayo! I will never give up!" Naruto spoke with confidence, his eyes unwavering as he looked at the red-haired man.

Nagato gasped, taken aback.

"Those words..." Nagato trailed off.

"What's wrong, Nagato?" Konan asked, looking to her only friend.

"I've said those same words, long ago...back when I fought for peace." Nagato finished.

"That's right. Those words are straight from this book, that Ero-sennin wrote. He was seriously trying to change the world with this. At the end of the book, he wrote about a student that inspired him. It was you, Nagato."

Nagato stared wide-eyed at the book in Naruto's hand. He was shaken to his core, had Jiraiya believed in him this whole time?

"And the name of the hero in the book...is Naruto!" Naruto pointed at himself with his thumb using his free hand, his facial expression determined and unwavering.

Nagato began to soften his expression. A glimmer of hope started to shine in his eyes. He was really beginning to believe in the boy.

"My name is a precious keepsake from my master, so I need to live up to that name. I will become Hokage, and bring peace to the Hidden Rain! Please, believe in me!" Naruto finished, his face serious.

"How can you be so sure, how do you know you won't ever change that resolve?" Nagato questioned.

Naruto thought back to his childhood. He thought of his messy but empty apartment where he slept alone every night. He thought of all the times he went hungry with nothing but spoiled milk in his fridge. He thought of the looks of the villager's faces as they shouted at him to go away like it was a nuisance that he even dared to exist. He thought of how his classmate's parents would usher their children away from him. He thought of all the times he sat alone on the swing outside the academy, watching as his classmates were hugged and adorned by their parents. He thought of how alone he felt throughout his childhood, and how much he hoped for anyone to look his way. He thought about how he longed to be accepted, to be liked, to be loved by anyone for so long. He thought of the fight he had with Sasuke before he left the village for good. He thought of the time he lost control of the Kyuubi, only to find out he had hurt Sakura-chan afterward. He thought of Asuma-sensei's death, right after they had become close during training. He thought of Gaara, and how it broke him to see another jinchuriki be treated the same way he had been treated. He thought of when he sat on a bench outside the convenience store, a popsicle meant for two in his hand, but Jiraiya wasn't there to share it with him. He thought of his parents, and how he was robbed of a family since the day of his birth. He thought of all the times he would think, 'wouldn't everyone be happier if I were gone?'

"Because, I know pain too." Naruto spoke in a low voice, his hand slightly clenching his bare chest as if his heart was going to burst at any moment.

"I don't know what pain lies ahead of me...but if I stop believing, then this book will change into a different story...and then it won't be Naruto." He said as he held the book in front of him, his other hand dropping back down to his side.

Nagato continued to watch the boy. Konan felt tears welling up inside of her again.

"I can't write novels like my master, that's why the sequel needs to be how I live my life. No matter how great the pain, I'll continue on, because that's who Naruto is!" Naruto finished in a loud raspy shout.

"You...you are a curious fellow. You remind me of myself when I was young. I wasn't able to believe in Jiraiya, or myself. However, I have a feeling unlike me, you will walk a different path."

Nagato began to remove his skeletal body from the machinery it was enveloped in.

"Nagato...!" Konan exclaimed in concern.

"I think I will believe in you, Naruto Uzumaki." Nagato finished as he put his now free hands into a ram sign in front of his chest.

"Gedo Art of Rinne Birth Jutsu." He spoke.

"NAGATO! DON'T!" Konan yelled.

"Konan, it's okay. I am making a new decision."

"What?! What the hell is going on?!" Naruto asked in confusion.

"Those who possess the rinnegan are able to manipulate the jutsu of all six Pains that are said to exist outside the realms of life and death. Nagato's ocular power controls life and death. He is the seventh Pain." Konan explained.

Naruto looked up at the man who held his hands together, Nagato was shaking like a wet dog. Naruto was still confused as to what was happening.

'If he continues like this with his current chakra levels, he won't survive...' Konan thought frowning. The tears in her eyes glistened.

'He's willing to go this far, for this child.' She thought as she looked at Naruto's bright blue eyes that seemed to radiant hope.

...

Meanwhile, near the village, a large structure of a face rose from the ground opening up a large mouth that expelled shots of chakra towards the deceased bodies of the village.

Everyone stopped what they were doing, ninja and villager alike, as they watched the streams of bright chakra rise into the air and descend towards the lifeless bodies lined up near the back of the dust hole of Konoha.

Most of the ninja nearby ran towards the bodies, watching in awe as they started to stir.

"ZOMBIES, THEIR ZOMBIES!" Lee exclaimed and soon after received a slap to the back of his head by Tenten.

Sakura also jogged over, watching as her sensei began to stir.

'Naruto...what did you do?' Sakura thought. As more bodies stood, people began to run forward, hugging their deceased friends, brothers, sisters, husbands, and wives.

Sakura kept her eyes on her sensei, but moved back in surprise when Choji came hurling past her, hugging Kakashi as he rose.

"Kakashi-sensei...I'm sorry, for me, for me you- and now, you can't even rest in peace..." Choji was balling his eyes out, clearly thinking Kakashi was now a zombie as Lee had exclaimed.

Kakashi seemed to snap out of the haze he was in and looked at Choji who was now endlessly wiping away his stream of tears.

"Um...Kakashi-sensei...why are you staring at me like that. Are you going to eat me?! I know I look like this but too much meat isn't good for you..." Choji sniffed. Sakura deflated as she overheard the conversation, wanting to facepalm herself.

"Ah...Choji, I am pretty hungry." Kakashi smiled devilishly from beneath his mask. Choji backed away slowly.

Kakashi began to laugh. Sakura looked on wide-eyed. Kakashi sensei was really back.

Spotting Sakura, Kakashi waved.

Sakura blinked away a few tears and walked towards her sensei. Without a word, she wrapped her arms around her sensei's body. Kakashi patted her head, still smiling he spoke.

"I'm sorry I worried you." He said gently.

Sakura let go slightly and looked up at the masked man.

"Naruto did it, Kakashi-sensei."

Kakashi simply nodded.

"Kakashi-sensei..." Choji was still balling.

"Choji, cheer up. I'm fine, and I won't eat you. Actually, I got the chance to clear up some misunderstandings, so don't worry about it, okay?"

Choji tilted his head in confusion but let it go as he was just happy to see him and everyone alive and well.

"Kakashi-san...I'm glad you're okay." A brown-haired woman walked up to Kakashi. She wore a simple white blouse with short sleeves that was tucked into a mid-thigh dark green skirt. She had a white bandana in her hair but her bangs shaped her face nicely. Behind her was a familiar figure, Teuchi, who had been serving him ramen since he was a child.

"Ayame-chan." Kakashi said in surprise. The slightly younger girl smiled warmly at him. Kakashi blushed slightly.

"We can't afford to lose your business, Kakashi-san! You do always bring Naruto with you nowadays." Teuchi laughed heartedly. Teuchi looked between his daughter and Kakashi and silently got the message.

"Well, Ayame. I'll leave you to it, I need to go check up on my other best customers after all." He laughed from his belly again, dragging Choji away with an arm around one of his best customers.

Sakura stood next to Kakashi, having seen the interaction, she looked up at her sensei and winked, moving along as well.

Kakashi rubbed the back of his head as he looked at one of the few people who had actually seen his bare face.

"Uhm...sorry to have caused you trouble." Kakashi spoke softly, bowing slightly in respect.

"I-I'm just glad your okay, Kakashi-san. I hope once the village has been rebuilt, I can see you eat ramen aga-I mean I hope you come have some ramen again at our shop." The girl stuttered slightly as she finished her sentence, starting to turn a bright red.

Kakashi's eyes widen slightly and his face also started to turn a light pink.

In the background, Lee and Gai could both be seen balling. Gai and Lee finally calmed down slightly and also joined in.

"Kakashi, you have the power of youth I see! As expected of my greatest rival!" Gai grinned with his blindingly bright smile, giving Kakashi a big slap on the back. Lee was nodding in agreeance. This caused the two to blush even harder.

A little ways away, Tsunade was lecturing Shizune for daring to leave her to run as Hokage by herself. The two women sharing a heartfelt hug afterward.

The whole village was in tears of joy as they hugged and kissed their loved ones.

After Tsunade had finished her reunion with her best friend, she stood back from the crowd and whistled loudly, grabbing the attention of the people. Thousands of people gathered in front of her. Before she began to speak, a familiar man flickered into existence beside her.

Annoyed, Tsunade turned to her right to look at the brown-haired man.

"Yamato, your quite late."

Yamato's sweat dropped from the side of his head.

"My apologies...Lady Tsunade-sama." Yamato looked at the huge crowd of people who were awaiting the Hokage speech. Using his wood-style Jutsu, he created a taller platform with a set of stairs that flowed down the front. Tsunade was now more visible to the entire village, and Yamato jumped off, reappearing in the crowd as he watched as well.

Tsunade cleared her throat and used a bit of chakra to help amplify her voice.

"PEOPLE OF KONOHA!" She began, "We have all suffered, but the suffering is no more. We may have lost our homes and our treasured positions, but we have not lost what is most important. Each other." A roar of cheers spread across the sea of people.

Tsunade smiled, raising her hand in an effort to calm down the cheers as she continued.

"I am not the one you should be cheering for. There is only one young man who we have to thank, and his name is Uzumaki Naruto!" She finished and the crowd roared again.

Smiling, Tsundae finished her speech with one last thing.

"So, let us give him a warm welcome. Everyone, head to the front gates!" Even though the gates were no longer standing, everyone walked on through the rubble, preparing themselves to give Naruto a large warm welcome.

Sakura turned to her side to look if Kakashi-sensei was back but found a swollen-eyed Choji beside her instead. Looking at him in confusion, she asked him,

"Where did Kakashi-sensei go?"

"I don't know, last I saw he was talking to Gai-sensei and Ayame-chan from the Ichiraku Ramen shop."

Sakura frowned, not sure where Kakashi would go off to in a time like this. She ignored the thought as she figured he knew what he was doing, where ever he went.

Further up in the sea of people Lee and Kiba both helped Hinata move forward with her injured leg. Lee could sense some bad vibes emanating off of Kiba. He ignored the death glare and looked down at the girl that had an arm around his shoulder as she walked. Noticing the stare, Hinata looked up and smiled, forcing Lee to blush heavily and look away.

"Are you okay, Lee-san. Your quite red..." Hinata asked in her usual gentle tone.

"Yeah, why don't you lay back a bit, I can help Hinata." Kiba basically growled towards the green-suited boy in annoyance.

"I'm f-f-fine." Lee stuttered.

"Ah, the power of youth." Gai piped in out of nowhere.

Somewhere else in the crowd, Tenten was sticking closely to Neji.

"Tenten...aren't you a little close?" Neji stated, his eyes closed, a slight blush on his face.

Tenten simply grinned and wrapped an arm around his as they walked, leaning her head on him.

"Nope! I'm fine right here." Tenten spoke confidently, not at all shy to show her motives. Although she did have a light pink on her face as well.

Ino watched the pair that was in front of her, and turned to her left to look up at Shikamaru who walked next to her. Shikamaru had also turned his head slightly, looking down at Ino with one slightly opened eye. They made eye contact and both blushed heavily, looking away from each other fast.

Shikamaru slipped a hand out of his pocket, the back of it brushing the back of Ino's hand as they swayed back and forth naturally. Ino looked down at their hands as they touched gently and smiled. She held on to his last two fingers, the pinky and the ring finger, using her entire hand. Shikamaru said nothing, continuing to look in the other direction, the blush on his face turning from pink to red.

Ino looked at the man's ear and cheek that was visible and laughed to herself.

Somehow, the vibe of the crowd had become rather romantic. Everyone had become grateful for the people in their lives, perhaps being reminded that life is unpredictable and can end at any moment.

As they neared the front of the village, most of Naruto's closest friends and sensei's pushed to the front of the crowd, waiting in anticipation for their hero.

Sakura felt her heart beating hard as she looked into the forest for an orange-suited man. She clenched her fist to her chest, trying to calm down her beating heart. Sakura was so focused she didn't even notice Ino sneaking up on her. The light blonde girl elbowed her pink-haired friend. Startled, Sakura snapped her attention towards her side.

Ino gave Sakura a sly look.

"Someone looks excited." She said teasingly. Sakura blushed lightly but quickly noticed Ino's far hand still holding on to Shikamaru's fingers. Shikamaru was turned away, talking to Neji who still had Tenten lingering on his arm.

Sakura returned the sly look and elbowed her friend in return, motioning towards the fingers she held onto.

Ino just laughed, "You gotta' get em' whiles your young and beautiful, or you'll end up all alone." She winked at her friend.

Sakura smiled and nodded, actually taking her friend's usually silly boy advice to heart.

"Yeah, you're right." Sakura said whiles she stared ahead, slightly more serious than Ino had expected.

'Wow, what's gotten into her?' Ino thought.

...

Nagato's body looked like nothing but a skeleton now. He opened his mouth ever so slightly.

"You may try to find meaning in death, but there is nothing but pain. And pain does not heal, we just coupe and become dull to it. That's what war is. Naruto...this is what you will be facing in time. Regarding that book and you, it seems as if someone had set it up, or maybe it's the work of God after all. I have done what I can to help, but now it seems my time ends here. I believe you can bring peace to this cursed world, Naruto." Nagato finished, smiling with what facial muscles he had left.

"Konan, you were always such a kind girl, I hope you find a new path to follow as well." Nagato breathed his last words towards the girl who now had a few tears slipping out of her eyes.

The paper tree they stood in slowly started coming apart, sheet by sheet, letting rays of sunshine in. Konan used her paper Jutsu to cover Nagato's body, sealing it away.

Konan and Naruto travelled in silence towards where the sixth pain, Yahiko's body, lied. When they arrived, she enveloped Yahiko's body as well.

"You're taking them with you." Naruto asked, looking down at the paper-covered bodies.

"Yes, this pain was made from Yahiko's body. They are both precious to me." Konan explained.

'So this was Yahiko...' Naruto thought.

"So, what are you going to do now? I'd hate to think you're going back to the Akatsuki." Naruto asked.

"Yahiko and Nagato meant everything to me. If both their dreams have been passed on to you, and Nagato believed in you, so will I. We, the Hidden Rain, will join your quest for peace." Konan finished with a sad smile.

Naruto gave Konan a serious look. "The name Naruto, the guts to never give up, that's what I inherited from my sensei and sibling discipline." He finished, hoping that his words made an impact on the woman.

Konan created a bouquet of flowers using her paper Jutsu, walking forward she handed it to Naruto.

"I pray you will be the blossom of hope that never wilts." She said, the smallest of a smile on her face.

Naruto took the bouquet of white paper flowers, giving Konan a big grin, returning to his usual happy-go-lucky self.

"Naruto, I'd like to give you one more piece of advice before we part." Konan smiled gently at the boy.

"Yeah, sure, what is it?" The boy smiled back.

"If there is someone in your life that you deeply care about but they have strayed onto the path of darkness, don't give up on them. I now see that maybe blindly following Nagato's path of destruction wasn't what I truly wanted..." Konan trailed off.

"But instead of regretting the past, I will look forward to the future you will create." Konan looked at the bright blue eyes.

"And if there is a special woman in your life, tell her how you feel before it's too late..." She finished, looking at the paper body that used to be Yahiko.

Naruto nodded, the images of his head mixed with both of his teammates for team seven.

The two parted ways. Naruto made his way to Jiraiya's grave he had made himself deep within the forest before Konoha. He placed the bouquet of paper flowers next to it, clapping his hands together in a short prayer. Naruto stretched and started jogging towards Konoha.

As Naruto started the journey back to the village his mind was filled with mixed thoughts and emotions. He thought of the people back at Konoha, his friends, Nagato sacrificing himself to save everyone he had just killed. Konan, where she would go and what she would do. If it was even safe for her out there when the other Atkatsuki members find out she has betrayed them. As he jumped from branch to branch his vision began to blur, missing a step he fell towards the ground but quickly rotated himself mid-air to land on his feet. Naruto landed on the patchy grass of the forest. He leaned against a tree, trying his best to correct his vision. A heavy wave of fatigue passed over him. Naruto pushed forward, taking small steps towards Konoha. He was almost completely exhausted at this point, and nothing but pure determination to confirm that everyone was okay fueled him. Looking forward again, his vision blurred once more and started to tilt towards the ground. He felt his eyes close and his body slowly going down.

Instead of being hit with a cold dirt ground, however, he found himself on a familiar back.

"Kakashi-sensei..." Naruto smiled softly as his head rested on Kakashi's wide shoulder.

Kakashi glanced to the side of where the blonde hair was coming from.

"Oh, Naruto. Long time no see. Why don't you get some well-deserved rest, I'll take it from here." Kakashi said as if it was just another regular day.

Naruto nodded his head ever so slightly as Kakashi-sensei went from a crouch to standing, holding on to the back of Naruto's knees as he took step towards the Hidden Leaf.

'He's gotten heavier' Kakashi thought.

"Wait...Kakashi-sensei..."

"Hmm?" Kakashi followed in a questioning tone.

Naruto let out a snore.

'Ah, he was sleep talking...'

"How's Sakura-chan..." Naruto muttered, followed by another loud snore and 'Rasengann!'

Kakashi laughed softly at the sleep-talking boy but still answered him.

"She's just fine, and so is everyone else."

'Thanks to you.' Kakashi added in his head.

Naruto's unconscious self smiled, and he started to fall into a deeper sleep. Only the occasional snore sounding from the boy's mouth as Kakashi walked.

Nearing the village Kakashi could see the beginning of a large sea of people awaiting their hero's arrival. Once in view, he nudged Naruto off his back, helping him stand up. Naruto yawned, stretching his hands above his head as he bent backward into a long stretch.

"Ahhh, I feel refreshed now," Naruto said with new found energy.

Kakashi smiled at the boys' quick recovery rate. They walked together towards the opening of the tree lines, and Naruto's eyes widen as the whole village came into view. The village erupted in a deafening roar of cheers, he was only able to catch a few words at a time.

"You did it, Naruto!"

"Naruto-niichan is the best!"

"I won't lose to you next time!"

"Are you okay, Naruto?!"

Naruto was bombarded with an onslaught of cheers and questions. His eyes were wide and his mouth slightly open in shock the entire time. Then, he finally began to smile. A crowd of people surrounded him as he rubbed the back of his head.

Kakashi watched from the background, leaning on a tree that stood on the edge of the forest. Kakashi thought back to when Naruto was a much smaller boy.

'I'm gonna' become the Hokage, so strong that the whole village will have no choice but to recognize me!'

'Well, Naruto, you've already surpassed me and Jiraiya-san. It's only a matter of time now.' Kakashi thought.

Naruto calmed down from the initial attack of people and started to scan the crowd for his pink-haired friend. Finally, he spotted a dot of pink in the sea of browns and blacks. Waving in her direction, Naruto called out.

"SAKURA-CHAN!" He yelled with a huge goofy grin laid on his face.

People started to part like the red sea, giving Naruto and Sakura the chance to see each other in full.

Naruto sighed in relief at the sight of her. She looked much better than the last image he had of her in his head. In fact, she looked even prettier than usual, he thought.

Sakura walked forward towards Naruto, with no particular expression on her face. As she neared him, she dropped her gaze so that her face shadowed slightly. Standing right in front of her teammate, she pulled her fist back, nailing Naruto on the head. As she hit him she yelled,

"Reckless idiot!"

Naruto bent forward from the knock on the head. Sakura caught him in her arms as he fell forward, and brought him up into a tight hug. Sakura placed one gentle hand on Naruto's neck, the other wrapped around his back.

Naruto stood with his hands dropped to his side, knees slightly bent to accommodate the shorter girl. His eyes were wide, he dared not to move and ruin the precious moment.

The people surrounding them also stared in silence, a look of shock on their faces at the out-of-character move made by Sakura. Even Kakashi could be seen in the background wide-eyed.

"Thank you, Naruto." She whispered into his ear. She felt a few tears escape from all the built-up emotions that stirred around in her head.

Naruto's brain short-circuited.

After a few seconds, Naruto stuttered,

"S-S-Sakura-chan..."

Sakura snapped back to reality, remembering that basically the entire village had their eyes on them. She placed her hands on Naruto's bare chest and pushed him away from her with an arms length of distance. Sakura's fiery inner self made an appearance within her mind for the first time in a while. 'Damn, his body is rock hard!' She shook the thought out of her head, cursing herself for thinking that way about her teammate.

Naruto had a look of pure bliss on his face now, a deep blush brushed over his face. 'I need to save the village more often...' He thought.

Sakura crossed her arms and turned away slightly from the boy she had just held. Her brows knit down and her eyes closed she spoke loudly.

"A-Anyways, I guess I owe you one now."

"A DATE?!" Naruto yelled back, he started pumping the air and jumping around before she could even respond. She simply laughed and motioned over a few of their friends to come over. His friends from the academy and konohamaru all crowded around Naruto and lifted him into the air, cheering. Sakura took a step back and watched as the boy laughed as he was tossed up and down. She found herself now standing to the side next to Kakashi-sensei.

"He's growing into a fine young man, don't you agree?" Kakashi spoke quietly as he looked as his student was tossed in the air.

Sakura smiled in response.

"I used to think he was just a dumb kid going on and on about becoming Hokage and gaining everyone's respect. But he's been slowly gaining everyone's trust all along." Sakura added.

"He was able to gain Jiraiya-sannin's trust, help bring back Lady Tsunade-sama, create an alliance between the Hidden Sand and Hidden Leaf after bringing Kazekage Gaara back." Kakashi continued.

"I truly believe he will be Hokage one day." The gray-haired man finished.

Sakura nodded slightly.

'I believe he will too, Kakashi-sensei.' Sakura thought.

'And I'll do everything in my power to make sure he gets there, it's a promise of a lifetime, Naruto.' Sakura thought as she looked at her teammate smiling.

Night had begun to fall, and villagers and ninja alike set up various tents to house everyone. Yamato had created as many wooden houses as he could and families filled in sharing the space together. A sense of family had taken over the villagers as everyone had become a lot more thankful and grateful for one another. Women, men, and even the children were doing what they could to help. News of the attack had already spread, reaching the Hidden Sand. The Kazekage Gaara had sent back word to his people that they would do everything in their power to help the Hidden Leaf as they have helped him. As night fell and most people began to reside into a good nights sleep, only a few ninjas were left walking around camp to keep an eye on things.

Naruto and Sakura stood in Lady Tsunade-sama's tent, along with Kakashi-sensei, Shizune, Shikamaru and his dad Shikaku. Lady Tsunade the fifth laid on the tent ground with a thin sheet under her and a slightly thicker one covered her body up until her chin. Her head laid on a small pillow. Shizune sat upright on her legs, tending to Tsundae with a damp towel, rinsing it off, and placing it on her head to help cool down her temperature. The fifth Hokage was knocked out.

"What happened to the old bag? She seemed alright earlier..." Naruto trailed off.

He received an elbow shove for the old bag comment by Sakura who stood next to him.

"She was pushing her limits to the extreme... she's completely exhausted now. She had continued to use Lady Katsuyu to heal everyone even after the rebirth of the fallen..." Shizune said sadly, once again wiping away the sweat from Tsundae's face.

Sakura knelt next to her mentor, using one hand she hovered it above Tsundae's head. Her hand began to glow a greenish-blue hue of chakra.

"She won't be waking up anytime soon..." Sakura trailed off, removing her hand and stepping back to her spot next to Naruto.

"This could be a problem, Danzo will try to jump on this opportunity to take over as Hokage..." Shikaku trailed off.

"How annoying." Both Shikaku and Shikamaru said in unison, which caused the room to look at the father and son duo with a small hint of humor.

"Danzo, I've heard about him before. He's that sneaky old man that keeps trying to go against the old lady, right?" Naruto asked no one in particular.

Shikaku nodded slightly in response.

"Tomorrow there will be a meeting with the feudal lord of the land of fire as to what will happen with the hidden leaf, including the budget for repairs and Lady Tsunade-sama's condition. They will want to have a suitable Hokage to take her place, at least until she is awake and well." Shikaku started.

"And I'm guessing that Danzo will be there and vote himself in for the seat of Hokage." Shikamaru finished, a scowl on his face.

Shikaku nodded in response.

"Take me to that meeting, I'll be the next Hokage, dattebayo!" Naruto yelled enthusiastically, causing Sakura to shush him with a finger to his lips.

Shikaku smiled, "I think it's a little soon for that, Naruto, but don't worry, I'm sure you're time will come."

Shikaku gave a side glance to his son, thinking to himself.

'And it will be your job to be his right-hand man, Shikamaru.'

Naruto crossed his arms and nodded in satisfaction with that answer, for now.

"So, I am going to propose that Hatake Kakashi be the next Hokage." Shikaku stated as he looked at the man who had been listening quietly in the corner the whole time.

"Eh?" Kakashi muttered, his mouth dropping into a frown.

"That's not necessary, I'm sure Lady Tsunade-sama will wake up in no time." Kakashi looked desperately at the woman, begging that she suddenly opened her eyes and rose from her sleeping slumber.

"KAKASHI!" Gai had opened and closed the tent door so quickly a breeze moved everyone's hair to the right.

Gai held a hand behind one of his ears, making it seem even bigger than it was. Grinning, he spoke.

"I couldn't help but over here my rival might become the sixth Hokage." Gai had now squirmed over to Kakashi, placing a firm hand on the man's slumped tired shoulders.

"As expected from my greatest rival Kakashi, I guess you've won this battle but I will win the war!" Gai announced enthusiastically.

"What's higher than the Hokage? I mean the feudal lords are more of a birthright thing..." Shikamaru trailed off, raising an eyebrow at the green-clad man.

Gai's eyebrow twitched at the comment, stunned into speechlessness.

Kakashi began to pinch both of Gai's cheeks far apart as the man was stood in stone, never before not knowing what to say.

Sakura left the tent laughing slightly but also down about Tsundae's condition. Sakura held two large empty water canisters with her. Naruto followed her out of the tent, calling out her name.

"Sakura-chaaan!" He hummed sweetly, grabbing both canisters from her hands.

"I'll come with you." He grinned at her, a slight blush on his face.

Sakura raised an eyebrow but smiled.

"You do know that I'm strong enough to lift you and those water canisters, right?" Sakura said jokingly.

Naruto gave her an out-of-character serious look.

"Sakura-chan, this is a man's job. And you shouldn't waste your chakra like that." He huffed, his nose seemed to grow as he looked satisfied with himself. Sakura simply shrugged and let the boy do his thing. As they walked past the tents of people together they could see a few villagers taking a late-night walk with their boyfriends and husbands, some even had their kids with them as well. Naruto had moved both canisters to one hand so that his free hand laid next to hers. Sakura took a quick glance at the boy beside her. As she looked up at him from the corner of her eyes, she started at his hair. The blonde strands stuck out wildly, his hair was messy but in a cute way. He had his leaf headband loosely around his neck now, giving his forehead a chance to breathe. He still had on his orange and black-suited jumper that was unzipped, and his fishnet t-shirt that was torn down the middle, exposing his bare chest and stomach muscles. She looked down to his legs that were much longer than hers, and his feet that extended out further than her own. Her eyes travelled to his hands that were large enough to comfortably hold both handles of the large water containers in them. She finally looked back up to his face, exclaiming the whiskered marks he's had since childhood. She smiled thinking how well the whisker marks suited his face, giving him a rather cute look. She looked to his pointed nose that framed his face well, and up to his eyes that were a brilliant bright blue. Her eyes even travelled to his jaw which was well defined and sharp.

"U-Uhm, Sakura-chan." Naruto stuttered, Sakura hadn't noticed that Naruto had begun to sweat.

"I-Is there something on my face?" Naruto gulped, his cheeks going red.

Sakura widened her eyes and turned away, not noticing that she had now been fully staring at Naruto up and down, not even trying to hide it anymore.

"S-Sorry, Naruto. I was just deep in thought." She said a little loudly, as to shake herself out of the trance.

As they continued to walk past more and more couples, even spotting a few kissing, the tension between the pair grew. As they reached the forest where the river was just a little ways away, Naruto began to attempt something.

He shakingly began to raise his left hand, so that it now hovered over Sakura's shoulder. Naruto was sweating again, puffing heavily as he attempted to put a sneaky arm around the pink-haired girl.

Sakura was again deep in thought and hadn't noticed this development until a few seconds later. She eyed Naruto's hand from the corner of her left shoulder, which was still hovering. Sakura then eyed Naruto's face, which looked like he made the word 'nervous' come to life. She smiled and let out a small sigh, as she moved closer to Naruto's body, leaning slightly on him as they walked. She used her left hand to move Naruto's hover hand onto her shoulder.

Naruto gulped, internally shouting. 'HELL YEAH!'

"I'm pretty tired and it's a little chilly out, don't go getting a big head, Naruto." Sakura teased.

Naruto nodded vigorously with a large grin, deciding silence was the best answer, not wanting to ruin the moment with a dumb comment.

Finally reaching the river, Sakura took one of the water jugs and they both began to fill them up with the cold river water. When they finished, Naruto made a move to take her canister of water again, but Sakura set it down a little ways away from the wet river. She found a spot of dry grass next to a tree and sat down. Patting the patch of grass next to her, she motioned Naruto to sit beside her.

Naruto could hear his heartbeat as the girl hes' always adorned smiled at him to sit next to her. He put the water canister down next to where she placed hers, then nervously sat in the spot she had patted. Sakura sat with her legs bent under her but her knees to the left. She had her hands in her lap. Nothing but the moon light lit her fair skin. Naruto sat cross legged, each hand on one knee as the nerves got to him slightly. He watched from the corner of his eye as Sakura stared up at the stars above.

"The sky...this world we live in...it's beautiful, isn't it?" Sakura spoke softly, her breath letting out a small puff of warm smoke from the chilly nights air.

Naruto continued to look at the girl from the corner of his eye.

"Yeah, beautiful..." He replied gently. He watched as her pink hair swayed slightly from the faint breeze. He saw Sakura shiver a little and started to remove his black and orange jumper. He swung the jacket around her in one smooth movement, secretly praising himself for the cool move.

"Naruto! I'm fine, and besides..." She trailed off as she looked at him with slightly lustful eyes.

"All your wearing now is a torn shirt, and it's transparent too!" She finished.

Naruto simply smiled with his eyes closed.

"I have the Kyuubi's chakra, Sakura-chan. I'm always warm! But I guess I don't need this anymore." He said as he removed the fishnet shirt so that he was now completely bare on his upper body. Naruto sat more relaxed now as he became more comfortable in the girls presence.

Sakura took the torn piece of fabric from him, looking back down to her hands as she fiddled with the material.

"Naruto, there's something I want to talk to you about, a few things actually." Sakura said quietly.

Naruto looked at Sakura head-on now, tilting his head to the side slightly, he got a little too close as he looked at her in a confused manner.

Sakura turned her head away slightly. 'Why am I so nervous?! This is Naruto I'm next to!' She thought to herself.

"What is it, Sakura-chan?" Naruto asked.

"Well...do you reminder the day Sasuke-kun left, in front of the gates of the village." Sakura started.

Naruto frowned, dropping his head slightly.

"Yeah, I remember. But don't worry Sakura-chan, I'll definitely get him back! It's a promise-"

"of a lifetime." Sakura finished in unison with Naruto, still fiddling with the material in her hands.

Naruto looked at her, slightly confused.

"Naruto, I need to know. Is the reason your still fighting to bring back Sasuke-kun because of that promise you made to me that day?" She now turned her head to look into Naruto's deep blue eyes.

Naruto looked back into the emerald green eyes that enchanted him many times before. He began to shake his head from side to side slightly.

"No, that's not the only reason why I want to bring Sasuke back to the village. It's true that I want to honour that promise to you, Sakura-chan, because that's my ninja way, I never go back on my word, dattebayo." Naruto flashed her a small smile this time. Sakura eyes widen a bit, she felt her heart thump a little louder.

"But also, to me, Sasuke was my first rival. He was the first one to acknowledge me as someone to beat. He slowly became like a brother to me, and I still think I was that to him." Naruto spoke as he looked down at his hands.

Sakura nodded slowly taken in what Naruto had told her. She felt a weight of relief lift off of her. So she wasn't the cause of Naruto's dedication towards bringing Sasuke back, at least not fully.

"But Naruto...Sasuke-kun abanded the village. He's a rouge ninja now, why are you still willing to go after him?" Sakura asked.

Naruto continued to look at his hands. "Earlier, before I came back, I got some advice from Konan, she's the other Akatsuki member that attacked the village..." Naruto explained.

"And besides, don't you want him back too, Sakura-chan?" Sakura felt a slight pang of guilt at the question. Of course she wants him back, but maybe not in the same way she used to. She simply nodded in agreeance to Naruto. Her thoughts jumped back to his previous statement.

"Wait, why would you take her advice, of all people?" Sakura knit her brows downwards, not angry but confused as to why Naruto would bother listening to an Akatsuki member.

"Well...a lot happened, I'll tell you the full story later. But apart of her advice was to not give up on a friend just because they choose a darker path. I think she meant that people who seem most angry at the world are actually the saddest." As he finished he looked up towards the sky, the moonlight hitting his face.

Sakura looked at Naruto's eyes as they shimmered in the reflection of the moon. She didn't expect such a mature answer from the usually dense boy.

Relaxing more at his answer, she laid her head on Naruto's shoulder. He adjusted so that her head fit more comfortably against him. Naruto felt his heartbeat quicken again, the nervousness from earlier coming back.

"So then what was the other part of her advice?" Sakura asked innocently. Naruto thought back to the woman's words.

'if there is a special woman in your life, tell her how you feel before it's too late...' Konan's words rang in his head.

"It's...a secret." Naruto said, a bead of sweat dripping down his forehead.

Sakura huffed slightly but allowed the answer, she had secrets of her own after all.

As she leaned on his warm skin she started to speak again.

"Naruto...when you were out there fighting Pain, before I rushed in, I decided something."

Naruto gulped but swallowed the lump in his throat and asked,

"What's that, S-Sakura-chan?" He stuttered slightly.

'That I would help you become Hokage and achieve your dreams, no matter what.' Sakura thought to herself.

"Well, it's a secret." She looked up at him with her eyes closed, and a sweet smile on her face. Naruto turned red instantly.

"But I will tell you this...It's a promise of a lifetime."

Naruto watched as the girl gracefully stood, still holding onto the piece of fabric tightly. She stepped towards the direction of the village. Turning back so that her face was visible to the boy who still sat in the grass, she spoke.

"Come on! Those water jugs aren't going to carry themselves!" Sakura teased, smiling brightly back at him.

'I think I'm going to have a heart-attack, Sakura-chan' Naruto thought as he stood, the image of her bright smile now engraved into his head. They walked back the same way they came, getting a few head turns as the unlikely pair walked closely together once they returned to the village.

Naruto and Sakura dropped off the water containers inside the fifth Hokages tent. They waved goodbye to each other as they both separated, going to their respective tents. Shizune had arranged the tent occupation so that the girls and boys were sleeping separately, of course.

As Naruto walked towards the boy's tent, he heard a few snores. Inside laid Shikamaru, Choji, and Lee, all sound asleep already. Naruto found his spot in the corner, laying down with his hands behind his head. A goofy grin spread across his face as he thought of the pink-haired girl. 'Was she always this nice and pretty?' He thought. Eventually, his fatigue gave way and he fell into dreamland.

Sakura entered her respective tent where Hinata, Ino, and Tenten were already asleep as well. She took her spot next to Ino in the corner, laying on her side so she faced the back of Ino's head. To her surprised, Ino rolled over, eyes opened.

"Why are you still up?" Sakura asked in a low whisper as to not wake the other girls.

"I saw you and Naruto walk off together, you two took an awfully long time getting back for just two containers of water." Ino smirked. Sakura blushed slightly and turned away from her friend.

"Hey...Sakura-chan, you know, it's okay to move on. I have." Ino whispered to the back of her best friend.

Sakura thought over the words in her head. Move on? Is she talking about moving on from Sasuke-kun? I've already-' She stopped her thought process for a moment. Since when did she move on from Sasuke? She used to do anything to gain his attention...but now, she wasn't even sure who he was anymore.

Sakura rolled over so that she was on her back. Her mind wandered back to the conversation she had with Naruto. Then to his eyes, his nose, his whiskers, his lips...she realized was still holding onto the piece of fabric and decided to shove it under her pillow before Ino noticed.

She shook her head quickly, ridding her mind of any indecent thoughts. Naruto was her teammate, after all!

As if Ino had read her mind, she piped in again.

"Shikamaru is also my teammate." She added in with a smirk.

Sakura becoming annoyed at the fact that her friend kept commenting on her inner mind's thoughts, turned away again.

"I'm going to sleep! Goodnight!" Sakura huffed quietly, hearing only a slight giggled from behind her. Sakura tried her best to shake away her thoughts, allowing her tired mind and body to drift away.
