Hey again my friends! Back again :) This is my Houses Comp round 2 drabble. I'm the Slytherin Astronomy student. I picked the prompt [time of day] early morning for this, and my mind immediately came up with two ideas. I hope you like the idea that I decided on! Lily stood in front of the mirror in the bathroom, and at that moment, she was absolutely terrified. The bathroom light was searing after the darkness of her bedroom. Her bleary eyes betrayed the fear she was attempting to keep inside. How did this happen? she thought to herself. Of course, she wasn't naive. She knew exactly how she had ended up standing in her bathroom staring at a Muggle pregnancy test. And it was positive.
Her first thought, after panicking, was what she should tell James. She had no idea how he would react to the news that they would be parents. Of course, they were engaged, but their wedding was still a couple of months away. What would this do to their relationship?
"Lily?" The younger Evans turned at the voice, finding Petunia standing in the doorway. "What are you doing? It's five in the morning!"
Lily immediately fortified her shields and put her guard up. She'd forgotten that Petunia and Vernon were staying at their parents' while the Dursley house was being painted. It was a definite annoyance, but at least it was only for a few days.
"Couldn't sleep," Lily answered briskly. It was the truth, just not the whole truth. For several years now, Lily and Petunia had been at odds, so she didn't even think about trying to remedy that now of all times. "I could ask the same question of you."
"I was getting a glass of water when I saw the bathroom light on." Petunia eyed Lily suspiciously. The latter had never been good at keeping secrets, but she didn't want Petunia to be the very first person she told. She tried to conceal the pregnancy strip, but Petunia had always been a clever one. As Lily tried to slide past her to return to her room, Petunia grabbed her arm and caught a glimpse of what no one was supposed to see yet.
"Hey!" Lily snatched her hand away but it was too late. Petunia's eyes widened as she realized what was going on. For several moments, the sisters stared at each other, neither sure what they should say. Lily felt her eyes burn as she finally said, "Go ahead then. Tell me that I'm stupid, and whatever else you want to say. I know it's coming."
Petunia remained silent for another moment before saying calmly, "I wasn't going to, Lily."
"No?" Lily retorted, her voice rising. "All you ever do is criticize and make fun of me, so why should now be any different?"
Petunia pursed her lips, as if considering what to do before murmuring, "Lily, any other time, I would gladly take the opportunity, but I'm not stupid. I know how you're feeling, and I would never…"
"Really? How could you know how I'm feeling?"
Petunia's answer came swiftly. "I'm pregnant, too, Lily. I hadn't gotten to tell you yet. I'm a little further along than you are, but I wasn't sure you would care."
It was Lily's turn to be speechless. In the early hours of the morning, the two sisters realized how hurtful they had been to each other.
Lily thought back through the years, every time she came home from Hogwarts with more and more accomplishments, yet another story of her growing abilities as a witch. It surely could not have been easy to grow up with a sibling who didn't only do well in school but visited one Petunia wasn't allowed to even talk about, let alone go to as well. She could tell by Petunia's expression that she was remembering similar things. The years had been difficult to them, and their actions had done nothing but tear them apart.
Lily cleared her throat, a breathy laugh escaping her. "We're a mess, aren't we, Tuney?"
"We sure are, Lils."
It had been years since they'd called each other those nicknames. Maybe they could work things out, in the end.
Maybe they could become true sisters again.
