Special Agent Jennifer 'JJ' Jareau sighed as she rolled over in her hotel bed in Stillwater, Oklahoma. She could tell by the ringtone coming from her phone that it was her husband William LaMontagne Jr calling her again. She had been gone less than 48 hours and this was the third time he had tried calling her. Reluctantly she answered her phone. "Hi Will" she rolled her eyes inwardly. "What's up?"
"Hey Cher" Will drawled in his Louisianan accent. "You answered your phone! I've been trying all day to reach you… How's your case goin'? Got any leads yet?"
JJ forced a smile before replying. "You know I've been busy working. The start and end of a case are always when we're busiest as we need to be able to get to know the local PD in the beginning and let them know that whilst we have the overriding authority as the FBI, we're never here to step on any toes and the case will always remain there's for as long as they want it." It was always like this. Or at least it had been in the last three years of their relationship: Will was always checking up on her, seemingly expecting the case to be resolved almost immediately so JJ and the rest of the team could be on the jet back home within a day or two. It wasn't that JJ didn't like that her boyfriend was phoning her, it was normally a welcomed distraction from the gruesome cases the team usually worked on, but the repetitiveness and impatience of the calls had seriously started affecting how JJ felt about the Louisianan-turned-Virginian police detective.
"I know it is, J. I just miss you."
JJ sighed audibly down the phone before inhaling deeply. "I know you do. It shouldn't be too long of a case. PD has a short list of suspects already, so providing our killer is in there, we should be able to catch him pretty soon and be on our way home. I've gotta go though, Hotch wants us up early."
She hated lying to him. She hated lying period, but they had reached a point in their relationship where conversations (at least on her part) took considerate effort not to have awkward silences throughout. Will probably didn't think the same, she rationalised, or else he wouldn't keep phoning her when she was away. Exhaling slowly to herself, she listened whilst Will told her how much he loved her, before hanging up her phone and tossing it on the bed beside her. She knew that whilst Hotch hadn't specifically said anything about wanting everyone at the station early the next morning, it would still be expected and so with a slump of her shoulders, she closed the case file in front of her, grabbed her go-bag from the dresser and made her way into the small bathroom to get ready for bed.

The following morning, the team met at Stillwater police department to discuss the case so far, as they had agreed the previous evening. Using the information provided by the police, they were able to provide a preliminary profile and had deduced that their killer was a white male in his late 20s to early 30s. "As he's dumping the bodies between 8:10am and 8:45am, it's likely he also works a conventional 9-5 job, maybe in an office or something similar" Morgan theorised as JJ walked back to the team with hot coffees in her hands: one for each of the team.
Smiling gratefully at the blonde, Emily Prentiss nodded in agreement with Morgan. "Or he could be working around the school times. They generally start around 9am, so if he's gotta get a kid to school…"
As the team continued to discuss who they could be looking for, JJ's phone rang loudly from her pocket. "Excuse me" she started as she pulled out her phone and glanced at the caller ID. Of course it was Will calling her again. "Morning Will" she simpered as she walked away, knowing that the team, despite their best attempts to ignore her, would be listening in to her conversation. It wasn't that her team were particularly intrusive, more so wanting to ensure the media liaison was safe at all times. "How did you sleep?"
"Oh, you're awake! How's your case going? Are you any closer to finding your guy and coming home?"
Trust Will to ignore her questions and jump straight to wanting to know when she was coming home. It seemed to be all he ever cared about these days. It wasn't like it was less than 12 hours since they had last spoken, and everyone had been asleep for most of those hours. She'd never say anything to him, but JJ was seriously beginning to feel suffocated by him, feel as though if she wasn't within his direct line of sight, he would worry and overcrowd her until she was within his vision, trying to maintain the constant lines of communication to make sure she was okay. Did he worry this much when they first started dating? Did he think she was with someone else if she wasn't with him?
"We've got a basic theory. I don't know exactly how long we'll be down here though; you know how these cases go. As soon as I know when we'll be home, I'll let you know though. Hopefully it won't be too long. I'll speak to you later, we're busy here." Before giving Will a chance to reply, JJ pulled her phone from her ear and hung up, placing her phone back in her jeans pocket.
"Is everything okay, JJ?" Spencer asked as she joined the group again, smiling earnestly. She always loved her the young genius looked out for her.
"Yeah, it was just Will phoning to see how we're getting on" she replied with a smile of her own. "He likes to make sure we're okay, especially in the first couple of days. He knows how hard it can be for me being away from home sometimes." She couldn't bring herself to tell him that the phone calls were almost incessant and were a drain, she couldn't start complaining in the middle of a precinct.
