Caught in the cold
Ouatfan asked for a oneshot of Emma and David getting caught in the snow without any ways of communication. He tries his best to keep her warm and awake until help arrives. Combined with a guest's request.
"I knew you should have stayed off today." David sighed. Emma was shivering subtly at her desk. She was already feeling sick as a dog. The last thing she needed was for the snow to have them stuck in the station. The temperature had plummeted throughout the day. The doors were all frozen shut. Even if they weren't, the snow was up past Emma's knees. It would have been almost impossible to get out because of that alone.
Neither David or Emma had their phones with them. Emma's was in for repair after the screen breaking, and David had left his on charge at home. David had tried to see if he could reach anybody else with the walkies, but it was pointless. They were both stuck in the station until someone came and dug them out. The boiler was on the blink too, so the place wasn't even heated.
Emma groaned and laid her head on the desk. She was feeling very sleepy. She tried to close her eyes and nap this out, but found her dad shaking her shoulder.
"Dad." Emma groaned. "Tryna sleep…"
"I know you are, but you can't." David explained. He knew Emma was sick and needed rest, but right now he was concerned that the sleepiness was actually a reaction to the cold. He shrugged off his own jacket and draped it over Emma's shoulders to try and raise her temperature. Emma tried to hand it back to him. "I'm fine." David insisted. "You need that. You're freezing."
"You're in the same room as me, dad. You'll catch pneumonia without another layer on." Emma tried to reason with him, but David was having none of it.
"I'm fine. Hey, what was that TV show you wanted your mom and I to watch? It sounded good." David asked her. In truth, David wasn't really thinking about TV at that moment. He just needed to keep Emma talking. He didn't want to panic her, but he was beginning to worry about her. She was already fragile when she started work that day. He and Snow had both tried to convince her to take the day off, but Emma refused. Now they were both stuck in a room with the temperature well below freezing. He wasn't sure how long he was going to be able to keep her going until help arrivied.
Fortunately, Snow became worried when neither her husband or daughter appeared home well after they were due to arrive. Ordinarily, she would put it down to a last-minute emergency call. But given the weather and Emma's illness something just didn't sit right. So she left Neal with Granny and went with the dwarves to the station.
Even with all eight of them working together with the dwarves' tools, it still took a good half hour to get Emma and David out. David had never been so relieved to see his wife and her makeshift brothers. Emma was going to be alright.
