Chapter 34: …And Then There Were None

I had my apartment to myself while Cheryl was out of town for her journalism. Sadly she and I are hunting the same thing…only in a different perspective. She was following the news of a serial killer I was helping the Winchesters and Bobby with high activity of monsters. These deaths have been occurring the past few weeks. I had hunters passing the news onto me as I did research for them. But When I noticed a pattern on the north region of Ohio, I contacted Bobby and he too noticed this.

Sadly I've got the misfortune of catching a cold. Been congested and coughing my lungs up to a point I can't leave the house. And I'm starting to think I might have the flue as well with the chills. So I sat on my couch surrounded by newspaper and a map with highlighted locations of monster attacks. My cellphone was on speaker with the guys on the other end.

"I've been getting blasts from hunters all week. Nest of vamps. Werewolf dance party. Shifters, six of them. Two hunters died taking them out. Ghouls, ghouls. Ghoul-wraith smorgasbord." Bobby said

"Is it just me, or is that a straight kick-line down I-80?" Dean asked.

"Correct." I said then sneezed loudly.

"Looks to me like it's a Sherman march monster mash." Dean added.

"Yeah, but where are they marching to?" Sam asked.

Bobby and I made a prediction earlier that the next location would be at Sandusky, Ohio. Yesterday the news went crazy of a man murdering his wife and children. He had no memory, yet evidence showed he committed the murders. Since there were bloody fingerprints on the murder weapon.

"What is it?" Sam asked.

"Guy bashes in his family's heads." Bobby said.

Both the Winchesters were quiet. A moment later I started coughing again.

"Sky, you sure you can be our researcher for this?" Sam asked.

"Better in my bed than out there," I muttered.

"Kay, get some rest." Sam said.

"And you guys be careful." I finished.

With nothing else to say we said our goodbyes. Not a moment later I was back in a coughing fit. Terrific. Need to decongest, I went into the bathroom to start a steam shower. Steam showers are the best way for drainage. As I sat in my shower enjoying the steam I thought what has been going on these past few weeks.

Sam and I started dating…well in the way of the hunter. We usually skype since the boys go hunting on a regular basis. Yet after each case they would recover at Bobby's and Sam would drive over to see me for a day or two. We basically either hang out at my place with a home cook meal or go out and see a movie. Practically anything that is normal when it comes to dating. No talking about the supernatural or anything involving weapons.

Although, we haven't gone far as kissing. Sure we sleep in the same bed and make out a few times…though there something holding him back. I don't push it. But I do hope we can take the next step. With the Mother of All and the angel civil war going on…who knows what will happen.

It wasn't long when the hot water turned cold. Taking a deep breath, I got out of the shower, dried off and put my pajamas on. I took some Benadryl then headed off to bed, hoping to get rid of this cold by tomorrow.

I got my phone and turned it on. A second later it rang. Caller ID saying it was Bobby.

"House of the dying." I greeted.

"Skylar," Bobby replied.

"Yeah," I said coughing slightly though not as rough as yesterday.

"I need your help in research." He said.

"Lucky you, my laptop is on." I said putting Bobby on speaker. "Alright, what do you need me to find?"

Bobby told me about the case that involved some sort of parasite that can enter people and control their body at the canary. I've heard on the news about a mass shouting at the canary that killed eight people. Next Rufus was in the picture. Then the Winchesters relatives are involved the Campbell. I haven't got any contact from them since the Alpha shifter several months ago. Dean informed me that Samuel ratted them out to Crawley, making it difficult to claim Sam soul, let alone betrayed them. So hearing that Samuel and Gwen were there wasn't good, for they were hunting the Mother of All name Eve. Sadly Gwen was dead; as Bobby gave me the description what Dean said was a khan worm.

"Okay, going clairvoyant mode." I said.

With a deep breath I activated my ability and let my fingers type ferociously on the keyboard. Images and websites popping up from all the details of supernatural worms. I've gotten serpents and other gigantic worms, but none fill in the description of a twelve inch worm until I came across a Middle Easter Folklore.

"Alright, I got something that fits the description." I said.

"Shoot." Bobby replied.

"In Middle Easter folklore, there was a parasite that was used for war. The clan who owned these things called them water-drying-worms. They entered the host and possessed them to cause violence amongst enemies." I said.

"That sounds like our bug." He said.

"Although, the act of violence was the worm desperation for water. The host would drink anything to keep the parasite hydrated from water to drinking bodily fluids." I added.

"And that is not our bug." He sighed.

"Wait, what?" I asked.

"This khan worm is not causing the host to drink people. It is making them kill and jump to the next host." He explained.

"How does the worm get inside its victims?" I asked.

"Through the ear." He answered.

"Damn it, the one I found enters through the victim's mouth." I groaned. "I'll keep searching."

"Mind sending me a picture of the one you found?" Bobby asked.

"Sure." I said. "And be careful."

Hanging up I continued to do my search. For an hour I'm not finding anything that correlates to this khan worm. It must be a new species. Taking a break, I went through the documents that the boys sent me earlier from the police station. The video tape of this female creature. How the camera couldn't capture her face, yet zooming in I found her face to be a mixture of wraith, shifter, and something else.

"What are you, Eve." I whispered.

Not a moment too soon I had my phone at the ready when Sam called.

"I've got nothing," I started.

"Sky," Sam started tiredly.

Not good, when Sam starts sounds like that mean something bad has happen. Somebody had died.

"Sam…what's wrong?" I asked.

"Rufus and Samuel are dead." Sam said. "We got the worm but…"

"Oh," was all I could say.

"Think you can find a Jewish cemetery in Ohio and arrange some plans?" he asked.

"Yeah, I'll contact a friend to forge a death certificate as well." I said.

"Thanks," Sam said before hanging up.

I called a hunter friend who makes false identities and papers. When I told him of the situation, he says he'll get Rufus forwarded in an instant. I then did some research of a Jewish cemetery near the Sandusky. I called the cemetery saying I need to purchase a grave on short noticed. It took a lot of convincing and money, but I managed to reserve a spot.

Afterwards, I gotten everything cleaned up, printed the death certificate, and went to meet up with the guys.

.o0o.

At the cemetery I stood next to the Winchesters staring at a freshly filled grave. It was raining but neither of us cared as we bid farewell to Rufus. I remember him years ago at River Pass as he told me I was clairvoyant. How he told me to have a psychic ability would be thought.

"The more you bond with people the most likely you'll feel their pain. Clairvoyant in the sensory department is nothing to its definition. And being a know-it will make you the best hunter and the worse human. I know a lot of things about a lot of people. I know ain't no peashooter gonna help you. Even if you manage to scrape things off there's gonna be something else down the road. Folks like us . . . there ain't no happy ending. We all got it coming. I'm what you've got to look forward to in this life. And you will be just more open. Hunter, researcher, or pedestrian, your life is in this shit."

Those were his word to me.

Bobby came over staring at the grave.

"I gotta say, never figured Rufus for the religious type." Dean said.

"Well, he didn't exactly keep kosher." Bobby said. "He always used to pull the old 'Can't work in a Sabbath' card…whenever we had to bury a body." He took a deep breath, trying to control his emotions. "You know, I was just a job. I was Joe Mechanic. Then my wife got possessed…went nuts on me. I stabbed her, that didn't stopped her. Next thing I knew, this guy comes busting in. Soaks her with holy water and sends that demon straight to hell so fast. I'd have gone away for killing her. But Rufus cleaned up everything. Taught me a thing or two…about what's really out there. Pretty soon we were riding together. Worked like that for years. King of like you two knuckleheads."

"So, what happened?" Sam asked.

"It was Omaha." Bobby answered. "It was my fault. And he never let it go."

Probably the death of Rufus's daughter. Rufus said what changed him the most. The event that hurt him the most was losing his daughter.

"Well, he should have." Dean said.

"You don't know what I did, Dean." Bobby said.

"Doesn't matter." Dean said.

"What do you mean doesn't…" Bobby started.

"I mean, at the end of the day, you two were family." Dean interrupted. "Life's short. Now, ours are shorter than most. We're gonna spend it wringing our hands? Something gonna get us eventually. And when my guts get ripped out, just so you three know, we're good. Blanket apology for all the crap that anybody's done, all the way around. "

"Some of us pulled a lot of crap, Dean." Sam added.

"Well, clean slate." Dean said.

Sam nodded, "Okay."

I unwrapped a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label and handed it to Bobby. He accepted the bottle and uncapped it before pouring the alcohol onto the grave.

"C'mon boys, let's give them privacy." I said taking Sam's hand.

The guys nodded as we left the grave for Bobby to have a moment with Rufus. It's sad to hear about Bobby's story in how he became a hunter and the rift between him and Rufus. Let alone the speech Dean made had me think about the hurt I held on Castiel. I know I've been blaming the angel for the death of Ellen and Jo. But what Dean said had me realize there is no point in holding that much anger.

It's best to forgive and move on.
