Hey guys! great news! not only did my first day back at school go smoothly, but I found my muse again! Hope you enjoy this longer chapter!
Skye got up before her alarm this time, filled with nervous anticipation. It was finally Friday. Ward's party would be tonight, and Skye cursed herself for not remembering to ask if she could go last night- She was too wrapped up in dinner, and the brand new phone she had sitting on her nightstand My own phone! to remember that she still needed to ask about the party.
But it didn't matter, She'd just ask this morning. If she couldn't go she was sure she could get Ward's number today and text him on my new phone! and it would be fine.
She got up out of bed, picking up her phone carefully before walking over to the dresser. She would have to pick something with pockets, which most of the skirts (unfortunately) didn't have. She decided on a pair of light wash jeans and a baggy yellow sweater. It was getting colder, being late September in Wisconsin, so she thought this would be suitable. She tucked her phone in her pocket before grabbing her shoes and backpack and walking downstairs.
"Hey, Mr. Garrett," Skye began as she walked down the stairs, skipping a few on her way down, "One of my friends is having a party later tonight and I was wondering if-"
Skye paused, not seeing anyone in the main room or dining room as she turned the corner of the stairs. She finished walking down the rest of the stairs before peeking into the kitchen, trying to find any trace of her legal guardians. She peeked around a bit, looking for a note as she realized they weren't there, but there wasn't even a note this time.
She figured that he probably had to go into work early again as he had previously that week, and maybe didn't have time to write a note. She tried not to be hurt that they didn't even warn her they were gone, but she brushed it aside and figured she would have to ask for their numbers when she got home later.
She quickly grabbed and finished off an orange for breakfast before deciding to write a note in case the Garretts were there. Maybe they had a day off and wanted to sleep in. I don't know their schedule yet.
Mr. and Mrs. Garrett, In case you're here and I missed you, I just wanted to let you know I'm heading out for school. I'm sure you know this already seeing as you bought the phone, but my number is 866-740-4531 in case something happens. Be back later,
-Skye.
Satisfied with the quick note, she set it on the dining room table before putting her shoes on and heading out the door.
School here was actually pretty nice, Skye thought. She had a solid group of friends and none of her teachers seemed to hate her like Mr. Drew had at St. Marthas. She actually felt like she could succeed, even if she was worried about making sure her grades were to the perfect standards the Garretts wanted.
She had a few B's in Science and Math, but overall she was pretty proud of her grades.
As she walked into US History, she noticed that Mr. Coulson looked different than normal. He had bags under his eyes and a coffee on his desk, but he still maintained his air of friendliness and waved at her when she walked in.
She still had a few moments before school started, and as Jemma and Fitz were early (they always seemed to beat her for some reason, she guessed they liked getting to school early,) she figured it was as good a time as ever to ask for their numbers. They seemed like people she would want to hang out with after school some time, even if she didn't know what they were talking about half the time.
"hey Skye," Fitz said as she walked towards them.
"What's up?" Jemma finished, looking up from her worksheet.
"Oh, well, I got a new phone," she explained slightly sheepishly as she pulled the device out of her pocket. "I was kind of hoping, well, if we're friends and all-"
"Oh, Skye! do you want our numbers? We'd love to be able to contact you more!" Jemma bubbled, clearly excited at the prospect of friendship.
"Yeah!" Fitz added, smiling warmly, even if he wasn't as outwardly elated as Jemma had been. The three of them exchanged numbers before Jemma mentioned having lunch together again, to which Skye happily agreed. She felt her nervousness melt away at the warmth both Jemma and Fitz radiated, smiling at them before heading back to her seat.
Just as she sat down, Grant walked in, looking at her and waving.
"Hey Skye," he said as he walked over to his own desk, turning his chair to look at her. "What's up?"
"Oh! actually, I got a new phone yesterday. How about you?"
"Ah, that's cool! I can give you my number real quick," he said, holding his hand out for her phone. She gave it to him and he quickly typed in his number before handing it back. "I've just been preparing for the party tonight." He smiled at her, before adding "you are coming, right?"
"Uhh," Skye said, nervousness creeping back in. "I should be able to, but I haven't been able to ask Mr- My parents," she caught herself, hoping he didn't notice her stumble over the topic of guardianship. She wondered with slight anxiety if the Garretts were okay with her lying like this, claiming them as parents, but she had more pressing concerns.
Grant frowned a little, furrowing his eyebrows, and Skye shifted uncomfortably in her seat, worried he might've caught her slip up.
"You've had like, all week. How come you haven't asked already?"
Skye quickly traded one concern for another, unsure how to answer. She was glad he hadn't noticed her small fumble, but wasn't prepared to answer the question he had asked.
"Oh, my parents have just been really busy this week. They work late sometimes, and we went out to dinner last night and I just got distracted, I guess."
He made a dissatisfied noise, but didn't press more before turning around just before the bell rang, signalling the beginning of class.
After all her morning classes were done, she made her way through the lunch line, turning to look at the selection of hot lunches and accidentally knocking into someone.
"Oh, I'm so sorry- Daniel?"
"Wow, you really seem to have a thing for running into me, huh?" he remarked, smirking. "Twice in one week."
She smiled, rolling her eyes. "How is Calc going?" she asked, grabbing a bowl of assorted fruit chunks before moving up the line again with Daniel.
"Same old, same old. Mr. Rockford teaches the class well, but it's still a pain to sit through, even if he does make decent jokes."
"I feel you. I currently have like, an 83 in pre-Calc. Though I have Mr. Gonzales and whenever he starts talking I have to fight to stay awake," she added with a small chuckle.
She made her way through the line and paid, waiting at the door for Daniel before they began walking to the table.
"Well, even if Calculus is hell, if you ever need any help in pre-Calc I could probably help you out. I did pretty well in that class," he finished with a warm smile that definitely didn't make Skye's heart bubble and ache or anything.
"I might have to take you up on that offer sometime," she responded, trying to sound nonchalant. She smiled back at him as they reached the table with the rest of the gang, minus Clint as he had "gone home earlier with a stomach bug. Think he just wants to skip Spanish, though," according to Nat.
They joined happily in the chit chat, discussing the current school drama and gossip, along with classes and homework schedules. Halfway through lunch, Skye remembered that she wanted to get all their numbers, so she nervously interrupted to ask, trying to sound cool about it. She was reassured, however, when everyone smiled warmly and added their numbers, passing the phone around the table, ending with Daniel.
"there, now you have a way to contact me if you need help with math. Or if you desperately need an innocent bystander to run into, seeing as that's like, your mission and everything," he added with a playful smirk.
Skye felt herself blush a little at the joking remark, but played it off casually as she grabbed her phone back and rolled her eyes.
Eventually a bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, and they all parted ways as the hustle and bustle of students coming and leaving for class pushed the group apart.
The rest of Skye's classes for the day were easy enough (besides math but she could probably ask Daniel for help later,) and she began her daily trek back to the Garrett's house.
As always, reviews are much appreciated!
