Chapter 37: The Man Who Would Be King

Castiel's POV

Castiel sat on a bench in the park early in the morning. He has regretted what has happened the past week. The betrayal of both ends. He needed guidance. The only person he could talk to was his father…the spiritual leader who has vanished. He prayed his father would listen and give an answer or step in to stop all this madness.

"You know, I've...I've been here for a very long time. I remember many things. I remember being at a shoreline… watching a little grey fish heave itself up on the beach and an older brother saying, "Don't step on that fish, Castiel. Big plans for that fish." I remember the Tower of Babel. All thirty-seven feet of it which, I suppose, was impressive at the time. And when it fell, they howled 'Divine Wrath'. But, come on, dried dung can only be stacked so high.

"I remember Cain and Abel, David and Goliath...Sodom and Gomorrah. And, of course, I remember the most remarkable event. Remarkable because it never came to pass. It was averted by two boys, an old drunk, a clairvoyant girl, and a fallen angel. The grand story. And we ripped up the ending… and the rules...and destiny. Leaving nothing but freedom and choice. Which is all well and good, except... Well, what if I've made the wrong choice? How am I supposed to know? I'm getting ahead of myself.

"Let me tell you my story. " Castiel said as he looked into the sky. "Let me tell you everything."

Skylar's POV

Two days earlier

There was suspicion about Castiel working with Crowley. After Sam asked me to use my clairvoyant ability that confirmed of Crowley existence, thanks to Eve mention the little demon. Yet Dean held some denial that Cass was on the other side. So Bobby had a plan that we act to our normal routine and if Castiel comes around asking where whoever was, we say that person is on a normal monster case.

As time went on, I've been helping the Winchesters and Bobby from my place. Castiel would have gotten suspicious in wondering why I would be at Bobby's for such a period of time. So when the boys got themselves a Hellspawn, something clicked. I know it was one of their methods to get me here. It was also another to satisfied my inner rage. There was a type of anger I held against Hellspawns. They were the monsters that took my dad, stolen my childhood…ruined the family that Ellen wanted.

So grabbing my gear, I called my boss saying I'm going to get next week's edition of landscape photos. These were my three day getaways that won't get me fired when working for a magazine. Got to love being in events and landscaping department.

When I got to Bobby's late in the night, I found Sam and Bobby at work with the Hellspawn in the chair. Sam gave me a hug while Bobby handed me a knife.

"If it gets too much, let us know." Bobby warned.

I nodded as I put Athena's medallion on that helped me get in control of my emotions before walking into the room. Center of the room was a man with red hair trapped under a devils trap while chained up. He looked at me impressed while Bobby stepped forward.

"I gotta tell you Redd. For a filthy, lower-than-snake-spit hell spawn…you seemed to turn yourself into a damn fine hunter." Bobby complimented, taking a seat on the stool in front of the demon. "I don't know whether to kill you or kiss you."

"I choose door number one." I muttered.

We were playing good cop/bad cop routine.

"Oh, please kill me." The Hellspawn said in a southern accent.

"That was you that dug put that nest of vamps back in Swan Valley, wasn't it?" Bobby asked.

"That was nice work." Sam said leaning against the wall.

The Hellspawn looked at Sam, "Eight of them on one go, roped and tied."

"And you deliver them to Crowley?" I asked.

The Hellspawn chuckled, "Read the papers, bitch. The king is dead. "

Bobby chuckled as he grabbed a large silver flask and splashed holy water all over him. Smoke and steam appeared where the holy water got on. The Hellspawn shouted in pain, voice sounding like an animal.

"Crowley's alive." Bobby said losing the good cop vibe. "You prove it just by being, you poor, dumb jackass. Crowley's alive, his nets are still out. Except now he's using you schmucks to hunt his monsters."

"Up yours." The Hellspawn said.

"Tried to be nice." Bobby said. "You know Skylar?"

The Hellspawn nodded.

"So you know that the Harvelle's hold a major grudge against your kind." Bobby said as he stood up.

The Hellspawn looked at me as I twirled Ruby's knife around my fingers. Dean appeared and nodded his head at us. The boys left leaving me alone with the demon schmuck. He stared at me as I walked around him like a lioness surrounding its prey.

"Redd? Where's Crowley?" I demanded with authority, which he ignored. "Well, guess we're gonna do this the hard way then."

After saying that, I stabbed the knife deep into the Hellspawn's thigh, right next to the knee. Bright sparks projected from the wound while the demon screamed in long agonizing pain. I smirked as I twisted the knife adding more pain and torment.

"I'll give you a moment to remember." I murmured, before joining the boys in the kitchen.

"Nothing, all right? Told him we were on some crap monster hunt. He doesn't know that we're getting close to Crowley. You know, he's our friend...And we are lying to him through our teeth." Dean said.

"What's goin' on?" I asked.

"Dean encountered Castiel." Sam

"So he burned the wrong bones." Dean defended. "So Crowley tricked him."

"He's an angel." Bobby countered.

"He is the Balki Bartokomous of Heaven! He can make a mistake!" Dean shouted.

"We're not saying that yet." I said calmly.

"You think that Cass is in with Crowley. Crowley?" Dean growled.

"Dean, I'm not entirely sure. But my abilities are saying so." I said, though felt like we were being watch. I turned to the archway. It feels like somebody was here…yet there was no one physically. I don't like it as I went to Dean who yelled at me.

"You hardly understand your ability!" Dean snapped.

"Now, look, I hate myself for even thinking it. But I don't know." Bobby intervenes.

"Look, Dean, he's our friend, too, okay? And I'd die for him. I would, but, look; I'm praying we're wrong here." Sam said.

"But if we ain't, if there's a snowball of a snowball's chance here...that means we're dealing with a Superman who's gone dark side. This means we've got to be cautious. We got to be smart. And maybe stock up on some Kryptonite." Bobby said.

Dean sighed and looked at Sam, "This makes you Lois Lane."

"Look, one problem at a time here. We got to find Crowley now, before the damn fool cracks open Purgatory." Bobby said.

With nothing else to say, we went back in the den. Bobby took his seat and sat in Front of Redd as he grabbed the knife, "Where's Crowley?"

"Up yours. Aaaaaaaaaaaaahh!" The demon cried out as Bobby twisted the knife. "I don't know where Crowley is!"

"Are you sure about that? We can twist again all the way to next summer." Bobby said continuing the torture.

Redd was a hard demon to crack. Then I remembered something I went to the gun safe and pulled out an old friend. I grabbed the colt and one of the remaining bullets that have been carved. We hardly used the colt because it was a pain in the ass to carve the symbols on the bullets. But when desperate times call in for desperate measures, this fellow was the thing to go too.

I came back and told Bobby to move out of the way. I sat on the stool in front of the Hellspawn at arm's length while the guys were behind me as back up. I showed the Hellspawn the gun and his black eyes widen.

"Oh, so ya know the Colt." I murmured. "How about we play a game?"

"And what came is that, bitch." The Hellspawn panted.

"Russian Roulette," I said, showing him the empty chamber before putting the special bullet in. "You got six opportunities." Then spun the cylinder. "Now ya don't. "

"Doubt you can pull the trigger," Redd sneered.

I chuckled, as I aimed the colt and fired. Redd flinched closing his eyes, except there was no explosion…merely a click. Redd opened his eyes and realized I meant business.

"Now where's Crowley. And ya got five chances left." I warned.

"Oh, God! I never even met him! I don't deal with Crowley direct." Redd cried.

I pulled the trigger…click.

"Well, who do you deal with?" Bobby asked.

Redd hesitated as I wrapped my finger around the trigger. The moment I was about to pull the Hellspawn broke right then and there. "The dispatcher. A demon named Ellsworth."

"Good boy, was that so hard?" I teased.

Redd panted as he glared at me. I merely smiled then asked, "Now where is Ellsworth?"

Redd gave us the directions on where to find Ellsworth. He was in South Dakota too on the border between the North and South. I looked at Sam who was on his laptop and did a google maps seeing there is indeed a cabin in that precise location.

"You're gonna let me go now?" Redd asked.

I stared at the boys who shrugged while Bobby gave a knowing nod. I turned around facing Redd. Even though he wasn't the actually Hellspawn who killed William Harvelle twenty-two years ago. John Winchester took care of that. But a Hellspawn is a Hellspawn, just the same as a Demon is a Demon.

So I aimed the colt and fired. The bullet struck Redd in the chest as the magic burned out its inside. Not a moment later there was nothing but a dead vessel. I knew the actual hunter in this body was long been dead since his hunt. The Hellspawn was just keeping the body alive and using its knowledge about hunting.

I turned around facing the guys, "We better get ready."

I walked passed them to get more bullets for the journey. As I headed up I hear the boys talk.

"Remind me not to piss her off." Dean mumbled.

"You should see her when it's her time of the month." Sam muttered.

"Can it, you Idjit." Bobby said.

.o0o.

The next day we reached Ellsworth place by noon. When we got there, the guys gave me the colt while Dean had the knife. We had our weapons ready was we made our way to the door. Dean gave a silent count of three and kicked the door down. The boys then Bobby went in first while I came in last.

However, there was no battle to deal with. In fact, the entire cabin was deserted. There was furniture but no occupants in the place. For a place that should be home base for hunting monsters…there were no documents. No maps, books, or a single piece of paper.

"Hey, look in the back." Sam suggested.

"Demons get tipped and bugged out?" Sam suggested.

"Maybe they run from us now." Sam guessed. "I mean, that's be a nice thought, right?"

"Yeah, hear you boys' names and they're running with their tails between their legs." I said.

"Yeah, if that's what happened." Bobby said.

"Yeah," Sam sighed.

Again, I was getting that feeling we were being watched. We searched out the place finding nothing. Though there were still some tape on walls and scratch marks on the wood flood indicating a filing cabinet was there. Otherwise there was nothing. As if this place was cleaned out and abandon.

"Hey...The place is clean." Sam said.

"Yeah, but it's...it's like "Mr. Clean" clean, you know? It's kind of OCD for your average demon." Bobby said.

"Yeah, from what my anility says…they've been gone since sunrise." I added.

"Yeah. So what now?" Sam asked.

"We'd call Cass." Dean suggested.

"What?" Sam said surprised.

"This is usually the point where we would call Cass for help." Dean explained.

"We talked about this." Bobby reminded.

"Is that even wise?" I asked.

"No, you talked. I listened. This is Cass, guys. I mean, when there was no one...and we were stuck - and I mean really stuck, he broke ranks. He has gone to the mat, cut, and bleeding for us, so many frigging' times. This is Cass! Don't we owe him the benefit of the doubt, at least?" Dean said.

Sam, Bobby, and I looked at each other in silent debate. Having no choice, Bobby and I nodded while Sam started the prayer.

"Castiel, this is really important, okay? Um...We really need to talk to you."

Castiel would usually appear in a few seconds. A minutes passed by and there was no angel in the room. Again I got this strange feeling we were being watch as my eyes focused by the fireplace. There was no one there. Yet my ability told me someone was here in this room with us.

"Castiel, come on in." Dean said calmly with his head bowed. A minute goes by and there was no angel. "Cass is busy."

"That's all right." Sam said with doubt. "We are, too. Come on."

"Back to square one." Bobby said.

"Great. Well, what do we do now?" Dean asked.

"Well, we caught one hunter demon before. We can do it again." Bobby answered.

I nodded as Dean and I followed the guys out. However an arm wrapped around my neck and tossed me to the ground. Follow by a punch to the face. I cried out trying to fight off the demon but his weight suppressed my arms from moving. Not a moment too soon, the demon was shoved off me as Dean took care of the demon.

Gasping, there were three demons in the room. The boys trying to handle it yet the sudden intrusion had everyone off guard. Dean struggled with his demon as did Bobby and Sam. I tried to get the colt ready and aimed at the demon, except the boys were to close.

Suddenly Castiel appeared and purified the Demon on Dean. Another demon shoved Bobby through the door leaving him open. Taking a deep breath, I fired the colt as the bullet struck the demon in the back and then killing it. Castiel went over to the last demon, grasping its neck and purifying the demon out of the vessel.

I coughed then spit some blood. Not a good start for the morning. Sam immediately ran to my side and helped me up. He took a look at my face and scowled. There was warm blood rushing out of my nose. The damn demon probably had broken it. Castiel noticed the blood as he walked over and placed his hand on my forehead. There was wave of warmth consuming my face. When Castiel pulled his hand away, my face no longer hurt let alone my nose stopped bleeding.

"Thanks," I whispered.

"You're welcome." Castiel said.

"It is good to see you, Cass." Dean panted.

"Are you all right?" Castiel asked everyone.

"Yeah." Sam said keeping an arm around me. "Perfect timing, Cass."

"I'm glad I found you. I come with news." Castiel said.

"Yeah?" Dean asked. "What?"

"I firmly believe Crowley is alive." Castiel said.

"Yeah. You think, Kojak?" Dean said sarcastically. "Well, Bobby, what do we think about Cass saving our asses? Again?"

"I think we owe you an apology." Bobby said.

"Why?" Castiel asked.

"We've been hunting Crowley this whole time. And keeping it from you." Sam answered.

"We thought..." I paused before saying. "We thought you were working with Crowley."

"You thought what?" Castiel said in debelief.

"I know. It's crazy, right?" Dean agreed.

"It's just that you torched the wrong bones. It doesn't matter. We - we were wrong." Bobby explained.

"You know...You could've just asked me." Castiel said.

"And we should have. We never should've doubted you. It's...we just hope you can forgive us. "Dean apologized.

Castiel paused as he took our apologies in, "It's forgotten."

"Thanks." Dean said.

"Yeah." Sam said. "Thanks, Cass."

"It is a little absurd, though." Castiel noted.

"I know, I know." Bobby said.

"Thanks to Eve putting words in our head." I added.

"Superman going to the dark side." Castiel said playfully in his monotone accent. "I'm still just Castiel."

All of us hunters stopped when Castiel said that. Didn't Bobby say that last night? Of course he did. Also Castiel wasn't one for media, literature, or comic books. So either Castiel knows who Superman was…or Castiel have been spying on us this whole time.

"I guess we can put away the Kryptonite, right?" Dean said, keeping to the act.

"Exactly." Castiel said with a bit of mirth. "I have to go."

With that said Castiel disappeared. Bobby, Sam, and I stared at Dean who looked at the ground. We were right, yet Dean's denial has ruined our chances or postpones our chances in fining Crowley.

"I'm sorry," Dean said looking up at us.

"Dean, we get it. Cass is our friend." Sam defended.

Dean nodded. I sighed as Bobby headed out, "I'll get the holy oil."

I sighed; this was going to be a hard night.

Dean went to the Impala to grab Holy Oil. Apparently Holy oil is just like rock salt to Angels. They cannot leave a ring of fire until the flames are extinguished. Also when Castiel tossed a bottle at Michael. Molotoving him. It's sad we had to use this on Castiel now.

Dean took the sacred jar and made a ring. Afterwards we were practically quiet until nightfall. We all buried the three demons then went our separate ways. I spent the time in the woods taking landscape photos. Sam joined though he hardly says anything. Basically a body guard in case there were more demons. I wasn't until we got a call from Bobby did he announced the trap was ready.

"I hate this." I said.

"I know, but we got to be sure." Sam said wrapping an arm around my shoulder.

"Sometimes I wish I wasn't a know it all." I grumbled.

"Yeah, but your ability has helped us time again." He said.

It was nightfall when we got back. Dean sat on a chair while Bobby occupied the other. The plan was simple; we act casual and invite Castiel for a forgiveness drink. Sure Castiel can't get drunk, but does notice a slight tingle sensation when on the first stages of being buzz. So into out positions, I held the lighter while leaning against the wall close to the ring of oil while Sam walked around with a notebook.

"Castiel, uh...we need you for a little powwow down here, so come on down." Dean prayed.

Just like that Castiel appeared. "Hello."

"Oh, Johnny-on-the-spot." Bobby said.

"You're still here." Castiel noted.

"Yeah, we had to bury the bodies." Sam explained.

"And we found a little whiskey." Dean said lifting a bottle. "Thanks for coming."

"How can I help?" Castiel asked.

Sam nodded as he lifted the journal, "Oh, look. We, um - we have a new plan. We think we've finally figured out a way to track down Crowley."

Castiel nodded as he made his way towards Sam. I walked up behind Castiel and ignite the lighter and tossed it on the ring. Immediately a ring of fire consumed around the angel. The flames were much hotter, as the figure of speech goes hot as hell.

Castiel stopped looking confused, "What are you doing?"

"We gotta talk." Dean answered. "And don't lie. Skylar will know if you are."

"About what? Let me go!" Castiel demanded.

"About Superman." I said. "And Kryptonite."

"How'd you know what I said?" Bobby asked.

"How long you been watching us?" Sam asked too.

"You know who spies on people, Cass?" Dean said. "Spies."

Castiel stopped and looked at Dean, "Okay, just wait. I don't even know what you mean."

The boys look at me and I shook my head, "He lies. He knows what we mean."

"What about this demon craphole?" Sam asked leaning against a pole." How is it so, uh, next-to-godliness clean in here?"

"And how exactly did Crowley trick you with the wrong bones?" Bobby asked.

"It's hard to understand. It's hard to explain. Just let me go. Let me out and I can –"Castiel started.

"You got to look at me, man." Dean interrupted. "You got to level with me and tell me what's going on. Look me in the eye and tell me you're not working with Crowley." Castiel sighed and looked at Dean before looking away. Whatever Dean saw pissed him off. "You son of a bitch."

"Let me explain." Castiel pleaded in his monotone.

"You're in it with him?" Dean said. "You and Crowley have been going after Purgatory together? You have, huh? This whole time."

"I did it to protect you. I did it to protect all of you." Castiel explained.

"Protect us how?" Sam asked. "By opening a hole into monsterland!"

"He's right, Cass." Bobby said. "One drop got through and it was Eve. And you want to break down the entire dam?"

"To get the souls." Castiel answered. "I can stop Raphael. Please, you have to trust me."

"Trust you?!" Sam snapped. "How in the hell are we supposed to trust you now?"

"I'm still me. I'm still your friend." Castiel said looking at Sam. "Sam...I'm the one who raised you from Perdition."

Wait, Castiel raised Sam from hell? He told Dean that it was impossible to free anybody from Lucifer's cage. Nothing can break the cage unless commencing the 66 rituals all in which Lilith did. So unless Castiel did those 66 rituals or he found another way. But if Castiel brought him back…how come he was soulless? Sam looked at me as I confirmed this. After a few seconds I nodded, "He's telling the truth."

Sam nodded as he took Castiel's words in. "Well, no offense, but you did a pretty piss-poor job of it. " He then stopped realizing something. "Wait. Did you bring me back soulless...On purpose?

"How could you think that?" Castiel asked with betrayal on his face.

"Well, I'm thinking a lot of things right now, Cass." Sam said with much held in anger.

"Listen." Castiel said. "Raphael will kill us all. He'll turn the world into a graveyard. I had no choice."

"No, you had a choice. You just made the wrong one." Dean said.

"You don't understand. It's complicated." Castiel murmured.

"We dealt with complicated before and we solved it as a team." I growled crossing my arms.

"She's right, and you know that." Dean said. "Why else would you keep this whole thing a secret, huh, unless you knew that it was wrong? When crap like this comes around, we deal with it...like we always have. What we don't do is we don't go out and make another deal with the Devil!"

"It sounds so simple when you say it like that." Castiel murmured. "Where were you when I needed to hear it?"

Dean growled as he ground out, "I was there. Where were you?"

"You should've come to us for help, Cass." I said. "Bobby, Dean, and I were right there. We would have dropped everything for you."

"Maybe." Castiel said with guilt. Suddenly there was loud sound of gushing wind. We all looked out the window to see a large mass of demon smoke making its way towards us. Castiel eyes widen, "It's too late now. I can't turn back now. I can't."

"It's not too late." Dean said. "Damn it, Cass! We can fix this!"

"Dean, it's not broken!" Castiel shouted. "Run. You have to run now! Run!"

Having no choice, Bobby grabbed my arm and we ran out of the place. We got in his truck while Sam and Dean took the impala. It was rough to leave Castiel there but we had no choice. Also my clairvoyant ability informed me he was still alive.

I called the Winchesters to let them know we made it to the safe zone. Sam answered saying he and Dean was good. Sighing, the rest of the drive was quiet. We made it back to Bobby's and began placing warding sigils. No one said a word as we did this. Dinner was simple and soon everyone headed to bed. Though I worried about Dean who sat on the couch with a drink. Dean and Castiel were best of friends…and this was hard for him.

Sam took my hand as we went to the guest room. I changed into my usual pajamas while Sam did the Sam. We both laid in bed deep in our own thoughts.

"You think Dean will be okay?" I asked.

Sam sighed, "He needs time to be alone."

I sighed and curled up to him. "Are you okay?"

"… I don't know." He breathed, wrapping his arms around me. "After all this time, it was Castiel. I wish I knew what I've done to know…"

"Sam you can't say that. Remember the wall." I said.

"I know," he muttered.

"We'll figure this out." I whispered.

Betrayal is the hardest thing to experience, but it is the most common as a hunter. Partners betray you when on Deaths door. Sources betray you. And even the Supernatural betrays you. But in our makeshift family, family as betrayed us either it be under the influences or from another betrayal. And it hurts that Castiel who was like a brother to the Winchesters has betrayed them.

All for a bunch of souls.
