Author's Comments:
So this is the first arc, a Beast Boy centric arc, and first chapter of it. I guess this arc will take five or six chapters, but not sure yet. My main intention here is to create an ideal atmosphere for the city. Gotham is more raw and morbid than sunny Jump City. And how this atmosphere affects our main character here. So basically Beast Boy ran away from the Titans for some unknown reason and is trying to start over in Gotham. And how is he doing? Let's find out.
And a confession, this was not to be the first arc. Actually, it was meant to be centered on the other Titans, but I'm having trouble getting the right tone for some characters, especially Raven. It's kinda hard write her haha. But until I get it, let's keep track of what the Beast Boy is up to in Gotham. Enjoy the reading and any problem in my writing please let me know.
Arc One: Long Day's Journey Into Night
Chapter One: Living in the Modern Gomorrah
Time: Two weeks later
Gotham, the Capital of the World…
Gotham, the City that Never Sleeps…
Gotham, the Fear City…
Gotham has a reputation. It isn't like other big cities, like Metropolis, New York or Central City. Its buildings, huge blocks of light, look stranded somewhere between 1930 and 2001, shoulder to shoulder art deco with faceless steel and glass.
When Gar was a child, travelling with his parents to the farthest places of the Third World, he thought heaven looked like Gotham. What one of the greatest cities of so called human society can be, if not something almost divine in child's pure eyes. But then when you grow up and read about Gotham's criminals, all deformed and insane, you start to realize that's just the surface, a very thin surface. Under all that style and civilization there's a zoo full of Dick Tracy's worst nightmares yammering to get out. And Gar'll know that pretty soon.
Even its origins, Gotham City is surrounded by mysteries and scary stories to tell in the dark. Some said that many centuries ago the first inhabitants of the region, that would one day become Gotham, were an ancient Native American tribe known as the Miagini. But one day, they had to deal with an evil sorcerer. To contain this danger, the Natives sealed the warlock alive inside a cave that would one day become the central island of Gotham. The tribe erected a totem in front of the tomb as a warning sign of the evil that resided within. It is alleged that while the sorcerer was in a state of torpor, his evil essence infiltrated the ground, poisoning the ground with his dark and corrupt touch and cursing those who kill him. When the first European explorers arrived, they found the remains of a civilization, entire villages, boats, tools, but no one to find.
Another story is quite bizarre. In the early 1600s, the Dutch East India Company selected English explorer Henry Hudson to chart an easterly passage to Asia. Along his journey, he surveyed the Northeastern coastal region of what would one day become the United States. Following Hudson's course, Dutch pioneers sailed for this New World and began populating the region once inhabited by the Miagani. The pioneers established themselves in two different colonies. One colony was set up along the shore where fishing was plentiful, and the other was developed further inland. The latter colony came upon the same sealed cave with the Miagani totem erected before it. Unaware of its significance, they ignored the totem's warnings and unseal the cave. The colonists were never seen again. Two days later, men from the coastal community traveled to visit their inland brothers. When they arrived in the village, they found the town deserted. Pools of blood dotted the streets, but there were no bodies.
Whether these stories are true or not is uncertain. Whatever Gotham's past may be, it must be far from good… as its present…
Back to the present…
Do you know what's curious about Chinese? It seems that they are always shouting at each other in their language. For those who are not used to it, it may seem that they are arguing or even fighting among themselves. But, no, it's just their form of expression. it's funny the more you know about the world and its people, the more you come to the conclusion that you know nothing. It took Garfield a long time to realize that.

Gar got a job at a small Chinese restaurant in Gotham City's Chinatown. He believed that his previous experience in Mega Meaty Meat could help him with his new job, although at that time it was actually an alien invasion orchestrated by some space tofu, but no one really needed to know those details, right?
But, in general, waiters in American restaurants strive to leave a good impression on customers, as tips, after all, make up a large percentage of their salary. In Chinese restaurants, however, it pays his employees a fixed income. And servers focus more on putting food on the table quickly, rather than taking your time and treating customers like friends. Garfield was slow to learn that too.

The vast majority of his co-workers didn't even speak English and Garfield had mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, he was relieved that he didn't have to fear people asking about his past. However, he felt lonely for being in a new city and having almost no one to talk to. The only people who spoke English were his boss, Ms. Ling, and the other waiter, Mr. Lee.
Garfield was almost certain that Ms. Ling was participating in some criminal activity. Despite being young, perhaps in her early twenties, she had an intimidating pose and caused some anxiety and tension in other workers, as if they expected her to do something. Not to mention she used an eye patch, covered her left eye or… well… what was left of it. Garfield hasn't talked to her yet, nor was he looking forward to it. Since his early days in the place, he could smell a very peculiar and characteristic, and he had doubts whether the employees were chasing the dragon. Perhaps the restaurant was used as a facade to cover something else, maybe heroin, as he imagined. This would explain the reason for hiring someone who was unable to communicate with almost everyone else. However, the blond boy was not interested in such matters. 'That life was left behind', he thought. And he needed the money.
The other waiter, Mr. Lee, was the opposite and was the only one that Gar could have a real conversation with. In his 40s, he was very kind. He had passed on all the tasks to Garfield, as well as some tips for the job. Although the new employee is not known for learning fast, Mr. Lee was very patient. Even he taught him Go, a very popular strategy game in China, but Garfield, as already said, wasn't a quick learner.

Of all the difficulties that Garfield encountered in his early days at work, listening to Chinese music ceaselessly is the worst of them. He knew very few words, but he could recognize every song. Not that it's bad, but listening to the same songs day after day was almost torture, and he didn't know why, but the songs made him quite uneasy. After all, music was one of the few things that could pass through the language barrier. Sometimes having a sensitive hearing sucks.

10:03 PM
When his day work finished, Garfield went into the staff room to prepare to leave and realized that there was a person. Oddly Mr. Lee was still there, sitting at the table, even though his shift ended almost three hours ago.
"Dude, you're still here," asked Garfield, as he opened his closet. 'He probably had other services to take care of, so I better push it', he thought.
Mr. Lee was focused on his cell phone with a small smile on his face. He did not raise his head to answer his colleague.
"My wife sent a video of my daughter," replied Mr. Lee with a strong accent, as he handed Garfield his phone for him to see. "Biyu is her name, which means gemstone in Chinese. She's only six, but she's already smarter than her older big daddy here," he grinned. That was one of the rare moments when Gar saw him smile that way.
"She is beautiful," he said when he saw the little child running home with a wide smile on her face. "Six years? But haven't you been in the States for five years?" asked carefully, trying not to imply something, when returning the cell phone.
"Yes," replied Mr. Lee looking at the video and Gar failed to capture any emotion in his response.
"But why move here? If you allow me to ask," asked Gar.
"The wages here are higher and when I had the opportunity to come, I didn't think twice," answered Mr. Lee slowly.
"Even so It must be… difficult," Gar commented kindly.
"A little, but everything we do for the family is worth it," concluded Lee softly.
"Still, I don't know how I would feel if I went through the same situation," said Gar, as he picks his backpack and closes his closet.
"Probably different from what I feel," remarked the other one.
"Excuse me?" said Gar, a little offended.
"I didn't mean to offend, if you felt that way I ask for forgiveness. But there are some differences in how American and Chinese people view the world. And these differences make all difference in the way we feel and behave. I'm not saying it's been easy, far from it but I don't feel that bad," explained Mr. Lee.
"When you say differences… eh… what kind of differences?" tried the blond guy.
Mr. Lee gave a small smile and replied. "If you stay with us for a while, you will know it".
After hearing this, Gar fell into his thoughts, thinking about it, but he didn't stay there for long.
"What about your family, Mr. Logan?"
Garfield took a long breath. "They died a long time ago".
"Oh… I'm sorry to hear that," added Mr. Lee a little surprised.
"Yeah... " said Gar crestfallen.
After a few seconds in silence, "Don't you want to play a game of Go?" suggested Mr. Lee, trying to cheer his colleague up.
"And be humiliated again? I'll pass, dude," said Gar.
Mr. Lee laughed. "If you're sure. Would you like a cup of tea?" asked Mr. Lee, gesturing to the kettle.
"Nah... I think I will never like it" replied Gar.
"I don't really like it either, but it helps to relax," commented Mr. Lee.
"This is what I heard... I'd better go, so I'll see you tomorrow. Good night, Mr. Lee," said Gar walking to the restaurant exit to an alley next door.
"Good night," said Mr. Lee, returning to his cell phone.
And with that, Garfield left for his home.
Outside the Subway Station, East End, Gotham City, NJ
11:11 PM
Walking the streets at night in Gotham is asking for harassment. Arriving at the station closest to his apartment, Gar was about to start the worst part of his day. It's a twenty block walk and every day is the same. At first, he was sized up like a piece of meat by some boys in Robinson Park. Shortly after, he waded through pleas and half hearted threats from junkies at the Finger Memorial. More than halfway his walking, he stepped across a field of human rubble that lay sleeping in front of the overcrowded Sprang Mission. And finally the worst of all, the East End Avenue. Somewhere nearby, Gotham's favorite son's parents died decades ago, leaving a permanent scar for the city.
"Hey baby, do you want a piece of this ass today? You've ignored me every day!" said a blonde hooker.
"Sugar, what you say just suck these titties and fuck off, huh?" said another one.
"If you want, I can swallow you whole, pretty boy?" said a third one.
After saying that, they shouted some insults, but Gar didn't even bother to look anymore. He had some practice.
The first day he crossed that stretch, but even with his powers, he felt a tension going up his spine, causing his legs to tremble and you could tell he was afraid. Afraid to look, but more afraid if not. After all, living in Doom Mansion or Titans Tower is quite different than living among the people. On the second day, he kept his head down and tried not to look, but the words still had the effect. Eventually, he learned to turn them off. After some days, he kept his eyes looking straight ahead, a little motionless and a little lifeless, and walked through all these nightriders with a little question on his mind. 'would these girls continue with this, if they knew I'm green?'. Sometimes having a sensitive hearing sucks.
'Jason was right…'
Almost finishing his daily crusade, Garfield heard some loud noises coming from some alley nearby. He looked around only to confirm that no one really cared about them which didn't surprise him. He decided to follow them to see what was going on. Hiding behind a wall at the entrance to the alley, he watched a fight between two big men and a girl. While he debated internally if he was going to intervene or not, he noticed that the girl was wearing a very peculiar outfit. 'She must be one of the city watchers', he thought.
Watching her from his hiding place, he realized that she was trained, deflecting every blow with the grace of a dancer, but attacking quite accurately and aggressively like a fighter. 'She's good,' Gar observed. However, in a moment of carelessness, a punch found its place, hitting her in the jaw and making her fall to the ground with both hands protecting the hurt region. That was enough.
Forgetting about his initial hesitation, Gar turned into a rhinoceros and ran towards the nearest attacker. At first distracted by his fallen prey, the "nearest'' big guy soon turned after hearing a rising sound and paled with the big green animal coming towards him. Immobilized by fear or surprise, he was hit and thrown back with tremendous force that sent him straight into the realm of Morpheus.
While the animal was distracted, watching the result of its doing, the other guy took advantage of the moment to attack him. The rhino focused all its attention on the new attacker, morphed into a monkey. Dodging the attack, the small mammal jumped on the big guy's head, covering his eyes with its small hands. That was enough time for the watchwoman to get up and make her move.
With eyes covered by small green hands, the great man was trying desperately to get rid of the mammal, shaking his head violently while attempting to catch the animal with his arms, but all that failed. Suddenly, the monkey jumped away just to see the big guy see a red sole of a boot appearing in his field of vision and … soon, his world went dark.
Soon the fight was over, Gar returned to his normal human form and looked toward the street to see if there were any unwanted observers of the fight. There were none. He found it almost fascinating how people in that region gave a damn about anything that happened around here. His luck, but the girl still saw him, so he took a close look at his momentary partner. She was taller by an inch or two, and although she was wearing a mask, he could see she was blonde. But it was his clothes that most caught his attention. She wore red pants that matched the gloves. She also wore long dark red boots, going up to the middle of the thighs, and matched the top uniform. And he can't help but notice a big V that crossed his chest, her cloak and some unnecessary details in bright yellow. Gar wondered if she wore a vigilante outfit or for the carnival.
What Gar didn't know is his former outfit also looked like a carnival costume too.
"Hoo-ah! Come on! We rooooock!" shouted the girl, giving her unexpected partner a thumbs-up.
'Sure, she is an excited one,' he thought, while he thought as he watched her almost taciturn. 'She kinda reminds of… me.'
"Thanks for help, friend…" she started happily.
'She shouldn't be too trusting,' he observed.
"…, if it weren't for that punch, it would be all under control…" she continued.
'A little too convinced,' he noted.
"…I mean, uh, well, not that I really needed your help but …" she added, gesturing nervously.
'Definitely convinced,' he remarked.
She put one of her hands over her mouth when she realized what she had said. "...i-it came out wrong, didn't it? I-I didn't mean by that…".
'or maybe insecurity,' he wondered. "Hey, relax, I got it," he interrupted kindly, gesturing his hand to her stop and assuring her that he had understood.
"B-but I'm glad for your help,' she smiled.
"Don't mention," he answered, keeping a neutral tone, while he turned to see their fallen foes. 'They are some big fellas, aren't they?
"Tweedledum and Tweedledee if you are asking yourself. They are a couple of troublemakers," she offered, seeing where his eyes were glancing.
"Haha, I can see that," he smirked looking at the big DUM and DEE in their red jackets.
"They are part of the Wonderland Gang, and apparently, Mad Hatter made a pact with Two-Face to attack the Penguin...," she started to explain, but Gar stopped listening after the 'Mad Hatter'. After wondering if there were any Alice too, he made a mental note to never ask about Gotham's villains again. He knew the Gotham criminals were kind of crazy, but he wasn't too eager to know.
"Tweedledum? Tweedledee? Wonderland Gang? Mad Hatter? Really?" he asked plainly.
She chuckled. "I know, you get used," she grinned.
"Okay ... I-I'm really glad I could help, but good luck with that," he finally said. 'It's better know nothing more', he thought as he turned to go away. But…
"Hey… you have some… uh… interesting powers…" she commented with a little uncertainty.
'Damn…' he stopped and his heart suddenly skipped a beat.
"…turning into green animals is kind of peculiar… I don't know where but I think I've heard that someone who could do that…," she said with a little uncertainty.
'Damn…', he turned slowly to look at her.
"…you were on a team, weren't you?" she asked.
'Damn…', he gulped and started thinking about how he is going to get out of this.
"Ah! I think you are Zan from Young Justice!," she tried, pointing to him kind of excited and kind unsure.
'… … Who?'
She frowned after and, "No, no, wait a minute… He can't turn to animals, just his sister… but I think she doesn't turn into green ones either," she corrected herself.
He chuckled a little. "Sorry, Miss…," Gar started.
"You can call me Flamebird," she completed.
"..right, Miss Flamebird, I'm sorry, but I think you mistook me, I am just someone who's trying to live one day at a time. And, if I don't go home now, I'll probably oversleep and have to deal with a very angry boss. So, uh… good night and good luck," said Gar, before resuming his walk and leaving a clearly unconvinced girl behind.
Garfield's Apartment, East End, Gotham City, NJ
12:18 AM
After a hard day at work and a shower, Gar finally has a moment to rest and let his body feel tired. His apartment was small, dirty, had many infiltrations here and there, but he liked it. Not that there was an alternative, the rent was enough with what he earned, but there was barely enough left to buy other things. At the moment, it didn't matter. He felt at home al least.
With the bathroom mirror still fogged, he observed himself in his latest form and admired it for some time. It was easy to see any animal and try to transform into it, doing it as naturally as possible. Something more difficult was to copy other human beings, because they were given greater biological complexity. Although this is not exactly useful in many situations, it always made him wonder if he could do the same with other metahumans... But, of course, all that having the characteristic green.
This new form was different. Undoing all the genetic changes caused by the Sakutia virus and the serum created by your parents, proved to be as painful as it was slow to be achieved. However, the first time, he only kept it for a few minutes, due to the excruciating pain emitted by trillion cells, which refused to keep in this DNA structure. Over time, and especially the need for the past few weeks to stay in it for hours, the pain didn't bother him so much anymore, only needing a few five-minute trips to the bathroom to recover from time to time. And now he could live like a normal boy among people without being the center of attention because of his color. And not like any normal boy, but your old self.
Looking closely at all the details of his "new" face, he wasn't sure how he should feel. He knew he inherited his blond hair from his father and he had her mother's blue eyes, but what about the rest? Did he look more like him? Or more like her? Or a little bit of both? He couldn't tell and not knowing the answer was difficult, perhaps this form, this image, could be the only connection left with his parents. No photos were left, his memories were gradually fading away, leaving only a few good sensations from that time. But now he has his old self. A reminder of a life that could have been lived. A reminder of the people who are gone. A reminder of his biggest mistake ...
The ironic thing was that if it remembered how he lost his first family, the Green one reminded him of how he lost the other two.
Always starting in the eyes, the change process was relatively slow. The blue color gave way to the bright green and then advanced like a wave like a splash in the water. Eyebrows, nose, mouth were next. Then, the blond hair became green, and the ears pointed. And finally it spread to the rest of the body, talking about 10 seconds.
Now his day was officially over.
Although it was already late and he was tired, sleep did not come. In fact, it usually didn't come, because of all the noise in the city and, especially, from a region that was very active at night. Sometimes having a sensitive hearing sucks.
He sat at a small table he had to do his new hobby, drawing while turning on the small tube TV (yeah, it still exists). After a rough turning on that some beats wouldn't solve, he put on the news channel to see if anything interesting happened and then the GBS News logo appeared as well a very attractive anchor.
'She is not blonde but still very pretty,' he thought as he picked up his drawing material and continued where he left off.
"…after two weeks, the police have still not been able to find any of the patients who fled Arkham Asylum. And the police say they are still investigating how the escape proceeded, but there is still little information about it. Recalling that the incident left countless injured and three dead". The anchor paused indicating that she would change the subject. "Now, leaving Gotham and going to Washington, DC. Today, the President and Aquaman, ruler of Atlantis, have met at the White House to sign agreements between the two nations. This deal is treated as historic, because the US becomes the first country to officially recognize Atlantis' sovereignty. We have a person on site who has more information on the subject. Clark, what are the details of this astonishing agreement?" said the anchor, turning to a screen beside her.
"Well, Lois, as you already said, it is now official the United States is the first country to recognize Atlantis as a sovereign nation and world powerthanks to the President...," said the journalist, who seemed to be working out a little too much.
And so, Garfield would spend much of his evening with his concentration split between his hobby and the news. However, he also would fail to notice that he was being watched by a bird that was hanging in the building in front of his.
Flamebird, looking extremely surprised at her discovery, used binoculars to see the green boy. She went up the building with her hook to try to process what she had seen.
"I told you! He is Beast Boy from Teen Titans," she said with a slight happiness in her tone.
"You ain't sure, if it's him," retorted a voice from her communicator.
"Come on, Hero! How many people do you know who are green?" tried Flamebird playful.
"Are you kidding, right? Poison Ivy rings any bells? Or the Martians. Even that Moss-freaking monster that attacked the city a couple years ago."
"Do you mean Swamp Thing? He did that because his girlfriend was unjustly arrested and it was kind of romantic," the birdgirl added.
"If turning the entire city into a fucking swamp with endless mosquitoes and hallucinogenic potatoes is your idea of romance, well…hell shit, now I do know why you never got yourself a boyfriend," said Hero.
"I don't have time for romance, especially now, and if you are concerned I think he is not a… plant?" answered Flamebird. "So let me rephrase: How many people do you know can turn into green animals?".
"The Martians…," Hero deadpanned.
"Forget about the Martians, they don't even have ears and this guy is a elf," she said annoyed.
"They could if they wish," completed the Hero. "Besides, the information I have is Beast Boy can't morph into normal people".
"Now you got a point, but we don't know how extended his power is. I wonder if the other Titans know about this too…," wondered Flamebird.
"You speak like you are certain he is Beast Boy and can't be him," said Hero.
"And why is that?" asked Flamebird.
"The news says Beast Boy is missing…," answered Hero.
"And now I found him," interjected Flamebid plainly.
"The rumors say he is dead…," Hero deadpanned.
"Well, I am pretty sure he is not," interjected Flamebird. "But what exactly happened there?".
"Not sure. No public statement was made by the team, and… several Titan were spotted in the city in the last weeks, like Aqualad, Wonder Girl, Thunder and Lightning, and even Kole and Gnarrk," he paused. "And… they look like they're conducting some kind of search, according to some local newspapers. Probably searching for him".
"Do you have any guess about what happened?" asked Flamebird.
"I ain't sure, but or is in some kind of deep cover case mission that would make Batman himself proud, or they fought among themselves," said Hero.
"Fought among themselves?" inquired Flamebird
"Yeah, Nightwing appeared with a broken arm after the Beast Boy's missing. And there is not signal of destruction outside the Tower, which rules out the option of a invasion," he explained
"So let's talk to him," Flamebird concluded.
"You joking, right?".
"I am not, and why are you so against it?" asked Flamebird.
"Because… let's think first. If this guy is really Beast Boy, why did he have all the trouble of crossing the country and ended up here in first place? Why turn himself into a normal guy and live in a shithole like East End? Why were several Titans spotted? Let's face it, assuming he really is who you say he is, this guy is hiding and doesn't want to be found, making potentially dangerous," explained Hero.
"Back there he didn't look dangerous," interjected Flamebird.
"You ain't sure," said Hero.
"Hero…," she started. "You may be right, but I need to find HIM…," she waited for him to reply, but it didn't come. "We both know that everything we've done so far has been luck and we're not even close to getting anything that might indicate where he might be… We spent a whole month shooting in the dark and what we got? Dee and Dum knew nothing"
"…"
"You might be right… he may be dangerous, but I can't believe that. I can't believe someone that has been in Doom Patrol and the Titans, suddenly gave up. And the Titans, why all this secrecy? If he turned into a criminal, they would say. I think it is something more complicated than that." She paused and sighed lightly". "And I do want this boy to be Beast Boy, because the Beast Boy whom I've heard about has almost 10 years of experience in fighting crime which is more than twice as much as the two of us together have," concluded Flamebird.
Flamebird heard Hero sighed heavily, "… shit… I'm just worried, okay. We already have so many problems to deal with now and one more… but, I-I understand…just make sure you know what you're doing...if you think it's worth a shot, then I trust you, but just be careful".
"Thanks, Hero," said Flamebird.
"… so do you have any idea of how to approach him?", Hero finally accepted.
"Well, if he really is Beast Boy and doesn't want anyone to find him sooo… yeah I have an idea," said Flamebird.
"… I have a feeling I won't like it…"
THE END
Author's comments:
1 - For those who know little about comics, Beast Boy and Flamebird have a long partnership. They have already participated in three different groups (Titans West, Titans L. A. and New Young Justice), and in the last two, they were the core members. Despite having few stories from these teams, I liked the relationship between the two characters. They got closer at a time when both went through personal crises and helped each other to overcome them. Beast Boy gave up his hero life and left the Titans. And Flamebird was going through an existential crisis for a while. For that reason I found it interesting to add the Flamebird character here. A comic shows this relationship a little and also is good reading is Beast Boy Vol 1 (2000), written by Ben Raab and Geoff Johns, and illustrated by Justiniano.
2 – And who the fuck is Flamebird? Well, she is the first Bat-girl and NO, Barbara Gordon is the second one. the editors of Batman comic in 60s decided to create a romantic interest for Robin, having, as one reason, to dismiss the accusations that Batman and Robin were gay and they created both first Bat-girl and first Bat-woman. And through the decades that was the only reason the character existed, trying to get the attention of the first Robin. But fortunately after this Beast Boy comic, the character would gain new layers and her past was erased and rewritten.
