I already have the next couple of chapters written in a notebook, I just need to find the time to type them up.
They had both decided that they would keep everything regarding their budding relationship quiet for now and had remained the utmost professionals while at work, not that they had seen each other much there anyway due to working separate cases. Outside of work though, despite working overtime most nights and having no time to see each other let alone plan their date, they made sure they made time each day to call each other before they went to bed. They would chat about anything and everything. Sara had discovered that Catherine always stopped off at a small bakery on her way home from work and picked up a cream filled pastry every Tuesday, as a treat she had said. And had laughed when she had heard Lindsey in the background of one call shouting her mom to ask her to help put some fake tan on, when Catherine asked her why she was making such an effort for nobody to see Lindsey had sarcastically responded "you still do it and you haven't had a boyfriend in six months." To which Catherine had responded "how would you know?" Lindsey had scoffed and muttered something about her being a moody cow so obviously she hadn't been getting any. Sara had then heard the dull thud of something soft hitting something solid followed by a teenage girls laughter "so will you help me then?" Catherine had sighed dramatically and had agreed to help as soon as she was off the phone.
"I wonder where she gets her attitude from?" Sara had teased down the phone with a smirk on her face.
"I have no idea, must have been her dad." Catherine had equally teased back causing Sara to laugh down the line and mutter a "sure it is."
Seeing, or rather hearing, the mother and daughter duo teasing each other gave hope to Sara that maybe Lindsey was growing out of her grumpy, angsty, hate the world stage and was finally building her relationship with her mother back up. Something Sara knew had been bothering Catherine for a long while. Catherine had shared her fears with the team over the years that she was failing as a mother due to Lindsey's attitude and what seemed to almost be hatred to everything her mother said or did. But thankfully it seemed a light was finally shining and the pair were getting over their issues. And it made Sara happy to see. She had seen her share of bad families and knew Catherine's wasn't one, she did everything she could to try and make Lindsey's life safe and happy, even if the fiery blonde child hadn't seen it at the time.
A week, a very long one if you asked Sara, had passed without them being able to see each other. Catherine was stood in the break room midway through her shift watching as the coffee slowly dripped into the pot and muttered "stupid machine." she gave the top a whack and the coffee started to come out a little faster. She continued to watch the dark liquid and blinked lazily, a rather large yawn leaving her lips unexpectedly. She rubbed her tired eyes, being careful not to smudge her carefully applied mascara, and rolled her shoulders in a poor attempt to wake up her tired body.
The pot was almost full and she could almost taste the bitter liquid she hoped would bring her enough energy to make it through the rest of the shift when she felt a pair of strong hands rest on her shoulders and begin to apply some delicious pressure.
"you need to get some rest." Sara's voice murmured directly into Catherine's ear causing a shiver to run through her body.
"I would but there's this beautiful brunette keeping me up." Catherine's voice was equally as soft as Sara's.
Sara smiled and moved to rest back against the counter next to her, she watched as Catherine picked up the finally full pot of coffee, pour it into a mug and added cream and sugar before taking a sip with a satisfied sigh. Her eyes scanned over Catherine's face and was once again reminded how beautiful the other woman was, even when tired her eyes sparkled. Sara turned her head and quickly scanned the break room , the only other occupant being a lab tech at the far end on his phone, she turned back to her companion.
"Saturday night." She said in more of a statement than a question.
"What about it?" Catherine queried as she stirred her coffee again after adding a bit more cream.
"we both have the night off."
That caught Catherine's attention and she turned her face to the brunette with a confused look which Sara found adorable. "We do? I saw the rota, you're on shift that night."
Sara smiled and resisted the urge she had to kiss away Catherine's confused look and instead settled for turning her body to the side and very lightly running her fingers over Catherine's hand that rested on the counter. "I asked Griss for it off."
"And he let you? Won't that leave them short?"
"I pulled the overtime card," she shrugged. "he said unless there's a big case come in and I get all my paperwork done I can have it off." She watched the other womans face. "so I was thinking we could have that date." Her voice dropped to just above a whisper.
Realisation dawned as the confused look dropped from Catherine's features to be replaced by a genuine smile. "well in that case, text me a time and I'll make arrangements for Lindsey." Catherine turned her hand over on the counter and laced her fingers with Sara's.
"does she still have a babysitter?"
Catherine barked out a laugh. "Sara, she's seventeen. No, she doesn't but I still need to make sure she's got food and knows roughly what time I'll be leaving and getting back." She smiled at Sara. "I also like to go over the rules with her."
"rules?" Sara's knowledge of good parenting mostly came from movies.
"Yes, you know stuff like no boys, no parties, bed at a reasonable hour and such."
"do you really think she'd have a boy over?"
"God I hope not but if she's anything like her mother then yes. She would."
"Bit of a wild card huh, Cat?" Sara smirked teasing the other woman.
"You have no idea."
"Mmm, but I'd like to." Sara murmured stepping closer to the blonde as her eyes scanned down her body and back up causing Catherine to breath in sharply as her body responded to the brunettes blatant flirting.
Before Catherine had a chance to respond to Sara the door to the break room opened causing them to turn their heads towards the noise where they saw Grissom entering and heading straight towards them with his nose stuck in a folder. Sara lightly squeezed Catherine's hand before letting go and taking a step backwards, putting more space between to two women. Seeing the pot already with coffee in Grissom immediately began preparing his own cup. Over the top of his head Catherine glanced over at Sara to find her already watching her. Sara quickly winked at her causing a light blush to spread over her cheeks, grabbed her own folder from the countertop and exited the break room leaving a slightly flustered Catherine behind.
