Chapter 51: There is no place like home
I set a blanket down on the green grass getting everything assembled before Sam arrived. Today was his birthday, and I wanted to surprise Sam with a small picnic. We intended to go to the park for a walk, however before we left the Impala I lied to Sam saying I had an urgent phone call from Cheryl. Sam bought the lie and had a head start in walking the dog while I rushed to get the picnic set and quick outfit change from my casual clothes to a lovely sundress.
The basket was open. Two plastic champagne flutes ready, and a vanilla bean birthday cake out and ready. Man, I was afraid the cake was going to be ruin in the back of the Impala or spotted. Fortunately, Sam barely opens the trunk.
Anyway, I waited , wondering how long it would be till Sam comes searching for me. It has been a month since Jesse surprise visit. We showed him around Kermit, where the local places are and even a rodeo. When he went back to the motel. Sam did his usual maintenance job to help the manager out while I took care of Riot. Made sure he got his medicine and visited the doctor. Then I usually try to do normal things. Even helped a few hunters by phone on research. Otherwise, nothing else been going on.
Sure, once Riot was cleared by Dr. Richardson we mainly traveled around Texas even explored New Orleans and further down to Florida. What happened with the Leviathan just ended our taste for Adventure. Kevin was dead, much as it pains me to accept it, and Dean and Castiel…they are gone. My clairvoyant abilities couldn't track them. Let alone Sam and Dean made a promise to reach to each other. If either of them dies, the other will try to start a new life. Retire from hunting and all in general. So, honoring that promise we stopped hunting. Researching…never, it's in my blood. But picking up a gun and killing a monster is out of the question unless it was self-defense.
So that is what we did, mainly traveling around the south, exploring cities and areas. Months on the road, stopping at major cities and getting things off our bucket list. Spent a lot of time in Florida, thanks to the money we got from the Leviathan scandal, plus seeing other locations. Although we did cross paths with some old friends of ours in the hunter community. After many months we decided to settle down after all the travel. Even Riot wasn't enjoying the Impala. Almost had an accident.
Thank god the weather is on our side. Not too hot or cold, just right on a sunny day.
"Skylar!" Sam called out, crossing the bridge. "Skylar, this isn't funny. Skylar!"
I made a musical whistle which Riot responded with a bark before tracing my scent. Sam panicked and followed the Australian shepherd. "Riot…Riot!"
Not a second too soon, Riot was beside me. I have the shaggy dog a rub before he sat down on my lap. A moment later, a worried Sam made way then stopped surprised to see what was before him.
I opened my arms and smiled, "Happy Birthday!"
"What?" Sam gasped smiling while I chuckle. "What is this?"
"I believe it's called a Birthday cake," I teased. "C'mon, sit. Eat."
Sam continued to stand there amazed by everything. A few seconds later he came over and gave me a loving kiss. "I love you."
"I love you too." I murmured against his lips.
We barely get to celebrate our birthdays together. Usually, we mail each other cards or presents, a phone call, and that was that. Now we can officially celebrate together as a couple. No more distance or phone calls.
"Happy 29th birthday, Sam" I murmured.
"Thank you, Sky," Sam said rubbing his neck. "I completely forgot it was my birthday."
I chuckled and kissed his cheek.
"So, what do we have?" He asked.
"Well, I got us some BLT's, pasta salad, cheese and crackers, and a bottle of cheap champagne," I answered.
"Yum," He said.
We began to eat out lunch together. Everything was perfect, even doing the tradition of lighting the candles, singing the song, and having Sam make a wish and blowing them out. Everything was perfect, and soon we were laying down and kissing.
"How do you feel about buying a house?" Sam asked.
"A house?" I replied.
Sam cradle my cheek, "Yeah, a place we can call home."
"Sam?" I said softly. "I thought you enjoy traveling."
"I do, but…I would like to come to a place for all our travel." He explained. "We can start over. You and I, a place we can make our own, even Jesse could come and visit, have a room for himself. Maybe start your photography studio."
"And what about you?" I asked.
Sam smiled softly, "It would be nice to go back to school."
I couldn't help but smile with a nod. We deserve to have normalcy and nothing more than starting a home.
.o0o.
So that is what we did. We spent a few weeks searching for houses until finding one in the countryside. It was a two-story house with four bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, an attic and basement. There were five acres of land. Enough for landscapes and solitude. It took some time to put everything in my name since Sam was still a dead man walking. We did a lot of warding sigils, even made a mini bunkard for emergency. Otherwise it was a home.
Cheryl was generous to mail over my things. As that was happening, we bought some furniture and other things. Although, as we were unpacking I got a few calls from my college friends saying they wanted to come over and help out. I thought it would be nice to see old friends and said let me talk it over with Sam. He said sure that it would be nice to meet my friends. So, we settled a date.
I was so nervous, as time was counting down. Seconds thoughts came in, for Cheryl is the only one who knows Sam is a Hunter and a man who was supposed to be dead. Luckily, we managed to get him a new identity, social security card, and everything. So, it would be coincident if someone compares him to the FBI Sam Winchester.
Sadly, my friends were running late, as I was about to enter the living room, I saw Sam holding an old family album of the Harvelle's. He stopped at a picture of my childhood, one of the few images with William Harvelle.
"They say they will be here around five; there was traffic…"
"Uh, just deep breath," Sam assured standing up with a smile. "It's gonna be okay."
"I know," I sighed. "It's just this house; you …back to normal. Well, my friends are kinda crazy, and Derek can be protective sometimes. Is it too fast?"
Sam breathed, placing his hands on my shoulder, "We are making up for lost time." Then kissed me.
Serval minutes later there was a knock on the door.
I inhale sharply walking over to the door then turned to face Sam, "Don't talk about politics or superheroes. Can't have another Marvel vs. D.C again. And whatever you do, do not use the words moist or irregardless. Derick served in the military, and so no dark humor. Jase well, he's Jase."
Sam chuckled, "There goes my opener."
I smiled and opened the door. Not a second more I was dogpiled by all my college friends as they tackled me to the ground. A protest groan escaped my lips hearing the laughter's before we got up. There stood Derick, Jase, Cheryl, and Nina. We gave each other a proper hug. Derick lifted me up into the air spinning us around.
"Oh, Sky!" He said.
"Der, I'm gonna puke." I laughed.
Derick put me down and turned to face Sam, "So, who is this mysterious man?"
Sam was about to say something until Derick waltz on over to Riot. Everyone laughed, except for Sam a bit surprised. Derick started to spoil the shepherd with rubs as the dog licked him. "Who's a good boy? Man, you're beautiful."
"Hi, I'm Nina," the other woman said, with Hispanic roots. "Sorry about Derick, he works with dogs."
"None taken," Sam assured.
"And I'm Jase," the dark skin man said offering a hand, which Sam took.
I gave Sam a side hug, "Cheryl, Nina, Jase, and Derick; this is Sam Winchester."
"We already met," Cheryl assured with a smile.
"Yeah, we heard a lot about you," Derick said finally shaking Sam's hand.
"Not all bad, I hope," Sam replied nervously.
Derick laughed then looked around, "So, this is a nice place. The lawn could use a mow."
"Derick," Nina scolded.
"Awkward," Jase muttered.
"Probably because Skylar and Derick used to be a fling." Cheryl teased.
"Guys" I groaned embarrassed.
I should have taken it to consider how this could be awkward. Derick and I used to be friends with benefits for the summer and fall term until he met Nina. She is okay with it in the past, even teased us but knew Derick was hers since there was a ring on her finger. They got married a few years ago, a small, simple wedding before Derick decided to go back into the military this time a higher ranking. They were station in Japan before being sent to San Antonio, Texas.
Nina changed the subject, "Skylar, what do you say we get a drink. "
"Um, sure, we got some Beer, Ice tea, water-" I listed.
"anything cold would be great," Nina answered.
I nodded as us girls went to the kitchen to get the drinks ready.

Sam's POV
Sam stood nervously as he looked at Derick and Jase while the girls went to the kitchen. He was a bit nervous, he already knew of Skylar's past relationships. Especially he figured out Derick was her first. But right now, he didn't care. Was he concern to be recognized from the news, a little? But making an impression was more critical.
Jase took a seat and started petting Riot. Derick, on the other hand, was staring at Sam with a calculating look.
"Derick, um, Jase – I know this must be weird." Sam started. "Uh, you haven't seen Skylar in years, and now she's living with a guy you've never met."
"Skylar mentions you back in the day," Derick said. "Said you went to Sandford."
"I did," Sam said impressed.
"It's a good school."
"It is."
"So, what do you do now?"
The hunter hesitated, not prepared for that question. He had everything rehearsed when they have dinner, but not on the spot.
"I work at a motel in town," Sam said.
When they got back from their months of traveling, he came over to check on the Motel's kid who begged him for his help since the dad had to return for health reason. Not being one to refuse, he accepted it.
"Balancing the books?" Jase asked.
Sam chuckled before answering, "Uh, no. Maintenance mostly."
"Ah. That makes sense." Derick noted. "cause I got to say, Sam, you look like a fixer-upper to me."
Sam bit his lip and nodded.
"Awkward," Jase said.
Awkward indeed, Sam thought.
By dinner time they were around the table. Sam was surprised to see many combinations of food, some he hasn't seen since his college years. The friends were laughing at the stuff being served. As Skylar placed a giant bowl of Mac n' Cheese with hotdog slices.
Jase laughed, "You remembered."
Skylar saw his confusion and chuckled, "Back on Perdu, we would rampage our pantry and try to make any semi-edible food. Jase came up with this crazy combination with Kraft and Oscar Mayer."
"And we ate it every binge study night for exams," Jase said. "Especially when growing up in a military family."
"Alright, got it," Sam chuckled. "Hh, my father was in the marines."
"Jarhead, huh?" Derick replied.
"That's right. Uh, the second battalion, first marines, echo company." Sam described in full detail proudly. Although his childhood was rough, he still remembers some of the good all days, when his dad would tell him about the Marines.
"I always thought they were a little puffed up, myself," Derick commented. "But hey, what do I know. I'm just a GI."
Sam cleared his throat.
"You're my GI," Nina said placing a hand on Derick's shoulder. "But more of a dog face."
The girls went back to get the rest of the meal while Jase excused himself for the restroom. Derick looked at Sam with a severe look.
"I take it you never served," Derick said.
Sam shook his head, "No."
"See, I find that hard to believe," The soldier said. "cause I got to say, Sam, you got the look."
"The look?" Sam asked confused.
"The one a lot of guys get after they've been through the meat grinder – the one that lets you know they've seen a lot of crap they can't forget. The second their feet hit solid ground, they start running, and they don't stop—Not till they find something to hold on to."
"You think that's what I'm doing here?" Sam asked a bit offended. "Just holding on."
"I think the two of you are holding on to each other, yeah." Derick confessed. "because I can tell she is trying to move forward after what happened with Roman Enterprises. I don't blame her for taking off. Needing to run away and hide, the change of scenery…I know why she did it. The question is - what are you running from, Sam? Or are you just using her for the money?"
Sam took a deep breath, "I have known Sky since 2006. We've been friends ever since then, and for three years I have loved her. When she went missing, I went searching for her no matter what stood in my way. It pains me what she went through, but I am here for her no matter what. Her safety and happiness is what all that's matter."
The room was engrossed in silence. Both hunter and soldier were staring deep into each other's eyes. A moment later a smirked twitched on Derick's face, "That is all I need to hear."
A sigh of relief escaped Sam.
Jase came out, "Hey, is that your car outside, the Impala?"
"Yeah, it was my dad's," Sam answered.
"Man, the old man had good taste," Jase said, taking a seat smiling.
The girls came back with the rest of the food after that heated discussion everything went back to normal. Skylar and her college friends were sharing stories and laughing about their dorm experience. He never saw Skylar laughed so hard, practically embarrassed when Cheryl told humiliating stories that were normal. Once dinner was over, nine pulled out a scrapbook showing off pictures of their college years.
"Oh god, I remember that Halloween." Cheryl pointed out showing Skylar and Sam a picture from 2008.
"Yeah, we dressed up as Lock, Shock, and Barrel," Skylar said, then sighed. "Those were good times."
"Yeah," Cheryl said. "I wish Amber could be here to see us now."
"Sam," Jase agreed.
Sam recalled Amber, or at least her case. The poor girl accidentally being a victim of Jesse ability to alter reality. Cause of death, scratching her brains out when the boy she was babysitting put itching powder in her hairbrush.
"To Amber," Nina said raising her wine glass.
"To Amber," They all said taking a sip of wine.
Later one the gang left, except for Cheryl who was spending the night. She headed out to walk Riot leaving the two alone as they did the dishes. Skylar hugged Sam from behind.
"Thank you," Skylar said.
"You're welcome," he said with a smile.
"Sorry about Derick, he can be a little protective sometime." She mumbled. "Back in college with Ellen and Jo's death…he and the others helped me through mourning."
Sam only nodded as he turned around and hugged her. "You have me now."
And always will, Sam said.
Sorry, needed a break from Skylar and let Sam deal with his conflict. Next chapter will be better.
