Chapter 54: Cold Shoulder
I sat in the passenger seat of the Impala. Sam was demoted to the back seat of the car while Dean drove. We were heading to Texas; I was not going to waste money on a Greyhound to get back home. Also, the boys to run away from a huge explanation. So, after stocking the Impala with supplies from the auction, we headed off. Although, as we go through the artifacts, it seems some of the gods took what they could or Athena keeping some artifacts for her museum.
Anyway, back in the Impala was tension. As much as I love seeing Dean alive…there was a lot of explaining. Both boys are in deep trouble. Sam for lying to me and Dean trying to kill an innocent soul. It has been known, that if the vessel has not been damaged for death, then it is exorcism firth then killing.
"Either one of you starts talking, or I'll flip a coin," I warned.
Silence.
I took out a coin.
Just as I was about to flip it, Dean spoke, "When I got back, Sam told me you two were retired. Stopped looking for Kevin and hunting. That is when I went through the burner phones and learned, after a few weeks Kevin escaped Crowley, spent six months trying to contact Sam."
I felt guilty since I didn't give Kevin my number. Also, Dick deleted all my accounts on social media and email. So, any source of communication would have been gone between Kevin and me.
"So, doing some computer skills Charlie taught us, we found Kevin in Centreville, Michigan checking on his girlfriend, Channing. Found him in a church and learned that the Tablet Crowley found was the demon tablet and have him translate. However, the kid found a way to send demons back to hell but also another thing."
"And what is the other thing?" I asked.
"A way to send demons back to hell," Dean answered. "And now we can't because he and his mom ran off."
I sighed, 'We will see him soon."
"Your turn, Sammy," Dean said.
I stared at the rearview mirror staring at Sam who sat there and was facing down.
"Time to fess up," Dean continued. "We both want an explanation."
Sam remained quiet.
Dean slammed his fist on the horn starling everyone. "You told me, now you tell her."
"I didn't want to lose you," Sam mumbled.
"Louder!" Dean yelled.
"I didn't want to lose you, Sky," Sam spoke up. "When you were dying…I couldn't bear the thought. Dean and I made a promise that if either of us was gone, then we stop hunting."
"But is after we know for sure," Dean reminded.
"So, you gave up," I growled.
"I just couldn't," Sam said "I didn't want you hurt again by the Supernatural. And I thought Crowley killed Kevin too. So, I lied, to protect you."
"Is Tara even real?" I demanded.
"Yeah, Tara was a friend of our Dad, hunt with him back in the day," Dean confirmed.
I nodded.
It was getting late, and we pulled over at a motel. We got two bedrooms, as I took one and the boys shared their own. In the room, I changed out of the dress and into some spare clothes that were kept in the Impala. Afterward, I sat on the couch comprehending what has been said in the Impala.
We could have saved Kevin a year ago. He did, in fact, escape Crowley after a few weeks. Damn it, if only Sam kept his fucking damn phone we could have saved him. If he just continued his damn phone on and didn't leave it at Rufus's cabin. If we had that cellphone, we would have picked Kevin up and kept him safe. Saved Mrs. Tran from the demons who were watching her…and things would have been beautiful. They would have been safe. Not living a year in fear and worry.
Also, that damn angel. Samandriel better had kept his promised and returned Alfie back to Ohio. If any harm has come to my friend, the heavily host will have something else to fear.
There was a knock on the door.
I got up and looked at the peephole to see Dean. Opening the door, I let Dean inside. He was quiet, analyzing the room with caution as if checking every corner with his eyes while remaining still.
"What do you want, Dean?" I asked.
"Just came to check up on you," He answered.
"As you can see, I'm fine."
"I can see that," Dean said, then sighed.
"I'm not going to forgive him that easily," I said, arms crossed.
"Wouldn't blame you," he assured.
I walked over to the bed and sat down.
"I didn't stop looking," I mumbled staring at the laminated floor. "Once I was cleared from the hospital, we went to Columbus to get my things. We—I spent months looking. Using all my sources in the Hunter and Researcher community. Everyone was on search mode to find you and Kevin. Going through what remained of Bobby's books about Leviathans and purgatory."
"Skylar," he breathed.
"You don't get it," I said. "Dick messed up my clairvoyance. It was like I'm back at square one. Knowing here and there. But you and Castiel, you just vanished. My clairvoyance couldn't tell if you were alive or dead. It was like you never existed. As months went by…though keeping hope since there was nobody…a part of me considers you gone."
I pulled up my pant leg to reveal the tattoo of loved ones: Bill, Ash, Ellen, Jo, Sam, Bobby, and Dean. Dean's last name that was written. Dean's eyes widen, for the only family who has fallen is written on my skin.
"I seriously thought I lost another brother," I said.
Dean inhales deeply, then exhaled before sitting down on the bed.
"I may have retired from hunting, but I never stopped my first job," I told him. "When a hunter needed research, I gave them any information they needed to know."
"I know," Dean sighed. "You were born in this life. But you're only human."
I nodded.
"I'm sorry," he apologized.
"For what?" I asked.
"For blaming you on Bobby's death. It was uncalled for." He explained. "He wouldn't want you dealing with the leviathans. Though strong you are…they had the upper hand. The last thing he said to us…before burning the flask…was to protect you. We failed that."
We both hailed a heavy sigh.
"We're a bunch of fuck-ups, aren't we?" I asked.
"Yeah, we are."
After we gave a dark humor chuckle. Nothing was said after that, or at least revolving around Purgatory. I could tell he was struggling with PTSD. Much worse when he escaped from hell. If what the leviathans have said was right, it was survival of the fittest. A year of killing and running.
So, I told him about the house and my small private photography business. Even told him about Riot the dog.
Dean groaned, "So that is who I smelled."
I chuckled.
"The rules were simple," Dean grumbled. "You don't take a joint from a guy named Don, and there are no dogs in the car!"
"But Riot is different," I pouted.
Dean shook his head.
.o0o.
It would be a two-day drive when arriving at Kermit Texas. There Dean got a look of the property and was impressed that hush money bought this place. Even more impressed with the number of sigils and traps scattered around, almost like Bobby's junkyard. Although, it was hilarious when he met Riot.
"You, stinker," Dean growled at the dog, who whimpered from the intimidating glare.
Breaking the dominance lecture, I escorted Dean to his room. I told him he could do whatever he liked except punching holes. Leaving him alone, I went to my room. Sam was there. He tried to speak. However, I ignored him. Giving the tall hunter the cold shoulder. As of right now, he has a ton of making up to do. A year, I spent months on searching for Kevin, and the rest of the year mourning of what could have been his death.
Thus, Sam was on the couch.
Big time.
Two days later, Dean said he was going back to hunting.
"Take Sam with you," I said.
"Sky-" Sam started.
"No, you are out." I told him. "You fucked up."
"But…"
"No buts, you lied to me for an entire year," I said. "I trusted you, and instead of helping me in finding Kevin, you faked his death. You are no better than Crowley. So, I better see you in the Impala tomorrow morning, or I'm getting my shotgun."
Dean smirked, "She got you good."
I turned to face Dean, "If you need a researcher. Don't be afraid to call."
"Yes, Ma'am," Dean assured.
The following day, I gave Dean a new primary phone, adding him to the plan. A card to use, so he didn't need to rob from the credit card company, and some supplies. Especially the miniature apple pies I made the other day. Dean was a full eye when seeing them that he gave me a real bear hug.
Sam, on the other hand, stood by and watched.
With nothing else to say, I watched them leave by nine o'clock in the morning. Watching the Impala going back to active hunting business. Although they were in search for Kevin, they will not find him until he wants to be perceived.
.o0o.
Sam and Dean were driving up North anywhere. As Dean drove listening to the same rock music from their dad's collection, Sam pulled out a small velvet box. He popped open the lid to reveal a small engagement ring. A silver band with a diamond in the center. It was simple, nothing fancy.
"Give her time," Dean assured.
"I don't think so," Sam sighed. "I screwed up."
"That you did," Dean agreed. "That you did."
Sam hoped Skylar can forgive him. Once they find Kevin and close the Gate of Hell he would be officially done. He was tired of hunting. He wanted a normal life again. When this is all over and done, he can pray for a family with Skylar.
He looked out the window, remembering the day Skylar surprised him on his birthday.
Sorry for the long wait. My muse wanted to work on other stories and college being tense.
Next chapter will be longer.
