In a far away universe, one far different than the SEGA video games that you're familiar with, there lay many different dimensions, or "zones" rather…
One in particular was known as the "Special Zone", where the mystical seven Chaos Emeralds were hidden and guarded by the mysterious Feist, a panda of enormous proportions…
But what stood before him was an entirely different individual… one that didn't quite "belong" in this world… His appearance was clouded in dark shadows, even for such a colorful world he was currently standing in. Only his silhouette could be seen, despite him being a being of pure light. Any other features he held were shrouded in the dark shadows surrounding him. What could be made out, however, was his height, roughly between six feet or six and a half. The color of his eyes could be seen, one red and the other golden.
"Feist does not approve of this," the giant God-like panda droned, folding his arms in half, "Regardless of how important this deal is."
"I assure you, friend," the stranger replied, "That this deal is for the good of all Mobius. Additionally, you shall receive something just as valuable to take the place of what you are giving me."
He presented in his hands a shimmering Golden Mask. Its value of power had seemed great, as Feist was actually reluctant to take it.
"Take it," the stranger assured, "It is a most worthy compensation for what you are giving me." As he said this, seven different colored gems began to float behind him.
Slowly but surely, Feist took hold of the mask. "Feist thanks you for the even exchange," he said lowly, "Too often do mortals fool and cheat him for his possessions."
"You're doing me a great service, Feist," the stranger bowed, "You deserve nothing but the greatest respect. And now…" He stood back up as he was suddenly engulfed in a bright white light, "It is time to set forth my goals."
The flash disappeared in a cloak of shadows. Once it had vanished, the stranger was gone as well.
All alone once more, Feist looked down at the Golden Mask that he was given. He took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. "Feist still does not approve…" he mumbled to himself, "Though his duties lie only here, do he dare wish harm to others..?"
He then lifted his head, making a decision, and raised his arm upward. Woosh! With a wave of his hand, the universe he inhabited flashed brightly. Once everything died down, the colorful world was not nearly as bright. The sky, once filled with twinkling stars that were gateways into the Special Zone, were now dull and solid. Any possible entrance to the zone had been eliminated.
"Now no mortal will ever give Feist the option to end all of mankind ever again…"
New Megaopolis.
It was once Robotropolis, the home of the villanous Dr. Ivo Robotnik, who ruled all of Mobius with an iron fist. And even before that, it was Mobotropolis, the kingdom ruled benevolently by the Acorns.
Now it had been taken over and become the current headquarters of Dr. Eggman, a other-worldly equivalent of the late Dr. Robotnik, who took over as the main enemy of the Freedom Fighters. He didn't quite rule the whole world, but he did prove to be just as dangerous.
In his quarters sat the familiar, obese would-be dictator of Planet Mobius, Doctor Eggman, facing his computers. His hands were folded together and resting upon his chin as he himself was deep in thought.
"I conquered Mobius before," he muttered to himself, "Another version, of course, but I won nonetheless. Surely I could think of something spectacular that I could to finally defeat those pesky Freedom Fighters and rule over Mobius once more. What is it about this version that they keep managing to win…?"
He slumped over slightly, exasperated. "It shouldn't be this hard," he mumbled loudly, "This war is nothing more like a game of chess. I just have to be smart with my next move…"
"Perhaps I could give you a hint, Doctor Eggman…"
Eggman shot straight up at the sudden, mysterious voice. However, he felt himself unable to move… The sound of voice itself wasn't frightening, but the presence it gave completely paralyzed him with fear.
"Do you fear me, Eggman..? I only wish to help…"
Eggman managed to will himself to glance around the room in search of the voice. "Who… who is that..?" he meekly asked, "How did you get past my defense systems?"
"I have my ways…"
The room began to darken as shadows suddenly filled the area. Right before Eggman, a tall figure materialized. It was the same bring from the Special Zone.
"St… stay right there…" Eggman spat in fear, "S… swat bots…! Come quickly…!"
Alas, his voice was so low that certainly no robot had heard his orders… Not to mention he completely forgot to push the button to summon them anyway.
"Do I scare you, doctor?" the shadowy figure asked.
Eggman attempted to answer, but couldn't form any words.
"As to be expected," the figure replied. The smirk could be heard in his sinister voice. "You do nothing to intimidate me. You whose nerves are shook at my mere presence… I could easily crush you with a mere thought right here and now."
Eggman cringed loudly in fear.
"But I won't."
He let out a loud sigh of relief.
"Since you are, after are beneficial to me."
The dictator then raised his head curiously, though fear still plagued the back of his mind. "Who... are you anyway..?" he sputtered, "Where did you come from? And why are you playing these games with me?"
The stranger chuckled at the word 'games'. This worried Eggman a tad…
"I wouldn't ask questions if I were you," the shadowed figure replied, "I may need you, but I could destroy you if I must." His demeanour then lightened up slightly. "After all, you mustn't look a gift horse in the mouth."
"What do you mean?" asked Eggman.
The stranger raised his arms to the air. Eggman stepped back, worried at what would happen, but was shocked to see seven colorful gems materialize between them…
"The Chaos Emeralds?!" he cried.
"They are yours," the stranger gestured.
The fear in Eggman was subsiding. There remained some doubt, but it was mostly overpowered by his pleasure of having all seven Chaos Emeralds in his grasp. As he took them into his arms, he looked over to his benefactor. He was truly powerful and could strike fear with his appearance alone…
And luckily, he wanted to be his ally!
Eggman grinned to himself. Why think of an ultra powerful scheme when luck just landed in your lap?
But in a split second, that fear came rushing back as the room was shrouded in darkness once more. The stranger loomed over a panicked Eggman. "But don't get too excited," he droned, "I am doing all this for my own reasons." He pointed an accusing finger towards the doctor, "Truthfully, Eggman, I don't like you at all. I despise any and all versions, in any way, shape, or form. If I could, I would end your miserable life right now and save everyone in the world all the trouble."
Eggman cowered back in fear.
"Be lucky that I don't," the stranger hissed, "For I am a chronicler of history, and you shall get to observe how it will all play out… for now."
A gust of wind blew through as the room somehow managed to get even darker, covering the form of the stranger.
"Don't make me regret letting you live…"
The darkness subsided, and Eggman found himself in his quarters all alone once more.
Eggman stood there for a good long moment, taking in what just happened. The fear left along with the stranger, but his nerves were still shook. That man was far more powerful than he imagined if just being there was enough to instill such feelings.
For a moment, Eggman could not comprehend the situation. He had no idea who that person was or what he even looked like for that matter, and why he hated him so much. Of course, practically all of Mobius hated him as well, but at least he knew those reasons… But this strange being… coming out of nowhere, never revealing himself, never answering anything, giving Eggman exactly what he wanted despite hating his guts…
There were too many questions, and as such too many risks…
But then he looked down at the Chaos Emeralds, still nestled in his arms… and gave a wide, cocky grin. On second thought, those risks are definitely worth taking!
He reached over and hit a communication switch. "Snivley! My quarters! NOW!"
Eggman stood from his seat, admiring the seven gems. They glew brightly as they let out a soft aura. Yup, they were definitely the real deal. The stranger may have a mysterious agenda, but he wasn't lying when he said they were a gift to him!
"Y… yes sir..?" Snivley trembled slightly as he entered the room.
"Why so worried, my dear Snivley?" Eggman chimed as he spun around to show his nephew/servant what he was holding.
Snivley let out a small gasp. "Th… the Chaos Emerald?!" he cried, "But how, sir?! We haven't detected any warp zones that lead to the Special Zone as of late!"
"Sit down, Snivley," Eggman ordered, "It's a strange story…"
Snivley sat as his uncle explained what had just happened a moment ago with the mysterious figure, who despite admitting to hating Eggman and wanting him very much dead, still presented him with all seven Chaos Emeralds with nothing in return, other than to become a forger of history…
"Are you sure this is wise, sir?" Snivley asked in apprehension, "This… creature… he obviously has an agenda of his own. It sounds like he's using you as a pawn."
"He gave me the means to achieve my goal, Snivley," Eggman replied, "Obviously he knows I won't use these emeralds for the good of mankind. Clearly he wants me to use them for my own benefit, or he wouldn't have given them to me at all."
He turned to the smaller man, "Here's the thing about history, Snivley. It hasn't been written yet… and I intend to write it in favor of myself." He chuckled to himself. If anything, I'm the true chronicler of history here!"
Eggman gave a sinister grin. "This war… this game... just changed in my favor."
