Chapter 4

I shot up from my bed in a cold sweat, one of the voices that haunted me, had showed up in my dream. But as uncomfortable that those occurrences were, the worst thing about It was that I was getting used to it. Looking over at my clock, I saw it read 4:30, which was about an hour and a half earlier than I usually woke up.

Knowing that I wasn't going to calm down enough to get more sleep, I got up from my bed. Looking around I take the sight of the room I had been living in for most of my life. I didn't know when, or if I was going to come back here, so I had packed what few things that had meaning to me. Walking over to a small desk, I take the last of my personal items yet to be packed.

It was a small ice white ring, completely plain looking, but it had been in my possession for about ten five years now. I had gotten it on my time in the field, on a recovery mission I southern vale. I was only supposed to be there to see how a battle struck village would look. While there I had snuck away from the adult who was supposed to show me around the damaged town, and while walking I had stumbled upon a young girl sitting by herself, she couldn't have been older than seven years. I knew that all survivors had been taken to the town hall for protection so in was very surprised to see someone on their own.

Not knowing what to do about her, I did the only thing I could think about, I talked.

"Erm.. everyone is supposed to be at the center" I smoothly got out.

She looked at me, clearly not hearing me walk up to her. She only looked at me for a couple of seconds before looking back down at the ground.

"Are you lost?" I ask "because I can take you back to the others if you want" I say, quickly becoming unsure of what to do in this situation.

The girl only looked at me again before nodding her head. I took a full look at her and saw her clothes were all dirty, I didn't know what happened to her and I was slowly feeling a small amount of dread building in my stomach ´why would a small girl be out here on her own?`

"I don't know where I am" the girl croaked out, her voice sounding rough. How could she not know? It wasn't that big of a town.

"Well… do you know where you live?" I asked her, getting more and more concerned.

The little girl shook her head "my dad and I are always going to new places, but we haven't been here before" she tells me.

That at least made a little sense to me, her father was probably a merchant crossing through when they got caught in the middle of all the chaos. "do you know where your dad is?" I ask her.

The young girl shaking her head again to my fear.

"Well maybe he's at the town hall, and if so he's probably very worried about where you are" I tell her, her face finally showing some emotion. "would you like me to take you there?" I ask.

She nods her head, this time with more enthusiasm. She stands up and I offer her my hand, just to show her she could trust me. She takes it and as we began walking towards the town hall. I look at her and tell her.

"My name is Fair, what's your name?"

Meeting up with the surviving citizens, I was about to ask if she could see her father, when she rushes ahead.

"Dad!" she yells, hugging a short man that looked to be in his late thirties.

"Oh thank Oum you're alright" the man says crouching down to hug his daughter tightly.

Looking on I couldn't help but smile. Even with destruction all around them they were at least together, I had been fearing the worst for her, but I was very happy to see that I was wrong. No child should grow up without a parent.

Seeing the girl looking back to me while speaking to her father, I saw him stand up and walk over to me.

"Thank the brothers for your help young man" he says, clearly also having feared the worst.

"No need, just doing what I had to do" I say back with a smile. Truly happy that nothing had happened to either of them.

"If only the rest of these people did the same, I would truly feel safe in this world" he tells me sounding a bit sad at the end. I decided not to question him and tell him that I was just happy for them.

"Here my friend, please take this as a sign of my eternal gratitude" the man held his hand out, showing a small white ring. "this ring has been me for a long time and has brought me luck on my travels.

"No no no I can't accept anything for just doing my job" I answered back, confused at his need to reward a soldier.

"Please my daughter is all I truly have left, if anything had happened to her, I wouldn't know what to do with myself" he tells me, still emotional.

Not fully knowing what to do in this situation I simply thank him for the gift and put in on.

The ring shined in the morning sun and though plain, was still incredible beautiful. Feeling a tuck on my sleeve I look at the girl who seemed to want my attention.

"Thank you" she simply says with a smile.

I smile back at her "you're welcome"

Smiling at the memory, I think about how important that encounter really was for me. Whenever I question whether what I'm doing is the right thing, I look at the ring and remember the people I'm during it for.

Closing the door behind me, I slightly adjust the small backpack I had slung over my shoulder. Remembering having been told to pack lightly I had only two additional sets of clothes, a couple of photos to remember my time here, and a small bag with toiletries.

I head off towards the landing pads located outside the building I was in. I was informed that we were taking a bullhead directly to the general's office to avoid traffic. Walking outside I see jasmine waiting by what I presumed was our ride.

"There you are, I was about to call" jasmine says as she spots me.

"Calm down alright, i'm still on time" I respond with a small smile, I was glad to see her back to her usual happy-go-lucky self.

"You kids ready to go or what?" a voice interrupts, I look over to see it was the pilot, clearly wanting to be done playing taxi.

"Yeah yeah we're coming" Jasmin respond's slightly snarky to the pilot. "You ready Fair" she looks at me expediently.

Turning around I look back at the place I had called home for so many years, for some reason I had a feeling that I wasn't going to see this place again, at least not anytime soon.

Turning back around I look at Jas before nodding "let's go"

As we sit down, we look at each other shortly, as if to make sure we were both ready for what was to come, there was no backing down now.

The flight was short, only about fifteen minutes in total. The pilot had landed just outside a big tower and told us to get out. We did so and after the grumpy pilot had left, we took a second to simply stare at the gigantic building in front of us. You could see all the skyscrapers from base but being up close looking up was just a completely different feeling.

"What are we waiting for, lets go" Jas said excitedly. Few things truly faced that girl. I shook my head at the thought and followed her inside.

Entering what must have been the lobby, we decided to just ask the receptionist if they knew where we had to go.

"Excuse me" I say to the person at the desk. It was an elderly woman who was typing away at her computer. "yes?" she asks "what can I do for yo-" she pauses as she looks at us surprised, probably not used to seeing teenagers at such a place. She coughed into her hand and finished her sentence.

"We have a meeting with general ironwood scheduled in about ten minutes" I tell her. She once again seemed surprised at the fact that these young people were supposed to meet the general of all people. she taps away on her computer and ask us "are you from the intel division?"

"That's right" Jas answer "the general wanted to talk with us specifically" she says almost pumping her chest up along with her words with a proudful look in her eyes. I didn't want to be the one to spoil her mood by reminding her that, that wasn't entirely the truth, so I just kept my mouth shut.

The woman seeming more and more impressed informed us that the general was on his way here from the atlas huntsman academy, and that he would be a bit delayed. "if you take the elevator to the 99'th floor there would be a small area where we could wait for the general's arrival.

Thanking the lady, we walk towards and enter the elevator. We press the button saying "99" and wait for the doors to close. Just as they were about to a foot stops them and the doors open again.

I look up and see that it was a young woman who had stopped the doors with her high heeled shoes. She stood at about my own height and was wearing a long white coat, her hair as white as her coat. She looks at us for a second before stepping inside the elevator and pressing the button for the 86'th floor.

After the doors closed properly, the mysterious woman looked at us with an observing eye. Starting at our feet and going all the way up to our heads noting our military uniforms, she spoke up out of nowhere.

"It's not often children come here, what business are you here for?" she ask us in a commanding tone, I see Jas having trouble not answering back with a sarcastic comment about the ´children` part, so I decided it was best for me to speak on behalf of us both.

"We have been sent her to meet with general ironwood at the generals behalf" I answer the woman, making sure not to seem intimidated despite her ´ice cold` stare.

"And why would the general need to talk to two… cadets" the woman ask again, I wasn't sure if she was trying to be insulting but I wasn't going to act on it.

Unfortunately, Jas was not the same "hey! We are not cadets we were asked here-" I quickly give a look that tells her to shut it and let me handle it.

I looked back at the woman who seemed slightly surprised that someone would tack back to her like that, but I quickly get her attention again.

"Excuse my partner here. We are a part of the intel division and we were requested by the general himself" I answer calmly, hoping Jas hadn't pissed the clearly higher ranked woman.

The woman in question lifts an eyebrow at me, not expected me to say that our presence were on ironwoods command. But before she could ask/interrogate us further, the elevator door opened back up. We had arrived at the woman's stop.

"I see" she simply says before walking out of the elevator and down the corridor we had stopped at. She continued walking without looking back, but I kept an eye on her until the doors closed once again.

I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding, as I look at Jasmine, who seemed slightly embarrassed at her outburst. "sorry" she says, but I could see she was holding back a small grin. I shook my head at her, not intending to dwell on this anymore.

Shortly the doors open for the second time, we had arrived at the floor we were instructed to go too. As we step out, I take a look around my surroundings, we had arrived in a small corridor with two big wooden doors at the end, assuming that to be the general's office, we walk over to a pair of chairs near the elevator we had stepped out of. Sitting down I slowly start to feel my nerves showing up. In just a few moments we would be given our "secret mission" and I was equally excited as I was terrified. Excited at the prospect of being tasked with more important missions. Yet terrified at what could possibly be so secret that the general couldn't use any of his own men.

We both sat in silence, I think Jas figured that I needed a minute alone with thoughts. I'm happy she's here with me, I don't think I tell her how important she is too me, since yesterday I've been thinking how big a help she has been just by being who she is. Always down to talk or listen, she was the most dependable person I knew, I can only hope she thinks I've been there for her the same way she has for me.

"Are you ready" I look over and ask.

"Defiantly" Jas responds confidently.

We continue waiting, every minute seemed like an hour, painful was a light way to describe it. Every twenty seconds I would look at my watch, when finally the sound of the elevator arriving once again hit my ears. I look at Jasmine and quickly signal for us to stand.

When the doors opened, we finally saw him, Ironwood. The general was wearing a white overcoat, with a gray undercoat, a red tie and white glove on his right hand. He had a suit pants with the same color as his coat that were tucked into a pair of silver boots. His face was clean shaven and his hair completely black.

We immediately saluted the man, who raised his eyebrow in return, seemingly mildly surprised at us being there before a brief look of recognitions flashed his face alongside a small smile.

"At ease" his deep voice spoke "you must be Solomons agents" he stated rather than asked.

"Yes sir, agent Fair and agent Jasmine reporting" I respond with as much confidence and respect I could muster, seeing him in person was not as intimidating as my nerves had built it up to be, but the man's aura still commanded a great deal of respect.

"I'm happy you could come on such short notice, let's talk further in my office" Ironwood simply says, reaching his arm out to the doors leading to general's personal office.

"Yes sir" I simply respond, letting the man walk ahead of us, I take a small look at Jas who flashed a grin at me, maybe this wasn't going to be that hard after all.

And scene. The mission will be explained to our heroes in the next chapter, and they will be sent out to "hopefully" see some action. in case you were unsure, yes that was Winter in the elevator, i simply wanted a different way for the characters to meet instead of the usual "at ironwoods side" i also just wanted to show that she isn't glued to the man like a puppy. i'm planing on her to be a bigger faction in this story

That's all, thank you
