Heartbeat Frequency
Jiro looked at the list of acceptable heroic agencies; and there was one that made her breathing hitch slightly. The Frequency Agency was on the list, it was just after midnight in the United Alliance Dorms. Mina was definitely asleep below her; Hagakure was out of it. In fact, the only person who could possibly overhear her was Sero Hanta, Cellophane, who was on her right.
She woke up her pc and placed her headset on. Upon opening the search engine, she quickly entered Frequency Hero Agency and opened up the website; there was a number on the webpage after clicking on the hyperlink she ended up in a call. She'd heard of Frequency in passing from Midoriya; who'd been scrolling on his phone.
The call was picked up by a young boy, around five, he looked at Jiro "Uncle, someone's clicked on the number." With that the boy melted into the background camouflaging himself. Jiro was impressed; then her eyes widened and she fought back the desire to blush and pale. The boy's uncle was pale…like Midoriya pale, his green eyes dull and lifeless and his hair was a mess…he looked like an old punk who hadn't aged well at all. "This is Frequency?"
"Yup. You are? Codename…I don't do given names."
"Hearing Hero: Earphone Jack."
"What do you want?"
"You're a Hero, right?" Jiro retorted calmly.
Frequency barked out a laugh "At one point…why?"
"I found your Hero Agency, I wanted to know…"
"…If I'd train you. The answer is no Earphone Jack, if there's anything else, goodnight." Like that the call ended. Jiro slammed her head back into her chair and resolved to deal with it tomorrow, maybe Frequency needed a reality check.
(Next Morning)
"Aizawa-sensei." Jiro called as the lunch bell rang.
"Yeah?"
"Do you know of a Hero by the name Frequency?" The purple-haired girl asked her homeroom teacher.
"Doesn't ring a bell; got a description of him? Why?"
"Little older than me, messy unkept black hair, pale skin…very pale bit Midoriya…" She whispered Midoriya's name quietly to avoid embarrassing him about it "…oh and very hard green eyes."
"I didn't know he was a Hero. He sounds much like a bar-man that Heroes know; we have evidence to lock him up for Vigilantism for at least sixteen years, but we can't prove it. Why?"
Jiro sighed "I know I'm…not the best at physical combat, I rely on my quirk too much and I have no idea how to effectively use my quirk without being static…So when you announced we needed reputable Heroes and he was one the list…" She trailed off.
Aizawa nodded "I'll get you a second chance at an interview; it is my job I mean as a member of UA. Although if he dismisses you find someone else; Death Arms gave you a brilliant review; don't knock yourself to harshly, you're doing well, you could do better but then everyone can do better."
"Sensei thank you." The capture scarf ruffled slightly, and Aizawa slouched off.
The day ended and Aizawa swiftly departed UA. He had a cranky hero to persuade, thankfully his target wasn't playing hard to find. The hero known as Frequency was watching over a playground "Frequency."
Frequency sighed "What can I do for you…"
"Eraserhead." Aizawa replied.
Frequency nodded "You're here because of someone; one of your pupils…probably Earphone Jack? Don't answer, the fact you turned up answers that. I will hear you out, why you want Earphone Jack to do her work study with me."
Aizawa sighed "I see potential in her…You can channel your own natural frequency of your muscle movements into energy blasts, enhance your hearing and a few other bits."
Frequency nodded "Coming from you, Eraserhead, that's something. But no, I will not train your student. Regardless of potential, I'm not a teacher. I'm not a hero, if I was a hero; I'd have side-kicks and maybe an actual office."
"But you filled…"
"I filled out what I needed to with the Japanese Government. No-where in the law does it say I have to use my hero-licence, I only got the damn thing to clean up someone else's shit. So, no Eraserhead, I will not train Earphone Jack, mainly because I'm no hero…I don't have anything worth teaching."
Aizawa snorted "I can hear it in your voice. You may not want to be a hero, but you do know that all your information you've given me does label you a potential vigilante."
"And I care…?"
"UA took you in remember. You also listed us as Emergency contacts for yourself and Godson. You'd be looking at time in Tartarus and a high There is a chance of you not seeing your Godson again; I'm not looking to make you do this but…if you want your 'second chance' as you've told Mic, Midnight and Myself, this is it. Plus, you were right."
Frequency stopped "About?"
"Kamino…you were right. You were so right, you even predicted the events and even dialogue…There's a war coming."
Frequency sighed "Fucks sake. I leave one to get sucked into another."
Aizawa grinned "My thanks Frequency."
(Next Day, Saturday after School)
"Hey, hey, Jiro…" It was Kaminari, Jammingyay. Jiro looked up from her phone.
"Yeah?"
"You want…" The electric teen began as her phone rang.
"Earphone Jack?" She'd put it on loudspeaker; the entire class turned.
"Yeah…"
"This is the Resonation Hero: Frequency…I've, reluctantly changed my mind, decided to give you an 'impress me week'. You've got one week to make me take you on for your Work Study."
Jiro nodded "Yes sir. Where…" She was caught off guard as a vibrant blast of energy slammed into her, catapulting her to the floor. She rolled to her feet, clumsily dodging another blast of energy.
Her jacks lashed out; hardened from her training camp. She smirked as she elicited a sharp series of curse words "Spatial awareness, is a failure…Combat anticipation is acceptable…that trick with your jacks…very good. What else do you have?"
Jiro growled, there was another cone of sound heading towards her; sounding distinctively rock or metal. The only thing near her was Denki's new guitar amp, her jack slammed into it; and she dived to turn it on.
Frequency revealed himself, wearing a hero costume to the Class of 1-A their jaws dropped. There were black pants, the knees were gone; there were rips and tears making them resemble something more like shorts; there was a black and purple flak-vest and bracers with vents on; all of these were cracked, dinged and looked very much like the hero wearing them. He watched with a smirk beneath his mouth, he wasn't stupid, he had requested the files after all. Yes, for all his genuine reluctance of not wanting to train the girl and put his experiences behind him; Kamino had caused him to groan.
"Enough." He called, Jiro cut the attack and he allowed it to hit him; everyone heard the definitive sound of bones cracking. There was a pained silence.
"Earphone Jack, fuck. That hurt. Come with me if you want me to make a hero out of you."
Jiro gulped "I'll…"
"No. There is more to being a hero than your costume; let this be a lesson for all of you, keep multiple variations of your suits at places significant to you."
Jiro nodded "I'm ready."
Frequency snorted "That's what every wannabe hero says." Jiro stopped her train of thought.
"I want to be ready. I want to be a hero that proves that you can be a hero regardless of your background; I'm from a family of well known…"
"Musicians. Gotta say, Jiro…I'm a fan of your parents work." They were heading across campus to one of the training grounds.
"I don't have an agency…per se. I personally don't want or need people sniffing around where I live, the HSPC Inspectors made sure of that. Thankfully they've not tried to break in, now enough about me and my misanthropic tendencies. Your quirk, includes increased hearing and through your Earphone Jack-quirk allows you to weaponise your heartbeat."
Jiro nodded "Yeah…Not seeing how you can…"
Frequency removed his battered and dented mask "You're a musician…as am I…there are other ways to alter your sound." Revealing the gaunt features of the Hero's face, Jiro found herself lost in the hard green eyes.
"Frequency, pitch, tone, rhythm." The answer came subconsciously. Why did his
"Very…very…good, you're a sharp cookie Kyoka. I can call you that can't I?"
Jiro nodded slowly "You're not native Japanese are you."
"Correct. Multi-lingual: English, Welsh, Manx, Japanese and Latin…that's fluency. Conversational and near fluidity French, Spanish, German…Yes, if you get skilled with your quirk you'll find certain skills come easier." Frequency grinned, he wasn't exactly wrong but he wasn't going to tell her that.
"Like a better ear for music?" Jiro asked, her parents had told her she was really good on the guitar. That was bringing up emotions, fears and memories she didn't want to deal with.
"Could be." Jiro looked up at Frequency, they'd made it to the training ground "For you, most likely. Are you ready, Kyoka?"
"Should be…"
Frequency grinned slightly. "You don't have to hide. I understand why you're leaving. Harry, promise me, promise you'll live." Harry, not Frequency, paused the last request. The last request from a brunette with bright brown eyes, separated by their choices, the hardest thing Harry had ever done. "For her, anything."
"I'm Harry, Harry Potter or Frequency. If we're going to do this, I want something in return."
Jiro nodded "Alright." Already scanning Harry; trying to see any deceit in his voice or body language.
"You're on a path, heading towards a cliff. Go left, you'll be fine. Go right, you'll be fine. Alright, leads you off the cliff. What, I'll be teaching you will be useful…lethal in some aspects, debilitating in others but all of it will keep you alive in the oncoming shitstorm. I will teach you all that I know, I will be brutal and uncompromising. You're going to hate my guts but on the condition you are willing to learn, unquestioningly you're going to survive and be an incredible hero."
Jiro stopped, this was big. She knew the quote "Yes, Mr. Potter. I'll do it, I asked my Teacher for getting you to help me."
"Kyoka-san, we'll begin. With the first exercise."
"No, wax on, wax off?"
Harry let loose a set of vibrational pulses that sounded like a sitcom audience "That comes after breathing. In and out, in through nose and out through the mouth. It's a meditative exercise, to truly use your quirk you need to remain balanced physically and emotionally. Rage will be immediate effective but dries you out, true effectiveness is serenity."
Jiro nodded. She wasn't sure what she'd find, but as she finally relaxed to the breathing exercises; she felt almost weightless. She opened her eyes to find Harry had caught her "You fell asleep. Tends to happen."
"I…felt ripples, from the beating of my heart."
Harry grinned "You and your quirk provide more than you think. Feel the frequency, Earphone Jack. Feel the frequency and you can do anything."
Jiro looked back at the wiry sound-based hero "Will you, explain how I cannot seem to find your heartbeat?"
Harry grinned "I can't masquerade as a dead-man now can I. Kyoka, you'll learn this and more. All you need to do is trust me and trust in the frequency of your heartbeat."
