"You're not my brother"
Jack had heard these words about 100 times since moving in with the Haddocks. It had been made very clear by Hiccup that he was not welcome. It all started a couple of years ago when he'd been found wandering around in winter with no memory. As chief of the Viking village, Stoick the Vast took him in as one of his own. His son Hiccup, on the other hand, felt very differently.
This most recent comment was made in response to Jack asking for help with some questions about Valentine's day, as it was still a new concept to him.
"And why should I help you?"
"Cause we're brothers, and brothers help each other out, right?"
"You're not my brother"
You'd think by now Jack would have learned not to call Hiccup his brother in front of him. But Jack couldn't help himself. He felt strangely close to Hiccup, like family. Plus Stoick had adopted him. He couldn't understand why Hiccup wouldn't even try to acknowledge this.
Jack sighed and flew off to his favorite lake. That's right, flew. Jack had learned that he had strange abilities like flying and making it snow when he was upset. This made some of the more superstitious Vikings in the village leave him alone. He guessed that this was part of the reason Hiccup didn't like him. The other Vikings had to ride on the back of dragons like Hiccup rode Toothless. Most dragons avoided Jack as well, so Jack couldn't even try to fly like the others, plus it felt so free to fly without one.
"Hey Manny." Jack said to the darkening sky, the moon barely visible. Jack always felt so comfortable talking to it, sharing his problems, or even talking about his day. He didn't dare tell the others as it would make them avoid him more. He would always address it as Manny, like there was a man in the moon.
"So, I tried talking to Hiccup again today. He still rejects me. No idea why." Jack sighed and sat down on his favorite rock. "I feel so close to him, and I think I know why. I think I like him. More than a Friend. And not like a brother. But something more. It's obvious he doesn't feel the same... He barely talks to me. I wanted to do something for him for Valentine's Day, but I don't know much about the holiday. I don't know what to get him or if it'd be okay to give him something..." Jack poured his heart out to his moon-friend.
"I don't know Manny, maybe I'm just overthinking this. I could just get him something and if it's weird I can just say I don't understand the holiday or something" Jack spent a little more time talking to the moon before flying back to the hut where the Haddocks lived. Unaware that someone had been watching him for a while. The Figure hopped onto a dragon and followed him back to the village.
The Next Day - Valentine's day.
Jack woke up early and went in search of something for Hiccup. The night before, on his way home, he saw a field with some flowers he thought Hiccup would like. So he flew over and picked some up. He took some time to find the best looking ones before flying back to the village.
Hiccup had a few admirers, since he was the first dragon tamer, and as such was surrounded by people. So Jack decided to wait until Hiccup was alone so as not to embarrass him.
"Hey, Hiccup." Jack said walking over. He stuck his arm out and pointed the bouquet at the other boy. "Happy Valentine's Day"
The brunette looked taken aback at first. He slowly reached out and grabbed the flowers. He looked down at them and blushed slightly. "Thanks, Jack..."
Jack smiled his whitest brightest smile. Seeing Hiccup so touched by the flowers made him so happy. But it didn't last, as Hiccup soon shook his head and regained his composure.
"But you know that Valentine's day is when you give a gift to people you love, Right?" Hiccup raised an eyebrow at Jack.
"I Know" The snowy-haired one replied.
"Like, Romantically." The brunette insisted.
"Yes...I like you, Hiccup. Not like a brother, but something more precious than that. I know you don't like me, but I wanted you to know...and if you hate me, I'll...I'll understand." Jack hung his head. He had finally said the words he'd been wanting to say. He held his breath, waiting for Hiccup to yell or scold or make a comment. But it never came, so he took a chance and looked up.
"I've said it a hundred times," Hiccup said with a slight smile. "You're not my Brother. But what I never said was...You're more than that. I like you too, Jack." With that, he quickly kissed the other on the cheek.
Jack touched his cheek, surprised. "I thought you hated me. You never stayed to chat or help me with anything."
"I always got flustered around you, and I thought you'd never feel the same so I tried to limit my time with you, hoping it would hurt less." Hiccup responded.
"And Did it? Hurt less?"Jack slowly closed the distance until they were a mere breath-width apart. His heart pounding in his chest.
"I-i don't know. I find it hard to think when you're around." Hiccup tried to take a step back, but Jack grabbed him.
"I guess it's like you always say, You're not my brother."
"Right... You're not my brother."
Jack mustered the last drops of courage, and kissed Hiccup.
