Episode 1 – Part 3

The following day, the group quickly broke camp, extinguishing the remains of the fire as they gathered what little they had, including their weapons. Looking around Ansel couldn't help but feel worried that something didn't feel quite right.

"Ansel, are you okay?"

He turned to see Livia looking at him, worried.

Clearing his throat Ansel managed a small smile. "I just, I don't know Livia, something just felt off to me, I can't explain it."

Livia looked around nervously. "Hmm, well, we better be careful, maybe we should tell the others?"

"Tell them what, that I've got a weird feeling something's gonna go wrong? How would that go down?" Ansel countered.

"You-you're right." Livia agreed sadly. "Maybe...maybe we should say something to Ana though, at least, I mean...she'd believe you, right?"

Ansel ran a hand through his hair, considering. "Okay, let's let Ana know."

So they approached Ana who carefully checked the machete she had been using for some time now.

"Ana." Livia whispered, getting her attention.

She turned to see them and noted their expressions. "What's wrong?"

"I've just had a weird feeling, like something's going to happen. We better try to stick together as much as possible." Ansel explained and when Ana looked startled he quickly added. "There's no point in telling the others, you know they'll just dismiss it since I'm the one with the feeling, all due to me being the youngest of us."

Ana sighed, knowing full well Ansel was right.

She couldn't stand it, it was terribly unfair but the other three all trusted each other, knowing each other for some time. They seemed to think that due to their age they were more experienced and considered each other's opinions more accurate, then hers then Livia's then Ansel's.

'Just because he's so young...but what he told us about his family...I'll bet that's just the tip of the iceberg...he's seen more than any of us I'm sure.' Ana thought sadly to herself.

"Hey, c'mon guys, we've gotta move." Their leader called out. "We need to at least make it to the main road and find out the way to Pogoren today."

Quickly recovering and nodding to Ansel and Livia, Ana hurried to catch up and they began to make their way through the woods, following the leader while keeping their eyes open and alert for Walkers.

"Of course, once we know the way, we've still got to get to Pogoren." One of the others said. "Even then we have to be careful as we don't know if the people who have turned it into their shelter are friendly."

The other nodded, sighing. "True, but really what choice do we have...at this rate, we're gonna run out of food and it's not like there's anywhere else that would be remotely safe for us outside."

Although none of them said anything, Ana, Livia and Ansel all shared looks at that, those were indeed issues that they themselves had worried about, but naturally they weren't 'senior' enough for such concerns to be considered when they brought it up.

The walk through the woods luckily turned out to be uneventful, there were a couple of Walkers shambling around but none in their path and none that noticed them. Slipping by the group soon made it out of the woods and found themselves by the side of a road which lead to a four way crossroads with signposts.

"Think they're still readable?" Livia asked.

The leader shrugged. "One way to find out, let's go see."

So they approached carefully and found to their relief that the signs were indeed still readable and even better, they had found the way to Pogoren.

"There we go, straight that way...ten miles...we're almost there." The leader remarked with a smile.

Looking around another member spoke. "Well, we might still want to think about supplies, there's a few houses near here, shouldn't we check them, just in case."

At once Ansel spoke up. "Whoa, hold on, that might not...we might not have time to-"

"Relax, if we split into two groups we can check both sets of houses quickly." The leader said.

That just made Ansel even more nervous. "Splitting up, after all this, after all we've done, is that wise, I-"

The leader shook his head. "I think I know the risks better than you, Ansel, now let's just get to work."

"We're going with Ansel then." Livia said. "Ana and I."

The men just nodded and began heading for the small group of houses nearby.

Their search hadn't turned up much, none of the food they found was viable, but they did find extra ammunition for the guns they carried, but would only use in desperation. Making their way back, Ansel shook his head.

"I shouldn't be surprised, what were they expecting, that there'd still be food lying around after all this time, that was still edible."

"You'd be surprised how long some canned goods last." Ana admitted. "But yes, you're right, we-"

She was cut off however by the loud screams. They looked up in dread to see their worst fears had been realized. Walkers were attacking their colleges, dismayed and fearful, Livia drew her gun but Ansel stopped her.

"No, others will hear, then we'll be surrounded." He warned her, his voice strained.

"But they-" Livia gasped.

Ana shook her head. "No. Ansel, Ansel is right, there's nothing we can do now, they're already bitten...our only choice is to hurry, to try and get to Pogoren before they come after us, and pray we don't run into any others."

Grimacing Livia put her gun away and together they advanced, following the sign, trying to tune out the sounds of their former comrades screams, without much success.

Meanwhile, within Pogoren, as the members of the community went about their business during another day, Mara smiled to herself as she enjoyed a walk. But as she was walking she noticed something which made her stop, worried. For up ahead she spotted Iskra, the thirteen year old girl suddenly stopping and clutching at her stomach with a pained expression on her face.
