Episode 1 – Part 4

Mara wasted no time, hurrying over to Iskra.

"Iskra, are you okay?" She asked worriedly.

Looking up Iskra managed a smile, although she still looked like she was in pain.

"Mara, I...yeah, I'm okay." She replied.

Mara looked at the thirteen year old carefully. "Are you sure, you don't looks so good, sweetie."

Iskra bit her lip, looking around and Mara began to get the feeling that she was embarrassed.

"It's okay, you can tell me anything." Mara reassured her. "I understand that there may be things you don't want people to overhear, well it's just us here. I also know that, as close as you guys are, there are some things that are too awkward to ask your dad about. You can ask me in that case."

Iskra nodded at that, cheeks flushing and Mara realized she had hit close to the mark.

Finally with a sigh Iskra spoke quietly to her. "I um, I started bleeding."

"Oh...Oh." Mara realized and nodded. "I see, c'mon, I can get you something for that."

"I just, it's really okay, I mean…"

Mara nodded. "Of course, you're growing up, that's all it is, your body is changing. This is one of them, it's natural for all women."

"Oh, so...Kalina and Lydia?"

"Yes, they'll go through this too." Mara answered. "Um, I know it's awkward and all but, did you dad say...anything, about your body changing as you got older?"

Iskra nodded and explained. "Only, that it would happen and there might be things that I'd feel awkward about, but that there was nothing really to worry about."

Mara let out a soft sigh at that, relieved.

A little later, having finished helping Iskra, Mara happened to come across another of the kids, Sergei. She noted he was in fact approaching her and smiled.

"Hello Sergei, how are you?"

He smiled back. "Hi Mara, I'm okay. Um...were you, talking to Iskra there?"

"Yes, it's um...girl talk." Mara explained. "Why, do you want to talk to her?"

"I um, well…" He stammered, suddenly looking awkward.

Mara quirked an eyebrow at that, noting his suddenly change in attitude and began to wonder. He seemed rather flustered she noticed and then remembers he was thirteen, just about the right age.

'And he did start acting this way when I mentioned Iskra, I wonder, could it be…?' Mara thought to herself before deciding to see if her hunch was correct. "Sergei, is there...something wrong?"

"N-no, nothing." He replied quickly, before sighing. "I just…It's about Iskra um, I…"

Mara nodded encouragingly. "Yes, what about her?"

"I um, I really like her, I-" He admitted at last, blushing.

Mara smiled. "Well, I think that would be sweet, the two of you get along so well together and you'd be great, maybe you should ask her about how she feels?"

"I, um, I would." Sergei stammered. "But if, if Christo found out-"

Mara knew what he meant. "He can be a little overprotective, but it's just because he really cares about Iskra. If it comes down to it, just be honest and tell him how you feel; I'm sure he'll appreciate your honesty."

Sergei smiled at that, hopeful and Mara was glad to have helped another of the children. Like Cveta she had got to know all the children within the community, being one of the teachers. She always tried to treat them all fairly, but there was no denying, the original six children from their group always held special places in her heart.

Still pressing on as the light was beginning to fade, the sun starting to set, Ansel bit his lip.

"I don't know guys, are we even…" He began to say, worried.

He looked back as he said this, worried mainly for Livia who had kept up without complaint, but surely it had to be taking it's toll on her, with her pregnancy and all.

But Livia shook her head. "I'm okay, really, we have to keep going. If we stop the Walkers might catch us and-"

Ansel grimaced. "Livia, you're not in any shape to-"

"Wait a minute guys." Ana said suddenly. "Look."

They turned and their eyes widened, while relief flooded them, for there, not too far away, were the walls and behind them they could see the buildings, it was Pogoren.

"We've found it." Livia gasped in relief.

Ansel nodded, hope restored and so they moved towards the walls. It was very nearly a complete sunset by the time they reached them but they stopped, wary as they heard the voice calling out from the top of the wall, the sound of a gun cocking.

"Hold it there, identify yourselves."

Ansel spoke up quickly. "Please, we need help, we've come seeking shelter."

There was some whispering from the top of the wall and then finally the voice spoke again.

"You'll be permitted to enter the gate, but you will be watched and you're not to go any further yet...not until you've met with Niko."

"Alright, we...we agree to your terms." Ansel said after sharing a look with the others. 'Niko, he must be the leader.'

The gates opened and Ansel made his way through, Ana and Livia following right behind him. Once inside the gates closed and they found themselves waiting, as a group of people approached, one of whom stood out, the leader himself, Niko, who stepped up towards them.
