Episode 2 – Part 1

Ansel remains tense, worried. After all these people had every right to be suspicious of them, they had to be careful. But they also had to make sure they could trust these people too. He looked carefully around at those who had come to see them, if even half the rumours were true, these were the founders of this community. He also spotted a few kids present, between the ages of thirteen and eleven; there was also a two year old boy, holding onto the side of an eighteen year old blonde girl. She was standing right by the side of the young red-headed man who Ansel noted as most likely being the leader, Niko. Sure enough it was that man who stepped forwards.

"So, looks like you've had a rough time out there." He said, not unsympathetically.

Ansel bit his lip and nodded. "Y-yeah...who hasn't?"

"True. We may have been behind these walls for two years, but we still remember what it was like out there." The man replied. "So, as you've probably guessed, I'm Niko. I'll need to know your names and you'll need to answer three questions."

Ansel shared a cautious look with the other two before turning back to Niko and nodded.

"A-alright. The questions then, we'll give our names when we answer." He agreed.

Niko nodded and then asked. "How many walkers have you have you killed? How many people have you killed? Why?"

So it was Ansel prepared to answer first.

So he straightened up and replied, trying to keep his voice steady.

"Okay, I'm Ansel. I've killed about...forty Walkers so far, I prefer to avoid them if I can. Humans...I've killed one. In self-defence as he was trying to kill me…"

Niko shook his head. "That's good enough, you don't have to explain why if it's hard for you...I can see you're telling the truth."

Ansel nodded, relieved as that death still haunted him, the death which had led to his exile from his family and their group, had exposed his greatest secret to his fanatical parents, and led to the scars on his back, with much deeper mental scars still within him. Seeing this Livia gently touched his shoulder, before stepping forwards.

"I'm Livia." She explained. "I've killed about...between twenty and thirty walkers. I've not killed any humans, I just...I don't think I have it in me to do so."

She bit her lip at that, worried but Niko nodded understandingly and the other founders seemed to agree; one of them, a brown haired woman of around thirty spoke up.

"That's not necessarily a bad thing." She remarked.

It seemed they were making a good impression, they could only hope they continued to do so and that they would be allowed in, especially as they found the people definitely seemed alright.

Finally, Ana stepped forwards, as she did so, Ansel noticed two others approaching, a blonde man in his thirties, wearing glasses and a dark haired thirteen year old girl who looked oddly familiar.

"I'm Ana." She introduced herself. "I've killed forty-three Walkers so far...I check them after I kill them to make sure of, something important, that's how I keep count. I've not killed any humans...I got lucky I guess, never really been in a situation where I had to."

It was at that point that things suddenly changed, before anyone else could react, the two new arrivals suddenly took note of Ana and the man gasped.

"Ana?"

All eyes turned to him and the girl who almost screamed upon seeing Ana.

Her one word told Ansel why she looked familiar. "Mom!"

It was the family resemblance as Ana's eyes filled with tears.

"Christo, Iskra…"

She rushed forwards, the three of them embracing tearfully, Ana finally being reunited with her husband and daughter after two years of fearing them dead.

"Oh my God, I can't believe it, you're alive." Ana choked out.

"Mom, mom…" Iskra sobbed, unable to get any other words out.

"Oh Ana, we thought; we, we…" Christo whispered. "We're just so glad you're okay, I can't believe we've found each other after all this time."

Ana pulled back, smiling. "I know it's...oh Iskra, look at you, you've grown so much in just two years."

The others watched the happy reunion, a feeling of joy and relief filling them at the sweet sight.

The happy family reunion had a beneficial side effect as it eased the tensions and helped relax both groups.

"Well, I can't imagine better people to vouch for Ana than you and Iskra, Christo." Niko remarked. "Livia, how far along are you?"

Livia replied at once. "Eight months."

Niko nodded. "I see, I can also see you're not a threat. You and Ana are more than welcome to join us in our community…"

He turned to Ansel, looked at the others who all nodded, having been whispering to each other and so he nodded to Ansel.

"Ansel...I know it's frustrating, but with no one to vouch for you...we're still trying to decide if we should let you in, but it seems to us that you're a decent person."

Ansel swallowed and nodded. "Okay...so, um…?"

Niko explained. "You're welcome to join us as part of the community, but for now we must keep you under watch, until we can be absolutely certain of your trustworthiness."

Ansel nodded, understanding. "I get it, okay, I'm fine with that."

"Alright." Niko agreed. "Grozdan, you're in charge of keeping an eye on Ansel."

Ansel soon spotted Grozdan as he stepped forwards, a boy around two years younger than Ansel himself, olive skinned with dark hair and eyes and, Ansel noted, a prosthetic left hand. With things successfully arranged they began making their way deeper into Pogoren, returning to their lives.
