Episode 2 – Part 2

Some time had passed now on that bright summer day in the community since the arrival of Ansel, Livia and Ana and things were going well. At that moment the most prominent sight was Misha hurrying home, all smiles, to where Mara is waiting; making their dinner for the evening. Seeing her son's rush and noting his smile Mara couldn't help but smile too.

She turned to him as she did so. "Hey you, what's got you so in a hurry?"

"Mom, I... I need to talk to you…" Misha said, hesitating slightly.

Mara noted his hesitance, but also that his smile never wavered, so it was clearly nothing bad, he was just not sure where to begin.

"Of course, what's up?" She asked, still smiling, her curiously audible.

Yet nothing could have prepared her for Misha's next words.

"I um...there's a girl..."

Mara's eyes widened, slightly shocked, not expecting that answer.

"Oh, a girl…" She stammered. "What about her?"

Misha instantly started blushing, his smile widening. "I... I think I like her."

That instantly caught Mara's attention, her son had a crush on a girl, and was clearly happy about it. She broke into her own grin seeing him so happy, but couldn't help remaining protective.

"Ohhhhh, who is it?" She asked, trying to keep the wariness out of her voice.

"It's...It's Lydia." Misha then revealed.

Mara was surprised all over again.

A delightful surprise this time, relieved to hear it was a girl she knew and that Misha got along great with.

"Oh Misha, that's wonderful! I always thought you two got along so well." She told him, before asking. "What brought this on all of a sudden?"

Misha shrugged, biting his lip. "I...I just, I don't know, but, she's pretty and...I...She liked the flower I gave her, it made her happy."

Mara recalled seeing that, as well as just before it, Lydia playfully sneaking up on Misha, using what Arica taught her about moving without making a sound.

"So that's what that was about...that was so cute. You've always been such a sweet boy. And judging by the way Lydia likes to make you jump and blush, I'm sure she thinks so too…" Mara told him, nodding at the memory.

Misha reacted at once. "You, you think she likes me."

He looked so hopeful Mara couldn't help herself.

"I know so. Besides, who could resist this cute face?" She said playfully pinching his cheeks.

"Mom." Misha complained with an even deeper blush, but still laughed.

Mara was laughing too. "Sorry, I had to. Now go wash up, it's almost time for dinner."

Misha nodded and went to do so, just as Ivano also arrived home for dinner.

The following day, Ansel exited the house he had been given to settle into and was almost immediately met by Grozdan.

"Hey, so um, thought I'd show you around today." Grozdan said by way of greeting.

Ansel smiled. "That sounds great, lead the way."

So together they began their walk, Grozdan pointing out places of interest, introducing him to various members of the community. Ansel couldn't help but notice that the best houses and such, near the centre of the community, actually remained empty. Not even the founders of the Pogoren Safe Zone had taken them for themselves.

When asked about this Grozdan simply smiled. "We're not any more important than anyone else, we were just lucky to get here first. We just took the first houses we could, that's why we're nearest the walls."

Ansel couldn't help but smile at the practicality of that; certainly different from his father's attitude.

Stopping for a moment, Ansel noted. "I'm just glad things are looked up now, for Ana and Livia."

"Yeah." Grozdan agreed. "You guys have come through a lot together, huh?"

Ansel nodded and began to explain, as he did so he took note of Ana, still so joyful at being reunited with her husband and daughter, the ones she thought lost. That was the reason she kept count of her Walker kills, the reason why she checked them every time she killed them, to make sure none of them were Christo or Iskra.

Meanwhile, next door he spotted a few of the other women in the community, two in particular stood out and Grozdan introduced them.

"That's Mara, she's Misha's mom, you saw him before…"

Ansel nodded. "I remember, the boy with the hunting hat, nice kid, very polite."

Grozdan agreed. "He is. The other is Katia, she...she adopted me and my sister when this all started, when our parents, died."

"Oh, I'm, I'm sorry to hear that dude." Ansel said quietly, biting his lip.

Grozdan shook his head. "It's okay, we have Katia now, and Marko."

As he finished talking they watched and Ansel noted, to his relief, that the other women were helping Livia out, helping her settle in, getting her comfortable. For the first time he felt hope that things would truly be okay for Livia and her unborn baby. As the tour continued, Ansel couldn't help but notice just how close he and Grozdan seemed to have become already, they talked easily and it almost felt natural. But that wasn't all, he began to notice something else.

'Weird, I feel so, warm...every time I look at him, I get a tingling in my stomach when he smiles and, and…' Ansel wondered to himself before stopping. 'Holy shit am I...I am, I've crushing on this guy.'

He bit his lip, suddenly feeling very awkward indeed.

Meanwhile, with Livia settled, Mara smiled as she worked in the garden outside her home, like the other homes it is set up so they could grow their own food, having found some survivors skilled in doing just that and teaching them had been a true godsend.

Her mind wandered to Misha and what he told her the previous evening. 'Misha and Lydia...that's so adorable. They're pretty young for boyfriends and girlfriends but it's so sweet, and perhaps she would be good to help build his confidence'

Just then she was broken out of her thoughts by a familiar young female voice.

"Excuse me, Mara?"

She turned around. "Hm? Oh, hi Lydia"

The girl stood there nodding.

"Hi, can I talk to you for a minute?"

Mara replied at once, straightening up. "Of course! What's up?"

"Well, um, it's about Misha." Lydia replied, smiling boldly.

Mara had been expecting this, yet also couldn't help but admire how different Lydia was now, thanks to Arica and Niko's influence in her life. Gone was the shy scared little girl who clung to her aunt's side when they first met, now she was more open and much bolder, more confident. Plus Mara noticed that it looked like Misha's crush may possibly be requited.

Still she pretended to not know where this may go; in the hopes of getting confirmation.

"Oh? What about him?" She asked casually.

Without hesitating, Lydia replied. "Well, I really like him and was hoping I could ask your advice."

Mara smiled at that, relieved at the confirmation of her crush on him, their crushes were mutual.

"Of course. What do you need advice with?"

Lydia thought for a moment, before asking. "Well, I'm hoping to know what he likes, and um...if he likes me too?"

Mara paused at that, thinking how she wanted to answer.

Finally she replied. "Well...I'm sure you already know he's on the sweeter side, so he likes things like gardening and animals, he likes to help me cook. Before everything happened, I know he loved Minecraft and video games, and superheroes. He also likes you..."

Lydia's smile was glowing. "Wow, that's great, thanks."

Mara gladly smiled back. "Of course. Glad I could help."

She winked and Lydia began to hurry off, her smile still lighting up her face. As Mara watched she saw Jonas come toddling down the path towards her. Lydia immediately picked up her little brother and hugged him as he let out a giggle, hugging back. She was such a good big sister to him.

'Misha will be so happy...it's nice to see some happiness and love in a time like this, as young as they are…' Mara reflected to herself.

She returned to the garden, looking forward to seeing how things would go.
