Episode 2 – Part 3
A few days had passed and things seemed to be settling into a normal routine for the people living with the Pogoren safe zone; the community was thriving and yet still standing guard, ready for any potential attack, be it Walkers, or humans who posed a threat. No longer considered a threat, Ansel was still with Grozdan however, the two had taking to spending time together, hanging out and actually getting closer.
'Whoa, I...I really need to consider this carefully. I may have a crush on Grozdan but I need to be careful. Ansel told himself. 'I mean, he might not feel the same way, besides I don't even know if he's...like me.'
As such he kept his thoughts and feelings to himself, not wanting to creep out Grozdan or make him worry. What he didn't know was, at this point, Grozdan was having his own issues; biting his lip, looking out the corner of his eye at Ansel.
'God I...what is wrong with me, I keep, wanting to hear him talk, to be near him. Just seeing him is, makes me feel like I'm going crazy. Do I...God, I am…'
He realized the truth, he was attracted to Ansel and now he was concerned about it, how Ansel would react, how could he even say anything. He was fearful that if he admitted the truth, Ansel would become disgusted with him and cut off all contact with him. But the thought of keeping it buried within himself left him feeling overwhelmed and he feared something would happen if he didn't say something soon.
Exiting her home, enjoying the peaceful sunny day, Mara smiled lightly to herself, deciding to take a walk and pass the time. It was around midday and everyone was going about their business, those on the wall keeping an eye out for any threats.
Enjoying the sun as she walked she let out a slow breath. 'It's so wonderful now, to think, it's been two years since the start of our huge struggle, we lost so much, had so many close calls. But now we're okay, we have a good place here and we're standing firm to defend it. I hope we can keep it together.'
As she walked she spotted Sergei up ahead and noted he was talking to Christo and she couldn't help but feel glad that she had spoken to Sergei. Urging him to be honest to Christo about his feelings for Iskra.
'I just hope it goes well for him, certainly seems to be okay just now. Christo seems surprised but he's not angry at least.' She mused.
She continued her walk, soon reaching the edge of a small wooded area where she paused, listening, she was sure she could hear something. She listened more closely and heard people talking, she recognized one of the voices.
'Wait, that's Misha...what is he…?'
Curious she moved closer into the woods, looking for her son.
She soon stopped at the edge of a clearing not too far inside the woods, inside was Misha, sitting on the stump of a fallen tree. Sitting next to him was Lydia.
"Wow, this is…" Lydia remarked with a grin.
Misha bit his lip, blushing. "I just...I wanted to tell you the truth, I'm glad to hear you like me too."
Lydia nodded. "Of course I like you, and you like me too."
Misha nodded with a smile, both now blushing and Mara couldn't help but smile as she realized they'd both taken her words to heart and had actually spoken about their crushes. But Lydia's next words caught Mara off guard.
"So...would you like to kiss me?" Lydia asked with a bold smile.
Misha gasped. "Wh-what?"
Mara bit her lip, wondering if she should step in, set some boundaries, but she stepped back. It was just a harmless kiss, she was sure that would be it. Sure enough Misha nodded and Lydia leaned closer and they lightly kissed, their lips meeting in a soft peck, that was it. They leaned back and both smiled widely, blushing. Mara couldn't help but find it adorable and was glad that they did nothing else but then hold hands. Reassured they were happy together, Mara left the woods and made her way on her walk again, mainly heading around to visit her friends Katia.
Reaching Katia's house Mara knocked on the door, it didn't take the other woman long to answer and smiled widely upon seeing her friend.
"Mara hey, it's good to see you."
Both women hugged and parted before entering the house, Katia closing the door behind them.
"Hi Katia, it's good to see you too." Mara replied. "How have you been?"
Katia led the way to the kitchen and worked on preparing two mugs of tea for them.
"Good, it's been...it still feels like a dream sometimes, all this." Katia remarked.
Mara nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I know what you mean. There's so much going on and so much changing, for the better at last. I think we're due this after all the danger and fear we went through, don't you think?"
"Yeah, I agree." Katia said as they sat down with their tea. "Kalina's already grown so much, the kids are so happy. Grozdan's happy too, I think we've finally, truly, come to accept each other."
Mara grinned at that. "That's wonderful. Speaking of the kids I saw Sergei talking to Christo, he has a crush on Iskra, you know."
Katia gasped and laughed. "Wow, that's wonderful, so, it's going well?"
Mara nodded. "It certainly seemed to be, oh and I saw Misha and Lydia too, they had their first kiss, it was just a small peck but it was so sweet."
Katia couldn't help but agree at that, they were still living in a dangerous world, but things like this made it all worth it and gave them something to truly defend.
Meanwhile, seated together by the wall, on the eastern side, Ansel and Grozdan continued to hang out.
"Wow, so...you got bit?" Ansel gasped.
Grozdan nodded. "Yeah, my hand, they had to cut it off...by doing so they were able to save my life. It wasn't until we got here and set this place up that I was able to get this hand made by Marin, my friend, you saw him."
Ansel grinned. "That man who works in the workshop, right?"
Grozdan confirmed it and finally; after a moment, they lapsed into silence, trying to think of what to say. Finally Grozdan broke the silence.
"I need to tell you something, but you have to promise to keep it a secret" He said.
"Of course" Ansel nodded.
Grozdan looked at him desperately. "You've got to promise"
"I promise," Ansel said, staring think this all a bit weird and scared of what was coming, but with that Grozdan started, even if he didn't know what to say
"Sooo... I want... I have to... no... I don't know how to say this. But I think... so I know…"
Ansel's eyes widened at that, he recalled seeing this exact same awkwardness in himself, at a very specific moment.
'Is…Is Grozdan trying to tell me he's gay too…But I thought, oh Gods this is…' His thoughts whirled at this.
He immediately tried to think of some way to help his crush.
Ansel finally decided to take the lead, he had always been the more upfront of the two of them after all. So he reached out and put his hand on Grozdan's bare knee, just below his shorts, trying to hint at his intentions. But Grozdan didn't seem to notice as he kept talking.
"So Ansel, I…don't like girls, in, that way. I prefer…men, I know that's a bit weird, but…"
Ansel immediately cut across him, smiling.
"It's not weird. I understand." Seeing Grozdan's expression he revealed. "I'm gay too, Grozdan."
"Really?!" Grozdan gasped startled.
Ansel nodded and decided to tell the full truth. "Yes. And I have to admit that I like you, Grozdan, as more than a friend."
"Me too..." Grozdan whispered, smiling and blushing.
With that Ansel smiled back, moving closer to Grozdan, but slowly giving him time to stop. But he didn't say anything, so Ansel kissed him, his hand reached behind Grozdan's neck, pulling him closer. Grozdan, a feeling of elation swelling up inside him, kissed back.
Meanwhile, at Katia's house, she continued her talk with Mara, the two friends enjoying their each other's company. Suddenly they heard the door open and both started, listening.
"Mom!" It was Kalina.
Katia smiled. "In the kitchen, sweetheart."
Kalina came hurrying through, stopping when she saw Mara.
"Oh hi Mara, I didn't know you were here." She said softly.
"It's okay Kalina." Mara said. "So, what's up?"
Kalina bit her lip, looking from Mara to Katia, then back again. "I was wondering...can boys kiss boys?"
That caught both women off guard.
"Why do you ask?" Katia queried.
Kalina explained. "I was out by the wall and I saw Grozdan and Ansel there, they were kissing."
Mara was surprised by this but Katia, although she seemed surprised, regained her composure quicker.
"Ah, I see. Well, yes, they can."
Mara nodded. "Yeah, it's not as common as boys and girls, but it is just as normal."
"Oh, okay." Kalina replied; smiling.
She then headed upstairs, her curiosity sated.
Mara turned to Katia who sat back down and noted Mara's expression.
Smiling she revealed. "I already knew about Grozdan's sexuality. He, he came out to me a couple of weeks ago. Wasn't expecting him to have a boyfriend so soon though."
Mara smiled back. "Well, I still think it's good that he told you, shows how much closer you guys have become, how much he trusts you."
Katia couldn't help but agree and feel hopeful about what she had heard.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
