Episode 2 – Part 4
Shortly after Mara left, Katia tidied away the mugs, smiling to herself. It had been nice to spend time with her friend, just sitting and chatting away together. She had been surprised by Kalina's revelation about Grozdan, but it still made her smile, hoping that he was indeed happy, that he had found someone at last.
'It was...pretty hard for him, coming out to me, he was still struggling so much after all he's been through.' Katia reflected. 'But Mara's right, it shows how much he trusts me now...after all this time, I've finally managed to bond with him.'
The thought made her glad, she had tried so hard to do so for Kalina's sake when things all started, but Grozdan had been resistant, but now things were so much better. It was then she heard the front door opening and looked up.
"Mom?"
She smiled. "Through here, Grozdan."
He entered the kitchen, smiling although Katia noticed with some worry that he was absently stroking his prosthetic hand.
"Are you-?"
He shook his head. "I...I still get the phantom pains from time to time, but, it's not as bad as it was, just...itches sometimes."
Katia nodded, some relief filling her. "I see...that's, that's good, at least it's not as bad as it was."
They sat down and Katia pondered for a moment. She decided she might as well explain to Grozdan now rather than later.
"So...your sister mentioned something interesting earlier."
Grozdan paused, looking slightly confused. "Yeah?"
Katia smiled. "She saw you down at the wall, with Ansel."
"Oh, ah." Grozdan stammered, going bright red. "Mom, I-"
Katia just reached out and touched his hand, the flesh and blood one. "You don't have to worry or hide anything Grozdan, like I said when you came out. You're still you and in fact, I'm happy for you, you've found someone who loves you, for you, and that's important."
Grozdan calmed down at that, relieved. "Thanks mom."
They hugged, both happy with how things had turned out.
Meanwhile, at her own home Iskra smiled to herself as she read her book. It was still a nice day but she had plans later and wanted to make sure she was well rested and so passed the time simply reading. Turning a page she stopped and tilted her head, listening, she could hear her parents voices. Wondering what they were talking about she set her book down and crept to the door, edging it open and listening.
"So…" Her mother was saying. "That boy, Sergei was it?"
Then her father replied. "Yes, he...he spoke to me earlier. Seems you saw it right away, love. He has feelings for our daughter."
"I hope you didn't scare the poor boy, I know how you get over Iskra." Ana remarked with a soft laugh. "You may still view her as your little butterfly, but she's growing up now."
"I know, I know." Christo laughed too. "Well, the boy was honest and I've known him long enough to know he's a decent young man. I think I can reign it in and give them a chance."
"I certainly hope so." Ana said softly.
'Me too, mom, me too.' Iskra thought to herself with a smile.
She couldn't help but feel relief at the knowledge that her parents seemed to at least be happy with her new relationship with Sergei.
At her own home, Lydia smiled to herself as she sat, Jonas seated on her lap, listening intently as she read to him.
"Hmmm, what's up Jonas?" She asked her little brother as he began reaching for the book. "You, you wanna hold it yourself?"
"Yeah." He nodded and she smiled, letting him do so.
She still read and he followed along slowly, turning the pages when she indicated. Watching them for a while, Arica couldn't help but smile, still remembering how scared she had been when she found out she was pregnant. But Niko had reassured her and the others rallied to help her and now, here they were, two years later. Niko stepped in then, his arm going around her waist. He then nodded to her and called out.
"Lydia, can we talk for a minute."
She nodded. "Sure dad. I'll be right, Jonas."
Jonas nodded and settled himself on the floor, returning to playing with his toys. Lydia hurried over to their parents.
"What's up?"
Arica smirked. "So...how did your plan to tell Misha about how you felt about him go?"
"Oh, it worked, he...he likes me too." Lydia revealed, grinning.
Niko laughed softly. "That's great, you guys deserve happiness after everything that's happened."
Lydia couldn't agree more.
A little later, with Jonas now taking a nap, Lydia made her way down the street towards one of the quieter areas of the safe zone, where she spotted the others already waiting for her.
"Hey, we ready?" She asked as she stepped next to Misha, slipping her hand in his.
Misha blushed but nodded. "Yeah, we're all here now."
The others nodded too, Sergei and Iskra were also hand in hand and the four of them shared secret smiles, noting the looks Ivano and Kalina kept stealthily sending each other, they privately wondered how long until they got together too. Still with those thoughts they made their way further down the street until they met up with Roman. Meanwhile, Katia and Zlata had met up with Livia outside the latter's new home.
"I hope everything's set up just right for you, Livia." Zlata was saying.
Smiling the pregnant woman nodded. "It is, thank you. Oh and thank you for helping me, really...I've not felt so, at ease about my pregnancy until now."
Katia gently squeezed Livia's shoulder. "That's understandable, but at least here you have a chance to give birth safely, to give your child a chance."
Livia smiled. "Yes, I only wish Petr could've been here to see this, to be here when our child is born."
The ladies shared a whimsical smile; enjoying the moment of peace and, in Livia's case, fond remembrance.
Some time later, Mara walked down the streets of the safe zone, worried.
"Misha, Ivano where are you!?" She called. 'That's strange, I thought they'd be home by now.'
She was worried, it had been some time since she'd seen Misha or Ivano and couldn't imagine where they could have disappeared to. Being in a quieter part of the safe zone she suddenly stopped when she heard the sound of gunfire.
'What, gunfire, but...could it be…' She found herself wondering frantically.
She hurried towards the sound; knowing that the gunfire was coming from someone within the safe zone practising, which was the main purpose for this quieter part of the city. Reaching the practice ground Mara's heart dropped at what she saw.
"Misha, Ivano!"
He turned, as did the other kids, and Roman.
"M-mom…" They both gasped.
Roman stepped forwards. "Mara, this-"
"No, I can't believe you did this." She growled. "Boys, we're going home, the rest of you too, go!"
The children looked like they might complain but thought better of it, seeing Mara's expression and quietly did so, returning the guns to Roman. Mara shuddered at the sight of her boys with guns in their hands.
"Mara-"
"Don't, don't even say a word." She snapped.
With that she took Ivano and Misha by their hands and led them away.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
