Ruben and his Mother went about their evening like any other with the tv running in the background, half listening to it while doing other things.
Partly hearing the news reporter on the tv advising "it's another rainy day today and there is a category 3 storm coming. Evacuation centres are blah blah…"
"Urgh they said that last week why can't they get their facts right" Ruben complained before even hearing the end of the report.
Ruben was not entirely interested in the news, so did not pay too much attention. Ruben was not naturally attractive and spent a lot of time on his appearance. He was tall, chubby and spent the better part of his life wearing glasses due to being short sighted. His main interest was girls and although he had never actually had a girlfriend, it did not stop him from pursuing the goal.
"The shops are probably going out of business, so they need a few rushes" Rubens Mum joked.
Ruben and his Mum laughed.
Ruben lived in the main city of Willow Wood. Although the city was once given a name, most people called it just the city and the actual name over the years was eventually forgotten.
Like most people going to school in the city, Ruben lived in an apartment. Schooling in the city was always better than anywhere else in West Wood. Most city apartments were very small but good for winter, as the heater would reach the whole house. You could say it was cosy in the winter. But living in the city was always a convenience choice, not a lifestyle choice.
It was winter for sure. It was a cold and wet day; the rain was coming down like a water fall in front of Ruben's apartment. It had been raining for days which was causing flash flooding. This was keeping many people inside their homes.
Today the school was closed due to the flooding, which even added to the city looking empty.
The rain did not stop the villains from coming out though.
The tv reporter went on "reports of the super villain Immortal has been seen with another villain stealing things from the city service station. No one was harmed".
"Wow gee that...s scary" Ruben wobbled.
"HEY!! No one is going to get hurt, it's okay " Rubens Mum yelled.
"Ha thanks Mum. Hey is school on tomorrow?" Ruben Questioned.
"Yeah and you're going, so go to bed" Ruben's Mum laughed.
The night flew by; the relaxing sound of rain and the quiet roads made it easy to drift off in a soothing sleep.
Before Ruben knew it, it was morning and the sun shattered through the sky, breaking the three day streak of rain. The sun shined off the puddles making the day that much more beautiful.
School was back on, so everyone was up early and heading to school.
"Don't forget your lunch on the first day back" Ruben's Mum said as she threw his lunch box at him.
"Ouch! What was that for?" Ruben complained.
"Oh, I made it so stop complaining, just get to school, be safe" Rubens Mum yelled.
"Wow sorry bye" Ruben yelled back.
The school was small, it had no lockers, so everyone had to carry their bags around. The school day would go for six hours and have five classes. The classrooms were small and had around 16 people per class.
When Ruben got to school, he saw two of his friends Ben and Elliott sitting by a tree inside the school grounds. It was a large tree with massive branches that touched the stars. In summer it bore beautiful pink flowers and in winter they were white flowers.
"Hey Ruben. Quick I have something to show you" Ben yelled.
Ben was short, he had brown hair in like a bob, he was skinny and always had an untucked shirt. He was an unusual guy. Ben always liked looking after animals.
Ben was kneeling next to a bunch of ducklings, there was about three of them. They had lost their Mother and looked really destressed.
"Oh what!? They're sooo cutee... give them some water they might need it!?"Ruben said.
Ben threw his arms up into the air and held them there for about five seconds before a stream of water started flowing through the sky above their heads and glistened in the sun. Ben slowly put his arms down and the water followed, flowing through the air landing right under the ducklings creating a small pool of water.
Ben stands up, looks at Ruben and questions "Is that enough?".
"Enough!? You gave them a pool!" Ruben laughs.
"Can we keep them?" Elliott questions.
Elliott was tall, he always wore sweaters and long pants. He had really orange hair like as orange as an orange. He was quite rich and although quiet and not really open with people, he liked to hang with his friends
"What?...oh you're serious...no sorry, but you can hold them while we wait for the bell" Ben said.
A bright smile began to stretch over Elliott's face as he turned toward the ducks. As he gathered them up, he looked at Ben and Ruben with a smile from ear to ear.
"Wait, let me take a picture, hold still" Ruben said pulling out his phone from his pocket.
Ruben snaps a picture of Elliott with the ducks.
"Alright I want them away from everyone, so they don't get hurt. Can you take them somewhere Elliott?" Ben said.
"But they don't have their Mum" Elliott cried as he frowned.
"Yeah I thought you'd be the one saying that, Ben" Ruben said.
"Yeah I know, but they have each other so they will be fine" Ben guessed.
"Okay I guess you're right" Elliott said as a smile wiped back over his face
They all walked down to a small creek just beyond the boarder of the school grounds. Elliott placed them in the creek. They all waved goodbye as they walked back into the school grounds, sat back under the tree and prepared for the day ahead.
