Episode 5 – Part 3

Getting into their own vehicles and preparing for what lay ahead, the Pogoren survivors began to make their way out from their safe zone, across the field surrounding the walled in city as they headed to where the cult had their hideout. They had managed to get their hands on the old military vehicles when they first got to Pogoren and cleared out the local military barracks, it also afforded them some good quality weapons too, which they had armed themselves with. Niko drove the lead the vehicle, following the map to find the right directions. Arica sat by his side in the front passenger seat, looking out the window, biting her lip.

"It was around here they intercepted me." She noted. "I can't stop thinking about it; what it's lead to, maybe I shouldn't have gone out...Emilia might still be alive."

Niko shook his head. "Or someone else would've been caught in your place and we'd have lost her rescuing them. We can't know and dwelling on it, isn't going to change it."

"I know. I just, it keeps playing in my head. Every time I think about it, I keep seeing Jonas, begging me not to go." Arica replied softly.

Niko briefly glanced at her, a soft expression, before returning his gaze to the road.

"That's another reason for us to do this. To make sure Jonas never has to live in fear of them." Niko remarked. "The safer we make things for our son, for the next generation, the better...who knows, maybe this world of madness and death won't last forever. Maybe there will be a world again, where people can sleep in their beds without fear."

Arica smiled and nodded in agreement. "I only hope that world will come in Jonas' lifetime, even if it doesn't come in ours."
Niko agreed.

As they continued to drive Mara began to talk to the others over the radio.

"Okay so, we know what we're walking into, does everyone remember the plan?" She asked.

Katia replied. "No worries, I've already spoken to the people with me, we're all prepared for it."

Several of the others confirmed; while many were wary of the risk the upcoming plan entailed, they had agreed to it when it became clear that the only other viable plan, a full frontal assault, breaking through the cult's front door so to speak, would result in even greater risk and losses. Niko then spoke on his radio.

"Alright, we know what we have to do. Once we get close enough we'll be moving on foot. Everybody will move into the agreed positions and take note of any initial concerns we may encounter. Also keep an eye out for Walkers, we don't wanna attract the wrong kind of attention with this." He said. "After you've done all that and everything's ready, let me know and we'll put things into action."

There were a few calls in the affirmative and so they continued the rest of their ride in silence. At least until they reached the agreed point where they felt they were close enough and began parking up their vehicles.

With their vehicles parked they all began to disembark and gathered themselves, readying their weapons and making their way to the edge of the trees that led to the brow of a hill. Down below they could see a moderately sized town.

"Pretty basic set up, wall isn't much for security…" Niko noted. "Given their beliefs, they might not see the Walkers as threateningly as they should."

Roman nodded slowly. "Should give us an edge though. Alright everyone, let's all get into position, we know what we've gotta do."

A few more murmurs of agreement and the attack force gathered into groups, each one led by one of the founders who had come. Heading around to Niko's left, Grozdan and Ansel shared a tender look with each other, before splitting off with their groups, Mara and Roman headed to the left as well, leading their groups. Meanwhile Katia and Marko briefly clasped each other's hands before doing the same, Bruno following shortly afterwards, albeit going to Niko's right. Sharing a soft kiss with Niko, Arica nodded and began to lead her group after them. Niko nodded to his own group and they prepared to wait for the signal, to know that it was time to move, that they'd have the cult encircled and that there would be no Walkers nearby to hear their shots.

Waiting anxiously, ready to begin the moment the signals were all given, Niko looked around at the people with him, all of them steely-eyed and ready to face down the challenge ahead. He felt the usual pang of guilt that he might be leading them to their doom, that one or more, or worse all of them, would die under his command in this upcoming attack. But they had all come willingly, in fact he had a strong feeling if he had refused to allow it, they'd have come anyway.

"Niko, we're ready. Looks just like Pavle and Britta said." Katia said through the radio. "No Walkers at this point."

"None here either." Marko confirmed. "Something doesn't seem right though...are we sure they got an accurate count on their numbers?"

Niko replied quickly. "Are close as they could make it, why?"

Roman was the one who answered. "There's too few of them down there. There's supposed to be ninety of them...I'm counting seventy."

Niko bit his lip. "We can't see any that are indoors, we'll have to take that into consideration."

The others agreed and soon word spread that they were all in position, all ready and no walkers were currently nearby. It was time. Warned in advance of the two lookouts, Niko nodded to his group to get ready and then made his way down from the hill, out of the trees and towards the gates of the cultists camp. He stopped a short distance away as the lookouts raised their weapons, bows and arrows he noted, likely no guns.

"Halt there, state your business." One lookout shouted.

Niko spoke clearly. "I am here seeking whoever is in charge...I've come to establish negotiations."

There was the sound of shouting and calls within the camp until finally, as Niko stood, tense and ready, the gates opened.
