Episode 5 – Part 4
Niko stood ready, watching with narrowed eyes as the gates opened and a figure walked out; he was a tall man, slender with shaved black hair and black eyes. He was armed only with a machete.
'For the leader of a powerful cult he doesn't look all that threatening.' Niko couldn't help but note to himself. 'But you can't take anything at face value, that's for sure.'
Finally the man stopped a few feet away from Niko. He looked Niko up and down, his eyes narrowing as he seemed to take note of Niko's weapons.
"You bring weapons to a negotiation." He snapped.
Niko quirked an eyebrow. "Personal safety, nobody still alive in this world can be ignorant of that. Besides, you're armed."
The man grimaced. "After I was told you were. What do you want?"
Niko pretended to smile. "Straight down to business, I like that. Alright then."
He straightened up, noting through the gates that a large number of the cult members, almost all of them he hoped, if not all, were watching. The focus was on him, allowing the other groups, albeit not his own, to move out from the trees and quietly begin to approach the camp from the sides and rear. Soon everything would be ready, a short swift attack with just the right use of their weapons would breech the defences and give them an advantage as they enclosed their enemies and finished them off.
But he still needed to buy more time.
So he began to speak. "A small group of your people, three or four of them, attacked one of my people...my wife in fact, when she was getting supplies for our safe zone."
"I know nothing of this, you cannot honestly believe one of us would-" He sneered.
"It happened a few days ago, they chased her with a van, that van." Niko remarked, pointing to it as he saw it inside the camp. "Took her a warehouse and held her prisoner, intending to feed her to a Walker. We rescued her, but it cost us the life of one of our group."
The man glowered. "None of us would have killed-"
"She was bitten, she took her own life to prevent herself from turning."
"Blasphemy!" The man cried. "She denied herself the ultimate gift of-"
"Not all of us share your crazy views." Niko snapped. "Now, as we said, I'm here to negotiate. Regarding that incident."
"Oh, so you insult us and then expect us to just, what, hand over our people so you can murder them and pretend it's some form of justice?" The man fired back. "An unbeliever's death is meaningless."
Niko snarled but kept his temper in check. "She meant a lot to us, she died because of the recklessness of your people. What I want, is goddamn answers. None of this would've happened if your people weren't needlessly chasing my wife for no reason."
The man snorted but there was a flicker of fear in his eyes, he realized Niko wasn't a man he could cow with his zealotry.
He gathered himself however and spoke.
"She obviously was an intruder, setting foot on OUR territory." He spat venomously. "You expect us to let that go unpunished?"
Niko shook his head. "It would've helped if it was clear you actually had a territory and an actual claim to it. No signs, no warnings, no communication with any other group to let them know...Can't blame other people then if they wander into what you claim is your territory, since you haven't shown any signs of claiming it."
The man looked outraged. "Just typical of you unbelievers, never taking responsibility for your own actions, think you can blame other people, just because you-"
But whatever he would've said remained unknown, for it was clear negotiations had broken down and the only sound that could then be heard, echoing around, was a single gunshot.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
