Episode 6 – Part 1
The gunshot startled the cultists, cries of shock and anger ran out. Niko stepped back quickly, getting out of range as he lowered his still smoking gun, the man he had been speaking too dropping dead from the shot. That was the signal that they needed, more gunshots rang out as Niko's group emerged from the trees. Other shots also rang out from all sides and with a few yells Niko knew the grenades had been deployed. With the two lookouts dead it was just the cultists inside now, all of them grabbing their weapons before crying out as the explosions rocked their camp, destroying the walls and opening the way for Niko and all his allies. They had them encircled, they charged in, firing with their guns, making sure to make as many clean shots to the head as possible.
"This is it, for Emilia, for the future of our children, we can't let them escape!" Niko yelled over the cries, the shouting.
There were more cries from his own as the cultists began to scream, some falling, others trying to defend themselves.
'A massacre, it's going to be a massacre.' Niko reflected sadly. 'But it has to be done, to stop them causing more harm in the future.'
He opened fire twice, taking down two of the men who had been at the warehouse, two of the men who had nearly killed Arica. She had already killed the woman, switching to her knife to do so and ducking under the woman's guard to drive the blade up under her chin. With the woman dead Arica turned and fired against two more, soon she and Niko were right next to each other.
She grimaced as she looked around, noting how they were closing in, tightening the circle, making sure to keep an eye on the houses for any inside.
"We've had a good start." She remarked to him. "We outnumber them, have them surrounded and had the element of surprise."
Niko nodded. "Yeah. But that only lasts so long, see, they're starting to fight back, this is where things get ugly."
"Uses the houses for cover, make sure any coming out are taken down." Roman instructed. "They're outnumbered and cornered, they'll be desperate, don't take chances."
No sooner had he finished saying that than arrows began to fly and the doors of a few houses burst open. More cultists emerged, armed and ready to fight. The Pogoren survivors fought back, letting their guns do the talking, but it was clear from the screams that some of their own had already fallen, taking arrows or sneak attacks.
"Don't give up, take them down, we're nearly there, that's all the missing twenty!" Roman roared.
Niko took his cue from that. "Let them have it, no prisoners, no mercy!"
With more shouts they continued to fight, even employing a few more grenades to flush out any hiding cultists and finally the noise faded away, their superior firepower had won out, all ninety cultists lay dead.
Looking over the devastated field of battle, Niko bit his lip, trying to contain the overwhelming turbulent emotions inside him.
'We slaughtered them, they were people and we slaughtered them.' He reflected in horror. 'It doesn't matter how we try to justify it, it's what we did, ninety people killed by our hands, simply because they posed a threat to us...we tried to defuse it, but they wouldn't...No, no justifications, just accept it.'
He knew that was all they could do. It was done, they had to accept that and continue onwards, for the sake of their families. But what of the families broken here today, the dead on their own side. Ten people, each with wives, husbands, sons, daughters, boyfriends, girlfriends. Grozdan and Ansel approached, hand in hand.
"We've finished up with our people, Niko." Ansel said. "None of them will turn now."
Grozdan nodded. "We're ready to transport them back to Pogoren for burial."
Niko nodded and announced. "Alright, let's get back to our vehicles, take our people back home so they can be laid to rest...leave things as they are here. The Walkers will find it soon enough, do what they do best."
With the others agreeing, they began to make their way back to their vehicles, all of them solemn as finally the fires of revenge passed and they were left to cope with what they had done.
Standing on a grassy knoll, out of sight of the departing group, stood two figures who had watched the battle.
"Can you believe it?" The man asked. "They actually did it."
The woman nodded. "I saw it too...we'll need to make contact with them, talk to them."
The man agreed; they'd have to think about how they were going to do this; what they had just witnessed was something they had never imagined possible after all.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
