Episode 6 – Part 2
The ride home was mostly silent; save for the tears of those who had lost loved ones. Glancing back over his shoulder at the people who rode in the back of the military van he was driving back to Pogoren, Niko took note of one woman, who had lost her husband, she sat, tears in her eyes. But when their eyes locked she shook her head. It was clear, she didn't want to hear anything. She didn't need to, she and her husband had joint this campaign fully knowing the risks. It wasn't something she held against Niko and since the cultists were dead, he had already been avenged. There was one little thing of note that Niko had seen, he had discussed it with Arica and she confirmed she had seen it too; they'd need to discuss it when they got back. That wouldn't be very long, he noted, as the walls of Pogoren came into view. Before long they had entered the safe zone and parked up the vehicles, people waiting to take the weapons and store them, as they all disembarked. They were home at last. There was just one last detail to see to before they held the funerals for the deceased.
"You made it back." Marin remarked as he stepped forwards with the others. "How...how did it-?"
"We slaughtered them, ever last one." Niko remarked hollowly. "We've lost ten…"
Britta bowed her head. "We'll...we'll make the arrangements right away."
Niko then spoke up, getting their attention. "Before everybody departs. While I'm sure we've wiped out the cult, we better consider the possibility, of stragglers, the odd member of two who might not have been at the camp. I saw something on the cultists that I'm sure is a sign we can use to identify them, a tattoo…"
He went on to describe the tattoo and warned his people to be careful and keep a look out in case they met anyone with said tattoo. With that handled, they turned their attention to the funerals.
It was some days later and things were slowly easing back to normal. At that moment Mara was smiling, mostly recovered from the incident, spending time with her boys. They currently sat at the table, eating lunch. She had noticed her boys becoming more and more excited as she and Roman had become closer. She almost wanted to laugh at how much they regarded him and had to admit, her own hopes were high. She paused for a moment, noting the furtive glances between the boys, as if they had been discussing something secretly before lunch.
"So, what are you boys gonna be up to today?" She asked casually, hoping she'd find out the reason for those glances.
She wasn't disappointed, both boys broke into identical grins and, with an encouraging nod from Misha, Ivano spoke first.
"I was gonna invite Kalina around, we were gonna hang out together in the tree house." He said.
Misha nodded. "Yeah and Lydia were thinking of going on a picnic in the woods together."
Mara grinned at that. "That sounds great boys, you have fun."
They both nodded cheerfully and finished their lunch before heading out.
'Ah young love.' Mara thought with a cheerful sigh.
She wasn't just happy to see her boys falling in love, despite their young age. But also couldn't help but note the balancing effect they had on each other's personalities. The rambunctious Ivano drawing out Misha's playful side while Misha's gentler level-headedness made Ivano less rash. She was truly glad to have taken the boys in and hoped, if things continued to work out the way they were with Roman, that they'd finally be a real, full, family.
Smiling lightly as she lifted Jonas' sleeping form up, Lydia made her way through to the living room of her house, finding their parents seated together. They were talking quietly, clearly still trying to come to terms with what had happened regarding the cult, that said they looked more at ease than they had before.
'Maybe it's finally working.' She mused. "Hi mom, dad."
They both looked up, smiling.
"Ah Lydia, hello." Arica greeted her.
Still smiling Lydia moved closer. "Jonas is sleeping."
Arica gently took him from her. "I'll take him to get ready for bed. Are you-?"
She bit her lip. "Um, actually, I kinda had plans. I was gonna go on a picnic with Misha."
"That sounds like a good idea. "Niko said. "You kids have fun."
Grinning and thanking them, Lydia went to get herself ready to head out. Meanwhile, in her own house, Kalina was smiling, getting herself ready to go over and see Ivano. As she made her way downstairs she stopped when she heard her name called.
"Mom?" She queried, turning.
Katia was there, looking at her curiously. She wasn't alone either, Marko, Grozdan and Ansel were all there.
"Where are you going, honey?" Katia asked. "We were gonna have lunch with Ansel."
Kalina bit her lip. "Oh um, well, I kinda, already ate. Ivano also invited me over to his and Misha's house, we were gonna spend time together in the tree house and-"
"It's fine." Ansel said with a warm smile. "Go and have fun Kalina, we can sit and have lunch all together another time."
She smiled at that, Grozdan also grinned, gently taking Ansel's hand under the table as Kalina headed out.
Smiling to herself Iskra finished brushing her hair and dusting off her clothes.
'Well, here I go.' She thought happily.
Exiting her room she made her way down to the living room where her parents sat together, reading books, simply enjoying a peaceful time together.
"Hi mom, dad." She said cheerfully.
They looked up smiling and Christo spoke up first.
"Iskra hello, well, you look nice dear." He said.
Iskra beamed and then Ana asked. "Are you, going out somewhere?"
"I was gonna go out with Sergei, we were gonna take a walk together around Pogoren." She explained.
"Oh that sounds lovely." Ana replied.
Christo nodded in agreement. "Yes, it does. You two have fun now, we'll see you at dinner, okay."
"Sure."
With that Iskra made her way out, looking forward to spending time with her boyfriend. Sergei meanwhile was getting ready for the exact same plan at his house. Zlata of course had noticed and smiled as she watched him.
"Tell Iskra I said hi." She remarked as she walked past.
Sergei blushed. "Urgh, mom, we're just going a walk."
Zlata nodded. "I know, still, tell her I said hi."
"Okay, okay." He laughed.
He left to meet up with Iskra. It seemed that at last they'd have a chance, it was time for things to settle down.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
