Episode 7 – Part 3

Livia bit her lip, worried, unsure what to say or do. She rested a hand on her swollen stomach as she waited patiently outside Jonas' room. She could hear the poor boy crying inside, but whenever she tried to enter to calm him, he'd freak out and throw things.

'Poor boy, something's terrifying him, but I can't get him to talk to me long enough to find out what it is.' She thought sadly.

She started a little and then sighed, touching her stomach again where she had felt her child moving.

"I know, sweetie, I know." She whispered. "I wish I could help him, I just...don't know how to…"

But she noticed something, the crying in Jonas' room had stopped. She turned towards the door, uncertain, had he heard her, did he understand. Despite his very young age she knew Jonas was bright, had been taught carefully, a necessity in the world they lived in. After a hesitant few moments the door opened and Jonas peeked his head out.

"L-Livia?" He sniffled hesitantly. "Help?"

She nodded softly. "Yes honey, I want to help. What's got you so scared?"

Sniffling again, Jonas stepped out of his room, before making his way over to her and hugging her legs. She gently smoothed his hair back, trying to soothe him, letting him gather himself.

Finally he looked up at her, lip trembling.

"Where's mommy and daddy?" He asked shakily.

Livia put on her best smile. "They're with those people who came to see us, to celebrate, I'm sure-"

But that just distressed Jonas more. "No, trouble, big trouble!"

"What do you mean Jonas, how is there trouble?" Livia asked, startled.

"That man, he bad." Jonas whispered. "He got the mark, there."

He pointed to the underside of his left arm, to indicate.

'That man, he must mean Jacob.' Livia noted. "What, what mark?"

Jonas' answer made her blood run cold. "The mark of the people who took mommy before. I saw it, got scared, it why I ran."

"My God…" Livia gasped. "He's one of them. Oh Jonas, don't worry."

Jonas bit his lip. "Trouble?"

"Yes, but we can still fix this, we can still help them, it's not too late." Livia told him.

So, taking his hand they made their way out of the house and began looking for any signs of a way to alert the rest of the community. Soon they spotted one of the lookouts and approached, seeing them he smiled pleasantly.

"Ah, hello there Livia, Jonas...ready to go join the others at the feast?"

Livia shook her head. "No, we need to alert everyone here. The feast is a trap. Jonas saw the cult tattoo on the arm of that man Jacob.

The lookout froze in shock and horror. "You, you're sure about this?"

"Yes, I saw it, it scared me, I ran." Jonas admitted sadly.

Livia knew what was upsetting him so much, he felt guilty. He had got scared, lost his head and ran, instead of warning his parents.

"It wasn't your fault, Jonas, you were just scared." She said to him reassuringly before turning to the lookout. "If Jonas says he's sure, I believe him."

The lookout nodded. "So do I...I'll send out the alert, we need to take action quickly."

Livia nodded; they had to hurry, before it was too late.

Livia had to admit, despite having been at Pogoren for a while now, she was still amazed with the efficiency with which Niko and his people had managed to turn the place not only into a safe-zone, but a strong community who looked out for each other, trusted each other and, when they were in danger, were quick to rally to each other's defence. She stood with Jonas, watching as a large number of the community began readying themselves with weapons. The warning had gone out and spread quickly, now the whole place was up in arms and rallying, trying to make sure they kept things running while those who were ready and able to armed themselves. She gently nodded to Jonas, reassuring him as soon they were ready. The Pogoren militia was prepared now to face the cult and were leaving the safe zone, they knew where to go, it was time to take the fight to the cult and this time, to finish things off once and for all.
