Episode 8 – Part 1

Slipping out of the door of the room they had been held captive in, trying hard not to look back at Bruno's corpse, or listen to the rattling and groaning of the chained walkers, Niko led the way out into what looked like a bland corridor, part of the interior of the building which seemed like some sort of warehouse.

"Everyone okay, we ready?" Niko asked.

He looked back at the others as they filed out, makeshift weapons at the ready. Marko and Pavle both nodded as Roman came up next to Niko, ready to take point as usual. Marin also nodded and looked anxiously back at Grozdan and Ansel, Grozdan still tightening the straps of his prosthetic hand, making sure it was on right, but they both nodded in reassurance.

"Okay, we've gotta find the others, make sure they're okay…" Niko replied, before sighing. "I suppose it's good in a way we didn't have our weapons when we were captured. It means at least that they won't have them."

Roman grunted. "Small comfort but yeah, fair point."

"We've gotta make sure everybody else is okay, who knows what they'll have done to them." Grozdan spoke up.

Marko nodded and gently squeezed his adoptive son's shoulder. "We will."

"I think we already have." Roman then said with a smirk.

He was right, at least somewhat, for at that moment the women of the group who had been captured rounded the corner, all armed with makeshift weapons just like them.

The effect was almost immediate, upon seeing each other they rushed to each other quickly, being the first one to reach each other, Mara and Roman immediately embraced, Katia and Arica then wasted no time embracing and kissing Marko and Niko respectively. Britta and Ana gladly reunited with their respective loves, Pavle and Christo, as well.

"I um, I hate to break this up." Cveta said sheepishly. "But we've still got to find the kids and we're still stuck in enemy territory."

Marin nodded. "True. C'mon, we've still got the element of surprise, let's find the kids and try to figure out what we're looking at here before we lose it."

The others agreed and so reigned in their emotions as they resumed their search. Once again luck was on their side, for no sooner had they rounded the corner when they heard a gasp.

"Mom."

Mara turned instantly, recognizing those voices anywhere, sure enough, there was Misha and Ivano, with the other kids, all running to their respective families.

"Thank God you guys are alright." Mara whispered in relief.

Grozdan grinned. "Kalina, I...thank God."

He hugged his sister tightly, smiling, Katia and Marko joined in, then, without hesitation, pulled Ansel close. After savouring the moment for a while, Niko and Arica straightened up, nodding at Lydia, having heard about how she had saved her friends.

"Alright, let's see if we can find out what we're dealing with here now. We'll need to be careful, we don't know how long it'll be until they discover we're free." He said.

The others nodded and so they began to sneak onwards, seeking out the rest of the cult, determined that this time, they would finish this.

Finally reaching the end of the corridor they had been on they stopped by the doorway, taking cover, looking out. Outside was the main room, several cult members, including Jacob and Natasha, whom they now realized were in fact the leaders of the cult, were there.

"Doubt that's all of them, if Jacob wasn't lying about their numbers." Niko whispered.

Pavle grimaced. "It's gonna come to a fight, there's no other way out and besides, we gotta end this."

"Which means we're facing problems, there's no cover in that room, and we can't stay here to take them down, they'll overwhelm us." Roman explained.

Niko sighed. "We've no choice, if we don't fight, we're not getting out...we'll have to take the chance...kids, try to stay back, Grozdan, Ansel, keep them safe."

Both older boys nodded and they readied themselves. Acting quickly and trying to at least maintain the advantage for as long as possible they slipped out and stealthily killed those nearest them, but their next attacks were not so quiet, although they still eliminated their enemies.

"Blasphemers, so, you dare!" Jacob yelled upon discovering them.

The cult yelled, building into a frenzy as they grabbed their weapons.

Natasha snarled. "You will all die here, you have no right to our gift now!"

The sound of doors opening on walkways above confirmed that more members of the cult were indeed present and had heard it, now things were about to become difficult.

But the group held their ground and fought, taking down any of the cultists that dared to come close. They found a way to use the close proximity to their advantage as it kept those cultists armed with bows from firing at them, for fear of hitting their own people. The cultists tried to use sheer numbers to overwhelm, but they continued to fight. Using their makeshift weapons to good effect to keep from being attacked from behind.

'We're standing our own, but...we're not defeating them, not even close.' Niko fretted.

It was true, and to make matters worse, they were flagging, growing tired. Grozdan and Ansel tried desperately to fight off any that got too close to the kids, but it was a desperate fight. Their efforts to try and fight their way out of the building and try something else were being thwarted. Finally the fighting stopped as those on the upper level came down, the surviving members of the cult, easily between sixty and seventy all stood, armed and ready for the kill. The group was backed up into a corner, all trying to shield each other. Watching with a smirk, Jacob and Natasha both felt superior.

"It ends now." She drawled.

Jacob nodded. "You have made your last mistake, now you will die and not even know the glory of becoming a walker. Kill them, and make sure there is nothing left of their heads, ALL of them."

But before the cultists could carry out his order, there was an explosion, and a volley of gunfire through the now blasted open door, the survivors hearts leapt, for they realized right away who it was. Reinforcements had come at last.
