Susan cautiously settled herself at Peter's side, smoothing down her skirt as she sank onto the bed quilt.

The morning's breakfast had been...odd. All four siblings had been present. While Edmund picked at his food again, continually stealing glances at Peter, the elder himself was eating much too quickly and was chatting and rambling about just about every matter under the sun. Edmund's nervousness Susan could understand. But Peter was acting entirely unlike himself. Seated next to him now, watching him pick at the quilt beside his leg, Susan guessed she was about to find out why.

He had rather bashfully asked her for a word when the two of them had finished eating. Susan had replied, "certainly," at once, assuming that Peter meant for them to step into the hallway momentarily. But when Peter had specified Susan's bedchamber, she, in spite of herself, felt her stomach give an anxious little leap. Oh, surely not, she had assured herself, and pushed away the thought immediately before heading upstairs.

And here they sat. Presently, Peter cleared his throat and turned to look at her.

"I must confess that I'm not entirely sure on where to begin," he spoke slowly. "Indeed, I..." he stopped. "I feel rather dreadful," he continued.

"Why's that?" Susan asked.

"Su...we'll always be friends, yeah? No matter what?"

"Erm...of course...Peter, what are you on about? What's happened?"

"Even when I do things that make you angry with me? We'll still be able to sort it, yeah?"

"Peter...whatever it is, I'm sure it's not nearly as big of a deal as you're making it out to be in your head. Let's have it," she placed a warm hand on his arm.

"But it is, Susan," he spoke quietly. "It's a very big deal. One that requires me to respond in such a way that I'ven't had need to do in a very long time. I...I feel an equal need to cement our friendship before I do so." Susan frowned.

"Before you do what, exactly?" Peter was silent for a long moment.

"Susan...I cannot in good conscience allow the fact that you so blatantly disregarded Lucy's safely to go unaddressed." Susan removed her hand from Peter's arm so quickly that one might have thought he had caught fire.

"What?" She gasped. "When?"

"With the griffins," Peter continued, already regretting this decision but knowing full well that it was too late to back out now. "You allowed her to mount one and take to the sky despite knowing full well that she, as well as you, has had zero training on such creatures."

"Peter, she was fine. It's basically no different from riding a horse, really. You have the basic and fundamental--"

"But she mightn't have been!" Peter raised his voice, causing Susan to start a bit and snap her mouth shut. "A horse, Susan? When you fall off a horse, you hit the ground directly below you and break an arm or a leg. Fall off a creature of the air? You plummet hundreds of feet and don't even know when you land because you're dead."

"We packed her cordial--"

"Her cordial can't help her when she's dead on the forest floor with her head split open!" Peter knew that he was being emphatic, but Lion's mane, she didn't know better? Susan wore an unmarkable expression on her face, but did not make a move to speak. Peter continued. "I. Must. Be able to trust at all times that you are after Edmund's and Lucy's best. It's as simple as that. And I can't punish Edmund for putting himself in harm's way and not hold you to the same standard, especially Lucy as your charge."

"I understand." Susan was nodding. "You've my sincerest apologies for my lapse in judgement. I shall make absolutely sure that I am making the wisest choices in the future regarding our siblings' safety. You have my word. Thank you for initiating this conversation, Peter." And she rose. "May I be excused?"

"May...you...no, no you may not be excused. Susan, I--" Peter ran a hand through his hair, flustered, giving her a long look. "I regret that I must make sure of it."

"...of what?" She took a step backwards.

"Of your word. I'm sorry, Susan," he took a deep breath, "but I'm going to have to...to...spank you." He swallowed hard. "I don't like it any more than you do," he held up a hand as she immediately opened her mouth to protest, "but it must be done."

"But...but, that's...humiliating!" Her eyes were widening. "I'm not a child, I...what's so pressing about this particular situation that you feel you must address it like this instead of...well, instead of...conversing like we normally do?"

"There's nothing more to talk about," Peter said quietly. "It's no different than when I have a talk with Lucy about disrespect and then give her a spanking. The conversation happens first and foremost, then the discipline cements the emphasis of the conversation. Surely I don't need to explain this to you, Susan."

"But I don't need emphasis," she argued. "I understand."

"I'm not going to argue with you." Peter fixed her with a steady look that clearly read don't press me. "I've said what's going to happen. The only choice you have right now is whether you are going fetch your hairbrush, or I must." Susan glared straight ahead, saying nothing. "Alright," he said after a moment, rising to his feet. "I'll do it. Back in a moment."

"Peter," her voice was sharp and came out shriller than she intended. He turned back to look at her. She was clenching her jaw, her cheeks flaming red. Blinking back angry tears, she began. "If you do this to me, I swear, I--"

"You'll what?" Peter looked back at her pointedly. "I know you're not happy about it, nor am I. But this is happening. I'm lenient on a fair amount of things, Susan, but safety is not one of them. And if you can't find it within yourself to think twice when it comes to such matters, well, then, I will help you do it." And at that, he turned back around and walked out the door.

And a few moments later, Susan found herself sobbing over Peter's lap as the hairbrush did its fiery work across her bottom. Peter was purposeful, not making quite such quick work of it as he had with Lucy. He wanted to make sure it would be memorable; he had no care to repeat this. Susan gritted her teeth and shrieked as the punishment continued, perhaps from anger or pain; a mix of both, Peter guessed. She did not, however, try to stop or block Peter, nor did she attempt to beg off, both of which Lucy and Edmund were wont to do. She simply lay rigid over his knees, crying miserably, picking up in sound and pitch when he moved lower. Only then did she gasp, "oh, please! Please, please!" and scrambled to grip the bedsheets before bursting into heavier tears. Peter said nothing, simply continuing.

At long last, Peter decided she had had enough. He let the hairbrush drop to the floor and grasped Susan's arm, helping her to her feet. "I'll be back in a minute," he spoke above her sobs. "Gather yourself together," he added, before hurrying out of the room.

The door shut behind him and he leaned against it heavily, finally allowing his own tears of frustration to fall as he swiped at them hastily. The whole ordeal had felt so...wrong. As wrong as it could be, in fact, and yet...what else could he have done? Nothing, he supposed.

He had often seen both his mother and his father wiping their own tears after disciplining one of his siblings. When questioned, his mother had given him the tried and true, "it hurts us just as much as it hurts you," response. Peter had rolled his eyes at the time and disregarded it as cliché, but he now concluded, as he was finding himself doing more and more all the time now, following his siblings' discipline, that it must be true. He hurried down the steps to the kitchen to fetch Susan a glass of water, almost spilling it on his tunic as he jogged back upstairs. He needed a hug just as much as he figured that she would.

To be continued!
