Author's note: Hey all! I know it's been a long time since I updated this story but things have been very busy with my summer job and life at home. This chapter was a short one but a fun one, and one I think you've all been waiting for. Rango wakes up from his transformation!
"Sn-sn-snake!"
At Bean's piercing cry, Rango's eyes flew wide open. "Snake? Where!"
His girlfriend was standing in the living room, pointing a shaking finger. Rango panicked and tried to scramble off the couch. But his legs were moving wrong. He fell and hit the ground, his jaw nocking against the hard wooden floor. The vibrations ran through his skull. Rango tried to get back up again, but his legs weren't working. But as he hit the ground he thought he caught a glimpse of a rattlesnake's green tail.
"SNAKE!" He called, and bolted to the other side of the room as fast as he could.
He still felt like his body wasn't working right, as he half-pushed, half-flailed his way across the room. C'mon, legs, move! He begged, as Beans went to go fetch something from behind the door. Rango was so scared he couldn't even feel his feet. What was happening? Had Rattlesnake Jake come back to take his revenge?
His tail lashed and knocked the kitchen table halfway across the room. But Rango hadn't noticed that detail yet. Instead, he pressed himself as far as he could into the corner, looking around for the hidden threat. His gun, his gun, where did he leave his gun?
Click.
Rango whirled around. Beans was holding a shotgun, and standing by the door. However, he wasn't reassured as she pointed the loaded gun straight at his head. "Now don't move."
"Beans!" Rango cried. "What're you doing? It's me!"
The lizard's eyes narrowed. "I don't know who you are. But you better get the hell out of my house! What did you do with Rango?"
"What are you taking about? Beans, I'm right here! It's me! I'm Rango!"
"I don't believe you."
Beans took a step forward, and Rango felt his body curl in on itself, in a way he had never felt it done before, and let out what was most definitely not a manly scream. His whole body suddenly started shaking. Beans flinched back as a rattling sound filled the room. Rango gasped and looked wildly around the room. It sounded like the rattlesnake was right here, with them in this very room.
With a start, Rango suddenly realized that Bean's modest living room suddenly seemed even more crowded than usual. And his head felt way up high. And strangely enough, it wasn't his whole body shaking from fear- it was his tail. Rango caught sight of the dreaded rattle out of the corner of his eye. He was right! The snake was right next to him!
Rango tried to reach for his gun, only to realize he could no longer reach. He spun around wildly, and saw long, green coils of diamond-patterned skin. Oh, Sweet Spirit of the West. He couldn't feel his toes, he couldn't feel his feet-
The shaking was coming from his tail. Rango twisted around, and felt as well as saw the snake rattles twist out of sight. This time there was no denying what was happening. He was living in nightmare come true. With a great amount of effort, Rango willed for the shaking to stop. He felt his tail go still, and the rattling sound died down as well. Rango looked down at his body, dreading what he would find.
His clothes were gone. His whole body had been turned into one long twisting, sinuous muscle. A darker, green-brown pattern checkered the original green color of his skin. The markings of a diamondback rattlesnake. Rango knew what he would find, but as he looked further down his torso, his breathing hitched.
He couldn't feel his arms or his legs anymore because he didn't have them. They were gone. Maybe gone forever. And so was his colorful skin and everything else that made him Rango. He was no harmless chameleon anymore. But with this body he didn't even know how to walk. All the pieces were slowly coming together. There had never been another rattlesnake in the house. The tail he had seen waking up was his tail. The rattle had been his rattle. And the snake that Beans was currently pointing a gun at in the living room- that was him.
